PBA teams try to get back into game shape as restart looms

Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Willie Marcial admits that it would take some time for players to get back in game shape after almost five months removed from training due to the pandemic. There’s no doubt that they will show signs of obvious rust.   “Sigurado ‘yun, tinatanong ko ang mga players. Ang hirap magkaroon ng game shape,” said the league official. “Maski mag-practice ka ng ganito tapos scrimmages ka lang ng two to three weeks, hindi mo makukuha ang game shape mo.” “Talagang wala 'yung kondisyon, wala 'yung timing, wala 'yung shooting. So medyo kakalawangin pa ng konti ang mga players,” he added. But Marcial assured PBA fans that teams are now working doubly hard to get their players back into their competitive form as the league prepares for the restart of the Philippine Cup soon – possibly through a ‘bubble concept’ set-up. [Related story: Batangas, Laguna, Araneta all options for 'PBA Bubble'] In fact, at least half of the 12 member clubs have already began their respective individual workouts under a strict health and safety protocol Tuesday morning. [Related story: PBA: Ginebra earliest to start practice under "new normal"] Speaking during the online session of the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum, Marcial, who was joined by league chairman Ricky Vargas of TNT, said that he has full confidence with how teams will whip up their players back into top form. “’Yun ang ginagawa ng mga coaches. ‘Yun ang ginagawa ng buong team na ayusin nila,” said Marcial. “Baka ‘yung iba nga kung may scrimmages twice a day na ‘yan para preparasyon.” The commissioner added that he already reminded the players to show the same level of competitiveness once the government gives the greenlight for games to resume. “[Sabi ko] ‘di tayo pwedeng maglaro na parang scrimmage. Kung maglalaro tayo eh ‘yung talagang totoong laro. Da-dive tayo. Kung ano ang ginagawa natin, may fans o wala, kailangan ‘yun ang gawin natin. Pumayag naman sila,” said Marcial.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Bolick missing good quality basketball between San Beda and LPU

Lyceum of the Philippines University was the biggest thorn of San Beda University during Robert Bolick's time playing for the latter. The Pirates and the Red Lions went at it in the Finals for back-to-back years - back-to-back years that coincided with Bolick's last years in red and white. Of course, San Beda won out both times. Still, the Red Lions were, most definitely, given a good run for their money. Not only that, most, if not all, of those games were neck-and-neck - and Bolick only has fond memories of all of them. "Yung pinakagusto ko sa games namin ng Lyceum, yung pinakahindi ko makakalimutan, yung laro namin, hindi dumi eh. Never kami nagsisikuhan, never kaming naggugulangan," he shared in his appearance on The Prospects Pod with LPU's CJ Perez. He then continued, "Pagalingan lang ng depensa, pagalingan lang kung paano mag-opensa." Indeed, the head-to-head record of the two teams was 5-3 in favor of San Beda. In the three games that went the Pirates' way, they won by an average of 4.7 points. For their part, the Red Lions' average winning margin was 10.4 points. In those eight games, the biggest win was 15 points by the red and white. All of them, apparently, remain must-see TV for Bolick even today. "Palagi ko nga pa ring inuulit sa YouTube. Sabi ko lagi, ang ganda talaga," he said. Up to now, "Big Shot Bolick" is in awe at how San Beda and LPU just tried to outdo each other without ever going overboard. As he put it, "Walang hawakan, dikdikan lang talaga. Good quality basketball talaga." He then continued, "Ang bilis nila tapos kami bagal-bagal yung laro. Ang sarap talaga." --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

PBA: Lee on closed-door games: ' Nakaka-baba ng energy'

The PBA took one major step towards a comeback when it secured government clearance to have teams start practice. If the league does return this year following the COVID-19 pandemic, a "new normal" will have the PBA more than likely play with little to no fans inside the venue. Perhaps, the PBA may actually play behind closed-doors. From a player's perspective, the prospect of playing with no fans can be a little draining. "Medyo iba yung pakiramdam nun, kasi first time mangyari satin sa PBA yun," Magnolia guard Paul Lee said on playing without fans. "Pero na-try namin yun sa FIBA, sa Araneta di ba? Wala talagang tao. Iba yung feeling, nakaka-baba ng energy yung laro, naiisip mo parang nasa practice ka lang," he added. Lee was part of the Gilas Pilipinas team that played Qatar behind closed doors two years ago for the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers. At the time, the Philippines was serving one of its punishments for the Gilas-Australia brawl months prior. "Kailangan masanay tayo sa ganun," Lee said on a recent episode of the PBA's Kamustahan. "Yun lang pwede natin gawin eh, ang importante dito is maka-balik tayong lahat," he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Japan-bound Thirdy Ravena still available for national team call of duty

Thirdy Ravena is doing what's best for his young career. Having signed on to become the first-ever Asian import in Japan's B.League, the three-time Finals MVP with Ateneo de Manila University is ready and raring to stack up where he stands among the region's best. For Ravena, numbers do not matter - all that matters is the valuable experience he would be getting from new competitors in a new arena. "We really just weighed kung ano talaga yung interest ko, kung ano talaga yung gusto kong mangyari. We didn't even pick, if you're wondering, yung highest offer," he shared in The Prospects Pod last Friday. He when continued, "We only picked kung ano talaga yung best fit doon sa hinahanap namin which is yung makakalaro and walang expectation. Yung standing nga nila, ganun so mag-iimprove lang kami from there." San-En NeoPhoenix, the 6-foot-3 swingman's new team, only had five wins to show in 41 games last year. For Ravena, though, that only means there's nowhere to go but up for him and his new team. At the same time, San-En team management has also assured the 23-year-old that they would support him if and when the national team comes calling - as long as schedules are ironed out. "Gusto ko pa rin maglaro for the Philippines so ang importante lang, yung schedule. As long as mag-agree naman both parties, wala akong problema dun," he said. While a place for Ravena in Gilas Pilipinas is yet to be determined, what's certain right now is that he would be suiting up for a team that reportedly has 8,000 Filipinos in its area. "Masarap sa pakiramdam na makakadala ako ng fanbase kahit papaano sa team. Of course, thankful din ako sa suporta nila, sa suporta ng lahat ng mga Pinoy not just sa Japan, but all over the world," he said. He then continued, "Grabe yung pinapakita nilang pagmamahal at pagsuporta. I really can't wait to play kasi binibigay ko rin naman yung laro ko para sa kanila." --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

PBA imports might be gone for a while in post-pandemic sports world

If the PBA gets to play again in 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic, the format will be pretty simple. The league will just continue its stalled 2020 Philippine Cup, where only five-time defending champion San Miguel being on the board with a 1-0 mark after beating Magnolia last March 8. The ongoing All-Filipino conference will just continue with its normal format to finish the year if the PBA gets the go-signal to return. Having a season with no imports will be unprecedented for the PBA, a league with a rich line of talented foreign players since its inception. Imports playing in the PBA might become a difficult topic for the league as it moves on from the coronavirus pandemic. "Ang problema kasi, may papayag bang imports na pumunta dito sa atin ngayon," Commissioner Willie Marcial said during the weekly forum of the Philippine Sportswriters Association. "Syempre, may takot din tayong tanggapin sila sa atin ngayon. Makikipag-laro ba ang players natin sa kanila?" Marcial added. Even if the PBA goes on to have import-laced conferences, typically two out of the three tournament the league plays each season, current health protocols might make the import process all the more complicated. Such health protocols, like enforcing self-quarantine periods, might as well last until no vaccine for COVID-19 is found. "Kung may pumunta man, kailangan pa ng 14-day quarantine period. Pag nagpalit ka ng import, another 14-day quarantine period," Marcial said. "Posibleng no imports," the Commissioner added.     — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

First title with TNT was the best for Ranidel De Ocampo

Before finally retiring from basketball, Ranidel De Ocampo sure had a colorful career in the PBA and for Gilas Pilipinas. RDO won six championships in the PBA and became a national team legend for his great work for Gilas. Retiring as one of the true greats, De Ocampo says there's two moments that really stood out from his career. "Syempre yung laban natin sa South Korea, FIBA-Asia 2013," RDO told Beau Belga on Extra Rice. Seven years ago, the Philippines beat South Korea in the semifinals of the 2013 FIBA-Asia Championships in Manila. The victory allowed the national team to advance to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. "Yung silver medal natin at naka-balik tayo sa World Cup, yun ang highlight ng career ko," De Ocampo added. In the PBA, RDO says his first-ever title is the best. After his Air21 Express lost the 2008 Fiest Conference Finals in seven games to Ginebra, RDO found himself traded to Talk 'N Text. De Ocampo's first game for Talk 'N Text was against the Express on Christmas Day 2008. He sank the final basket as TNT escaped with a 109-108 win. RDO ended up becoming the missing piece for the Tropang Texters that would go on to win the 2009 Philippine Cup, beating Alaska after seven games in the Finals. De Ocampo would be with TNT until 2017. Kaya yun ang pinaka-memorable sakin," he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
