OVP sets up more learning hubs in areas with internet access concerns

With the ongoing distance learning classes, Vice President Leni Robredo’s office continues to set up more learning hubs in communities nationwide to address internet access concerns. (OVP / MANILA BULLETIN) Robredo announced the opening of 55 additional learning hubs soon in areas where they are needed on top of the 13 pilot sites. She gave the public a first glimpse of the learning hub during a tour on Monday in Barangay Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City. Joining her was Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto. “We are excited because we have opened 13 of these hubs during the first month. I will also visit the others,” Robredo, who went live on her Facebook account, said in Filipino. “Hopefully, this week and next week. We will then open 55 other sites,” she added. For the pilot run of the learning hub in Pasig City, Robredo’s office partnered with JCI Manila and Catholic group “Ligaya ng Panginoon (Joy of the Lord).” Six students can only be accommodated per schedule in the learning center, where health and safety protocols are strictly being observed. The walk-ins are not allowed so students who wish to use the hub should pre-register for their assigned schedules. The Office of the Vice President initiated the establishment of the community learning hubs as part of its Bayanihan E-skwela program to help students who don’t have the capacity to study at home. House’s PhilHealth probe temporarily shelved

The Lower Chamber’s continued probe on the graft and corruption cases in Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) will be temporarily shelved after the House leadership decided to cancel all committee meetings or hearings for one week starting Monday, Oct. 19.  This was disclosed by Anakalusugan partylist Rep. Michael Defensor, chairperson of the House Committee on Public Accounts, in a Viber message to the House media, a day before the scheduled joint investigation of the House Committees on Public Accounts and Good Government and Public Accountability on the PhilHealth anomalies.  “In compliance with the memo of the Majority Leader as per guidance of the Speaker, all committee hearings are cancelled temporarily for the leadership to regroup and coordinate priority legislative measures. I apologize for this, but I’m assured the Committee on Public Accounts may resume its deliberations after this,” Defensor said.  This week, eight committee meetings/hearings have been scheduled.  House Majority Leader and Leyte 1st District Rep. Martin Romualdez issued a one-page memorandum to all committee chairpersons directing the cancellation of meetings.  “Upon the instructions of the Speaker, all committee meetings/hearings are hereby ordered cancelled for the period October 19-26, 2020. This is to allow the House to review and refocus its priorities for the 2nd Regular session,” according to the memo dated October 18. Aside from the House Committees on Public Accounts and Good Government and Public Accountability, the House Committees on Rural Development,  People’s Participation, Public Works and Highways, Suffrage and Electoral Reforms, Aquaculture and Fisheries, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and Overseas Workers Affairs are scheduled to conduct meetings this week.  The meeting of the Public Works and Highways was already marked as cancelled, according to the chamber’s committee schedule posted on its website......»»

Dara holds live broadcast to celebrate reaching 1 million subscribers on YouTube

Dara, aka Sandara Park, held a live broadcast on Oct. 16 to celebrate her milestone of getting one million subscribers on her YouTube channel Dara TV. People from different countries tuned in to watch Dara’s broadcast where she thanked subscribers, gave updates about herself, discussed her plans and raffled off personal items to mark the occasion. Her YouTube subscribers reached one million on Oct. 10 and she tweeted, “Happy 1M subscribers #DaraTV Thank you so much everyone!!! Maraming salamat sa inyong lahat!!! #DaraTV1Million.” “This is the first time I’m doing YouTube Live and the comments are coming in so fast we can’t even read it,” Dara said during the broadcast. She added, “I’ve been doing YouTube for three years and there are about 60 videos uploaded on my channel. But, guys, that is amazing because I still hit one million. Thank you to everyone who subscribed.” Dara also revealed that she put on some weight and she’s very happy about it, saying, “I gained some weight for the first time in my life. I’ve been 38 to 39 kilos. I’ve finally gained six kilos.” “A lot of people were worried about me. I look more mature and I’m very pleased. The sad part about gaining weight is I don’t fit into all of my clothes anymore. I recently donated my clothes to my niece and nephews. I’m gonna shop for some jeans next week. My jeans don’t fit me anymore,” she said. She told her Pinoy fans, “Kamusta kayong lahat? Nagustuhan nyo ba yung recent upload ko sa DaraTV, yung Philippine market? Super enjoy ako dun. Ang ginawa ko dun nagpicture lang pero nag-enjoy pa rin ako (How are you? Did you like my recent upload on DaraTV about the Philippine market? I enjoyed it. I only took photos but I still enjoyed it).” In a video she uploaded on Oct. 3, Dara went to a Filipino street market near the Hyehwadong Catholic Church in Hyehwa-dong in Jongno, Seoul where she got to mingle and take photos with Pinoys and Koreans. Every Sunday, hundreds of Filipinos go to the street market to eat, buy Filipino food and products. The video now has more than 2 million views on YouTube. Dara also ranked the top five countries that watch her YouTube videos the most and the Philippines emerged as No. 1. “Maraming salamat sa inyong lahat. Grabe number one talaga kayo (Thank you very much. You are really number one). I love it because I started my career there. I miss you guys. I’m always thankful for support,” she said. Dara during her live broadcast on YouTube (Screenshot from Dara’s video) The US placed second with Dara saying, “Thank you so much for supporting DaraTV. South Korea, her home country, is third. She commented, “Even though I have a lot of content outside of Korea, im very thankful that I have a lot of Korean subscribers.” “Thank you so much, Indonesia,” she said as the country placed fourth while United Arab Emirates is fifth and Dara said, “I’ve never been there but I really wanna go.” Dara thanked viewers for enjoying her video with CL and said she also wants “to go to Minzy’s dance academy to learn and dance there.” She was asked what was most memorable during the music video shoot with Park Bom and she said, “It’s always very chaotic when I’m with her. The most memorable thing about that shoot is that it had to be very serious but she just made me laugh so much and she asked why I wasn’t being all ‘hip-hoppy’ for my web scene but I just enjoyed that shoot a lot because it was so funny.” Dara started her showbiz career in the Philippines and left it to debut in 2NE1 in 2009. The group disbanded in 2016. She is still under YG Entertainment. She was asked if she’s going to blog about a tour of the new YG Entertainment headquarters located in Hapjeong in Mapo District, Seoul. “Next year, maybe. Still a work in progress. It looks very futuristic, very cool looking. Kinda looks like a music video set,” she said. One commented that Dara has no problem buying new clothes but she said “I can’t shop that much these days because I want to save more money [because of the ongoing pandemic].” “We should all save money. Since we can’t perform and also everyone around the world, we have to save our money. We’re just being very mindful here. I’m very thankful because I’ve been working so much. I just came back from a schedule and this entire week I had schedules and it looks like I will be very busy next week as well so I’m very thankful for my job,” she said. She said the upcoming episodes on DaraTV include staycation and cooking episodes. To celebrate the milestone, Dara raffled off bracelets and Polaroid photos, and her own clothes. Dara will also be hosting the second season of the TV show “Idol League” with BTOB’s Eunkwang and the first episode is set on Oct. 17. About her plans, she said, “Right now, I’m gonna focus on emceeing and you guys can look forward to that. You guys might see something related to acting because I’ve been talking to my musical friend. And for music, it’s always on my mind. We are all working on it so stay tuned.” Caption Dara during her live broadcast on YouTube (Screenshot from Dara’s video).....»»

PBA sees condensed conference schedule in restart

The Philippine Basketball Association is looking at a possible condensed tournament as soon as the government gives the go-signal to resume competition amid the pandemic. League Commissioner Willie Marcial said that the Philippine Cup could run within a month or two depending on the game schedule the PBA Board will approve. “May nakaplano na kami. Nagpagawa na ako ng shortened at yung full conference na laro. So ipi-present pa rin namin sa Board,” said Marcial on Tuesday during the online session of the Philippine Sportswriters’ Association Forum. [Related story: Batangas, Laguna, Araneta all options for 'PBA Bubble'] Marcial also mentioned that the TV coverage schedule will also be a big factor in deciding the length of the PBA restart.   The PBA’s broadcast partner has allotted three TV coverage schedule per week. “Kasi mayroon tayong [dami] parang appearance ng teams kada conference so kailangang pag-usapan yun. Baka hindi natin ma-meet yun,” Marcial said. “Tapos ang problema ko ‘yung araw-araw. Ang ibinibigay lang sa atin ng TV5 Wednesday, Friday, Sunday.” In this set-up, the conference would run for two months. Another option that the PBA is looking at is to hold games every day with some playdates airing on other available channels of its broadcast partner. “Siguro puwede tayong mag-araw-araw pero di sa TV5. Nandyan ang One Sports, Rush, Cignal. Madami pang pag-uusapan tungkol doon,” said Marcial. This according to the official is one of the matters that the Board will discuss in another round of meeting which will also include the proposal adapting a ‘bubble concept’ for the season to push through.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Spurs keep playoff hopes alive with 123-105 win over Rockets

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Spurs aren’t out of it yet. Keldon Johnson had 24 points and 11 rebounds, and San Antonio kept alive its chances of becoming the first team in NBA history to make 23 consecutive playoff appearances with a 123-105 victory over the Houston Rockets on Tuesday (Wednesday in the Philippines). San Antonio has won three straight and five out of seven since arriving in the Florida bubble. DeMar DeRozan added 23 points. Jakob Poeltl finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. A total of seven Spurs reached double figures. Johnson said his mindset since the season restarted has been to fill in whatever role is asked of him. “Whether it's hustling, running the floor — just doing whatever I need to do to help us win,” he said. “Help from my teammates has definitely helped the game slow down for me." Popovich said Johnson is playing with the confidence they saw when they drafted him 29th overall last year. “That’s what he does," Popovich said. "He’s a high-energy guy. He's very physical. Very competitive. Very coachable. He’s just a winner.” The Western Conference is guaranteed to have a play-in for its final playoff spot, with Memphis beginning the day with just a half-game lead over Portland and one game ahead of Phoenix and San Antonio. The Spurs will need help to be one of the teams playing this weekend for the final spot in the West, but made sure they couldn't be eliminated Tuesday with their win. Russell Westbrook had 20 points and seven turnovers in his first game back in the lineup for Houston after missing two games with a bruised right quadriceps. Jeff Green had 17 points. Ben McLemore added 16. The Rockets played without guards James Harden (rest) and Eric Gordon (ankle). Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said the most important part of their final two games before the playoffs will be getting Westbrook some quality minutes so that he is fresh. “Get some of the rust off, build up his legs a little bit,” D'Antoni said. “We'll try to get through these two games and just try to get guys physically ready to go next week.” Westbrook said he isn't worried about finding his timing before the playoffs begin. “I'll get it back,” he said. The Spurs took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Rockets 35-24. San Antonio led by as many as 29 points. San Antonio built a 19-point lead in the first half. DeRozan set the tone with 15 points in the opening 24 minutes, with Lonnie Waker IV, Poeltl and Johnson each scoring 10. TIP-INS Rockets: Went 14 of 48 from the 3-point line. ... Danuel House Jr. sat out with a toe injury. Spurs: Patty Mills (rest) missed his third straight game. WIN-WIN Regardless of whether the Spurs make the playoffs, Popovich is proud of how his young players have stepped up in during their time in the bubble. “Part of it is you have to be realistic,” Popovich said. “I don’t think our chances of winning the championship were great at the beginning of this, nor are they now. If that’s a fact, then you need to do everything you can to develop and be prepared for next season. “The development has been off the charts. We’re thrilled with it. So it’s a win-win no matter what.” Popovich said it would be “thrilling” to get some help and have a chance to extend their season, but he’s not using it as a measuring stick for the season. “We’ve already accomplished what we thought we were capable of accomplishing, that’s what’s important. If we got in now it would be icing on the cake.” UP NEXT Rockets: Play Pacers on Wednesday (Thursday in the Philippines) Spurs: Conclude their seeding schedule Thursday (Friday in the Philippines) against Utah......»»
