‘Senior High’ and ‘Fractured’: Youth is not wasted on these young stars
The shows Euphoria, Elite and 13 Reasons Why offer depictions of the so-called Generation Z that baffle, shock and titillate their audiences. The young people in these shows succumb to the call of their sexual urges, wantonly take prohibited drugs and drink themselves to catatonia. Raging hormones fuel their pursuit of YOLO (you only live once) moments and defiance of authority figures. That same sense of edgy, confused, tension-filled environment of sex and drugs are also in the local shows Senior High and Fractured, which follow the footsteps and narratives of their international counterparts in highlighting the many versions of truths and lies in the lives of their young characters. Central hook In Senior High, the stories of teenagers of different economic backgrounds in a private high school, their struggles with authority figures, and a big tragedy-mystery that needs to be resolved are the central anchor and hook. The made-for-TV campus that is Northford High looks and screams “mahal ang tuition.” Students are all in crispy Ivy League-inspired uniforms, and the typical school cliques are well- represented. What has been presented so far in the show’s 25 episodes are a tragic death, bullying, mental health, video scandals and online gossip accepted as gospel truth, homoeroticism, drugs, sexual predation and anger issues with parental and other authority figures. In the acting department, top-tier performances come from Andrea Brillantes, who plays the roles of twin sisters; JK Labajo, who brings a true rich-boy sophistication to his role; Elijah Canlas and Miggy Jimenez, both lending juicy and saucy touches to their juvenile delinquent characters; Kyle Echarri, exuding a becoming softness and knight-to-the rescue vibe; and Daniela Stranner, a delicious alpha mean girl. Among the authority figures, Angel Aquino, Mon Confiado, Anna Abad Santos and Baron Geisler -- in a career-defining performance – are superb. Senior High scratches the surface of teen troubles. As more episodes come, one hopes the problems of today’s youth get a more thorough dissection an a broader, more compassionate perspective. [caption id="attachment_191711" align="aligncenter" width="525"] The cast of ‘Fractured’[/caption] Trapped vloggers In Fractured, a group of popular, influential vloggers are invited to an is island resort to make content about it. The vloggers get their biggest plot twist when they are all marooned in what seems like a deserted part of the island resort. Aside from the elements, they have to contend with scarce food and water, the uncertainty of rescue and other looming dangers. Three episodes on, what makes Fractured an interesting watch is the deft manner by which the personal lives, problems, insecurities and dark sides of the vlogger characters are revealed. Since tensions among them are at an all-time high, catfights between femme vloggers erupt. Two of the macho vloggers assert alpha status, while a different and groovy kind of love blossoms between two male vloggers. Aside from the writing and glossy look of the show, the acting by Seth Fedelin, Francine Diaz, Kaori Oinuma, Daniela Stranner, Raven Rigor and Sean Tristan are also compelling come-ons. For all the chaos and darkness in Senior High and Fractured, we also witness real friendships forged by the young characters, love at its most romantic or bittersweet, and realizations and redemptions even. Youth is not wasted on the younger ones, after all. The post ‘Senior High’ and ‘Fractured’: Youth is not wasted on these young stars appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
‘Snow White’ like never before
Repertory Philippines’ Theater for Young Audiences opens its first production after the Covid-19 pandemic with a new version of a classic fairy tale. Snow White and the Prince is a love story between these two iconic characters. Written by Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman, the same authors of RTYA’s very successful 2017 production Rapunzel, Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale, it is a musical comedy for the young and the young at heart and will be enjoyed by the whole family. On the eve of her birthday celebration, Snow White anticipates her first ball, and dreams of romance. She meets a charming prince at the ball but her dreams are shattered by her stepmother who is jealous of her beauty. For her protection, her loving nursemaid sends her to the forest to find the nurse’s seven (of course) friends. Also, in the picture are a magic mirror who can never lie and, the symbol of evil, an apple. The guiding principle behind all RTYA productions is that children deserve as good a theater as adults and this production strives to do just that. Joy Virata, director and RTYA’s creative director, has gathered a group of both veteran and young actors to tell the story through simple and humorous dialogue and delightfully tuneful songs. Leading the cast are REP and RTYA regulars Carla Gueverra Laforteza and Pinky Marquez as the Queen with newcomer Julia Serad alternating. Veterans Chino Veguillas and Franco Ramos play the all-important Mirror along with newbie Sebastian Katigbak. In the title roles are Kiara Dario, Pappel (Ashlee Factor), Jillian Ita-as and Anyah as Snow White and MC dela Cruz, Neo Rivera and Rapah Manalo as the Prince. Abi Sulit, Ring Antonio and Cara Barredo alternate as the Nurse. Fourteen (seven times two) actors of all heights, weights, genders and ages (and with varying theater backgrounds), play the friends. ‘The Super Models’, the original influencers, come to Apple TV
Naomi, Christy, Linda and Cindy are back, recounting how they revolutionized fashion as the first supermodels in the 1990s in a new series for Apple TV. "The Super Models", which launches on the streaming platform on Wednesday, looks back on the four women who created a template for today's uber-influencers by injecting an element of personality into the job of modelling. Britain's Naomi Campbell, 53, Canada's Linda Evangelista, 58 and the two Americans, Cindy Crawford, 57, and Christy Turlington, 54, dominated the fashion scene during one of its most explosive periods. They worked with the top designers and photographers, though it was a music video, George Michael's "Freedom", which helped cement their status in the public consciousness as the first "supermodels". "(The 1990s) was a very unique time historically, where everything was converging -- fashion, music, you had MTV just starting -- ...right before the brink of the internet," said co-director Larissa Bills. "These women were like the original influencers. Prior to the internet, prior to social media, they were able to bring a whole world to the public in a way that hadn't been done before." It is the first time they have shared their story together. "The fact that they're all in their 50s now... it was the right time. They're in a more reflective space in their lives," said Bills. All from modest backgrounds, the foursome made millions of dollars and reveled in their stardom. But they also faced many of the horrific aspects of the fashion industry -- addiction, eating disorders, sexual harassment. Evangelista faced perhaps the most challenging moments, with a husband accused of rape by other women (the case was finally dropped in early 2023), breast cancer and a botched cosmetic surgery which she says left her "disfigured". Age is an under-current of their discussions, and was underlined again in recent days after the foursome featured on the cover of Vogue in the United States and Britain. The distinct lack of wrinkles led many to accuse the magazine of doctoring the images. For Bills, though, the series is a celebration. "They shouldered such a giant responsibility -- to be 16 years old and the face of a brand. The industry was not regulated at the time and they really did it on their own. Well done to them," she said. adm/er/gil © Agence France-Presse The post ‘The Super Models’, the original influencers, come to Apple TV appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Aces of design
The search for the brightest and most creative interior designers and architects in the country continues after Nippon Paint (Coatings) Philippines Inc. turned on the green light with a theme launch of the Asia Young Designer Awards — a platform designed to inspire students to develop their skills through cross-learning opportunities and networking with key industry players, as well as with their fellow peers in the region. Held at the Quezon Hall 1 of Seda Vertis in Diliman, Quezon City, the event encouraged students of Interior Design and Architecture to use their talents in transforming future environments and creating a significant impact in the succeeding generations through practical design solutions that help address pressing issues of our time. Now on its 15th year, this year’s AYDA Awards carries the theme “Converge: Championing Purposeful Design,” which is a fitting reflection of Nippon Paint’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of creative excellence. This year’s theme is about finding your core and what you truly believe in before manifesting it into your design. It focuses on a designer’s journey in searching for a cause worth fighting for. What we believe, and invest in, may change over a period of time. The use of the word “converge,” on the other hand, refers to that situation when a point or a line meets — leading to a common result. “The AYDA Awards would like to help shape a future where designers from different backgrounds, cultures and regions can learn from each other and deliver the best possible solution to common and underlying social challenges,” explained Giselle Campos, sales and marketing manager of Nippon Paint (Coatings) Philippines Inc. “Today, as designers face the challenge of providing a balance between sustainability and urbanization, and at a time when digitalization has already taken over interpersonal bonding, we believe that going local should also be considered fit for global appreciation,” she added. Aside from formally jumpstarting this year’s awards program, and explaining the contest mechanics, the launch was also used to introduce some of the biggest names in the industry who have agreed to serve as judges for the awards program. Leading the panel of adjudicators this year are Ar. Eduardo Casares (architecture category head judge), the brains behind the structure of the Tutuban Center in Divisoria, and IDr. Wilmer Lopez (interior design category head judge), president and creative director of Space Encounters, an interior design firm that specializes in interior branding and mid-century modern furniture. Meditate to clear the mind, feel sense of ease
In John Aguilar’s third and latest book, Methods to Greatness, the author wrote about the importance of nurturing and nourishing the soul based on his interview with Nameeta Dargani, the founding member and president of Art of Living Foundation Philippines. Dargani, in turn, led a meditation session at the book’s recent launch held in an upscale shopping mall. The term meditation, according to United States National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, “refers to a variety of practices that focus on mind and body integration.” These meditative practices are used to “calm the mind and enhance overall well-being.” Some of them involve “maintaining mental focus on a particular sensation,” such as breathing, a sound, a visual image or a mantra, which is a repeated word or phrase. Dargani, who’s been practicing meditation for 18 years now, shares how she got into it and why she stayed. “Someone told me it would help with my back pain,” she tells DAILY TRIBUNE in an email interview. “It did so much more than that!” These days, she meditates at least once a day in the mornings after doing her yoga practice and breathing techniques that she learned in the Art of Living course she attended in 2005. She also likes to meditate in the evenings for 15 to 20 minutes before her day ends. “The benefits were instant and cumulative shortly after I took the Art of Living course,” she recalls. Art of Living Foundation is touted as one of the largest non-profit organizations in the world. It operates more than 10,000 centers in over 150 countries, offering various educational and self-development programs in meditation, yoga and other tools that help eliminate stress, as well as create a deep sense of inner peace, happiness and well-being. “My mind got clearer,” she adds. “I was getting things done more efficiently with better focus and attention. I felt an overall sense of ease and joy. A lot of my fears and insecurities faded away. After tasting these benefits, I decided it made a lot of sense to incorporate breathing techniques and a meditation practice into my daily routine.” Dargani understands why many people can’t focus, get too distracted or tend to fall asleep when attempting to meditate. “This is why breathwork is so helpful,” she points out. “In particular, the Sudarshan Kriya (SKY Breath) technique taught in the Art of Living course. Working with the breath gives the mind something to do and focus on. It very naturally leads you to a state of meditation.” She then shares a “great tip” she learned in the Art of Living Meditation program: “When you sit for meditation, you mentally say to yourself: ‘I am nothing, I want nothing, I do nothing.’ Only for the duration of the meditation, and then all the labels and desires can come back after that!” “For me, this strategy really works and helps me to let go and drop everything that’s going on in my life so that I can just sit and be present with the experience,” she says. “Apart from this, the usual guidelines are to sit with your spine erect, your back can be rested if needed on a chair. It’s really important to be comfortable so that you can transcend the body level.” In the Philippines, Dargani explains, the foundation has “touched the lives of thousands of people from all backgrounds and walks of life,” including corporates, youth, prison inmates, military, PNP, victims of trauma and the general public.” It regularly offers both online and offline programs.
