Sneaker Stories: Jordan s era-defining shoes for 'The Last Dance'

It’s gotta be the shoes. Sneakers are all the craze these days, everyone’s after them whether you’re an actual sneakerhead or just in it for the business of it. Since footwear is pretty big on basketball, some of the more coveted ones are basketball shoes after all, you know, made for actual performance, basketball folks are naturally the source of some heat. The Sneaker Stories series takes a minor twist today, focusing on the GOAT himself. With the release of The Last Dance, the 10-episode docuseries featuring Michael Jordan, now seems like the perfect time to take a look at the shoes that defined His Airness’ 1997-1998 season. [Related: Sneaker Stories: Around the world in Matthew Wright's boat shoes]   He Got Game The Air Jordan XIII was the flagship shoe worn by Michael for the 1997-1998 season, his last as a Chicago Bull and the focus of The Last Dance. Designed by the legendary Tinker Hatfield, the XIIIs were inspired by MJ’s other persona as The Black Cat, with the midsole supposed to mimic the paw of a panther. The heel jewel - the hologram - is for the cat’s eye that instills fear to those who make contact. [Related: Prepare for The Last Dance with these essential Michael Jordan pieces] A forgotten detail about the XIIIs is that the black Playoff colorway might as well be the shoe worn by Jordan for his last shot as a Bull. Up 3-1 in the 1998 Finals, the Bulls were down two to the Jazz at home for Game 5. Jordan tried to go for the title but his final three at the buzzer missed, sending the series back to Salt Lake City for Game 6.   Big Apple While Jordan Brand makes a ton of money with its retro business, Jordan himself rarely wore his older shoes back when he was playing. It was all about his latest flagship. One of the exceptions came in 1998, when Jordan wore a retro of the Air Jordan 1. The model originally first released in 1985, and MJ wore the retro of the Chicago colorway in New York at the Madison Square Garden, torching the Knicks for 42 points in a win Bulls win.   Last Shot The Air Jordan XIV was the last sneaker Jordan wore as a Bull, however, the shoe didn’t release for retail until the next NBA season. Still, Jordan debuted the shoe way early, wearing it three times during the 1998 NBA Finals against the Jazz. The black and red colorway was on the feet of His Airness when he stripped Karl Malone of the basketball late in Game 6 and Chicago trailing by one. Then, with his unreleased flagship, Jordan put the moves on Bryon Russell, elevated for his signature mid-range jumper, and handed the Bulls a sixth championship with one more iconic swish. The black and red 14s would be later aptly-named “Last Shot” and Jordan himself provided a timeless moment for the model. However, the same shoe wouldn’t hit retail until March of 1999. The 14s actually debuted with the Candy Cane colorway late in 1998. Also designed by Hatlfield, the 14s were inspired by Jordan’s Ferrari 550 Maranello.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8 .....»»

LeBron James has triple-double, Lakers beat Mavs in OT

By The Associated Press DALLAS (AP) — Anthony Davis started overtime with back-to-back dunks after Danny Green's buzzer-beating 3-pointer in regulation, and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Dallas Mavericks 119-110 on Friday night (Saturday, PHL time). LeBron James and young Dallas phenom Luka Doncic had matching triple-doubles, with the 10th of Doncic's career extending the 20-year-old's record for triple-doubles for players under 21. James is third on that list with five. James had a season-high 39 points with 16 assists and 12 rebounds. The 15-time All-Star converted a three-point play on a layup for a 110-103 lead in overtime. They went 12 for 48 from 3-point range, with Harden a dismal 2 for 16. Harden finished with 36 points and eight assists, but he was 10 for 31 from the field. Russell Westbrook added 27 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Neither Harden nor Kyrie Irving was at his best in a matchup of the NBA's two leading scorers. Harden came in leading the league with 36.8 points per game and scored 59 in the Washington outburst. Irving came in at 35.3 per game, He finished with 22 points on 7-for-18 shooting with 10 assists. Caris LeVert scored 25 points for Brooklyn. KINGS 102, JAZZ 101 SACRAMENTO, Calif. Donovan Mitchell's desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer grazed the front of the rim. De'Aaron Fox scored 25 points, Buddy Hield had 18 and Bogdan Bogdanovic added 14 to help the Kings (1-5) end their worst start in nearly 30 years. Sacramento entered the game as the only winless team in the NBA. Mitchell had 24 points for the Jazz (4-2). Rudy Gobert added 15 points and 16 rebounds, and Mike Conley scored 19. CELTICS 104, KNICKS 102 BOSTON (AP) — Jayson Tatum hit a turnaround jumper with 1.3 seconds remaining and Boston beat New York for its fourth straight victory. Tatum finished with 24 points. Kemba Walker scored 23 of his 33 points in the second half, and Gordon Hayward had 13 points and nine boards. Marcus Morris led the Knicks with 29 points, hitting a tying 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds left. Rookie RJ Barrett had 15 points and seven rebounds. BUCKS 123, MAGIC 91 ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo had 29 points and 14 rebounds and Milwaukee routed Orlando. Eric Bledsoe added 18 points, six rebounds and six assists for Milwaukee, and Khris Middleton added 16 points and six rebounds. The Bucks were coming off a 116-105 loss at Boston on Wednesday night (Thursday, PHL time). Evan Fournier led Orlando with 19 points. BULLS 112, PISTONS 106 CHICAGO (AP) — Zach LaVine scored 26 points, Otto Porter Jr. added 22 and Chicago overcame a big effort by Derrick Rose against his former team to beat Detroi. Rose delighted the hometown crowd with 23 points and seven assists. But the Bulls came away with the win after dropping three in a row while handing the Pistons their fourth loss in five games. LaVine put Chicago ahead for good with back-to-back 3-pointers and added four free throws in the final 11.5 seconds. Porter shot 8 of 12, nailing three 3s. Wendell Carter Jr. added 16 points and 11 rebounds. PACERS 102, CAVALIERS 95 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Malcolm Brogdon had 25 points, eight rebounds and six assists to help injury-depleted Indiana beat Cleveland for its first home victory of the season. Jeremy Lamb added 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Domantas Sabonis had 18 points and 17 rebounds. The Pacers have won two in a row after opening the season 0-3. Kevin Love led Cleveland with 22 points and 17 rebounds. SPURS 127, WARRIORS 110 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Patty Mills came off the bench to score 31 points and San Antonio beat Golden State, hours after the Warriors learned they will be without injured star Stephen Curry for at least three months. LaMarcus Aldridge added 22 points for the Spurs (4-1), who were coming off their first loss of the season a night earlier. D'Angelo Russell led Golden State (1-4) with 30 points. The game was an indication of the uphill battle facing Golden State without Curry, who underwent surgery after breaking his left hand Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time) against Phoenix. Russell couldn't carry the Warriors alone, even with three teammates in double figures. Rookie Jordan Poole scored 20......»»

Interim WBA champ Jamal James eyeing Manny Pacquiao

The list of names looking to challenge Filipino eight-division boxing world champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao seems to be getting longer, and the latest addition to that list is American welterweight Jamal James.  The 32-year old Minneapolis native owns an impressive 27-1 pro record with 12 of those wins coming via KO.  Last August 8th, James earned his first taste of world championship gold by defeating Thomas Dulorme by unanimous decision to become the interim WBA Welterweight World Champion.  Now, James is looking to drop the 'interim' tag by going after the big names, and right now, the biggest name with a WBA world title is none other than Pacquiao.  "Obviously, I would like to get a shot at Manny Pacquiao, he's got the WBA super title," James told BoxingScene.com.  The 41-year old Pinoy boxing icon captured the WBA (Regular) Welterweight World Championship back in 2018 and then defeated the previously-undefeated Keith Thurman to become the WBA (Super) Welterweight World Champion in 2019.  Right now however, it looks like Pacquiao is eyeing big name fights, and James isn't exactly at that level yet.  James himself understands this, but being the interim champion means he's next in line, so he'll take whoever he can get. "But I know he's such a big name, so it really doesn't matter. I want any of the big name welterweights, we can really put on a good show," James said.  Both James and Pacquiao fight under the Premier Boxing Champions promotion.  Over the last few months, Pacquiao has been discussed a lot by a number of big name welterweights including Terence Crawford, Errol Spence Jr., Mikey Garcia, Thurman, and even junior welterweight Josh Taylor. Most recently, he's been linked to a possible superfight with MMA star Conor McGregor.  For now however, it's unclear when Pacquiao makes his return to the ring, although a 2020 fight isn't out of the realm of possibility. .....»»

Sneaker Stories: Chris Ross love for kicks spans 30 years

It’s gotta be the shoes. Sneakers are all the craze these days, everyone’s after them whether you’re an actual sneakerhead or just in it for the business of it. Since footwear is pretty big on basketball, some of the more coveted ones are basketball shoes after all, you know, made for actual performance, basketball folks are naturally the source of some heat. In this series, this writer gets in on the Sneaker Stories of some of our favorite PBA personalities. San Miguel’s star guard Chris Ross talks about his picks next.   30-year journey Chris Ross is one of those PBA players that comes through with heat on his feet every time he plays a game for San Miguel Beer. At this point in his life, it would be actually weird for Ross to come keep his sneaker game in check. He’s been into kicks for pretty much all his life. “Ever since I can remember,” Ross told this writer when asked how he first fell in love with sneakers. “I have a brother that’s six years older than I am, my brother was a shoe guy like I am and my dad worked as hard as he could to kinda buy him the sneakers he wanted when he played basketball,” he added. Having a big brother who was into basketball and sneakers meant that Chris was exposed to both at a very young age. The fire was lit for Ross very early in his life and it’s been burning since. ”Since I’m six years behind, when I was playing basketball I just kinda filled in with him. Ever since I can remember, I think when I was 5-6 years old, I was always getting the best sneakers, the latest ones to come out,” Ross said. “It’s been almost a 30-year journey for me,” he added.   The Classics A quick look at the sneakers Ross chooses to wear during games and it will be easy to deduce that he likes his classics. The San Miguel star is one of the few players in the league that you can count on to actually hoop on Jordan retros. Ross’ personal picks also revolve around the best the Jumpman brand has to offer. “I’m a huge fan of the Jordan 3 Black Cement, I’m all about the originals. I like the Jordan 4, I also like the Jordan 13,” he said. “Jordan 11 Concord, I think it’s the best sneaker ever made. I think it changed the game with the black patent leather that was shiny that no one ever saw on a basketball shoe, it was more for suits and things like that. When Jordan came out with that, it kind changed the sneaker game,” Ross added. Aside from their iconic status, Ross likes his classic sneakers also for their versatility aspect. He likes his kicks to go with him wherever he goes. Taking your shoes everywhere is every sneakerhead’s dream for sure. “I like the Air Force 1s. The Air Force 1s just because you can style them with anything, you can go all white or you can add color, you can dress them up or dress them down,” Ross said. “I like shoes that are versatile, like the Jordan 11s, you can wear them on the court but you can also wear them with a suit,” he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8 .....»»

Prepare for The Last Dance with these essential Michael Jordan pieces

The highly-anticipated Michael Jordan documentary series, The Last Dance is finally here. Over two decades after his final game as a Chicago Bull, the GOAT is once again ready to take the world by storm, especially during this time of great uncertainty. Showing on ESPN and Netflix, The Last Dance details Jordan’s last season in Chicago over 10 episodes. In 1998, Jordan’s Bulls completed their second three-peat in eight years, once again beating the Utah Jazz in an NBA Finals Rematch. The season was capped by “The Shot” and Jordan cemented his place as basketball’s greatest. Tuning in to The Last Dance for 10 episodes will surely be a treat, however, it’s not the first definite look at Michael Jordan’s work as a Chicago Bull. Hopefully, it won’t be the last as well. Just before everyone makes a deep dive in His Airness’ latest documentary series, here are some essential viewing and reading to truly appreciate Michael Jordan’s last dance.   Take Flight Before The Last Dance, these were the documentaries that made up the essentials if you wanted to get close with Michael Jordan himself. Come Fly With Me (1989) and Michael Jordan’s Playground (1990) both last less than 45 minutes, but they offer a great perspective on the man himself before he started his championship runs with the Chicago Bulls. Arguably the two best Michael Jordan documentaries, Come Fly With Me detail’s the GOAT’s beginnings all the way to his MVP award in the 1988 All-Star Game. Michael Jordan’s Playground is pretty straightforward, telling Jordan’s story from the start – from the playground. Michael Jordan: Air Time, came out in 1993 and it follows the GOAT’s first two championships from the previous two seasons. The 1996 piece, Michael Jordan: Above and Beyond, is pretty much the sequel to Air Time and it follows his time away from basketball after the 1993 championship. After the first three-peat, MJ tried his luck in baseball. However, it was also the time when MJ dealt with the murder of his father, James. Jordan’s time in baseball didn’t last long though, as two words delivered via the most iconic press release of all time announced the GOAT’s return to the court. 1999’s Michael Jordan: His Airness features the 1998 Finals against the Jazz, making it closer to what The Last Dance has to offer. It should be a nice review piece for every Jordan fanatic.   The Specials Another video worth the watch is Michael Jordan’s Hall of Fame Speech in 2009. It’s much more than just the birth of the epic Cying MJ meme. Swear. Buzzfeed Unsolved also has an interesting Jordan piece, exploring the conspiracies of MJ’s first retirement after the 1993 title. It has been long rumored that Jordan’s first retirement was related to gambling. A more recent video is MJ himself appearing on Good Morning America to discuss The Last Dance. The rare interview is really the perfect preview for the upcoming docuseries.    Good Reads While waiting for new episodes of The Last Dance, catching up on some Michael Jordan books seems like a great idea as well. Sam Smith’s The Jordan Rules chronicles MJ’s first championship season in 1991, but it was definitely not all good propaganda towards Jordan as it showed a supposed different side to Michael. Arguably the most definitive book on the GOAT, Michael Jordan The Life by Roland Lazenby explores the man himself to the fullest. It is the story of Michael Jordan.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8 .....»»
