Escape from Maui
Tourists trapped in the burning seaside town of Lahaina in Maui, Hawaii said they were stuck in hotels without electricity for days, ran low on food and left a warzone when they evacuated. "We were stuck in our rooms for three days. It was very scary because there was no light. We couldn't use our phones. We couldn't call family," Lorraina Peterson, 46, said. "The elevator stopped running and some people were stuck inside the elevator," Peterson, who was honeymooning on the paradise island when the wildfire trapped her and hundreds of others in their hotel, added. Guests were finally evacuated to the airport when the hotel ran out of food, she said. Tourists were taken to the airport in school buses, where they were met by volunteers distributing sandwiches and water. Canadian Brandon Wilson, who had traveled to Hawaii with his wife to celebrate their 25th anniversary, recalled that fires cut the power to their AirBnB two days after they arrived in Maui. By Thursday morning, they were running low on food and had no cash to buy groceries, so they decided to try to leave. "As we drove through Lahaina it looked like a warzone," he told Agence France-Presse. "It really looks like somebody came along just bombed the whole town. It's completely devastated." The death toll from the disaster rose to 53, Maui County officials said Thursday. Brushfires on the west coast of Hawaii's Maui island — fueled by high winds from a nearby hurricane — broke out Tuesday and rapidly engulfed Lahaina. The flames moved so quickly that many were caught off-guard, trapped in the streets or jumping into the ocean in a desperate bid to escape. Governor Josh Green said 80 percent of the town was gone. DENR-BMB holds 25th Philippine Eagle Week celebration
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources observed the 25th Philippine Eagle Week from 4 to 10 June through its Biodiversity Management Bureau. The event was an occasion to look back at the successes in conserving the iconic and critically endangered Philippine eagle during a quarter of a century, but, as DENR Assistant Secretary and concurrent BMB Director Marcial Amaro Jr. said, the celebration was also a reminder that there is more work to be done to ensure the survival and viability of the prized raptor often described as “national treasure.” PEW is celebrated every 4-10 June of each year in accordance with Presidential Proclamation No. 79, series of 1999, to educate the public on the importance and conservation of the country’s national bird , which is considered one of the largest and most powerful among forest raptors in the world. The Philippine eagle (scientific name Pithecophaga jefferyi) is continually being threatened by hunting and loss of habitat. "By conserving our national patrimony and strengthening our advocacies, we are able to improve and harmonize conservation efforts to put forward strategies and to curb the direct and indirect threats to Philippine eagle populations through relevant conservation actions concerning habitat restoration, law enforcement, management of captive and wild populations, research and conservation education,” said Amaro. This year’s PEW theme, “Unity in Action: Achieving success together,” was a call to all Filipinos to protect forest habitats to conserve future generations of Philippine eagles and their territories, and allow new generations to thrive and co-exist with other threatened wildlife. “The habitats conserved locally and protected by communities significantly contribute to environmental stability and security of human well-being, in the looming threats of climate change,” Amaro said. The BMB lined up several activities to celebrate PEW from 6 to 9 June at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center in Quezon City. Philippine Eagle Foundation Executive Director Dennis Salvador and Maestro Fernando Sena, the father of Philippine Art Workshops, were among those who kicked off the four-day celebration. One of the highlights of the event was an art exhibit dubbed “Isang Libong Obra Para Sa Agila,” organized by BMB and PEF in collaboration with the Philippine Fauna Art Society, Buenas Artes Art Facility and Biodiversity Finance Initiative Philippines. It showcased art works depicting the Philippine eagle by Filipino artists, who even paid a registration fee that would be donated for the installation of a water system in a community that helps protect a Philippine eagle habitat in Davao City. There were also art workshops conducted by the Buenas Artes and PhilFAS; an audio-video presentation on Philippine eagle conservation; and an interactive presentation called “Fly Malaya Fly,” which chronicled the love of a mother eagle for her baby eaglet. Special prizes were given to participants whose artworks best illustrated the Philippine eagle. In September last year, DENR Secretary Antonia Loyzaga appealed to lawmakers to prioritize the passage of proposed measures to strengthen Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act during the joint hearing of the Committees on Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change; on Finance; on Sustainable Development Goals, Innovation and Futures Thinking; and on Ways and Means. According to Loyzaga, the support of lawmakers in the amendment of RA 9147 is crucial in advancing collective efforts and initiatives to sustainably manage the country’s wildlife resources. The amendment of RA 9147 is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Targets 13, 14 and 15 (Climate Action, Life Below Water and Life on Land) that call for urgent and significant actions to reduce the degradation of natural habitats and halt the loss of biodiversity, she added. In July 2022, Loyzaga — together with PEF ED Salvador — met with Dr. Robert Kennedy, a renowned ornithologist and pioneer advocate on Philippine eagle research and conservation, for possible collaboration to help save the Philippine eagle. The Philippine eagle is endemic to the Philippines and is the largest forest raptor in the country. Found in the islands of Luzon, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao, the majestic bird has been classified as critically endangered under Department Administrative Order 2019-09 or the Updated National List of Threatened Philippine Fauna and Their Categories, and by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Sen. Go backs healthcare improvement programs
Senator Christopher "Bong" Go hailed the groundbreaking of the Tarlac City General Hospital in Barangay Binauganan, Tarlac City, on Thursday, 20 April, a day after the city celebrated its 25th Charter Anniversary. As Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, Go was among those who helped push for the construction of the hospital to benefit the residents of Tarlac City and its neighboring areas. In his video message, Go highlighted the importance of investing in healthcare infrastructures to improve the overall health and well-being of the Filipino people. "Access to quality healthcare is a basic human right that every Filipino should be entitled to," Go said. "That is why I am committed to supporting initiatives that will improve our healthcare system and make it more accessible to those who need it the most,” he added. The event was a significant milestone for the people of Tarlac City, as it marked the beginning of the construction of a state-of-the-art hospital that will provide essential healthcare services to the community. As Chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Go has been instrumental in supporting various healthcare programs throughout the country. He has consistently pushed for the allocation of sufficient funds for health services and advocated for initiatives aimed at improving access to healthcare services for Filipinos, especially those living in rural and underserved areas. These include the establishment of Malasakit Centers, Super Health Centers, and specialty centers. Malasakit Centers bring together representatives from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Health, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. These one-stop shops aim to support impoverished patients in reducing their hospital costs to the least possible amount. In Tarlac, a Malasakit Center is located at the Tarlac Provincial Hospital in Tarlac City. Go is the principal author and sponsor of Republic Act No. 11463 or the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, which institutionalized the Malasakit Centers program. To date, 157 operational centers have helped more than seven million Filipinos nationwide, according to the DOH. “Sa mga pasyente, lapitan niyo lang ang Malasakit Center dahil para ‘to sa inyo. Kung may hospital bill kayo, nandiyan ang mga ahensya ng gobyerno na tutulong para mabayaran ito,” said Go. Meanwhile, Go is also pushing for the establishment of more Super Health Centers in strategic areas nationwide which can significantly help reduce hospital occupancy rates while bringing government medical services closer to the grassroots. Through the collective efforts of fellow lawmakers, sufficient funds had been allocated under the Health Facilities Enhancement Program of the DOH for 307 Super Health Centers in 2022 and 322 in 2023. DOH, the lead implementing agency, identifies the strategic areas where they will be constructed. In Tarlac province, necessary funds have been allocated by Congress last year for the DOH to construct Super Health Centers in the towns of Gerona, La Paz, Paniqui, Victoria, Mayantoc, and San Jose. More Super Health Centers were funded this year in Tarlac City and in the towns of Camiling, Capas, Concepcion, Moncada, San Clemente, San Manuel, and Santa Ignacia. The senator also reiterated his support for President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s call to establish specialty centers in key regions outside Metro Manila. He added that the creation of these specialty health facilities is one of the likely optimal solutions to address the gaps in healthcare across the country. The establishment of specialty centers is among the health-related legislative agenda contained in the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 signed by Marcos. Go expressed his gratitude to the people of Tarlac City for their unwavering support. He pledged to continue working hard for Filipinos and the entire country, and to prioritize initiatives that will improve their lives. The Senator also acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the city government led by Mayor Cristy Angeles as well as the provincial government led by Gov. Susan Yap in bringing public services closer to their constituents. Aside from the Tarlac City hospital, Go also supported the construction or improvement of roads in Concepcion, Gerona, La Paz, Pura, San Jose, Victoria and Tarlac City; improvement of the flood control structures along the Moriones River in Tarlac City; and construction of multipurpose buildings in San Manuel and Victoria, among others.
