Indonesia’s three-way presidential race set as deadline nears
The candidates for next year's Indonesian presidential election were set Wednesday, with septuagenarian former special forces general Prabowo Subianto and his running mate, the president's son, seen as the frontrunners. Nearly 205 million eligible voters can cast their ballot on 14 February, with the winner set to succeed President Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, after he completes the maximum two terms ruling Southeast Asia's biggest economy. Three candidates -- defence minister Subianto, former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo and former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan -- confirmed their run for the presidency before Wednesday's midnight deadline. Subianto and Widodo's son Gibran Rakabuming Raka were joined by supporters and a marching band in their journey to the election commission on Wednesday, both dressed in baby blue shirts after attending a concert by tens of thousands at a central Jakarta arena. "We... ask for the blessing from all Indonesians. We are now facing a very important point in the history of Indonesia," said Subianto. "We are at a point where we can rise and become an Indonesia that is great... and an Indonesia where the natural resources are utilised optimally for all." The presence of Jokowi's son on the ticket has fuelled criticism that the president is trying to create a political dynasty in the world's third-largest democracy, an allegation he denies. Just before the registration deadline, the constitutional court -- led by Widodo's brother-in-law -- controversially ruled that candidates under 40 years old can run for office if they have served in a regional position. Thirty-six-year-old Raka, who is mayor of Surakarta city, would otherwise have been ineligible to contest the vice presidency. Several polls have put Subianto, 72, marginally ahead of his nearest rival Pranowo. This is his third run at the top office after losing to Widodo in the previous two elections. The incumbent defence chief, a former son-in-law of Indonesia's late dictator Suharto, remains dogged by allegations of his role in human rights abuses in Jakarta, restive province Papua and breakaway nation East Timor, but has never been charged. Widodo's Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle has chosen Pranowo as its candidate. He is viewed as a figure from a humble background and was initially touted as the favourite, but his popularity fell after he opposed Israel's participation in this year's U20 World Cup, with FIFA subsequently stripping Indonesia's hosting rights. He has announced chief security minister Mahfud MD as his running mate. The third challenger Baswedan is favoured by conservative Muslims in the Muslim-majority country and chose the chairman of the Islamist National Awakening Party (PKB), Muhaimin Iskandar, as his running mate. The next president will be sworn in next October, the elections commission said. The post Indonesia’s three-way presidential race set as deadline nears appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Decree dissolves Nagorno-Karabakh statelet by January
The separatist republic of Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan will cease to exist by 1 January as more than 65,000 people from the Armenian enclave have fled. The separatist leader of Nagorno-Karabakh ordered on Thursday the dissolution of all state institutions by the end of the year, saying the separatist statelet “ceases to exist” from 1 January 2024. An Azerbaijani court then placed Ruben Vardanyan in pre-trial detention after charging him with financing terrorism and other crimes. A Baku court ruled that Vardanyan, a businessman who headed the ethnic Armenian region from November 2022 until February this year, should be arrested and placed in pre-trial detention for four months, Azerbaijan’s state security service said. Meanwhile, Yerevan said Thursday the exodus continued from the breakaway enclave which Azerbaijan recaptured last week in a lighting offensive. By Thursday morning, “65,036 forcefully displaced persons crossed into Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh,” Armenian government spokesperson, Nazeli Baghdasaryan, said in a statement. Some 120,000 ethnic Armenians were estimated to be living in the territory before Baku’s offensive to retake the territory. “The state is providing suitable housing to all those who do not have a predetermined place of residence,” she said. On Sunday, Azerbaijan reopened the sole road linking Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia, the Lachin corridor policed by Russian peacekeepers — four days after Armenian separatist forces agreed to lay down arms and disband their army. The return of the Armenian-populated separatist enclave under the control of the central government in Baku has led to a mass exodus of ethnic Armenians. Internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh, which broke away from Baku three decades, was at the center of two wars between mostly Christian Armenia and predominantly Muslim Azerbaijan. Breakaway republic of Karabakh announces it will cease to ‘exist’
The self-proclaimed republic of Nagorno-Karabakh announced on Thursday it would cease to exist, after a military defeat by Azerbaijan followed by an exodus of over half of the enclave's population. The separatist leader of the territory issued a decree ordering the dissolution of all state institutions by the end of the year and said Nagorno-Karabakh "ceases to exist" as of January 1, 2024. The dissolution will bring to an end three decades of Armenia-backed self-rule for Nagorno-Karabakh, a majority ethnic Armenian enclave inside the internationally recognized borders of Azerbaijan. The decree said residents should "familiarize themselves with the conditions of reintegration" offered by Azerbaijan and make "an independent and individual decision" on whether to stay. Separatist leader Samvel Shakhramanyan also said that an agreement struck with Azerbaijan would ensure the "free, voluntary and unhindered passage" for all those who wanted to leave. He said the decision to dissolve the state was "based on the priority of ensuring the physical security and vital interests of the people of Artsakh", the Armenian name for the region. Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought two wars over Nagorno-Karabakh, in which tens of thousands have died. Last week, Nagorno-Karabakh separatists laid down their arms following a lightning military offensive by Azerbaijan. Tens of thousands of ethnic Armenians have since fled the enclave to Armenia. Ethnic cleansing fear drives Karabakh exodus
More than 13,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh have arrived in Armenia Tuesday and more are leaving the breakaway territory of Azerbaijan fearing ethnic cleansing under Azeris who have taken over the enclave in a lightning offensive over the weekend. Hundreds of vehicles also were heading to Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh on Tuesday, an Agence France-Presse team at the scene said. The flow of vehicles was continuous, with families piling their belonging on top of their cars and stopping only a few seconds at the last Azerbaijani checkpoint before entering Armenia along the so-called Lachin Corridor, AFP reporters said. Refugees were seen crowding into a humanitarian hub set up in a local theater in the city of Goris to register for transport and housing. Amid the exodus that started Sunday, officials of the separatist government in the self-proclaimed republic said a fuel depot explosion on Monday had killed 20 people. They said 13 bodies were found at the scene of a fuel depot blast and seven more people had died of their injuries. Another 290 people had been hospitalized and “dozens of patients remain in critical condition,” they added. Armenia’s health ministry said it had sent a team of doctors to the rebel stronghold of Stepanakert by helicopter. The Azerbaijani presidency said Baku had also sent medicine to help the wounded. In Brussels, envoys from Baku and Yerevan prepared to meet in the first such encounter since Azerbaijan’s swift defeat of separatist forces last week. Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought two wars in the last three decades over the majority ethnic Armenian enclave within the internationally recognized border of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan’s operation on 19 September to seize control of the territory forced the separatists to lay down their arms under the terms of a ceasefire agreed the following day and brokered by Russia. with AFP The post Ethnic cleansing fear drives Karabakh exodus appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
PM wants Armenia to ratify ICC treaty
Armenia-Russia relations seemed on the brink of breakup Sunday as Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan lashed at Moscow for failing to help protect his countrymen against Azerbaijan’s military offensive in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh. In nationally televised comments, Pashinyan, who is being blamed by Armenians for the deaths of separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh, called the security guarantees of the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization as “insufficient” and that Moscow failed to help Armenian defenders in the disputed territory. Azerbaijani troops defeated Armenian rebels in Nagorno-Karabakh last week and are now disarming the separatists under a truce brokered by Moscow on Friday and with Russian peacekeepers facilitating the demilitarization. Pashinyan added that Armenia should ratify the treaty which established the International Criminal Court, which has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin over the Ukraine war. No sympathy The first Red Cross aid convoy has crossed into the disputed Armenian enclave as Azerbaijan forces showed off Saturday part of the captured rebel arsenal: Sniper rifles, Kalashnikov rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and four tanks painted with cross insignia. At Armenia’s Kornidzor border crossing, five kilometers from the Hakari bridge, the convoy’s route, dozens of angry Armenians await news of their relatives in Karabakh. The first group of Nagorno-Karabakh refugees entered Armenia on Sunday, an Agence France-Presse team at the border said. The group of a few dozen people were questioned by Azerbaijani border guards before entering the Armenian village of Kornidzor, where they were registered by Armenian officials. On the other side of the border in the Azerbaijani town of Beylagan, just outside the breakaway region, local civilians had no sympathy for their Armenian neighbors and were celebrating their government’s victory over the rebels. State television played patriotic music paying tribute to the nation and its army, and the roadside was lined with flags and portraits of dozens of local “martyrs,” fallen in the fighting during the previous 30 years. Azerbaijan takes over Armenian enclave
Azerbaijan troops disarmed separatists in the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region and seized control of the Armenian enclave in a lightning military operation on Thursday. Armenian separatists from the disputed mountain territory agreed to lay down their arms after losing 200 people from clashes and joined peace talks with Azerbaijan in the city of Yevlakh on Thursday. Russian peacekeepers are mediating the talks. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday urged Azerbaijan leader Ilham Aliyev during a telephone call to ensure the security of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. It was the first time in decades that Baku had regained control over Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenia warned the United Nations Thursday that Azerbaijan was carrying out “ethnic cleansing” and committing a “crime against humanity” in the region. Speaking before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Armenian ambassador Andranik Hovhannisyan recalled that his country had previously warned of “looming ethnic cleansing” in Nagorno-Karabakh, stressing “now it is in progress.” The post Azerbaijan takes over Armenian enclave appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Azerbaijan claims victory after Karabakh separatists surrender
Azerbaijan said Wednesday it had regained control over breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh for the first time in decades after separatist Armenian fighters agreed to lay down their arms in the face of a military operation. The stunning collapse of separatist resistance represents a major victory for Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev in his quest to bring the Armenian-majority Nagorno-Karabakh back under Baku's control. Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought two wars over the mountainous region since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The years of conflict have been marked by abuses on both sides, and there are concerns of a fresh refugee crisis as Karabakh's Armenian population fears being forced out. A day after Azerbaijan launched its military operation in the region, Baku and the ethnic Armenian authorities in Karabakh announced a ceasefire deal had been brokered by Russian peacekeepers to stop the fighting. "Azerbaijan restored its sovereignty as a result of successful anti-terrorist measures in Karabakh," Aliyev said in a televised address. Aliyev claimed that most of the Armenian forces in the region had been destroyed and said the withdrawal of separatist troops had already begun. The attack left "at least 200 killed and more than 400 wounded," Nagorno-Karabakh separatist official Gegham Stepanyan said. Late on Wednesday, Armenia's defence ministry said that Azerbaijan had fired on its positions along the border between the arch-foes. Such skirmishes are frequent along the border. Truce deal Under the truce deal, the separatists said they had agreed to fully dismantle their army and that Armenia would pull out any forces it had in the region. Azerbaijan's defence ministry said that "all weapons and heavy armaments are to be surrendered" under the supervision of Russia's 2,000-strong peacekeeping force on the ground. Both sides said talks on reintegrating the breakaway territory into the rest of Azerbaijan would be held on Thursday in the city of Yevlakh. President Vladimir Putin said Russian peacekeepers would mediate the talks. Moscow has said several of members of its force in Karabakh were killed when the car they were travelling in came under fire. Latest violence Baku's operation marked the latest violence over the rugged territory. After the Soviet Union fell apart, Armenian separatists seized the region -- internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan -- in the early 1990s. The war left 30,000 people dead and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes. In a six-week war in 2020, Azerbaijan recaptured swathes of territory in and around the region. President Aliyev on Wednesday praised the "political competence" of his country's historic rival. "The developments that took place yesterday and today will have a positive impact on the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia," he said. Azerbaijani presidential foreign policy advisor Hikmet Hajiyev promised safe passage for the separatists who surrendered and said Baku sought the "peaceful reintegration" of Karabakh Armenians. A separatist official said over 10,000 people have been evacuated from Armenian communities in Nagorno-Karabakh and "forced to find a shelter" elsewhere in the territory. Russia's President Putin said he hoped for a "peaceful" resolution, adding that Moscow has been in contact with all sides in the conflict. Putin held talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan Wednesday evening, but the Kremlin insisted the crisis was "Azerbaijan's internal affair". 'War is over' Jubilant residents in Azerbaijan's capital expressed hope the deal heralded a definitive victory and the end of the decades-long conflict. "I was very happy with this news. Finally, the war is over," 67-year-old pensioner Rana Ahmedova told AFP. In Armenia, there was fury at a second defeat in Karabakh in three years. Clashes broke out in Armenia's capital Yerevan, where thousands of protesters waving the separatist region's flag blocked a main road and riot police guarded official buildings. Demonstrators threw bottles and stones at police as they slammed the government's handling of the crisis, while officers used stun grenades and made arrests. The loss in Karabakh ratchets up domestic pressure on Pashinyan, who has faced stinging criticism at home for making concessions to Azerbaijan since the 2020 defeat. "We are losing our homeland, we are losing our people," said Sargis Hayats, a 20-year-old musician. Pashinyan "must leave, time has shown that he cannot rule. No one gave him a mandate for Karabakh to capitulate," he said. The Armenian leader has insisted that his government had not been involved in drafting the latest ceasefire deal. Again denying his country's army was in the enclave, he said he expected Russia's peacekeepers to ensure Karabakh's ethnic-Armenian residents could stay "in their homes, on their land". International pressure Azerbaijan's assault came as Moscow, the traditional power broker in the region is bogged down and distracted by its war on Ukraine, which has left it isolated in the West. But its peacekeepers there appeared to have played a key role in helping to negotiate the ceasefire and will now oversee its implementation. Turkey, a historic ally of predominantly Muslim Azerbaijan that views mostly Christian Armenia as one of its main regional rivals, had called the operation "justified". The EU and United States have been mediating talks between Baku and Yerevan in recent months aimed at securing a lasting peace deal between the two foes. The White House said Wednesday it was concerned by the humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. "We're obviously still watching very, very closely the worsening humanitarian situation inside Nagorno-Karabakh," US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters. He added the situation "has been exacerbated by the hostilities perpetrated by Azerbaijan" in Karabakh, where there are now fears of a refugee crisis. Quo Vadis Gilas?
Over the past week, basketball crazy FIBA co-host Philippines has been the mecca for world basketball. Hordes of foreign basketball fans eager to support their teams have trooped to our country, and along with thousands of local fans, including yours truly, have endured the hardships of hours long traffic, bewildering weather of humidity, heat and massive rainfall melding intermittently all within the day enroute to the venues, just to witness live the World Cup’s top hoopsters. Despite what I felt were atrociously expensive tickets for the lower box sections, being an incorrigible basketball fanatic, I just felt that I could not pass up the chance to be part of the once in a lifetime World Cup experience, particularly since I would be in the company of family friends, businessman basketball-sportscaster Dominic Uy who shared his insightful off-court commentaries and who was responsible for getting us some great seats, my erstwhile golfing partner Cookie la’O who had partnered with me decades back to bag the prestigious Mango Tee Tournament championship in Alabang, and my son-in-law, noted New Balance shoe designer Gabe la’O, who flew all the way from New Hampshire to watch some top-notch games. Never mind that they are all as La Salle Green as can be but their youthful energies in cheering their hearts out for every basket, block, steal and mad breakaway was infectious. I watched the US-Greece and Gilas-Italy games live and the experience did not disappoint. The highlights of those games in consonance with the tremendous roars of the fans will be replayed in my memory bank over and over again for a long time to come. But, of course, like all true-blue basketball aficionados, recounting and analyzing the wows of a won game and the what-ifs of a heartbreaker and the future of Gilas is par for the course. So here goes. Despite the four heartbreaking defeats to the Dominican Republic, Angola, Italy and South Sudan, the last game of Gilas winning against the undisputed Asian champion, China, has given us a slight glimmer of hope, again, to have a chance to make it to Paris next year. Although the win was masterfully achieved as a team effort, undoubtedly it was Jordan Clarkson who practically carried Gilas on his shoulders with his hot 3-point shooting in the third quarter. Even China’s coach Sasha Dordevic and NBA star Li Kaier of the Minneapolis Timberwolves pointed to Clarkson as the main reason for their never-before lopsided loss to Gilas. Because of this win, Gilas is ranked 24th out of the 32 participating countries, enough to allow us to participate in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and so the buzz over Gilas’ chances continues. What changes are needed? As far as the team composition is concerned, unless there are injuries, I believe the current line-up is as good as it can get. All are unquestionably standouts. On the other hand, as far as the coaching leadership is concerned, Chot Reyes already declared immediately after the win over China that he is stepping down because the incessant social media abuse from his critics has been “brutal” for him and his family. Kudos to Chot for his service to the country and for making this move rightly expected of any leader who has not delivered on the goals. The options, however, are limited. And worse, there is an extremely short timeline to make the choice because the Asian Games starts on 23 September. Tab Baldwin of course is the popular clamor, but the UAAP season begins as well this September and I don’t think he will leave the Blue Eagles coachless. Also it seems that there could be some pushback from certain SBA and PBA quarters who might not be too keen on Tab’s up front in your face style. Tim Cone is my own bet because not only is he an equally great coach but also for continuity since he is already in the Gilas coaching staff. Regardless of the choice, however, the problem of conflicting schedules of the players with their home teams will continue to be an obstacle to building a Gilas team that needs to be properly honed with significant playing time together. PBA and SBP will have to somehow firmly reach an understanding, otherwise Gilas fans will have to face up to the reality of more heartbreaks. Quo Vadis Gilas? Until next week… OBF! FIBA: Angola blasts Gilas
An Angolan team came out to disrupt Gilas Pilipinas’ game plan and succeeded in running away with an 80-70 triumph in the FIBA Asia Cup in front of a stunned crowd of 12,784 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday. Gerson Goncalves, the man who provided the spark for Angola with back-to-back treys in the second period, also keyed his team’s breakaway in the fourth period that allowed the 11-time African champion to gain firm control. Angola broke into the win column in Group A after pushing Italy to the limit in the opener. This time, the Angolans brought in a more aggressive approach on the defensive end and made things more difficult for the Filipinos. Angola survived a last-ditch rally put up by the Filipinos, who unloaded 11 straight points and came to within 68-73 with 1:12 remaining. But Gerson Domingo’s dagger three-point basket in the 47-second mark, quelled the rally, allowing Angola to escape with the win. With the loss, Gilas found themselves in a must-win situation against Italy on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Gilas had a promising start as they dictated the tempo early. By the end of the first period, Gilas were already able to rotate 10 players and took a 19-12 lead. In the second period, head coach Chot Reyes allowed young big men Kai Sotto and AJ Edu to play at the same time. The two were teammates during the Batang Gilas days four years ago and are now embracing a more challenging role in the men’s level. A Roger Pogoy basket gave Gilas their first sizable lead, 28-17, but an 11-0 run capped by back-to-back three-point baskets Goncalves allowed the Angolans to gain momentum. Nabulaga
The longest-running noontime show in the country, Eat Bulaga, recently underwent a transformation that sparked an uproar, and consequently, a mutiny by its main talents — the triumvirate of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon. Eat Bulaga is a national staple when it comes to TV entertainment, and its durability is without a doubt, an amazing feat! Imagine being on air for 44 years, which practically is 81 percent of my lifetime! So I grew up with Eat Bulaga, even though I am not a fan, especially with the TVJ trio. But there is no escaping this show, especially before the digital age descended upon us, and social media became the new platform for entertainment. In those years in the 80s up to the early 2000s, Eat Bulaga spawned segment after segment that became so popular because it catered to our inanity and whims of shallow, hysterical theatrics, and it was successful perhaps because we needed it as our catharsis in our everyday misery. Eat Bulaga became our national pastime also because we were made to feel good about ourselves in large part due to instant gratification of cash and incentives, and the chance to shine on National TV with our looks and talents. It was an avenue of promise and opportunity, not to mention, a therapy for our overworked and stressed souls. It was, for all intent and purpose, a part of our daily lives meant to provide merriment while we suspend our mundane existence. So what happened? Why did TVJ stage a breakaway? It was said that the management wanted to refresh the show, and make it more attuned with the times, but still with TVJ as an integral part of the program. But then, TVJ is that typical dinosaur who believes they are most dominant and therefore resistant to change. The trio does not want change, maybe because they believe that TVJ made Eat Bulaga. But did they? Or is it the other way around, and is more accurate to say that Eat Bulaga MADE TVJ? Because as I saw history right before my very eyes, I know personally how the show managed to achieve endurance not because of TVJ, but because of creative segments like Little Miss Philippines, Mr. Pogi, Bulagaan, Pinoy Henyo, Laban o Bawi, All for Juan and Aldub that managed to capture our need for thrill, delight, and attention. Also, the show thrived, not because of TVJ but because of the rise of new talents OTHER than them, such as Aiza Seguerra, Coney Reyes-Mumar, Toni Rose Gayda, Christine Jacob, Allan K, Sex Bomb Dancers, JoWaPao and Alden and Maine. Sure, TVJ may have had a hand in the creative development of the segments as well as in honing the talents, and they really loomed larger than life in Eat Bulaga. That is a fact. But it is also factual to say that Eat Bulaga was the one who gambled on them, and they are now who they are because Eat Bulaga was their daily platform and center stage. And so we have this chicken-or-egg conundrum of who really made who. And I dare Reiterate this — TVJ may have created Eat Bulaga from their imagination, but it was Eat Bulaga that really made TVJ who they are now. And Eat Bulaga will survive, and continue to enliven us, even without TVJ. Mark my word. The post Nabulaga appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
