PBA Finals: No apology from Arwind after monkey gesture aimed at Jones

For the most part, Game 5 of the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals between TNT and San Miguel Beer went normal. No shenanigans or anything like that. No more physical mind games. And then there’s Arwind. Santos was caught on camera doing a monkey gesture late in the first half after TNT’s Best Import Terrence Jones was called for a foul, resulting in a change in possession. Without a shadow of a doubt, that counts as racism especially on the part of Jones, who is African-American. Unfortunately and quite disappointingly, Arwind doesn’t see it that way. In fact, he’s unapologetic about it. “Sorry ako? Hindi. Depende yun sa kanya. Kung mapipikon siya, totoong monkey siya. Kung di ka mapipikon, di ka monkey. Kami nanga-asar lang. Kami nga magka-kapatid naga-asaran din kami. Di ko naman siya kaano-ano,” Santos said. “Gusto lang namin manalo. Kung mapikon siya, hindi ko na kasalanan yun,” Arwind added. Jones didn’t see the gesture and so it was a non-issue. However, fans have started to call out Arwind on social media, even San Miguel supporters. It’s 2019, those things have no place in this world, especially a Finals that has been beautifully-played by both teams. Looks like Arwind didn’t get the memo. “Dati naman di ba, pwede mo isigaw yan. Kami nung nasa Air 21 pa ako, time nila Dorian [Pena] tinatawag din namin na ganun, gorilla,” he said. “Pero wala yun pang-asar lang yun, sinusubukan mo lang mang-asar. Kasi magaling eh,” Santos added. After the gesture, Arwind did admit that he got a warning from PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial and from his own coaches, after all, he did the gesture while on the bench. “Sinabi ko nga di ba, mind games yun, Pero sinabihan naman ako kanina, kaya di ko na ginawa yun. Dati ginagawa ko yan, wala naman warning so okay lang. Kanina na-warning ako ni Commissioner tsaka ng mga coaches ko, kaya di ko na ginawa,” Santos said. “Basketball, mind games di ba? Malay mo makita niya at mapikon siya pag tinatawag siya na ganun. Eh pabor samin. Na-warning naman kami, sinabihan kami. Nakaka-intindi naman kami,” he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Go urges BFP to push modernization efforts

Senator Christopher ‘’Bong’’ Go on Friday urged the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to continue its efforts to modernize and enhance its ranks by acquiring more fire trucks and equipment especially for the  remote areas in the country. Sen. Bong Go (Senate of the Philippines / MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) Go issued the statement after attending yesterday the ceremonial turnover at the Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo in Quezon City of the recently procured equipment of the BFP, including 84 units of 1,000 gallons capacity fire trucks, five units of aerial ladder, and three units of rescue trucks to be distributed by BFP to various local government units around the country.  “All over the country po ito ipapamahagi. Natutuwa po ako dahil ang gusto naman po natin ay mabigyan ng sapat na kagamitan laban sa sunog ang mga iba’t ibang lugar — hopefully sa lahat ng sulok po ng bansa ay handa po tayo,” Go said. (These will be distributed all over the country. I am happy because we want to give the appropriate fire-fighting equipment to different parts of the country.)    Go said there are many municipalities that have no financial capabilities to buy such an equipment. “Hopefully, patuloy pa ang pag-acquire nila ng mga panibagong equipment. Kinausap ko rin po si Dir. Embang na ikonsidera rin nila ‘yung mga maliliit na fire trucks na puwedeng pumasok sa mga liblib o masisikip na lugar kasi doon po madalas nagkakasunog,” Go said, referring to BFP Chief Jose Embang, Jr. (Hopefully, their acquisition of fire-fighting equipment will continue. I told Director Embang that BFP should consider buying small fire trucks that can enter narrow roads and congested areas where fires usually originate from.) Last February 11, 2020, Go joined President Duterte in witnessing the turnover of 74 fire trucks. The Senator also continues to provide aid to fire victims in different parts of the country.  “Mahirap po mawalan ng bahay at kagamitan dahil sa sunog at iba pang sakuna. Kaya po patuloy akong nagbibigay ng tulong sa mga biktima at nag-iiwan ng ngiti sa oras ng kanilang pagdadalamhati,” Go said. (It is hard to lose a house and personal belongings due to fires. That is why I continue to extend help to fire victims and give them a reason to smile during a time of grief.) “Bilang isang Senador at public servant, patuloy po akong magseserbisyo, lalo na sa mga mahihirap at nangangailangan na apektado ng krisis tulad ng sunog. Kasabay nito ay pagsisikapan ko bilang mambabatas na mas palakasin pa ang ating fire prevention and protection measures,” he added. (As a senator and a public servant, I continue to be of service, particularly to victims of crises like fires. As a lawmaker, I continue to help to strengthen our fire prevention and protection measures.)     As vice-chairman of the Senate Committee on Peace and Order and as a main advocate of fire protection modernization initiatives, one of Go’s priority bills is Senate Bill 204 which is now consolidated under Committee Report No. 111, otherwise known as BFP Modernization Act of 2020.  The measure is currently undergoing the period of interpellation in the Senate. The bill aims to ensure the hiring of more personnel, acquisition of modern fire equipment, and the conduct of training for firefighters of the BFP.  The bill will also empower local communities in preventing fire incidents by mandating the BFP to conduct monthly fire prevention campaigns and information drives in all local government units (LGUs), especially in vulnerable areas.  Go said President Duterte fully supports the modernization efforts of the BFP. “Ang sabi ng Pangulo, sabihin mo sa kanila huwag na nila ako unahin, ‘yung kagamitan ng mga sundalo at kapulisan at bumbero ang unahin natin,” he said. (The President said the equipment of soldiers, policemen, and firemen should come first.) During the event, Go expressed his and Duterte’s full support for the country’s fire personnel, citing the government’s recent effort to increase the salaries and promote the welfare of the military and uniformed personnel.  “Full support po kami sa inyo. Unang-una po, ‘yung pangako niya pagkaupo pa lang niya bilang Pangulo, tinupad niya agad ang pangako niya,” Go said, referring to the increase in salaries provided to uniformed personnel, including firefighters. (We give our full support to you. The President fulfills his promises when he took over the presidency in 2016.) Go also said that he supports the President’s position of arming BFP personnel so they can help in the fight against criminality.  “We are currently studying this added measure of arming firefighters. Nabanggit na rin ito ng Pangulo. Makakatulong din sila sa paglaban ng kriminalidad at para rin maproteksyunan ang kanilang mga sarili. Pati sa kampanya laban sa droga, makakatulong din sila,” Go said. (This was mentioned by the President. They can help fight criminality and also protect themselves. They can also help in containing the spread of dangerous drugs.)    In addition to fire trucks and other modern equipment, Go also said that he is coordinating with BFP officials, government finance managers, and concerned agencies on how to also provide additional ambulance units to the BFP.  He said that providing ambulances will make the BFP more responsive in fulfilling its mandate and will be useful, especially in times of national emergencies given that their personnel are well-trained frontliners.  “Kapag mayroon nang vaccine kontra COVID-19, pwede pong tumulong ang BFP para mabakunahan ang mga tao. Nagtutulungan po lahat ng ating uniformed personnel, mula military, pulis, bumbero, at iba pa para maprotektahan ang kapakanan ng ating mga kababayan,” Go explained. (Our firemen can also help in the vaccination of our countrymen to fight the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Our uniformed personnel, from the military, policemen, firemen and others can help in protecting the interests of Filipinos.)  Go thanked officials for their efforts to modernize the BFP and for their continuing service, especially during the pandemic, specifically Department of the Interior and Local Government officials led by Secretary Eduardo Año and BFP officials led by Embang, Jr.  Go also acknowledged local officials and district representatives who were present, including Congressman Onyx Crisologo of the 1st District of Quezon City, Congresswoman Angel Amante-Matba of the 2nd District of Agusan del Norte, Mayor Marcy Teodoro of Marikina City, and Mayor Judy Amante of Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte and thanked them for their support to the national government in the bayanihan efforts to overcome the pandemic.  “Dahil mahirap ang panahon ngayon, we have to adjust to the new normal pero konting tiis lang po. Alam kong hirap po kayo. Kami ni Pangulong Duterte, hindi kami nawawalan ng pag-asa, magtulungan lang po tayo. Sino pa ba ang magtutulungan kundi tayong kapwa Pilipino,” he said, (Because times are hard, we have to adjust to the new normal. Please bear with us. I know you are suffering. I and President Go have not lost hope. We should help one another.).....»»

Process ongoing as PBA reviews Abueva s suspension

The ball is officially on the PBA's court when it comes to the fate of Calvin Abueva. Just recently, Abueva revealed that he has completed his PBA-mandated requirements as he hopes to end his suspension and return to the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters. As of now however, the process to reinstate Calvin is still ongoing. "Nag-usap na kami ni Calvin last Thursday. Magka-usap kami, kamustahan, maganda ang kwentuhan at lahat," PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said during the most recent PSA forum. "Sinabi ko sa kanya, may proseso pang gagawin. Pero ang maganda, nagka-usap na kami. Naintindihan niya ako, naiintindihan ko siya," Marcial added. Abueva recently told veteran sportscaster Sev Sarmenta on "Sports Page" that he already met his requirements. [Related: Abueva waits for PBA decision on his suspension] "Actually, right now tapos na po lahat. Result na lang ang hinihintay," Calvin said. "Hanggang ngayon yun na lang hinihintay ko, kung anong result na saabihin ni Commissioner dun sa mga ginawa ko," he added. The process is ongoing but Marcial says he's not at liberty to divulge more information regarding Abueva's case. Calvin has been suspended from the PBA since June of 2019. "Hindi ko pwede isiwalat sa inyo kung paano, para sa proteksyon at ikabubuti ng lahat," Commissioner Willie said. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Meralco s Bong Quinto shed rookie tag in last PBA Finals

One of the bigger surprises of the 2018 PBA Draft was Letran star Bong Quinto falling all the way down to the second round. With the second pick of round 2 and 14th overall, Quinto was picked by the Meralco Bolts. Over the course of the 2019 season, Quinto saw limited minutes in the first two conferences before breaking out in the Governors' Cup, helping push the Bolts back to the PBA Finals. In the championship round, Quinto felt that he finally arrived. "Lalo na nung semifinals, kasi isa ako sa mga nakatulong sa team lalo na nung Game 5. Pagdating ng Finals, sinabi ko na yung pagiging rookie itatabi ko na yun," Quinto said on 2OT. "Kasi tatlong conference na rin. Yung kaba nandoon, pero ready na ako makipag-compete kahit kanino, kung kanino man ako ma-assign," he added. Quinto and the Bolts ended up losing the 2019 Governors' Cup Finals to Ginebra, pushing the team's record to 0-3 in the PBA Finals. Still, Meralco is hopeful for a better campaign in the Philippine Cup once the league returns from COVID-19. The All-Filipino has been a weakness for the Bolts in the last couple of years, but a retooled local core has some promise. "Gutom na kami eh. Gutom na sa laro, gutom na manalo kami," Quinto said. "Yung preparation namin nandoon na, pero dumating yung pandemic back to zero. Pero workout sa bahay para pagbalik ng Philippine Cup, maka-perform kami ng maayos," he added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Pogoy backs Finals rival McCullough for Gilas Pilipinas

Chris McCullough is a trendy pick to be the next naturalized player for Gilas Pilipinas. He's young, tall and lanky, a gifted scorer, and can help out on defense, especially on the weak side of the ball. Oh and he's a winner too, having led the San Miguel Beermen to the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup title. A lot of people back C-Mac to Gilas, including RR Pogoy, the national team mainstay and PBA Finals rival to McCullough. "Malaki rin yung matutulong niya kasi parang fit siya sa laro ng mga Pinoy," Pogoy said on 2OT with PBA broadcasters Magoo Marjon and Carlo Pamintuan. "Malaki, 6'10" ata siya na may laro sa labas at loob. Tapos, parang pwede siya sa depensa na shot blocker, kasi yan kailangan sa Gilas eh, yung shot blocker tsaka rebounder na offensive player," he added. Despite being a trendy pick, there's still some concerns about C-Mac on Gilas. For one, he wasn't a known one-on-one defender, and his lanky frame could be all the more questionable against the bigger centers in the Asian region. But for Pogoy, McCullough pairing up with San Miguel teammate June Mar Fajardo can solve those problems, and the positives of C-Mac's versatility can outweigh the negatives of his supposed defensive struggles. "Mayroon naman tayong June Mar so pwede naman siguro," Pogoy said. "Yung all-around talaga ang kailangan kapag mag-naturalize tayo so feel ko, pwedeng-pwede siya [McCullough] pang-Gilas," he added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Olympics-bound boxers Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno under self-quarantine after Qualifying Tournament

The celebration will have to wait for 2020 Tokyo Olympics-bound pugs Eumir Marcial and Irish Magno as they have put themselves under self-quarantine after arriving in the Philippines, following a successful campaign in the recently-concluded Asia and Oceania Olympic Boxing Qualifiers that was held in Amman, Jordan.  Marcial, the top-seeded Men's Middleweight breezed through his division, taking home the gold medal as well as a ticket to the Summer Games in Tokyo.  Magno, meanwhile, made good on her second chance in the tournament, winning her Women's Flyweight Olympic Box-off to also earn a place on the Philippine Team.  “Naka-self-quarantine po ako dto sa Baguio. Ganun din po ‘yung iba ko pang teammates,” Magno told ABS-CBN News' Dennis Gasgonia. The Iloilo native will have to get clearance to go home and celebrate with her loved ones once her quarantine is up. "Wait ko pa po ang sasabihin ng mga coaches after po ng quarantine kung pwede po muna umuwi. UAAP 82: Finals Terrence is a thing for National U

Terrence Fortea has been in the Finals for all of his six seasons in Nazareth School of National University. Even better, Fortea has been a champion in all but two of his six years as a Bullpup. Without a doubt, the 5-foot-11 guard is a winner. In Fortea's first three seasons in blue and gold, he was a utility player, but in the last three, blossomed into a deadly weapon. In 2018, his 14-point, five-rebound, and three-assist outing almost put a stop to the coronation of SJ Belangel, Dave Ildefonso, and Kai Sotto. In 2019, his 12.5-point average was key to a breakthrough title for head coach Goldwin Monteverde. And in 2020, his 19-point norm made sure National U completed a clean sweep of the season. For that, the now-18-year-old was recognized as Finals MVP. Of course, Fortea acknowledged that he really raises his game on the biggest stage and under the brightest lights, but at the same time, said that he always sees to it to go all-out. "Kailangan pong ganun kahit hindi Finals. Every day, iniisip ko sa sarili kong nasan na ba ako ngayon at ano bang kailangan ko pang i-improve," he shared. He then continued, "Parang hindi ako nakukumpyansa na okay na ako rito." Still, six straight seasons in the championship round have given the Bullpups' stalwart enviable experience in the biggest games. Clearly, that has only translated into big-time performances. "Siyempre po, sobrang laking tulong nung Finals experience na yun kasi kaya kong impluwensyahan yung mga kasama ko. Pwede akong mag-lead talaga," he said. And the scarier thought for the rest of the league? Fortea has one more year of eligibility and has a golden opportunity for seven Finals in a row. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

'Bata' Reyes still has Olympic dreams

Efren "Bata" Reyes has won almost every award possible in his chosen sport of billiards, that's why he's the greatest and a living legend. On Friday, the Philippine Sportswriters Association recognized "Bata" for his timeless contributions to sports, handing "The Magician" with a Lifetime Achievement Award. But for all his great success, there's one thing "Bata" wishes he could have done. "Kung meron Olympics na kasama ang bilyar, mas maganda sana," Reyes said Friday as he received his latest trophy at the Manila Hotel. "Baka sakali, pwede tayo manalo jan. Kaso wala," he added. Billiards is not an official Olympic sport, and so the Summer Games was the stage Reyes never got to reach. A case is being made for billiards to be included in the 2024 Olympics in Paris but time is not exactly on the side of the 65-year-old "Bata" to realize his Olympic dream. Nevertheless, Reyes is happy to still be a source of inspiration to his fellow athletes and his latest PSA award is just proof of his magic. "Napaka-laking halaga nito para sakin," Reyes said on his PSA Lifetime Achievement Award. NCAA Season 95: Lady Chiefs take share of lead

Three-time defending champion Arellano University absorbed its first set loss in NCAA Season 95 women’s volleyball competition. After getting a mouthful from head coach Obet Javier during the break, the Lady Chiefs responded with a dominating outing in the fourth frame to carve out a 25-17, 25-18, 25-27, 25-13, win Saturday to move up to a share of the lead at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. Arellano U collected its fourth straight win to remain unscathed and joined College of St. Benilde on top of the standing. Still, Javier wasn’t all too happy with their win. The Lady Chiefs were just two points away from wrapping up the match 23-19, but a costly service error from setter Sarah Verutiao opened a golden opportunity for the Lady Stags to capitalize to steal the frame. “Kumbaga nag-sub ako ng dalawa para advantage sana sa amin para maging tatlo ang spiker ko. Ang problema ‘yung kapitan ko ay nag-error naman,” said Javier. “’Yun ang laging sinasabi ko na ang service na ‘yan kahit na service lang ‘yan ay napakahalaga ng bola na ‘yun. Pwede ka kasi manalo, pwede ka matalo so yung third set dahil nag-error ang kapitan ko, ang setter ko, kami ang natalo.” Javier then put the Lady Chiefs back to their senses during the lull and Arellano U responded with an early breakout to take the win. Regine Arocha once again was instrumental in the Lady Chiefs’ latest conquest, their sixth win overall since last year’s come-from-behind Finals series victory, tallying a personal-best 24 points she claimed off 19 attacks, four aces and a kill block. The reigning back-to-back Finals MVP added 11 digs and nine excellent sets to further boost her stock in the race for the season’s highest individual award. Season 95 MVP Necole Ebuen finished with 10 points, Princess Bello had nine markers while Mikaela Juanich and Carla Donato combined for 16 points for the Lady Chiefs, who won their sixth head-to-head game against SSC-R since Season 92. The Lady Stags dropped their fourth straight game in as many games. Jamille Carreon got 13 points while Reyann Canete posted 12 markers in a lost cause for SSC-R. Meanwhile, the Chiefs took a share of the lead after outlasting the Stags, 25-23, 16-25, 25-27, 25-19, 16-14, in men’s play. Arellano U kept its unbeaten card intact with its fourth win tied with grand slam-seeking University of Perpetual Help. Christian Dela Paz exploded for 29 points while Jesrael Liberato and Demy Lapuz had 16 and 12 markers, respectively, for the Chiefs. The Stags suffered its third loss in four games despite the 25-point effort of Reynald Honra and Julius Lana’s 20 markers. In juniors play, the unbeaten Braves tied six-peat-seeking Perpetual with their fourth win at the expense of the Staglets, 25-19, 25-13, 25-15.       ---     Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

SEA Games: After missing NU’s 6-peat, Jack hopes for gold with Gilas women

MANILA — One of National University’s basketball anchors, Jack Animam missed the Lady Bulldogs’ crowning glory in the UAAP after she was out when her team completed an undefeated 6-peat. Suffering an eye injury during the FIBA Olympic pre-Qualifying tournament in New Zealand, Animam wasn’t around for NU’s 95th and 96th straight victories in the UAAP to extend an unbeaten dynasty. Now fully healthy and back in action for Gilas Pilipinas women, Animam wants to make up by winning a gold medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. She’s certailnly off to a good start after the Philippines beat previous SEA Games tormentor Indonesia Thursday at the MOA Arena, 63-56. “2-3 weeks ago nandito yung collegiate team ko, nag-champion sila without me. Syempre gusto ko rin ma-emulate kung ano yung nagawa nila without me,” Animam said. “But with Gilas women. Gusto ko mag-gold. Gusto ko manalo para sa lahat ng mga taong sumusuporta samin,” she added. Animan has a habit of predicting wins — and she’s right pretty much all the time — but for 5x5 basketball in the SEA Games, she won’t make one. [Related: SEA Games: Animam predicts 3x3 gold for Gilas women] Instead, she says Gilas women will keep their focus as they know winning gold here will not be as easy as just speaking it into existence. Unlike the men’s team, the Philippine national women’s team has never won a gold medal in SEA Games basketball. At least not yet. “Basta ngayon ang masasabi ko lang, one game at a time kami,” Animam said. “Di kami pwede maging complacent, di kami pwede maging relaxed. One game at a time, papakita namin kung bakit yung women’s basketball nandito, and we will stay,” she added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
