PAGCOR changing for better, says solons
A sea change in the gaming industry is coming as the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation. or PAGCOR, transitions into a “purely regulatory” body. Senator Win Gatchalian said PAGCOR’s move will effectively prevent a “conflict of interest” within the agency’s dual functions as a regulator and operator. “Its decision to transition to becoming a purely regulatory body is commendable, representing a significant stride towards improving the governance of the gaming industry,” Gatchalian, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ways and Mens, told reporters. Senator Grace Poe cited the PAGCOR’s move as a “step in the right direction” as it cannot “wear two hats at a time” at the same time. “It gives the agency a conflicting role that has raised misgivings about its capability to effectively regulate the gaming industry,” she said. Poe stressed the need to regulate the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators and other unauthorized gambling operations, which have brought social ills to the country and deprived the government of earnings. Benefits of improved regulation “If PAGCOR can effectively regulate the gaming industry and weed out unscrupulous activities, then it could even generate better revenues to help fund more government projects,” she added. PAGCOR chairman and chief executive officer, Alejandro Tengco, said the move is part of the agency’s goal to “level the playing field and ensure future growth and viability for all gaming industry players.” “We have started preparing for this transition in earnest, and we are starting where it matters most — within PAGCOR itself,” he said in his remarks during the opening of the IAG Academy Summit at the Hilton Manila last 13 September. Tengco said the transitioning process is expected to be completed by 2025. Gatchalian said he believes that the separation of PAGCOR’s regulatory and commercial functions “will not only attract more private sector investments but also elevate the country’s stature as a premier gaming destination in the region.” “Consequently, this is poised to significantly boost government revenues derived from the gaming industry,” he added. Gatchalian wants PAGCOR to impose stiffer penalties against illegalities perpetrated by the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators in the country. European body out to make seas safer
The European Union expressed interest in working more closely with the Philippines in making the seas safer, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday. Von der Leyen met yesterday in Malacañang with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for bilateral talks, where she underscored that the world’s geopolitical landscape is changing and becoming more dangerous. “We are ready to strengthen cooperation with the Philippines on maritime security in the region by sharing information, conducting threat assessments, and building the capacity of your coast guard,” Von der Leyen said in a joint statement with Marcos. She also discussed the EU’s position on the court decision that threw out China’s claims in the South China Sea. “The European Union underlines that the 2016 award of the arbitral tribunal on the South China Sea is legally binding and that it provides the basis for peacefully resolving disputes between the parties,” Von der Leyen said. “We are ready to strengthen cooperation with the Philippines on maritime security in the region by sharing information, conducting threat assessments, and building the capacity of your National Coast Watch System and your Coast Guard,” she added. Von der Leyen said the EU and the Philippines share a common interest in a free and open Indo-Pacific, and the EU is committed to upholding the rules-based international order. She stressed that the EU is concerned about the rising tensions in the region and that it is ready to work with the Philippines to address these challenges. Von der Leyen then called for closer security cooperation between the European Union and the Philippines in the Indo-Pacific region. She pointed out the EU has been working for a free and open Indo-Pacific because “an Indo-Pacific free from threats of coercion is key to all of our stability, peace and the prosperity of our people.” She said the global geopolitical landscape is changing and that authoritarian leaders are showing that they are willing to act on their threats. She cited Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine as an example of this. “Security in Europe and security in the Indo-Pacific are indivisible,” she said. “Challenges to the rules-based order in our interconnected world affect all of us.” Marcos and Von der Leyen also discussed ways to promote economic cooperation and investments in the Indo-Pacific region. “We have a broad roadmap to bring our partnership to the next level,” Von der Leyen said. “Let’s use the great momentum we have in our relationship.” The post European body out to make seas safer appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
When a growing chest isn’t muscle
Many men do exercises and lift weights to increase the strength and definition of their chest muscles. Enlargement in the area, however, can also be due to enlargement of the breast tissue, a condition called gynecomastia. Most men do not report any symptoms, but sometimes the enlargement can be accompanied by tenderness in the area and sensitivity when rubbing against clothing. [caption id="attachment_160533" align="aligncenter" width="619"] CONSULT your physician to get correct diagnosis.| Photograph courtesy of unsplash/alora griffith[/caption] Most breast lumps in men are usually benign enlargements. This can happen in just one or both breasts, and examination by a physician usually reveals a rubbery, movable lump can be felt just under the nipple area, measuring at least 0.5 cm up to 2.0 cm in diameter. If this lump is not felt on examination, the breast may be made up of mostly fatty tissue (also called pseudogynecomastia or lipomastia, which is due to an increase in breast fat and not breast glandular tissue). If physical examination cannot clearly identify between gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia, then a breast ultrasound or mammography should be done. While breast cancer occurs primarily in women, it can also occur in men. Male breast cancer makes up less than one percent of all cases of breast cancer, and is usually detected in men between 60 and 70 years of age. Male breast cancers are one-sided, non-tender, firm-to-hard in texture and not movable under the skin. These are also often found off to the side and not under the nipple. There can also be some dimpling in the skin like an orange peel. Certain hormones produce the usual traits seen in males (testosterone) and females (estrogen), but males also produce a small amount of estrogen while females produce a small amount of testosterone. Gynecomastia can occur when men have estrogen levels that are high or out of balance with testosterone levels. Gynecomastia can occur due to natural hormone changes at different times in a male’s life: Infancy. More than half of newborn boys have enlarged breasts because of the estrogen they received from their mothers while developing in the womb. The gynecomastia goes away at two to three weeks after birth. Puberty. Changing hormone levels can cause breast enlargement, but this usually goes away six months to two years after the start of puberty (usually from 12-14 years old). Mid-life and beyond. Men produce less testosterone as they get older. Older men also tend to have more body fat, causing an increase in estrogen. About one in four men between the ages of 50 and 80 have breast enlargement and usually have no symptoms. Men should see a doctor if you have: Breast tissue that is growing very fast A lump bigger than two to three inches under the nipple or a very hard lump that is off to the side of the nipple Pain and tenderness Nipple discharge in one or both breasts A lump on one of your testicles There are some other medical conditions can cause gynecomastia: Obesity Lack of proper nutrition Tumors in the testicles or adrenal glands Liver disease Thyroid disease Lack of testosterone Kidney failure Certain drugs and substances can also cause gynecomastia, including: Steroids Estrogens Treatments for an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer Diuretics (spironolactone) Medications used for heartburn (metoclopramide) Anti-fungal medications Herbal treatments that contain tea tree oil and lavender Excessive alcohol intake Prohibited substances such as amphetamines and marijuana In most cases of gynecomastia, treatment is often not needed. If there is an underlying condition, gynecomastia often goes away after treatment or once any offending medications are stopped. A medication called tamoxifen or anastrazole can also be used for a short while. If the breast enlargement persists despite these, surgery to reduce the size of the breasts can be done. If you suspect you have gynecomastia, consult your physician to get the correct diagnosis and to find the right treatment. The risk for gynecomastia may also be reduced by not using drugs that include anabolic steroids, amphetamines and marijuana, and by avoiding alcohol or drinking in moderation. EU moves closer to launching digital euro
The European Union (EU) on Wednesday took its first significant step towards launching a digital version of the euro, a controversial project that has been questioned by politicians and banks. From China to the United States, Jamaica to Japan, more than 100 central banks worldwide are exploring or preparing to put in place digital currencies as electronic payments grow, changing the way people spend their money. The move to create a digital version of the single currency began in 2020 when European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde suggested the idea and her Frankfurt-based body launched a public consultation. The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, published a proposal on Wednesday that will be the legal foundation on which the ECB could launch a digital euro. The currency would be available to individuals living in the euro area and for visitors. It would offer an additional payment option for citizens to use online and offline with their digital wallets, thus ensuring as much anonymity as coins and banknotes. The final law must be backed by the EU's 27 member states and the European Parliament. Digital euro enthusiasts say it will complement cash and ensure the ECB does not leave a gap later filled by private -- usually non-EU -- players and other central banks. "Given that the euro is already the world's second most-traded currency, it is not an area where can afford to stay behind the curve. We need to move ahead with a digital currency," commission vice president Valdis Dombrovskis told reporters. Critics question the need for a digital euro and banks warn of major risks, while the ECB's own study found the public was concerned over payment privacy. The ECB and the commission "have yet to make a compelling case of why we need the digital euro and what added value it will deliver," German MEP Markus Ferber said. Benefits 'outweigh' costs The commission's proposal argued that the digital euro's "long-term benefits... outweigh its costs" and warned, "the costs of no action can potentially be very large". Lagarde said in March that the digital currency was important for resilience and to "safeguard European payment autonomy". Many means of payment are "not necessarily European", she noted, adding it was "very unhealthy to rely on one single source of payment". US giants Visa and Mastercard currently dominate the global card payment market. Others argue, however, that the bloc's plans spell trouble unless the EU takes necessary other steps. Banks have warned of the risk of bank runs as customers could hold their funds in digital euro accounts and wallets, moving them away from the banks' balance sheets. "To shield banks from the risk of deposit flight and to limit the negative impact on banks' ability to finance the economy, it is important to set appropriate and firm limits in holdings and transactions," the European Banking Federation said on Wednesday. The proposal indicates there will be a limit to how much money people can keep in digital euros. ECB officials have suggested a cap of 3,000 euros ($3,300). The digital currency will be granted "legal tender" status, meaning it must be accepted as payment. But there would be exceptions, including for small businesses that do not accept any form of digital payment. The ECB is set to give the formal green light to a digital euro in October and the expectation is it would be available from 2027 onwards. The ECB welcomed the commission's proposal, which it said offered "private intermediaries appropriate economic incentives to distribute the digital euro as they do other digital means of payment while preventing excessive fees for merchants". Privacy concerns The ECB has a difficult battle to win over Europeans. A public consultation showed that the number one priority when it comes to the digital euro is privacy. To calm people's fears, the ECB has stressed it would not attempt to control how people can spend digital currency or use it for surveillance, as critics claim is the case in China. "This is not a Big Brother project for online payments," the EU's financial services commissioner, Mairead McGuinness, said during a press conference in Brussels. "With the digital euro, the data privacy will be the same as for existing private digital means of payment. For offline payments, the data privacy will be even higher." The commission's proposal said the digital euro "will be designed so as to minimize the processing of personal data by payment services providers" and the ECB. Miracles of a medal from Paris
There’s a small chapel in the center of Paris which I visit without fail every time I find myself back in the city. The trip happens, no matter if it’s for crucial work or a laid-back holiday, regardless of the changing seasons and the length of stay. It is but imperative I drop by as a thanksgiving pilgrimage for safely bringing me back to one of my favorite destinations. [caption id="attachment_148667" align="aligncenter" width="525"] A facade detail of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal | Photo by Guilhem Vellut (CC BY 2.0)[/caption] Situated in the historical less-than-a-kilometer-long street named Rue du Bac, it seems to have an enigmatic yet magnetic force that pulls me to a right turn to face the welcoming arch, where I once again lay my eyes on the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. With the famed address of #140, it used to be a part of the Hotel de Châtillon, the once-upon-a-time home of French nobility and aristocracy. [caption id="attachment_148666" align="aligncenter" width="800"] The Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal | Photo by Ketounette (CC BY-SA 4.0)[/caption] Formally called The Chapel of Graces of the Miraculous Virgin, it was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and served as the Motherhouse of the Order of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. Colored with a storied past, the most popular association with the house of prayer is Catherine Labouré, a simple farmer’s daughter. She was just nine years old when her mother passed on. It is said that she, whenever she passed by a favorite statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, kissed it while uttering the words, “Now you will be my mother.” [caption id="attachment_148660" align="aligncenter" width="287"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF Public Domain | SAINT Catherine Labouré.[/caption] At age 24, the then-novice of the order, Labouré received three visits from Mary the Mother of God. The last apparition was revealed on 27 November 1830. During her evening meditation, Mary with a ray of light in her hands appeared inside an oval frame, standing upon a globe, with the words, “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” As the image rotated, a depiction of 12 stars, a large letter M surmounted by a cross, and the stylized Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary underneath likewise manifested. Our Lady then requested the dear Sister to “Get a medal struck after this model. Those who wear it when it is blessed will receive great graces, especially if they wear it about the neck. Graces will be abundant for those who have confidence.” [caption id="attachment_148668" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] The incorrupt body of Saint Catherine Labouré[/caption] Adrien-Jean-Maximilien Vachette, an official jeweler of Louis XVIII’s court, was tasked with this monumental task. He began with a modest batch of 2,000 medals. [caption id="attachment_148658" align="aligncenter" width="525"] The Miraculous Medal | Photo by Xhienne (CC BY-SA 3.0)[/caption] The Daughters of Charity started to don these more-than-just-a-talisman and handed them out to the elderly and sick. In quick succession, miraculous cures and healings swept the community. This caused a clamor for this coveted object not only in France, but throughout the world. Not long after, it has been dubbed as the Miraculous Medal. Upon hearing these stories, the Archbishop of Paris requested for the first-print run, while Pope Gregory XVI notably placed one on his desk crucifix. During the World War II, 10 million civilians and military members signed up to be a part of Mary’s Kneeling Army of Prayer, who all wore the medal as they prayed for peace and protection of America’s defenders. Those who returned from war have credited their well-being through this act of grace. Here are five details you should appreciate during you visit to the hallowed ground: Reimagine Visions: Altar’s Fresco Situated on an arc just above the main altar, the painting shows the Virgin Mary sitting on a chair, talking to the young Labouré herself, as both are surrounded by angels in a starry evening backdrop. Miracle Bringer: Mary’s Chair The postulant Sister witnessed the Mother of God in her regal flowing robes on a chapel seat. This red-lined chaplain chair remains in the church, where it has become instrumental for several miracles. Whisper Prayers: Gilded Altar The grand altar stands at a cove, with a huge statue of the Mother of Mankind with a gleaming crown of lights that reflects the rays of the sun, reminiscent of her radiant apparitions in the past. Above is another sculpture of the Virgin atop some clouds while holding a globe. Religious Pilgrimage: Marillac and de Paul The bones of Saint Louise de Marillac are contained in a wax effigy, while a reliquary carries the heart of Saint Vincent de Paul. They both co-founded the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. In life we get what we give
Six months ago, I ran a workshop for 50 women managers of a local government unit in Southern Luzon. In this time of disruption, the four mayors of the region decided to invite so that these female managers would be able to cope with the massive changes brought about by the pandemic not only in their jobs but also in work and family life. I studied the profiles of the women and decided to focus my topic on how to survive today’s disruption with the right mindset. As our lives have profoundly changed with the impact of the pandemic and massive changes in our societal norms, I needed to empower these women to focus on the most essential aspects of change. The workshop I conducted was life-changing for the women as we tackled their problems and issues. I listened to their stories intently as I observed their body language and eye movements. One of the narratives that impressed me was that of an HR manager who had to deal with the employees with problems ranging from economic, hard-headed children and husbands who were philanderers. I marveled at how she was able to advise these women to change their defeatist attitude into that of a fearless, winning person. I therefore worked individually with the women with serious problems of isolation, anger management, depression and lack of drive. On the second day, I gave them guidelines on how to navigate their daily lives. The importance of a grateful heart. When we are grateful, abundance follows. Create a network of like-minded people who are able to work together to uplift, engage, mentor, share in each other’s joys, triumphs, problems with love, compassion, care, concern and advice. The workshop proved to be a huge success as the women returned to their workplace and families with positive mindsets, fearless and confident attitudes, and most importantly the CAN-DO belief that nothing was impossible to achieve for as long as they had faith in themselves and their Creator. Miss Conception
Just a few days ago, our country’s pageant mill minted a new “beauty queen” in the person of one Angelica Lopez of Palawan as Binibining Pilipinas International. And a few weeks before that, a certain Yllana Marie Aduana was crowned Miss Earth Philippines 2023. Like others before them who had won the Miss Universe Philippines, Miss World Philippines and, of course, the local Miss Earth competitions, they will compete, and hope to win in the international equivalents of their competition as representatives of our country. Our country takes pride in winning a total of fifteen crowns in the so-called “Big Four” of international beauty pageants: Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International and Miss Earth. There are, to be sure, “lesser” contests: Miss Supranational, Miss Grand International, Miss Intercontinental, the list goes on and on. And our women have won in many of them. Truly, we are one pageant-crazy nation, as witnessed by how life seems to be put on hold whenever one of the major ones air in the country. Beauty contests have also been considered traditional springboards to fame and fortune. We have many A-list actresses who started out as beauty queens. Two of the most prominent of these would be Gloria Diaz — “Ang Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa” — and Pilar Pilapil. Others like Pia Wurtzbach and Kylie Versoza also tried their luck, but their showbiz careers did not gain as much traction as the first two parts because, in the case of Ms. Wurtzbach, she was a bad actress. While it seems that beauty pageants are here to stay, many (this author included) have serious doubts about their continued utility in this day and age of changing societal roles. One main criticism against traditional pageants is that they promote a measure of “beauty” that is too high: One must be tall, slender, with perfect body proportions, and a style of comporting oneself on stage that takes years to master. Thus, this gives rise to a culture of sorts that makes ordinary mortals try to achieve the same level of pulchritude, only to fall short, as the vast majority of women are not as endowed as the standard pageant candidate. This state of affairs, many say, leads to a distorted sense of worth that strongly implies that one is less of a woman when one does not fit into the mold of a beauty queen. Another critique is that pageants objectify women, in the sense that they are treated as mere “things” that must comply with certain specifications; hence, they must look good in an evening gown and swimwear, know how to sing and dance for the obligatory production, and be able to answer asinine questions that are hardly a source of edification. The way by which they are paraded before a live and remote audience like cattle, some would add, is essentially demeaning to the contestants, making them look like “pieces of meat,” like in a cattle auction. Now, don’t get me wrong; I love looking at lovely women. In fact, my Twitter profile states, in part, that I am “a lover of beauty” and my personal motto is that “women are the foundation of society, so men must lay the foundation.” Nonetheless, I am a progressive, and I personally think that pageants, on the whole, serve no other purpose in this day and age but to enrich their organizers, promote products and personalities (especially couturiers), and provide she is the sum total of all her wit and wisdom, her learning and experience, her personality and charisma. Happy hunting grounds for dirty old men (don’t look at me, I bathe three times a day). Levity aside, if doing away with these pageants is too extreme a measure, we should at least stop sending the message that a woman’s worth is limited to how tall of stature, curvaceous of figure and lovely of face she is. Indeed, a woman is more than that: To say or think otherwise would be a serious misconception. The post Miss Conception appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Wellness center celebrates a decade of healing
A certain demographic of women who need support, healing, self-improvement or with fitness goals is drawn to ONELIFE, a center for Pilates and physical therapy. This year, ONELIFE has turned 10 years old, and to celebrate, the studio’s clientele made up of mostly women gathered together last 23 May at the studio’s Estancia Mall branch to look back at how their journey began. “Ten years ago, we started something small. We wanted a place for people to come and work on themselves without feeling intimidated, without feeling judged, without feeling insecure,” said an emotional Tanya Maria Aguila, founder of ONELIFE, during her speech at the company’s 10th-anniversary party. [caption id="attachment_137170" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Tanya Maria Aguila, founder of ONELIFE.[/caption] The party was packed with women in athleisure chic attire, sporting ONELIFE’s colors of blue, ecru, white and grey. It’s a community of glowing women, whose lives have changed and have become one in their sustainable goal: To feel good, become better and healthier—and support fellow women to achieve the same. ONELIFE is clearly driven by the need to help a Filipino woman with her unique needs. It understands that a woman’s body is ever-changing, coupled with various experiences, such as the transition to motherhood, aging and juggling parenthood and career, and how these factors affect her body. Not to mention how women look at other women on social media. “As a woman, it’s so difficult to really—with social media nowadays, right? It’s so difficult to keep up. And so we really wanted this place to become an even safer place for women,” mused Tanya. Tanya described how ONELIFE through the years has shaped into a place for a variety of programs or “care tracks”—be it weight loss, strengthening, toning, posture correction or general fitness. According to Tanya, they have the best licensed physical therapists in the country and internationally trained fitness coaches and consultants. ONELIFE also introduced a care track that focuses on pregnant women, which Tanya says is the first in the country. With studios scattered in major cities in the Metro — San Juan, Pasig and Makati — Tanya even plans to expand ONELIFE to reach and support more women. “What we want to do, really, is to expand here more and abroad. We really want to be a Filipino company that expands abroad. So we are hoping to expand where our physical therapists go to: Australia, the US, Canada and hopefully, later on, Asia,” she shared. If a woman has a physical injury or condition, ONELIFE designs a program to address these needs. “What we do here is actually very bespoke,” added Tanya. “It’s personalized every single time. So in terms of program, we really customize it each time. What people can expect is that when they come here, it’s always like a new program for them, depending on what they need at the moment.” “When you have a special condition, we ask for your doctor’s diagnosis and recommendation, and our PTs read that and they execute the program with a bit of a customized program for us as well,” she said. ONELIFE’s community of its women clientele, who had forged friendships over the years, advocate women empowerment and support. Tanya, the women’s leader and friend, on her company’s 10th year, still carries that fervent passion in her crusade for women’s well-being and betterment. “…We realized, to serve the people best, people like us who have special needs, who have special — you know, who need a little bit of support — we needed to specialize more and more. So we’re here. ONELIFE has evolved into a place that’s really for women. I dare say that we know women best,” Tanya concluded. Based on the results of your blood test, you will be given the option to undergo hormone replacement such as HRT (hormone replacement therapy) or BHRT (bioidentical hormone replacement therapy/plant-based) Q: What is the easiest way to achieve good complexion at any age? A: Great skin is founded on good health. You have everything to gain from eating right and following the basic tenets of wellness which bear repeating. Whole foods and produce, especially leafy greens Vegetable juicing daily [caption id="attachment_134190" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/maddi bazzocco | DRINK vegetable juice for glowing skin.[/caption] Good sleep Hydration [caption id="attachment_134191" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of pexels/arnie Watkins | KEEP your body hydrated.[/caption] Exercise Stress Management No junk food Vitamin/mineral supplementation Q: How can I have a smaller waistline? A: Eat less carbohydrates. Limit your sugar intake. Eat more veggies. Eat less animal meat (especially beef and pork). Cut down on fast-food. Choose water over carbonated drinks. Exercise. Burn those calories. Have your meals at regular hours. Erratic eating habits can cause weight gain. Do not go on a starvation diet. It can lead to future health problems. Q: I crave different kinds of food at different times. For example, one day it’s peanuts; the next day, it’s ice cream. Why is that? A: Cravings they say is an indication that your body “needs” a certain vitamin or mineral. This is partly true. But did you know that cravings can be emotionally triggered? Your state of mind plays a very important part in all of this. So does your diet and emotional state. There is a need for some self-observation and examination. It’s okay to give in to a craving but don’t go overboard. Remember, moderation is key. This topic deserves more discussion, so we will go back to this more extensively in the near future. The important thing to remember is that having a craving is not such a bad thing. You may give in to it in moderation. Q: I am too lazy to exercise but I know it is necessary. Any suggestions on how to begin? A: Thank you for your honesty. Yes, admittedly we all fall into that lazy phase. That’s okay. But don’t let it become a habit. The best way to get started is to have an exercise buddy. This will give you the motivation to stick to it. Start small. Perhaps you can join a walking group. Walking is one of the most effective forms of exercise. And it is the cheapest. Walk 30 to 45 minutes each day. Joining a gym is lots of fun. The group energy of your class can be contagious. Besides, this gives you the opportunity to make new friends and expand your circle. Be with like-minded individuals. Obviously, you cannot seriously focus on your health goals if you are constantly with the party crowd. Affirmation: “Success is my middle name.” Love and light. Kris Bernal embraces her new journey as a mom
Actress Kris Bernal’s pregnancy was on full display as she rocked a yellow bikini by the pool in a recent Instagram post. There she wrote about how she’s taking her new journey as a mother head-on. “Embracing my new and growing body. It’s there to host our baby and to keep it healthy and that’s it! Starting to feel her little kicks! She’s a kicking machine! Nonetheless, I smile so big!” she said. “The first trimester was rough! I wanted to do everything I could to be healthy as possible, but everything smelled and tasted disgusting!” the actress added. After recently making a gender reveal, Bernal has been counting her blessings including having her husband Perry Choi by her side all the time. “He (Choi) put up with all my crazy mood swings, reminds me of the do’s and don’ts of my doctor, makes sure I take my medicines on time, and the list goes on!” she said in a previous post. “Perry, you have what it takes to welcome parenthood! You’ll def nail this whole dad thing." The post Kris Bernal embraces her new journey as a mom appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Chatbot, am not
Two little mounds of flesh, So soft, so round, so fair, Upon a chest of snow, Two little buds of air. Two little peaks of joy, So sensitive, so sweet, That when touched, They stand erect, entice. Two little points of love, So full of life, so warm, That when they’re kissed They give thrills of joy. Two little cups of milk, So sweet, so pure, so white, That filled they give A nourishment so bright. Two little symbols of The love that God has given, To womankind to show Motherhood’s joys — Bard, waxing poetic on women’s bosoms ChatGPT, while still in continuous development since its release in November 2022, has taken the world by storm because its use of artificial intelligence, or AI, has allowed it to hold open-ended conversations with humans in written form. But rave about ChatGPT we’d rather not because OpenAI’s creation is just a more advanced and sophisticated variant of what personal assistants like Alexa, Siri, or Hey Google have been doing for many years now through smart devices, albeit only verbally or graphically. ChatGPT, I’d dare say, is more evolutionary than revolutionary. Suffice it to say, though, that we can see sooner than later chatbots and personal assistants crossing over into each other’s digital realms to cover all platforms whether written verbal, photos, videos, or robotics. Their very human creators (greed is exclusive to man, right?) would all do that because convergence holds the key to making money from disruptive or game-changing concepts like AI. Mind you, AI can be made to do a lot more things other than Google’s Bard being told to generate (did I say write?) that paean of a poem above on women’s nurturing nature. AI, as you read this, is already powering self-driving cars, smart cities, customer service, and revolutionizing education through customized tutorials. But AI, as a branch of computer science, deserves a series of columns. So enough of this digression and let’s go back to the specifics of those AI-powered chatbots, with me wearing my Daily Tribune technology editor’s hat. Am no expert here, but who can claim to be one when even Google’s top executives admitted in an interview with 60 Minutes that they could not put a finger on how Bard, their answer to ChatGPT, works? You know, just like opening Pandora’s or Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates: Either you get all of the evils of the world pouring out because of AI, or life’s gooey, mouth-watering goodness, or both. Who knows what the future holds? Going back to ChatGPT, which has gotten a headstart over Bard but may eventually cave in from the power of Google’s superlative search engine and wealth, there’s a certain depth of response that people get from it. Alexa or Siri could not hold a candle to ChatGPT in making some lazy people think they can use the AI chatbot instead of doing actual research or in passing themselves off as writers even at the risk of being exposed as plagiarists. One daughter told me that, in college, they have unmasked ChatGPT users among their peers, having analyzed the plagiarized works vis-a-vis what the chatbot does and its formula for responding to prompts. In most cases, ChatGPT throws in a structured response broken down into three parts: Introduction, body (where it does its data dumping, information overload), and conclusion, she told me. Likewise, perfection is a giveaway when somebody who could not even write a single grammatically passable sentence suddenly becomes Mark Twain-ish. As AI chatbots can get overly formulaic, it would not take rocket science to decipher a chatbot-generated piece of writing, notwithstanding Google’s attempt at selling Bard as one infused with black magic, a pathetic attempt at marketing hype.
