Unemployed, underemployed Filipinos down in August — PSA
Employers in the Philippines hired more Filipinos while fewer people looked for additional working hours, data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed on Friday. In a press briefing, the PSA said the number of jobless Filipinos reached 2.21 million in August, a decline from 2.27 million unemployed Filipinos last July. The data translated to an unemployment rate of 4.4 percent in August from 4.8 percent last July. PSA added that 5.63 million Filipinos were looking for more hours to increase their income in August, lower than the 7.10 million underemployed persons in July. The underemployment rate fell from 14.7 percent in August 2022 and 15.9 percent in July to 11.7 percent. Underemployed individuals are those who have indicated a wish for more work hours in their current job, a desire to take on a second job, or an interest in finding a new job that offers longer working hours. The rise in the number of people with and without jobs can be attributed to the month-on-month increase in labor force participation. In July, the labor force participation rate increased from 46.90 million to 64.7 percent, up from 60.1 percent in the previous month. "Many people entered the labor force, so unemployment decreased," National Statistician Dennis Claire Mapa said in a press briefing. PSA data mentioned that the majority of employed individuals, 62.6 percent, are wage and salary workers. On the other hand, self-employed individuals make up 27.3 percent, and unpaid family workers constitute 8.0 percent of the employed population. The state-run statistics bureau attributed the surge in employment to specific sectors: fishing and aquaculture with 572,000 new jobs, construction with 534,000, agriculture and forestry with 378,000, human health and social work activities with 153,000, and administrative and support service activities with 143,000. In a separate statement, NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said the government will continue to ramp up efforts to boost economic growth and quality job creation amid economic headwinds. "To raise the quality of employment further, the Marcos administration is committed to exerting all efforts to shape an attractive business climate for investors with the resources needed to bring in high-quality and high-paying jobs," Balisacan said. Heart Evangelista is Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia fashion issue cover girl
Style icon Heart Evangelista is this month’s cover girl of the international fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar (Indonesian edition), a sign that the actress has fully penetrated Southeast Asia to become its fashion darling. On the global scale, her base of followers continues to expand due to her exposures in major international fashion events, such as the Milan Fashion Show, the New York Fashion Show and the Paris Fashion Show. “Say hello to our October 2023 digital cover star, fashion darling @iamhearte in @tiffanyandco jewelry,” Bazaar said in a statement on its Instagram account where it bannered the social media influencer actress in various fashion poses. “In the wake of her first visit to Indonesia, Filipina-born actress Love Marie Payawal Ongpauco-Escudero made time for a photo shoot with BAZAAR while sharing her life experiences and love of fashion,” it added. The Bazaar article is written in Bahasa Indonesia titled “The Heart of the Matter.” The photoshoot-cum-interview was conducted at the same time as Heart’s first visit to Jakarta in August this year for an event of Tiffany’s & Co. where she is one of its leading global brand ambassadors. It will be recalled that Heart was also the cover girl for the August issue of Singapore’s fashion magazine ICON — of which she was dubbed as the “Fashion Queen.” “Fashion queen Heart Evangelista, who stands at the top of the pyramid, is not afraid of new challenges, and her secret to winning is simple: be kind and be yourself,” declares ICON in its article. Meanwhile, in her latest Instagram post, Heart posted various fashion shows she attended and her collaboration with iconic designers, such as Dior, YSL, Roberto Cavalli, Fausto Puglisi, Tod’s, Balmain, Bally, Versace and many others. The Best-Dressed Support the Best Cause
The pink carpet was finally rolled out for the Philippine Cancer Society’s annual Best Dressed Women of the Philippines Awards Ball! We recently celebrated a milestone year for the event at 20 years. Or those are two decades of making a difference in the lives of so many of our kababayans! The impact of this event continues to grow every year, that’s why we continue to give it our full support. Take it from me — an Ambassador for Life for over a decade! So it’s no surprise the Grand Ballroom at Shangri-La The Fort was packed. Hundreds of exquisitely dressed ladies and gentlemen showed up to help the Philippine Cancer Society surpass its goals yet again. I could feel the good vibes in the air with everyone buzzing and happy to be there. It was the perfect atmosphere for the night. Happily, because the event was a resounding success. Again, congratulations to the people committed to this cause, from Tita Helen Ong and the organizing team, to this year’s awardees. And of course, everyone who attended and gave their full support. Cheers, everyone! See you all again next year. Focusing on the beauty of daily life
The paintings on display at the ongoing exhibit at ARTablado in Robinsons Galleria are by an artist with a strong faith in a higher power. In fact, when asked who her favorite artist is, Marie Claire Olondriz chose God. “He’s the ultimate artist who created everything… matter, space, time, the entire universe.” In the years that she has spent honing her painting style, she has come up with canvases awash in color and light. Some of them are of Marian images like Our Lady of Aranzazu and Our Lady Star of the Sea but there are also her floral paintings including a beautiful one of a magnolia flower in full bloom. Another theme is the Madonna and Child although the artist opts to leave their faces blank, inscrutable. When she was younger, she would grab a sketch pad and her pencils and draw whatever caught her eye — sketching and coloring based on how she felt. [caption id="attachment_185923" align="aligncenter" width="525"] 'Floracion.'[/caption] Marie Claire came up with her style of painting when she was confined in the hospital. She started out scribbling in her sketch pad which led to continuous circles that initially seemed directionless. “Later, I expanded this to my paintings, using contrasting colors against the backdrop to create a textured look. What I enjoy is the sense of playfulness these scribbles bring to my art,” she said. “Amidst the sea of realist styles in my art group, mine feels unique. That’s why I began calling it ‘olondrizism,’ after my own name. It reflects my heart and soul when doing art.” When the time came to pick a title for her ARTablado exhibit, she chose Obra ni Maria Clara. Coming up with new paintings for the exhibit, however, took a while as she struggled with tennis elbow as well as carpal tunnel syndrome, the latter afflicting both hands. “On top of that, fibromyalgia would give me pain every single day,” she recounted. [caption id="attachment_185922" align="aligncenter" width="525"] 'Amor Y Cuidado.'[/caption] She took a break for a while and entertained thoughts she might not be able to meet the deadline. “Instead of having an operation, I tried therapy and kept trusting in God, believing He’d bless this exhibit somehow. I couldn’t let the doctors operate on my hands [because] that would mean no painting for over a month, or maybe even no more painting at all.” The exhibit that runs until 15 September will highlight Marie Claire’s take on “the beauty of everyday life, of common things we seldom appreciate.” The artist is grateful to Roseann Villegas, corporate public relations director of Robinsons Land Corporation for approaching her after spotting a painting Marie Claire had made for a group show. Established in 2020, Robinsons Land ARTablado, a portmanteau of “art” and “entablado” is Robinsons Land’s very own stage in showcasing the Filipino ingenuity and creativity.
