DOH belies alleged spike in respiratory diseases in Batangas City
The Department of Health on Sunday denied claims that there was a reported increase in the number of respiratory diseases and cardiovascular diseases linked to emissions from liquefied natural gas power plants in Batangas City. In an interview with Daily Tribune, Dr. Voltaire S. Guadalupe, head of the DOH-Center for Health Development Calabarzon Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management in Health, said that there were no reported increases in both respiratory and cardiovascular diseases in Batangas City. “We’d like to clarify. That is not the statement from the Department of Health. For the lack of a better term, I am not sure how they want to be addressed, the ‘lobbyists’ did claim that there is an increase in the number of respiratory diseases,” Guadalupe said. “But as for our official data from the Department of Health as reported by the local government reports, [based on] the tally of consultations, there is no noticeable increase in diseases – whether respiratory or not in Batangas City,” he added. He continued: “To say things briefly, there is no increase or noticeable difference in trends in the number of respiratory diseases or other diseases, so we cannot link the establishment as of this time.” Last week, a multisectoral group composed of medical, and legal practitioners, and environmentalists, along with residents from Batangas City called on the Department of Health to conduct a full-blown investigation into the hazardous effects of LNG power plants in Batangas City. Citing a report from the Batangas City Health Office, the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice said there is a reported increase in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases due to exposure to emissions from LNG power plants in the province of Batangas. There are at least six LNG power plants in the country, five of which are located in Batangas. The five communities that host these facilities are Ilijan, Malitam, Sta. Rita Karsada, Tabangao Ambulong, and Tabangao Aplaya. PMCJ National Coordinator Ian Rivera said at least 4,000 residents from the affected barangays in the province of Batangas have complained about difficulty in breathing. Over the weekend, the DOH-CHD Calabarzon said it had started its investigation into the reported spike in cases of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases in Batangas City. “Upon directives from DOH Secretary Teodoro ‘Ted’ Herbosa, we have launched an investigation to validate the reported increase in cases of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases in Batangas City in collaboration with the City Health Office,” said DOH Calabarzon Regional Director Ariel Valencia. Valencia said the department would look into other relevant documents such as the baseline data on air and water quality in the area, as well as the health of the affected communities. He also noted that a team from the department had paid a courtesy call to Batangas City Mayor Beverley Rose Dimacuha-Mariño, and visited at least two power plants in Batangas City. “Initially based on the pooled data of morbidity and mortality cases from the city health office, we have not yet seen any link to power plant operations,” he said. The claim was supported by Guadalupe, stressing that the department could not say now whether there is a link between the alleged increase in respiratory diseases to the operations of power plants in the area as the power plants they have visited -- Linseed Field Corp., and Excellent Energy Resources Inc. – are not yet operating. “We cannot say that there will be any associated diseases because the plants are not yet operating,” he said. “We saw data from several years back, approximately five years back, and we did not see any increase aside from the fact that there is a seasonal variation for flu which is accepted,” he added. Guadalupe stressed that over the past years, the number of respiratory diseases and cardiovascular diseases in Batangas City had decreased. “With regards to the operations of the power plants, in truth, we can see a decreased in the number of cases of respiratory diseases,” he said. DOH expects increase in leptospirosis cases in coming weeks
Cases of leptospirosis in the country are expected to increase in the coming weeks as some areas in the country are still submerged in flood waters brought by Typhoon "Egay", the Department of Health said Sunday. At the Kapihan sa QC, Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said the agency is prepared for the expected influx of leptospirosis cases, particularly in the Central Region, where most provinces are still submerged in floods. “I am expecting that the cases of leptospirosis will increase. Surely, many people will contract leptospirosis in the coming weeks,” Herbosa said. He noted that prior to the onslaught of Typhoon last month, the DoH had sent thousands of doses of antibiotics to the Ilocos region due to the expected influx of leptospirosis cases in the area. “Region 3 has many stockpiles. In fact, it is already prepared,” he stressed, after pointing out the floods in Bulacan and Pampanga. The Health chief reminded the public to avoid contacting flood waters, especially those who have open wounds. “Maybe we should tell the public that flood waters are dirty. If you stayed in flood waters even if you don’t have to, you are at risk,” he said. “If you have wounds on your feet, you should not submerge yourself in the flood,” he added. Herbosa urged those who have open wounds on their feet yet submerged themselves in flood waters to consult their doctors to get a prescription against leptospirosis. From 18 June to 1 July alone, the Health department recorded a total of 182 new cases of leptospirosis, a 42 percent increase from 128 cases reported two weeks prior. Central Luzon exhibited a continuous increase in cases in the recent six weeks reporting nine cases from 2 to 15 July. Meanwhile, nine regions, namely National Capital Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, and Caraga, showed an increase in cases in the last three to four weeks with seven to 53 new cases. Ilocos Norte and Bicol, however, had an increase in cases in the recent two weeks with nine and three cases reported, respectively. “Cases may still increase with late reports,” the agency said. In terms of fatality, a total of 225 died from 2,079 leptospirosis cases from 1 January to 15 July. From 18 June to 1 July alone, the Health department recorded a total of 182 new cases of leptospirosis, a 42-percent increase from 128 cases reported two weeks prior. Central Luzon exhibited a continuous increase in cases in the recent six weeks, reporting nine cases from 2 to 15 July. Meanwhile, nine regions, namely National Capital Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region and Caraga, showed an increase in cases in the last three to four weeks with seven to 53 new cases. Dengue The agency also reported an increase in the number of dengue cases in the country. In the last three weeks, the country logged a total of 9,486 cases, a 16 percent increase compared to the previous two weeks. All regions except Cagayan Valley, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and Caraga showed an increase in cases over the last three to four weeks. From 1 January to 15 July, 990 out of 80,318 cases were tagged as severe dengue. The agency recorded a total of 299 deaths in cases, of which 39 had dengue without warning signs. Herbosa thumbs down revival of Dengvaxia vaccines
Newly sworn Health Secretary Ted Herbosa on Wednesday rejected the possibility of the reuse of the controversial Dengvaxia vaccine. In an ambush interview a day after he took his oath before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Malacañang Palace, Herbosa simply said “no,” when asked if he is keen on the possibility of reusing the dengue vaccine. He issued the remarks amid the rising cases of dengue in the country, which are about to reach the 50,000 mark. Based on the latest Disease Surveillance Report of the Department of Health (DOH), there were 48,109 cases of dengue reported for the period of 1 January to 13 May, which is 38 percent higher compared to the 34,963 dengue cases reported during the same period last year. The majority of the dengue cases were recorded in the National Capital Region(6,395), Calabarzon (5,135), Davao Region (4,842) and Central Luzon (4,722). Meanwhile, comparing data from the same period last year, Mimaropa has recorded the greatest number of cases from 704 to 3,281, which is equivalent to 366 percent. In 2017, the Food and Drug Administration ordered the suspension of the sale, distribution, and marketing of the Dengvaxia vaccine and the withdrawal of the product from the market after Sanofi Pasteur announced that its vaccine could pose risks to those who have never had dengue but were vaccinated. Last July, then Health officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the Health department would review the use of dengue vaccines amid increasing dengue cases in the country. Phl logs 7 Arcturus cases
The Philippines has detected seven new cases of Omicron subvariant XBB.1.16, also known as the Arcturus variant in the country, bringing the total caseload to 11. Based on the latest genomic sequencing data by the University of the Philippines-Philippine Genome Center from 9 to 11 May, seven were classified as Arcturus cases out of the 137 sequenced samples. Of the newly detected Arcturus cases, two were found in Western Visayas, and two in Central Luzon. The Cordillera Administrative Region, MIMAROPA and Bicol Region also reported one case each. The Department of Health previously confirmed local transmission of the Arcturus variant in the country, following the detection of more cases of the Omicron subvariant. Last month, the country logged its first Arcturus case, which was detected in Iloilo in Western Visayas. The first Arcturus case was asymptomatic and already recovered from Covid-19, according to the DoH. Meanwhile, the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines Inc. said there has been an increase in the number of hospital admissions due to Covid-19. In an interview with Daily Tribune, PHAPi president Dr. Jose Rene De Grano said that there had been a 30 percent to 60 percent increase in Covid-19 admissions in private hospitals. “Unfortunately, Covid-19 hospital admissions are still in an upward trend although it is gradual. It is not that high,” he said. According to De Grano, most hospital admissions due to Covid-19 occurred in the National Capital Region and Calabarzon. Asked if private hospitals see the need to provide additional Covid-19 beds, he noted that it is “not needed.” “Right now, it is still very manageable. We haven’t received any reports from any of our hospitals that their Covid-19 beds are fully occupied,” he said. On Saturday, the Health department recorded a total of 2,080 new Covid-19 cases, raising the country’s total caseload to 4,125,716. Economic recovery takes ‘one step back’
The Philippine economic recovery is taking a step back to curb the surging coronavirus outbreak and fix the fragile health system waging a “losing battle” against the pandemic. Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III said yesterday that the return of Metro Manila and nearly provinces to a stricter lockdown may take a toll on the drivers of economic rebound in the near-term. But Dominguez said that if the reimposed stricter modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) is correctly implemented, it will have a favorable impact on the nation’s long-term economic prospects. “In the short run, the return to MECQ may negatively affect livelihoods, consumer demand and production. However, if the time is used to boost all our medical resources and prevent further spread of the virus, then the MECQ will be positive for the long haul,” Dominguez said. As this is a new virus, Dominguez explained that nations, including the Philippines, continuously learn to adapt to the challenges posed by the new and uncertain environment induced by coronavirus. “The whole world is learning how to dance with this virus: two steps forward and one step back,” Dominguez said.Earlier, the DOF chief pushed for a shift of Metro Manila and Calabarzon—accounting for about 70 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP)—“as quickly as possible” to the most lenient quarantine status to kickstart the economy. However, President Duterte ordered Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal back under the MECQ from August 4 to 18 following a surge of COVID-19 cases and the appeal of healthcare workers. The two week shift to MECQ for Metro Manila and its adjacent provinces starting today ceased some businesses and public transport, while work and quarantine passes are also reinforced to restrict non-essential movements. Reverting to MECQ is an unwelcome develop for the economic managers as it could derail hopes for a recovery in the third quarter of the year. Acting Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick T. Chua earlier said the economic impact of the quarantine measures in country was “more severe than expected.” Days before Metro Maila reverted to MECQ, Dominguez said the local economy had already hit bottom and started to recover from the coronavirus-induced crisis, noting business activities have begun to pick up. The government had gradually eased the tough virus lockdown measures after the economy shrank by 0.2 percent in the first quarter......»»
