NBA 2K League to tip off 2020 season with remote gameplay

The NBA 2K League announced on Monday that the start of its 2020 regular season will begin Tuesday, May 5 (Wednesday, May 6 in the Philippines) with at least six weeks of remote gameplay.  All 23 NBA 2K League teams will participate in regular-season gameplay from their local markets with games simulcast live on the NBA 2K League’s Twitch and YouTube channels. Games will begin at 7 p.m. ET every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (7 a.m Philippine time every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday with four distinct matchups each night.  Over the course of the six weeks of remote gameplay, each team is scheduled to play at least eight matches that will count toward its regular-season record.  Each match will be played in a best-of-three format, which will allow the NBA 2K League broadcast to switch between games in real-time and give fans more opportunities to experience the league’s most exciting moments.  Each three-game-series victory will represent one regular-season win, and each three-game-series loss will represent one regular-season loss.  The start-of-season game schedule will be announced in the coming days. The 2020 season will once again include three in-season tournaments (THE TIPOFF, THE TURN and THE TICKET), in which teams compete for banners that link together to form THE BANNER CHAIN powered by AT&T.  All 23 teams will compete in THE TIPOFF and THE TURN.  The 14 teams that are not one of the top nine playoff seeds will compete in THE TICKET, which will see the winning team earn the 10th and final spot in the 2020 NBA 2K League Playoffs.  In addition, select NBA 2K League teams will host rivalry matches and round-robin events.  The remainder of the 2020 season schedule and structure, including the dates of tournaments, rivalry matches and round-robin events, will be shared as information becomes available. The NBA 2K League will implement an innovative production model that allows for a remote broadcast in all 23 team markets and NBA 2K League broadcasters to announce games in their homes from a virtual NBA 2K League Studio, while switching between games occurring at the same time.  “We are thrilled to officially tip off the 2020 NBA 2K League season remotely and hope the excitement of NBA 2K League competition provides both new and returning fans with a fun way to stay connected and engage with our league during these unprecedented times,” said NBA 2K League Managing Director Brendan Donohue.  “Our players have been quarantining with their teammates as they prepare for the season and will now have the opportunity to compete against one another and show they are the best players in the world.” New for the 2020 season, the NBA 2K League has launched a campaign entitled, “THIS IS NOT A GAME.”  From the NBA 2K League Combine to the Draft, regular season to the Finals, the NBA 2K League is more than just a game; it’s a way of life filled with hours of practice and preparation for a season of challenges where only one team can emerge as champions.  For the latest news and updates on the NBA 2K League and #ThisIsNotAGame, fans can sign up to receive emails at NBA2KLeague.com and follow the NBA 2K League on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Twitch and YouTube. By The Associated Press The Rogers Cup women’s tennis tournament will not be played this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tennis Canada announced the event, scheduled for Aug. 7-16 in Montreal, is off the schedule. Quebec’s government announced Friday that no sporting events could be held through Aug. 31, though it left the door slightly open for pro teams. “Our priority in the management of this crisis has always been to ensure the safety and well-being of our players, fans, volunteers, partners and employees," Montreal tournament director Eugene Lapierre said. "It is thus with a heavy heart that we received this news, but we understand that this decision was necessary.” Tennis Canada says the women’s event will return to Montreal in August 2021. Bianca Andreescu won the 2019 Rogers Cup when Serena Williams retired in the first set with a back injury. The women’s and men’s Rogers Cup traditionally rotate between Toronto and Montreal. As of Saturday, the men’s event in Toronto in August was still on the schedule. ___ Geraint Thomas is still hoping the Tour de France can go ahead at some point in 2020 and believes he is in good shape to go for a second yellow jersey. The Tour, set to take place between June 27 and July 19, has yet to be postponed or canceled but with sporting events all over the world impacted by the coronavirus pandemic its chances of surviving as scheduled appear remote. Thomas, the 2018 champion, also announced a charity ride - in his garage - in support of Britain's National Health Service. “I think I’m in my prime at the moment,” the Welshman told BBC Radio Five Live. “Obviously there are bigger things that need to be sorted out first but as soon as it’s safe and ready to go ahead we’d love it to happen. I’m praying and hoping it goes ahead at some point." Team Ineos rider Egan Bernal won the 2019 edition......»»

PBA Finals: Busy season ends with sweet title for Ginebra

It's been a pretty incredible last few months for head coach Time Cone and Barangay Ginebra. With the core of the Gin Kings on deck, coach Tim led Gilas Pilipinas to a gold medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games last December. With all of the Gin Kings, Coach Tim led the barangay to another PBA Governors' Cup title to start the year 2020 right. "It was nice because there was a lot on our plates as a Ginebra team," Cone said after Ginebra beat Meralco in Game 5 Friday to win the Governors' Cup Finals. "But you know I think, in many ways, the schedules kinda favored us because each time we had a break to kinda gather ourselves and get back. We were fortunate to have a favored schedule," he added. True enough, the Gin Kings got a favorable schedule on their way to a latest title despite literally being the busiest team all conference long. The PBA took a break to give way for the SEA Games. After the semis, where Ginebra beat Northport after four games, the league took another break for Christmas and New Year. In the actual Governors' Cup Finals, Ginebra also got some lucky breaks, with Meralco's star center Raymond Almazan going down with an injury in Game 3. Ginebra got its breaks and the Gin Kings took advantage of every single one of them. "But then again, you need those kind of things to win a championship," Coach Tim said, who should know since he now has 22 PBA titles. "You need those little breaks to happen for you," he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Serena vs. Sharapova set for prime time on Day 1 of US Open

By Howard Fendrich, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams vs. Maria Sharapova is, not surprisingly, getting primetime billing at the U.S. Open. The two tennis stars' 22nd career meeting — and first at Flushing Meadows — will be the opening act in Arthur Ashe Stadium for the night session on Monday as the year's last Grand Slam tournament gets started. "Of course I'm going to watch it. I know you all are going to watch it. I think everyone in New York is going to watch it," defending champion and No. 1 seed Naomi Osaka said Friday. "Yeah, I mean, for me, I'm not that surprised that that happened, because, like, at every Grand Slam, there is always some sort of drama. You know what I mean? Like a first round. Like, 'Oh, my God!'" The U.S. Tennis Association announced the show-court schedules for both Day 1 and Day 2. That includes 15-year-old Coco Gauff in action at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Tuesday. The first match in the main stadium Monday will be French Open champion Ash Barty against Zarina Diyas, followed by defending men's champion and No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic against Roberto Carballes Baena. Then at night, Williams-Sharapova will be followed by 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer against qualifier Sumit Nagal. Williams owns 23 major singles trophies, while Sharapova has five. Both have been ranked No. 1. They've met at every other major tournament at least once, including in a final at each, but never before at the U.S. Open. Williams has won 18 matches in a row against Sharapova, and leads their overall series 19-2. In Louis Armstrong Stadium on Monday, the day slate includes Williams' older sister, two-time U.S. Open champion Venus, 2016 runner-up Karolina Pliskova and No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev, while the night program features three-time major champ Stan Wawrinka and 2017 U.S. Open runner-up Madison Keys. Tuesday's participants in Ashe include Osaka and two-time French Open finalist Dominic Thiem during the afternoon, with 18-time major title winner Rafael Nadal and 2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens in action at night. In addition to Gauff's first-round match against Anastasia Potapova, Day 2 in Armstrong will include two-time major champion Simona Halep and Australian Open semifinalist Stefanos Tsitsipas in the afternoon, along with two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka and the combustible Nick Kyrgios against American Steve Johnson at night. ___ RULES RECAP In an effort to avoid the sort of confusion that reigned over last year's U.S. Open final between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, the U.S. Tennis Association wants to make the sport's rules — and chair umpires' rulings — clearer to on-site spectators and TV viewers. So when a player is warned by an official about a code violation — getting coaching during a match, say, or destroying a racket — that will be displayed on the scoreboard. "It's not a constant marker there," U.S. Open chief umpire Jake Garner said Friday. "It's just when the violation occurs, it will show up on the board at the moment it's given." The USTA decided against allowing match officials speak to the media after a contest involving controversy or questions, but Garner or tournament referee Soeren Friemel — both are new appointees — might be made available. Two other rules tweaks this year: The excessive heat rule will allow for 10-minute breaks for all men's or women's matches, whether or not they already were in progress when the weather reached a point of being dangerous to players; women can now only have one bathroom or change-of-clothing break per three-set match, not two. ___ TOKYO'S TEAM? Host Japan might not get to field its dream mixed doubles team for tennis at the next year's Summer Olympics. That's because Kei Nishikori thinks playing with Naomi Osaka might just be too much tennis in Tokyo. The 2014 U.S. Open runner-up is planning to play singles and men's doubles at the 2020 Games and for now isn't thinking about adding mixed doubles to his plans. "Very hot, very humid, playing singles and two doubles — I don't know if I can," Nishikori said at Flushing Meadows on Friday. A Nishikori-Osaka duo not only would be expected to contend for a medal in Tokyo — it would be among the most popular pairings in Olympic tennis history. Osaka, who moved from Japan to the United States when she was 3, is the No. 1 ranked women's player and the reigning champion at both the U.S. Open and Australian Open. Nishikori, who also left Japan to live in the United States, is No. 7 in the current ATP rankings. At last year's U.S. Open, he and Osaka became the first Japanese male and female players to reach the semifinals of the same Grand Slam tournament. They're also friends who have played video games together. But what about Olympic tennis together? "I haven't thought too much yet, honestly," Nishikori said. "I don't know. I will talk to Naomi later." ___ AP Sports Writer Brian Mahoney contributed to this report......»»
