Makati FC standouts shine in PFF U15 Boys National Championship

Bannered by a complete roster of players from Makati FC, National Capitol Region FA finally made it to the top of the PFF U15 Boys National Championship.      Dominic Tom's 94th minute strike lifted NCRFA to a 1-0 win at extra time over Negros Occidental FA in a thrilling final Friday at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.      It was NCRFA's first-ever PFF U15 title that was made possible through discipline and hardwork.     Tom emerged as the Most Valuable Player and top goalscorer, while his fellow Makati FC teammates Joshua Merino and Alfonso Gonzalez won the Best Defender and Best Goalkeeper honors, respectively.      The best attacking team in the tournament, NCRFA scored a total of 79 goals with head coach Richard Leyble in tow. NCRFA went unbeaten in 10 matches, winning its first eight in convincing fashion before battling to a 3-3 draw with NOFA last Nov. 17, finishing on top of the group with a superior goal differential.       In the semifinals, NCRFA fashioned out a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Mount Apo RFA.      SeLu Lozano, Makati FC's chief executive officer, believes that the team has a bright future ahead, sharing the fact that almost all the players are an age younger.    "We started building this team four years ago when my dad handed me the management and operations of our club. This was never an overnight process and having this win only shows the amount of work we have put in to being the best U15 team in the country as of today. I am very proud of all our players because this is a testament to all their hard work," said Lozano.      A consistent producer of young great football players through the years, Makati FC is looking to align with the  Philippine Football Federation  to help in any way they can. The clubs extensive grassroots program since 1976 will continue for many years to come.     After its successful PFF U15 championship run, Makati FC will compete in the JSSL Asia youth football tournament in Singapore this April.      Lozano added that the best NOFA players are also current Makati FC players and will be together bannering the Philippine flag in Asia’s biggest youth football tournament.     “There is an abundance of talented players and coaches all over the country. With so much love and passion that we share for the sport, with a strong national program, we are not far to be recognised internationally and the goal is to give more opportunity to homegrown Filipinos to represent our flag and country. We should recognise the talent of these boys from NOFA through Coach Cocoy (Treyes)," said Lozano.      "The journey doesn’t end here. We will continue to do our best to share our blessing and opportunities with players from all over the country. The club aims to identify more talent all throughout the country and help provide them similar opportunities that will be able to bring them to the next level. Our purpose goes beyond just to teach football and win games. We’re here to develop well groomed human beings and provide them outlets that will lead them to a successful life," he added. "Having this win for such a prestigious tournament organized by the PFF paves the way for more younger kids to be inspired and see where they can be through being one with the vision of growing the game of football in our country.".....»»

Knighthoods for Murray and Farah in New Year's Honors List

LONDON (AP) — Andy Murray received a knighthood in Queen Elizabeth II's New Year's Honors list on Friday, recognition from the monarch for reaching the pinnacle of tennis by winning his second Wimbledon and Olympic titles on his way to topping the rankings. The 29-year-old Murray was previously named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, in 2012 after becoming Olympic champion for the first time. Joining Murray in being knighted in British sports is Mo Farah, who retained his 5,000- and 10,000-meter titles at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August, becoming the first British track and field athlete to win four Olympic gold medals. 'I'm so happy to be awarded this incredible honor from the country that has been my home since I moved here at the age of eight,' Farah said Friday. 'Looking back at the boy who arrived here from Somalia, not speaking any English, I could never have imagined where I would be today — it's a dream come true. 'I'm so proud to have had the opportunity to race for my country and win gold medals for the British people, who have been my biggest supporters throughout my career.' Lee Pearson, who won his 11th Paralympic gold in equestrian in Rio, was also knighted. He already held the MBE, OBE and CBE for services to equestrianism and to disabled sport. Damehoods went to heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill and rower Katherine Grainger, who both retired from competitive action following the Rio Olympics. Ennis-Hill added silver in Rio to her gold at London, as did Grainger, who came out of retirement to compete in the double sculls alongside Vicky Thornley. Knights are addressed as 'Sir' or 'Dame.' Recipients of the other honors have no title, but can put the letters after their names. The ranks for the Orders of the British Empire are Commander, Officer and Member, in descending order. Away from the Olympics, Wales manager Chris Coleman was awarded an OBE for steering his national football team into its first semifinal at the European Championship. Northern Ireland was eliminated by Wales at Euro 2016 in the round of 16 but its manager, Michael O'Neill, has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire, or MBE. Britain's honors are bestowed by the monarch, but recipients are selected by committees of civil servants from nominations made by the government and the public. .....»»
