Eastern Visayas cholera cases rise
TACLOBAN CITY — The Department of Health in Eastern Visayas reported on Tuesday that cholera cases in the region continue to rise as it already surpassed the number of logged cases of the disease last year. Data from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit disclosed that contaminated water sources of many households sent thousands of residents to hospitals due to suspected cholera. It also revealed that a total of 3,563 cases of cholera have been reported in the region from January to 9 September — five percent higher compared to 3,398 cases recorded over the same period of 2022. Of the total number of cases, 2,882 were sent to hospitals for treatment, 31 were confirmed cholera cases after undergoing laboratory testing, 40 were considered probable at 3,515 were suspected cholera cases. “Water contamination remains the primary reason for the cholera cases,” said DoH-Eastern Visayas RESU manager Boyd Roderick Cerro. “Many of our water sources do not undergo treatment thus they are prone to contamination.” However, despite the higher number of cases, DoH-8 data show less casualties this year with only nine deaths compared to 23 deaths last year. Among the provinces in the region, Eastern Samar recorded the highest number of cases with 1,390; Samar with 1,227; Leyte with 470; Northern Samar with 236; Southern Leyte with 229 and Biliran with 11 cases. The agency is urging the public to boil water for at least three minutes or do water chlorination; keep food away from insects and rats; wash and cook food properly; dispose human waste properly; wash hands with soap and water after using toilet and before eating; keep surroundings clean to prevent flies, other insects and rodents from breeding. NegOcc towns ban pig, pork products entry
BACOLOD CITY — Several local government units in Negros Occidental have prohibited the entry of pigs and pork products from other localities in the province amid confirmed cases of African swine fever in at least three areas, including this provincial capital. As of Friday, those that have enforced a ban are the cities of Himamaylan and San Carlos as well as the municipalities of La Castellana, Isabela and Moises Padilla. “There is a need to protect and preserve the swine-raising industry in the City of Himamaylan against the fatal effects of ASF and hog cholera, especially the backyard farmers,” Mayor Rogelio Raymund Tongson Jr. said in a directive issued on Thursday night. In La Castellana, Mayor Rhummyla Nicor-Mangilimutan ordered a pork ban through an executive order issued on Friday. “There is a need for all live pigs, boar semen, pork and pork-processed products from any other cities and municipalities in Negros Occidental to be banned from entering the municipality since there were already detected positive cases of ASF in the neighboring towns,” Mangilimutan said. Meantime, Isabela Mayor Irene Montilla, in a memorandum dated 7 June, also prohibited the entry of live pigs, pork and pork-related products “due to the increasing number of ASF cases in the province of Negros Occidental.” To recall, San Carlos City Mayor Renato Gustilo first issued an executive order on 31 May banning the entry of live pigs, pork products and other pork-related food items from places affected by ASF and hog cholera. Moises Padilla town also enforced a total ban on the entry of live hogs and pork meat products from other municipalities and cities after cases have been detected in Bacolod City on the last week of May. Earlier this week, Victorias City reported nine ASF-confirmed cases while one case has also been detected in Pulupandan town. In this city, four cases of ASF have already been detected in two villages. Latest report of the Provincial Veterinary Office showed that 16 LGUs in Negros Occidental have reported more than 11,000 swine deaths, mainly due to hog cholera, affecting 2,088 raisers in 125 barangays. One billion threatened by cholera: UN
A billion people in 43 countries are at risk of cholera, the United Nations warned Friday, and though the outbreaks could be stopped, the United Nations said resources were desperately lacking. The UN health agency said the outlook was bleak, as it seeks $640 million to fight the infectious disease, but said the longer it takes to ramp up the battle, the worse the situation will get. The World Health Organization said vaccination campaigns had been severely hampered. "WHO estimates that a billion people across 43 countries are at risk of cholera," said Henry Gray, the agency's incident manager for the global cholera response. So far this year, 24 countries have reported cholera outbreaks, compared to 15 by mid-May last year. Countries that are not usually affected by cholera are being struck, and case fatality rates are far exceeding the typical one in 100. Gray blamed the rise in cases on poverty, conflict and climate change, and the population displacement they trigger. "With the increase in the number of countries affected by cholera, the resources that were available for prevention and response are more thinly spread," he said. Oral cholera vaccine is a case in point: over 18 million doses have been requested this year but only eight million have been made available and so prevention campaigns have been stopped. Rather than the full two doses, only one is being issued to recipients "to try to spin it out", said Gray. "The outlook is bleak." WHO wants $160 million for more than 40 countries over the next 12 months. It is working in coordination with the UN children's agency UNICEF, which wants $480 million. Jerome Pfaffmann Zambruni, UNICEF's public health emergency unit chief, noted that back in November, the agency had asked for $150 million for cholera response -- a figure now eclipsed as the situation has worsened. "It's a wake-up call," he told a briefing in Geneva. "There is a pandemic killing the poor right in front of us and we know exactly how to stop it but we need more support and less inertia from the global community because if we don't act now, it's going to get worse," he said. Cholera is contracted from a bacterium that is generally transmitted through contaminated food or water. It causes diarrhea and vomiting, and can be especially dangerous for young children. 11-M Pinoys lack clean water access
Around 11 million Filipinos are lacking access to clean water based on the estimation of the National Water Resources Board, according to Senator Pia Cayetano on Monday. The lawmaker — who presided the public inquiry on water sustainability — stressed that poor families are left to rely on water sources such as deep wells, springs, rivers, lakes and rainwater which are not necessarily potable and in many cases, not reliable. Cayetano, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, Innovation and Future, lamented that the lack of access to potable water had forced families to defecate in the open areas — increasing the tendency of water contamination which mainly causes the spread of diseases. Meantime, Senator Raffy Tulfo suggested that it is high time for the country to maximize modern technologies to ensure that Filipinos will intake safe drinking water within their homes. “We have to reduce our reliance on groundwater, deep wells... we have to explore other options for the people. We have to make use of modern technologies that are readily available like solar-powered systems… we can also explore the use of rainwater treatment facilities,” Tulfo said. The Philippine Statistics Authority previously reported that some 53,066 Filipinos died between 2010 and 2019 due to water-borne diseases, such as typhoid and para-typhoid fever, diarrhea and cholera.
