DILG’s BIDA Program rolled out in Zamboanga del Sur
Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos led the rollout of the "Buhay Ingatan, Droga’y Ayawan" (BIDA) Program in Zamboanga del Sur on Thursday morning. The BIDA Program launch was one of the highlights of the 71st Araw ng Zamboanga del Sur celebration at the Mega Gymnasium Provincial Government Complex, Dao, Pagadian City, which Abalos attended as a guest of honor and speaker. In his message before an estimated crowd of 1,500 Zambosurians, the DILG chief highlighted the critical role of local government units (LGUs) and other sectors of society in addressing the drug menace through education, prevention, and rehabilitation to complement the relentless anti-drug operations of law enforcement agencies. “Ang importante habang nanghuhuli ang mga pulis, tayong mga nasa LGU—mga barangay captain, konsehal, mayor, gobernador, bokal—community groups, religious leaders, parents, whole-of-nation approach dapat. Bumaba tayo, tulungan natin ang pulis. It’s not only about supply reduction. But most importantly, it's about demand reduction,” Abalos said. Furthermore, the DILG secretary congratulated the province of Zamboanga del Sur on its 71st Charter Day celebration. He also commended the leadership of Governor Victor J. Yu, who focused his governance through HEARTS or Health, Education and Environment, Agriculture, Roads and Bridges, Tourism, and Security. Abalos ended his message by inspiring local officials to continue heed the call of President Marcos for unity. “Iisang bangka tayo. We are given this opportunity, let's make the most out of it. It's time to make a difference for our province, for our city, and most specially for our country. Wala nang sana ganito, sa ganyan sa Pilipinas, wala na. Panahon natin 'to gawin na natin ang tama at huwag tayong matakot. Magtulungan tayo," he said. Named as one of the best government initiatives in Asia by international award-giving body GovMedia Awards, the BIDA Program has already been rolled out to over 700 LGUs nationwide since it was officially launched in November last year, initiating several activities such as BIDA Fun Runs, Serbisyo Caravans, Zumba sessions, cycling events, workshops, and seminars. Meanwhile, DILG Undersecretary for Local Goverment Marlo Iringan, during the Laging Handa press briefing in Malacañang, said the BIDA Program has been going around the country, in line with the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s continued campaign against illegal drugs with a renewed focus on demand reduction through a whole-of-nation approach. Subalit katulad ng nabanggit ko, this is only one of the strategies to generate support against illegal drugs. DILG and Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan partner on BIDA The DILG's BIDA Program has also gained anti-illegal drug advocates among the youth of Cagayan de Oro with the signing of a memorandum of agreement with Xavier University-Ateneo De Cagayan. Abalos said the important role of schools like Xavier University-Ateneo De Cagayan and the church in the whole-of-nation BIDA campaign dwells on the holistic formation of the values of the youth and helping them lead productive lives away from the temptation of illegal drugs. DILG Region X Regional Director Wilhelm M. Suyko, who signed the MOA on behalf of the DILG, said youth involvement is a significant and strategic approach to further strengthen the advocacy of the program. “The good thing about this partnership is that this will also be an opportunity to involve the youth in this campaign. We believe that our students could make a change and that they are our instruments in communicating effectively with the youth as well,” Suyko said. Holding off tradition
San Juan in Metro Manila woke up last Saturday to a gloomy scene on its streets, surprised that the revelry that marked previous years was nowhere to be found. Gone was the splashing of water among its residents that has become a tradition to look forward to and has come to be known as the “Watta Watta Festival.” The feast holds immense significance and is celebrated with great enthusiasm. St. John the Baptist is the patron saint of the city, and the local community takes pride in honoring him on this day. The feast serves as an occasion for the community to come together, strengthening social bonds and fostering a sense of unity and belonging. Last Saturday, however, was different as the city lost its Vice Mayor, Warren Villa to natural causes a week before it was to celebrate the festival. In deference, San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora, a close friend of Villa, issued an executive order declaring June 19 to 25 as a week-long period of mourning. During this period, all city events and celebrations, including the yearly “Watta Watta Festival,” were suspended as a sign of respect for Villa. The event, which staged a return only last year, following a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, commemorates the birth of John the Baptist, a central figure in Christian tradition. St. John the Baptist is revered as a prophet and a messenger, known for baptizing Jesus in the River Jordan. His role in heralding the coming of Christ has made him a revered figure in the Catholic Church and many other Christian denominations. One of the most distinctive aspects of the Feast of St. John the Baptist in San Juan is the water splashing tradition or what residents call the “Basaan Festival.” This tradition originated from the belief that water has purifying and healing properties, symbolizing the cleansing of sins and the renewal of faith. On this day, people gather in the streets, armed with buckets, hoses and water guns, ready to douse each other with water in a lighthearted and joyous manner. The tradition is not only a playful activity but also carries deep symbolism. It represents the washing away of impurities and the start of a new spiritual journey. It is believed that by participating in this tradition, individuals are cleansed of their sins and protected from evil. The ritualistic nature of the water splashing enhances the religious and cultural significance of the celebration. The water splashing festival fosters a sense of camaraderie and unity within the community. People from all walks of life, irrespective of age or social status, join in the festivities. The laughter, excitement and friendly water fights create an atmosphere of joy and celebration. The event often extends beyond the streets, with music, dances, parades and street food further enhancing the festive spirit. The post Holding off tradition appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Kung anong proyekto ang makakatulong sa inyong syudad, masaya rin ako na maging parte sa pag-unlad ng inyong siyudad,” he said. Expressing his joy at being a part of Baybay City’s journey towards advancement, Go also praised the ongoing projects in the city for their positive impact on the citizens. He then emphasized that it is not the people who should express gratitude to him, but rather, he who should be grateful for the opportunity to serve the people. Through the resolution, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan recognized his steadfast commitment to public service, noting that real progress and recovery have always been the outcomes of his dedicated endeavors. The resolution also highlights Go's exceptional efforts in assisting Leyte. Notably, his instrumental role in establishing a medical laboratory to handle COVID-19 cases and the establishment of Malasakit Centers at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center and the Ormoc District Hospital were emphasized. These centers serve as a one-stop shop for core agencies providing medical and financial assistance to indigent and financially incapacitated patients. Meanwhile, Go remains resolute in his commitment to improving the accessibility of healthcare services and expanding the construction of more public health facilities throughout the country. During his visit to Baybay City, he visited the ongoing construction of the highly anticipated Super Health Center in the city, which is 90% complete. Go also took the opportunity to inspect the Baybay City boardwalk, a project in which he played an instrumental role as Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance. Go has also been instrumental in supporting other projects in the province. To further improve the health services in the province, Go also sponsored and successfully pushed for the passage of Republic Act No. 11567, increasing the bed capacity of EVRMC. Furthermore, he was instrumental in the enactment of RA 11566, converting the Schistosomiasis Control and Research Hospital into the GBTRGHSC. Go likewise supported the construction of multipurpose buildings in Alangalang, Babatngon, Carigara, Dagami, Isabel, Jaro, La Paz, Leyte, and Tolosa; construction of the Merida Community Hospital; construction of flood control structures in Alangalang, Javier, Tanauan, and Tolosa; and acquisition of dump trucks for the local governments of Isabel and Villaba, among others. After his visit to Baybay City, Go proceeded to Ormoc City. There, he extended assistance to various sectoral groups, including those affected by a fire incident. Additionally, he conducted a monitoring visit to the Malasakit Center at the Ormoc District Hospital, ensuring its effective operation. Furthermore, in collaboration with Leyte 4th District Representative Richard Gomes and Ormoc City Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomes, Go conducted an inspection of various funded sports facilities in the city. One of the notable projects Go inspected was a Pentathlon facility, which included a fencing hall. During his visit, Go participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the official opening of the fencing hall. BSP serves Palawan through new branch
PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas inaugurated a branch in this city on Thursday to provide banking services and drive more economic activities while boosting financial inclusivity. The BSP main building office is in a 5,000-square meter lot at the corner of North National Road and Sampaloc Road in Barangay San Jose. It houses the financial and administrative offices, cash operation units and security management. BSP Governor Felipe Medalla said the branch, designed to reflect the modern architecture of their latest generation buildings, aims to enhance accessibility primarily in obtaining clean banknotes and coins. “It would become easier for banks to deal with the BSP. Those who needed BSP’s service do not need to charter flights to Manila,” he said. Major event Medalla and other BSP officials were joined in the new branch opening by Palawan governor Victorino Dennis Socrates, Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucilo Bayron, and Vice Mayor Maria Nancy Socrates. During his brief address, Socrates expressed the significance of the opening, noting that its occurrence coincides with the month-long celebration of Palawan’s 121st anniversary of its civil government establishment. He highlighted that the province would also be saying “goodbye, dirty money.” Bayron also highlighted that the funds to be distributed from the branch would effectively address the recurring cash shortage experienced every December. This is of great importance to the city, which serves as a pivotal hub for trade and financial services. “December is withdrawal time, a charter plane of the Bangko Sentral has to fly here to send money. This time, that will not happen anymore because of this branch,” Bayron said. 33 banks get quick service He said the branch will cater to the requirements of approximately 33 banks within the city and an additional 25 banks located in various towns throughout the province. With the establishment of BSP Puerto Princesa, the central bank’s presence now extends to a total of five regional offices covering the Greater Manila Area, North Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao regions. Additionally, it encompasses 21 branches situated in various provinces and cities including La Union, Batac, Cabanatuan, Dagupan, San Fernando Pampanga, Tuguegarao, Legazpi, Lucena, Naga, Puerto Princesa, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Roxas, Tacloban, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cotabato, General Santos, Ozamiz and Zamboanga. This expansion further solidifies the comprehensive reach of the central bank across the country. BSP regional offices are responsible for overseeing the operations of branches within their respective jurisdictions. They also conduct regional economic surveillance, facilitate financial literacy programs, and advocate for financial education. Additionally, these offices are involved in the administration of cash and gold-buying operations. On the other hand, BSP branches primarily handle cash operations, which include services such as withdrawals, deposits, currency exchanges, and retirements within their designated regions or provinces. In select areas, they also engage in gold-buying operations. During the inauguration ceremony, those present included Monetary Board members Peter Favila, Antonio Abacan Jr., V. Bruce Tolentino, and Anita Linda Aquino. In addition, BSP Deputy Governors Mamerto Tangonan, Eduardo Bobier, and Bernadette Romulo-Puyat were present, along with BSP Senior Assistant Governor and General Counsel Elmore Capule, SAG Edna Villa, and Sector-in-Charge Thomas Benjamin Marcelo. Furthermore, Puerto Princesa City Vice Mayor Maria Nancy M. Socrates graced the occasion. The event also saw the participation of BSP officers from the Manila Head Office and South Luzon branches, as well as representatives from the Palawan Bankers Association, and local bank managers. Bong Go lauds PWD volley tournament during visit to Silay, Negros Occidental
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, Chair of the Senate Committee on Sports, with Mayor Joedith Gallego and Vice Mayor Thomas Maynard Ledesma, attended the sitting volleyball match involving persons with disabilities at Natalio Velez Sports and Cultural Center in Silay City, Negros Occidental on Wednesday, 7 June, as part of the city’s 66th Charter Anniversary Celebration. The senator has been a staunch advocate for the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities, consistently pushing for inclusive policies and promoting equal opportunities. In his short remarks, Go then expressed his admiration for the skills of PWD athletes and commended the event organizers for their efforts in promoting inclusivity. Recognizing the challenges faced by para athletes in their pursuit of sporting excellence, Go has been pushing for Senate Bill No. 2116 which seeks to amend Section 8 of Republic Act No. 10699 or the “National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.” If approved, the bill will enhance the incentives for para athletes, bringing them at par with other national athletes competing in international competitions. The proposed measure intends to provide equal opportunities and recognition to all athletes, thereby promoting inclusivity and diversity in sports. These financial incentives are intended to recognize the effort, commitment, and perseverance of para athletes, while also providing support for their ongoing athletic pursuits. “Para athletes overcome tremendous challenges and display remarkable determination and skill to compete at the highest level of international sports competitions. However, their exceptional accomplishments often go unrecognized or are overshadowed,” Go remarked previously. “I have filed a bill to increase the incentives of medalists in international para competitions to be at par with other international competitions of the same caliber,” he said.
