Roger Gorayeb: A coach s role is also to be a father
Coaching a collegiate team especially in women's volleyball is never an easy job. For Roger Gorayeb, being a mentor to kids in their teens goes beyond the call of duty inside the court. You play the role of both a coach and a second father. What they will become in the future -- a continuing career in the sport or on a different endeavor -- the knowledge a coach will impart on them will be their guide in their chosen paths. The multi-titled mentor has been coaching since 1984. He has a wealth of experience dealing with different personalities and has touched a lot of lives in his almost four decades in the industry. What he cherishes the most is not the number of titles, accolades or success his players collected under his watch, but what these players or what he likes to call his ‘children’ have become. Siyempre natutuwa ako,” said the 59-year-old coach. Gorayeb played a big role in the careers and lives of his players from San Sebastian College, Ateneo de Manila University and National University. Alyssa Valdez, Grethcel Soltones, Jaja Santiago, Jasmine Nabor, the Ateneo Fab Five of Gretchen Ho, Fille Cainglet- Cayetano, Dzi Gervacio, Jem Ferrer and A Nacachi are just some of the stars that saw their collegiate careers take flight under his tutelage. “Masaya at masarap sa feeling,” Gorayeb told ABS-CBN Sports as he tried to put into words the satisfaction he feels while doing his passion to coach. On court he is a strict mentor, serious, all-business, but beyond that he is a father-figure to his players. “Kapag may laro o ensayo volleyball lang talaga kami. Pero after n’yan yung aming relationship 'di na coach at player,” said the PLDT coach in the Philippine Superliga. Kasi during training di mo naman malalaman yan eh.” Dati pinahirapan kita.’ Pero doon kasi sila natututo. Nagi-struggle sila tapos malalampasan nila,” said Gorayeb. Last year when Gorayeb was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, the players that he guided during their collegiate careers never left his side. Bumibisita sila sa ospital,” he said. Yung during the course of that five years na pag-stay nila namin bilang player at coach malalim ang nagiging ugat ng relationship.” Their presence and prayers along with his family, according to Gorayeb, were his strength during that difficult time. Araw-araw nasa ospital, na-witness nila yung nangyari sa akin,” said Gorayeb, who is still undergoing chemotherapy. He’s thankful for all the efforts his players did to help especially the fund-raising concert they organized last November for him. So naiyak na lang ako noon kasi wala akong boses di ako makapagsalita,” he said. Now with just two chemo sessions left and a few tests to assure that his cancer-free, Gorayeb is looking forward on his return to coaching. He wants to resume his mission. Marami pa akong dapat tulungan,” said Gorayeb. Gorayeb vows that he will continue to be a father – both inside and outside of the court. Bong Go aids fire-hit Cebu communities, stresses fire prevention interventions
On Saturday, May 20, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go had his team mounted a relief activity for Cebuanos whose houses were damaged in a fire incident in Cebu City. In a video call, the senator underscored that he will continue to promote and advocate for better fire prevention measures in the country. A lost life is a lost life forever. Kaya mag-ingat po tayo,” Go expressed. The senator's team mounted the relief activity at Barangay Mambaling gymnasium, where they distributed grocery packs, snacks, vitamins, masks and shirts. They also gave away bicycles, mobile phones, shoes, watches and balls for basketball and volleyball to select beneficiaries. A team from the Department of Social Welfare and Development also extended financial support. In total, 171 affected families were aided from Barangays Duljo Poblacion, Pit-os, Mambaling, Kalunasan, Luz, Sinsin, Kamputhaw and Basak San Nicolas. Go has primarily authored and co-sponsored Republic Act No. 11589, otherwise known as the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Modernization Act. Signed by former president Rodrigo Duterte in 2021, the Act provides for the acquisition of modern fire equipment, expansion of the BFP's manpower, and provision of highly-specialized training to firefighters, among others. It also mandates the bureau to implement monthly fire prevention campaigns and information drives in every local government unit. Go also offered to help those with health issues. As Chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, he encouraged them to seek the services of the Malasakit Centers located at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, Cebu City Medical Center and St. Anthony Mother and Child Hospital, all located in the city. The Malasakit Center was first established in VSMMC in 2018. To date, there are 157 such centers nationwide that have helped over seven million particularly poor and indigent patients, according to the Department of Health. The Malasakit Center is a one-stop shop where patients may conveniently apply for medical assistance from concerned agencies such as the DSWD, DOH, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. In Cebu province, there are also Malasakit Centers at Eversley Childs Sanitarium and General Hospital in Mandaue City, Cebu South Medical Center in Talisay City, Lapu-Lapu District Hospital in Lapu-Lapu City, and Cebu Provincial Hospital in Carcar City. Go then mentioned that DOH has also identified areas to construct Super Health Centers in the province. SHCs were funded to be established in the cities of Bogo, Danao, Lapu-Lapu, and Mandaue; and in the towns of Borbon, Cordova, Moalboal, Samboan and San Francisco in 2022. This year, more Super Health Centers were funded in the cities of Carcar, Cebu, Talisay and Toledo; and in the towns of Carmen, Consolacion, Liloan, Medellin and San Nicolas. An additional Super Health Center will also be established in Danao City. Through the collective efforts of fellow lawmakers, sufficient funds had been allocated for 307 Super Health Centers in 2022 and 322 in 2023. DOH, the lead implementing agency, identifies the strategic areas where they will be constructed. Super Health Centers offer database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray, ultrasound), pharmacy, and ambulatory surgical unit. Other available services are eye, ear, nose, and throat service; oncology centers; physical therapy and rehabilitation center; and telemedicine, where remote diagnosis and treatment of patients will be done. Meanwhile, Go was also instrumental in the passage of Republic Act No. 11717, which increased the bed capacity of VSMMC from 1,200 to 1,500 beds. As Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, Go likewise continues to help improve the delivery of public service in the city as he supported the rehabilitation and expansion of the Barangay Multi-Purpose Building Area at Barangay Duljo Fatima and the acquisition of a mini dumptruck. On the same day, Go also sent another team in Mandaue City and provided similar relief to more fire victims. ### The post Bong Go aids fire-hit Cebu communities, stresses fire prevention interventions appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Ano bang kahulugan nito? Salamat. What Korina Sanchez-Roxas wants to teach young girls about money
Popular broadcaster Korina Sanchez-Roxas is successful, sweet and independent – especially when it comes to money. During a media conference for her show “Rated Korina” held in Quezon City recently, Korina revealed that she never asked money from her husband former Senator Mar Roxas II. “Pero may anak kami so hati kami. Korina said that her being a breadwinner in the family when she was younger taught her how to value money. Ako yung taga-bigay,” she said. When asked if she gives money to her husband, Korina laughed and said: Oo naman. Abonado ako madalas.” Korina said she wanted to teach her daughter Pilar the importance of earning money for herself when she grows up. “I choose that. I can hold myself. I don’t bother him much. Ma-regalo naman siya. Wala na nga akong hinihingi so siyempre may regalo dapat,” said Korina as she smiled. Asked if the gifts she received were expensive, Korina said: “Hindi naman mayasdo. Korina said that they do not go out of town that much these days for their bonding moments because they already have children. Pag seven years na yan, ayon sa batas,” the award-winning broadcaster said. Korina Sanchez-Roxas When asked about plans to have more children in the future, Korina said in jest: “Saka na natin pag usapan ‘yan. Working mom ako.” Korina said that she misses her kids – Pepe and Pilar – when she goes taping for several days. “Masakit yung anak mo na hindi mo nahahawakan from afar. Magki-kiss kami may salamin. Araw-araw ako naka Face Time, 2-3 times a day. Pati tagaluto sa kusina kilala nila,” she said. “Ilongga ang anak ko! Si Jess, si Jiss. Si Pepe, Pipi! Sabi niya ‘ako man, ako man!’ Gusto ko ituro sa anak ko you have to make the most of your time. You don’t just watch TV the whole day,” she said. Produced by BrightLigt Productions, Korina said that she is excited for her journey on TV5. There will be some issues but nothing political. Marami namang gumagawa ng ibang programa nun. Sasawsaw pa ba tayo dun? Four stories every week.” Rated Korina, a news magazine and lifestyle show, will be launched on Saturday, Oct. 24, on TV5, 4-5 p.m. Korina brushed aside competitions with other networks, saying this is not the right time to tear each other down. “If aint broke, why will you fix it? Kami nga iyong ginagaya di ba? The more the merrier. Now is not the time to tear each other down. The signs of the times, it’s teaching us that there’s something wrong in what we’re doing so ayan! Mag re-boot kayo. Siguro concentrate na lang in doing good,” she said. Korina also denied reports that she will be appointed to an executive position on TV5. “No! I’m director level pero never ako nagkaroon ng tauhan. Kasi I would like to be on-cam. Maybe later on,” she said. But Korina said that she’s not closing her doors for any opporunities in the news department. “Later on siguro. Hindi naman mawawala iyan. Pag-isipan natin. Korina also shared some secrets for success in the broadcasting industry. “The glamor part is 10 percent. Ninety percent is hardwork. Hard work talaga ‘yan. In anything you do, you need to work well. Kahit nag-gigisa ka lang ng sibuyas, you have to do it well. Just do it well at hindi ka mawawalan.”.....»»
National U s historic championship was an Altamirano family affair
National University's 60-year title drought came to a close in 2014. And according to head coach Eric Altamirano, it was already predetermined even before the season started. One day, kasama ko si Luigi, kinukwento ko sa kanya na nag-struggle nga ang team," he shared in The Prospects Pod, referring to his second son. He then continued, "Pero sabi ni Luigi, 'Dad magcha-champion tayo ngayon.' As I look back now, I remember that day na sinabi nga ni Luigi yun and nagkatotoo nga." At the end of UAAP 77, Luigi proved prophetic, witnessing his dad guide the Bulldogs to a long-awaited and much-desired title. Of course, the dominant defense, the difference-making presence of Alfred Aroga, and the total team effort of the blue and gold contributed to that. At the same time, very much key was the all-out support of coach Eric's wife, children, and entire household. In the brilliant tactician's six-season stint in Sampaloc, wife Marissa, sons Anton and Luigi, daughter Aby, and several other members of the household were fixtures behind the scenes. While coach Eric was, well, coaching, the other Altamiranos were also right there as much-welcome helping hands - on or off the court. Indeed, in the same way that coach Eric changed the culture of basketball in National U, so did he and his family change the lives of his players. "Siguro, nung first three years ko sa NU, sobrang pasaway ako sa kanya. Talagang hindi ako sumusunod kasi may sarili akong mundo nun na parang sobrang bilib siguro ako sa sarili ko," versatile wing Glenn Khobuntin said. He then continued, "Pero kung pinabayaan lang niya ako nun, hindi ko alam kung anong mangyayari sa life ko. Nadiretso buhay ko nung palagi pa rin niya akong kinakausap after practice." Now, Khobuntin has the Altamiranos as the template for what he wants his own family to become. "When I had my own family na, doon ko na-realize kung bakit niya ginagawa yun. Parang gusto ko ngang magmura kapag naiisip ko e," he said. He then continued, "Grabe. In the end, the team captain of the Bulldogs' UAAP 77 champion team could do nothing but express how much he loved his mentor. "I love you, coach," Khobuntin said. "Thank you." Without a doubt, his teammates only share the same sentiments. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo. .....»»
TODA workers in Pampanga receive support from Bong Go
The Office of Senator Bong Go, in coordination with the Office of Representative Anna York Bondoc and the Department of Social Welfare and Development, extended assistance to Tricycle Operators and Drivers' Association drivers in San Luis, Pampanga on Thursday, 25 May. Held at Dr. Emigdio Bondoc Convention Center, Go’s team gave away masks, snacks, and vitamins to 1,200 tricycle drivers. They also gave away shirts, a bicycle, a mobile phone, shoes, and balls for basketball to select beneficiaries. In his video message, Go, as Chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, encouraged Kapampangans who are in need of medical assistance to reach out to the Malasakit Centers located at Jose B. Lingad Memorial Regional Hospital and Overseas Filipino Workers Hospital and Diagnostic Center, both in San Fernando City; and at Rafael Lazatin Memorial Medical Center in Angeles City. The Malasakit Center is a one-stop shop that streamlines the provision of medical assistance by bringing the relevant government agencies under one roof, namely, the DSWD, the Department of Health, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. Go, who primarily authored and sponsored the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019. As Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, Go also supported the funding for new equipment for hospitals in San Fernando City and the towns of Arayat, Bacolor, Floridablanca, Guagua, Lubao, Mabalacat, Porac, and San Luis; and the construction of multipurpose buildings in Arayat, Floridablanca, Santa Monica, Magalang and Masantol, among others. He was also instrumental in the construction of slope protection along Sapangbato River in Barangay Margot in Angeles City. Last 26 January, Go was honored by the provincial government of Pampanga for advancing the province's well-being and interests through its Resolution No. 7643-A. On that same day, former president Rodrigo Duterte was declared the province's "adopted son" by virtue of Resolution No. 7643, in recognition of his significant contributions to Pampanga's growth and prosperity during his presidency from 2016 to 2022. The senator’s team likewise assisted disadvantaged residents in Angeles City last 19 May. The post TODA workers in Pampanga receive support from Bong Go appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Go comforts fire victims in Pritil
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go visited and extended assistance to the victims of a recent fire in Tondo on Wednesday, 10 May. A fire broke out in the neighborhood on 18 April gutting parts of Pritil Public Market and leaving 672 vendors adversely affected. In response, Go held a relief operation at Barangay 91 covered court and provided grocery packs, masks, vitamins, and snacks to the affected vendors. The senator also gave away bicycles, mobile phones, shoes, bags, watches, and balls for basketball and volleyball to select recipients. That day, the Department of Social Welfare and Development gave financial assistance to all qualified vendors. ‘Yun lang po ang aking pakiusap sa inyong lahat,” said Go in his speech. Upon the request of Go, the DSWD also conducted further validation and assessment for possible sustainable livelihood grants that can be extended to the fire victims. Mas masarap po ang pakiramdam kapag pinaghirapan at pinagpawisan ninyo ang inyong pagnenegosyo,” he cited during the ambush interview after the event. “Palaguin n’yo ang inyong negosyo. Importante ‘wag pong malugi… kapag kumita ay dalahin n’yo sa inyong pamilya,” he added. Go also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the firefighters who worked tirelessly to put out the blaze. For his part as a senator, Go primarily authored and co-sponsored Republic Act No. 11589, otherwise known as the BFP Modernization Act, which mandates a ten-year modernization program for the bureau that includes the acquisition of new fire equipment, hiring of additional personnel, and provision of specialized training for firefighters. It also directs the BFP to conduct monthly fire prevention campaigns and information drives in every local government unit, in partnership with the Department of the Interior and Local Government. A lost life is a lost life forever. The senator was accompanied by Congressman "Ernix" Dionisio, Jr. and other local officials who continue to serve the community. He likewise urged those with health concerns to seek the services of the Malasakit Centers located in the city, including Tondo Medical Hospital, Philippine General Hospital, Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital, Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Hospital, and San Lazaro Hospital. A brainchild of Go, the Malasakit Centers program provides one-stop shops designed to help particularly poor and indigent patients with their medical expenses by bringing partnered agencies under one roof, such as the DSWD, Department of Health, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. The senator likewise supported DOH in its initiative to build more Super Health Centers nationwide, including those in Barrio Magsaysay in Tondo, Valeriano Furgoso in Santa Cruz which were funded in 2022, as well as in Esperanza in Sta. Mesa, Maria Clara in Sampaloc, Atang dela Rama, and Palomar, both also in Tondo, which were funded in 2023. Super Health Centers offer health services including database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray, ultrasound), pharmacy and ambulatory surgical unit. Other available services are eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) service, oncology centers, physical therapy and rehabilitation center and telemedicine where remote diagnosis and treatment of patients will be done. In line with his efforts as Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, Go also supported the construction of multipurpose buildings and road improvements in several barangays, the structural improvement of public buildings, and the construction of evacuation centers. He also supported the acquisition of medical and educational supplies, surveillance system, rescue patrol service, ambulances, and multipurpose vehicle; and the purchase and installation of solar-powered street lighting for the city. Actress Jillian Ward admitted that she’s not ready for a relationship right now even though she just turned 18. That despite the growing list of men trying to court the former child star. “Alam niyo po, nung nag-18 po ako, marami na pong tumatapang at tsaka nagpapa-cute, kaso po hindi po sila nanliligaw kasi hindi po ako nagpapaligaw pa,” Ward was quoted as saying. She said she wanted to give priority to her career which is only starting to take off after she managed to shed that awkward teen stage. The star of “Abot Kamay na Pangarap” admitted that her parents have always been with her, although they are not necessarily strict. “So minsan nga po parang inaano nila lumabas ako, mag-enjoy daw po ako, pero sinasabi ko po hindi, gusto ko po muna na mag-focus sa work, ganyan,” she added.
