World pledges help to quake-hit Morocco
Morocco said late Sunday it was accepting offers from just four countries: Britain, Spain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, after the earthquake that has killed more than 2,100 people. But countries around the world have lined up to offer to help Morocco. International aid agencies The International Federation for Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has released over $1 million from its emergency disaster fund to support the Moroccan Red Crescent's work on the ground. "The next 24 to 48 hours will be critical in terms of saving lives," the global humanitarian network warned on Saturday, adding that help could be needed for months or even years. Spain Spain on Sunday sent 86 military rescuers and eight search dogs to Morocco after receiving a formal request for help from Rabat. A first team, from the armed forces Emergencies Unit, took off in an A400 military plane bound for Marrakesh to "help in the search and rescue of survivors", the defense ministry said. Another military plane took off from a base in Torrejon de Ardoz near Madrid, an interior ministry spokesman said. Qatar Qatar said it was also sending a rescue team. France A team of French volunteer firefighters has arrived in Morocco and President Emmanuel Macron said more, substantial assistance was available, should Morocco request it. "We have mobilized all technical and security teams to be able to intervene when the Moroccan authorities deem it useful." United States The United States has told Morocco it is "ready to provide significant assistance" including search and rescue teams. "We are also ready to release funds at the right time that can help the Moroccans recover and deal with this horrific tragedy," Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer said. "The United States will be with them at every step of the way when they are ready to avail themselves of what we have to offer," he added. Switzerland Switzerland has offered to provide temporary shelters, water treatment and distribution equipment, sanitation facilities, and hygiene kits. Belgium Belgium has offered help including medical teams and field hospitals. The Flanders region, home to a large Moroccan community, said it would provide 200,000 euros ($214,270) in emergency aid through the Red Cross, while the Wallonia region has pledged to provide 500,000 euros. Italy Italy has offered the help of its civil protection agency and fire service, while the Italian Catholic Church has sent 300,000 euros ($321,400) in aid through NGO Caritas Italy. Italian President Sergio Mattarella on Saturday stressed Italy's "willingness to contribute to the complex rescue work". Turkey Turkey has offered to send 265 rescue workers and 1,000 tents. Poland and Israel Poland and Israel said they were ready to provide assistance including search and rescue teams. Iraq and Jordan Iraq and Jordan have offered to provide all possible forms of assistance to Morocco. Organizations The heads of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, African Union, and the European Commission, together with the presidents of France and India, pledged in a joint statement to "mobilize our technical and financial tools and assistance" to help Morocco. Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca "pledged over $1 million to support immediate humanitarian relief efforts with leading global non-profit humanitarian partners and through matching of employee donations". Contagion brings public, private sector together — GoNegosyo
If there was anything good that the COVID-19 pandemic brought, it was the coming together of the public and private sectors, according to Go Negosyo founder and chairperson Joey Concepcion following the lifting of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the State of Public Health Emergency on Saturday. “The pandemic brought public and private sector together. It showed that government and industry coming together can make a strong team against any adversity,” said Concepcion. “It’s the best time as the President delivers his State of the Nation address,” he said. Concepcion, who served as Presidential Adviser on Entrepreneurship under the Duterte administration, became one of the most visible public figures during the pandemic. Together with members of the private sector, he led the Project Ark initiative to make mass testing accessible and spearheaded "A Dose of Hope," a world’s-first tripartite agreement that made vaccines available despite bureaucratic hurdles. Concepcion also organized town hall meetings and supported the participation of doctors and scientists in forming policy regarding the pandemic. “Credit should go to the leadership of people like Sec. Ted Herbosa, Sec Francisco Duque, Sec. Charlie Galvez, Sec. Delfin Lorenzana, Sec. Eduardo Ano, Sec. Dominguez, Sec. Nograles, Sec. Vince Dizon, Usec. Rosette, the doctors and scientists who were all ready to work with one another,” he said. He also cited the efforts of the private sector. “The first vaccine the private sector brought in was AstraZeneca. With the help of the government, it was granted an EUA (emergency use of authority) which allowed us to bring it in at a special price and donate half to the government. That is one great effort that showed teamwork was key,” he said. “The pandemic destroyed lives and livelihoods, but on the bright side brought us all together to survive and win this war. It also pushed many Filipinos to digitalize starting with E-wallets for contactless transactions. Today, digitalization is bringing about greater inclusivity with almost all Filipinos using e-wallets. This is one reason why economic recovery bounced back strongly,” he added. Concepcion warned, however, that COVID still remains, and that people should continue to be vigilant. “We should focus on producing more nurses and health care professionals. The Philippines is now at the center of this huge opportunity; we need to upskill those who want to be in this field as the world needs our nurses. Now we need to grow our economy and create more jobs and livelihoods,” he said. The post Contagion brings public, private sector together — GoNegosyo appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Pill halves risk of death in lung cancer
A pill has been shown to halve the risk of death from a certain type of lung cancer when taken daily after surgery to remove the tumor, according to clinical trial results presented on Sunday. The results were unveiled in Chicago at the largest annual conference of cancer specialists, hosted by the American Society for Clinical Oncology. Lung cancer is the form of the disease that causes the most deaths, with approximately 1.8 million fatalities every year worldwide. The treatment developed by the pharmaceutical group AstraZeneca is called osimertinib and is marketed under the name Tagrisso. It targets a particular type of lung cancer in patients suffering from so-called non-small cell cancer, the most common type, and showing a particular type of mutation. These mutations, on what is called the epidermal growth factor receptor, or EGFR, affect 10 percent to 25 percent of lung cancer patients in the United States and Europe, and 30 to 40 percent in Asia. The clinical trial included some 680 participants at an early stage of the disease (stages 1b to 3a), in more than 20 countries. They had to have been operated on first to remove the tumor, then half of the patients took the treatment daily, and the other a placebo. The result showed that taking the tablet resulted in a 51 percent reduction in the risk of death for treated patients, compared to placebo. After five years, 88 percent of patients who took the treatment were still alive, compared to 78 percent of patients who took the placebo. These data are “impressive,” Roy Herbst of Yale University, who presented them in Chicago, said. The drug helps “prevent the cancer from spreading to the brain, to the liver, to the bones,” he added at a press conference. About a third of cases of non-small cell cancers can be operated on when detected, he said. Osimertinib is already authorized in dozens of countries for various indications, and has already been given to some 700,000 people, according to a press release from AstraZeneca. Its approval in the US for early stages in 2020 was based on previous data that showed an improvement in patient disease-free survival, that is, the time a patient lives without a recurrence of cancer. Osimertinib, which targets the receptor, causes side effects that include as severe fatigue, skin rashes or diarrhea. About a third of cases of non-small cell cancers can be operated on when detected, he said. Already on the market "It is hard for me to convey, I think, how important this finding is," said Nathan Pennell of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation at the press conference. "We started entering the personalized therapy era for early stage patients," said Pennell, who did not take part in the trials, and noted that "we should firmly close the door on one-size-fits-all treatment for people with non- small cell lung cancer." Osimertinib is already authorized in dozens of countries for various indications, and has already been given to some 700,000 people, according to a press release from AstraZeneca. Its approval in the United States for early stages in 2020 was based on previous data that showed an improvement in patient disease-free survival, that is, the time a patient lives without a recurrence of cancer. But not all doctors have adopted the treatment, and many were waiting for the data on overall survival that was presented on Sunday, said Herbst. He stressed the need to screen patients to find out if they have the EGFR mutation. Otherwise, he said, "we cannot use this new treatment." Osimertinib, which targets the receptor, causes side effects that include as severe fatigue, skin rashes or diarrhea.
