PNB plans to establish digital bank subsidiary

The Philippine National Bank (PNB) is thinking of putting up a digital bank either as a subsidiary or stand-alone unit, according to its president and CEO Jose Arnulfo “Wick” Veloso. PNB president and CEO Jose Arnulfo “Wick” Veloso  “We’re discussing internally with the principals,” said Veloso. “They really want us to set up a digital bank” and a pure digital bank at that. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has drafted a circular for the establishment of digital banks in the country and the banking community is currently being consulted on this, including the proposal to impose a minimum capitalization of P1 billion for a digital banking license.  “Clearly, as we get to see more regulations (or) the regulatory body encouraging digital bank participation, we would like to also review that and probably put into a subsidiary or stand alone,” said Veloso. “I understand there is going to be different regulatory relief or ease of doing business for those that are going to set up purely digital banks. That is something that we are seriously reviewing.” Veloso, in a virtual press briefing on Friday, said that in the digital banking landscape as it is currently set up now, PNB is one of the leaders in the digital experience and since March when the lockdowns were implemented, the bank has been trying to convince clients to go digital.  “Others claim to be ahead of space in the digital world. I can proudly say that the only thing they are ahead of us are  — for one bank, the end-to-end account opening, and for another bank, it’s because of the end-to-end check deposit. But otherwise, there is no dfference with what they’re sharing with everyone else,” said Veloso. The bank has seen an increase of 18 percent in its digital and mobile transactions during the height of the pandemic lockdowns. As of end-September, they now have 696,000 users of their digital platforms, up 31 percent year-on-year.  “We want our customers to understand how they can easily manage their funds and transact by going online using our digital channels. We also want more people to learn about the products that are meant to fit all their needs (with digital banking experience),” said Veloso. Presently, PNB branches across the country are “reaching out to customers who have not yet registered with internet banking or mobile banking”. In the BSP proposed circular on digital banks, any existing banks applying to shift to digital banking are given three years to complete conversions including the closure of branches or branch lite units. The BSP said a digital bank will be confined to a digital platform and/or electronic channels “with minimal to no reliance” on physical touchpoints. It will not have a branch or branch-lite unit but it can offer offer financial products and services through cash agents and other delivery partners. However it will be required to keep a head office in the Philippines as its main point of contact and as a “central hub for receiving and resolving customer complaints.” There are three banks that are already applying to deliver digitized financial services but these applications are not digital bank applications but are applying under existing BSP banking classification, pending the digital banking regulation......»»

The Huawei MateBook 14 wants to be your new work buddy

Huawei leaps to the stage with this year’s MateBook 14 Notebook, fired up with AMD’s 4600-H processor. With a 307.5mm width and a height of 15.9mm, the MateBook 14 is one of the thinnest laptops you can get your hands on. It’s sleek and stands out with a premium look and feel. At only 1.49kg, the MateBook 14 is lightweight and easy to tag along where you can work comfortably. The trackpad is big and spacious, making it easier to navigate around. The 14-inch screen is incredible. It features 2160×1440 resolution, bright, and excellent viewing angles. The bezels are also razor-thin, giving more screen space. It also happens to be a touch screen, armed with buttery response of today’s smartphones. No need to navigate the trackpad or mouse for simple tasks, like scrolling pages up or down. The hinges are solid and sturdy. You’d need two hands to pry open this laptop and for me, that’s good. You can punch the keys at a rapid pace without experiencing any wobbling. One of the most important things I personally look into for choosing laptops, is the keyboard. Besides having sufficient and comfortable travel between keystrokes, it’s a personal preference to have that “snappy” feel to it. I’m sure I’m not alone in the world with that keyboard preference. And it’s a delight to report the MateBook 14 has that “snappy” feel in its keyboards, making typing an enjoyable experience. When working at night with the lights off, the MateBook 14 features a backlit keyboard. The MateBook 14 is only a new component in Huawei’s entire ecosystem. To bridge mobility and workflow, the Huawei Share allows you to transfer files between the laptop and Huawei smartphone seamlessly. So, if you need to hurry off, just tap your Huawei phone into the MateBook 14 and you can keep on working while outside. The MateBook 14 is a strong addition to Huawei’s laptop lineup. If you’re looking to get a solid laptop for work or for online learning, the MateBook 14 is worth checking out......»»

As COVID-19 ravages the Philippines, a bible thumper insults our intelligence

RJ Nieto We have been made too aware of the speakership catfight in the House of Representatives. On one side is Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano who, last year, agreed to a term sharing deal that entails his voluntary resignation this month. On the other side, the PDP-Laban Lord Allan Velasco, head of the House’s biggest political party. If Cayetano just complied with the term-sharing agreement that he himself insisted on having, then the nation could have moved on and returned its focus on the COVID-19 pandemic that has been ravaging the erstwhile flourishing Philippine economy. But that was not the case: after getting a taste of his lucrative position for 15 months, Cayetano didn’t want to let go. In mid-September, Cayetano said he should remain as the speaker as he claims to enjoy majority support. Days later, his camp even went a step further when Camarines Sur Rep. LRay Villafuerte accused Velasco of planning to delay the passage of the crucial 2021 National Budget. President Rodrigo Duterte, acting as head of the Kilusang Pagbabago Coalition, mediated the rift when he called for a meeting with Cayetano and Velasco. There are various versions of what happened during the meeting, but what’s clear is that both sides agreed to a vote on the speakership on October 14th. At this point, minus the speakership drama, pretty much everything else in the House, especially the 2021 budget deliberations, was going quite smoothly . At this point, the Cayetano-Velasco catfight was still a purely political skirmish. But things took a turn for the worse during the October 7 House session. While the budget debates were still ongoing, Cayetano abruptly declared the end of debates. He then moved to suspend House sessions until mid-November, effectively cancelling the October 14th vote for speaker. Cayetano’s move squarely violated Section 16(5), Article VI, of the Constitution, which forbids the House from adjourning for more than three days without the Senate’s nod. The term he used — “suspension” — is just semantic acrobatics for adjournment. Cayetano’s move effectively delayed the transmission to the Senate of the budget’s House version from October 14 to mid-November at the earliest. For the sake of holding onto power, he escalated the purely political skirmish into a full-blown national crisis. If Cayetano and his allies did not want a speakership change because his replacement will just delay the budget, then why did he delay the budget himself? The COVID-19 pandemic is creating a New Normal, and we need a national budget that takes this New Normal into account. However, the speaker’s latest political stunt risks the reenactment of the previous national budget, a budget that was written before COVID-19 ravaged us. How can the nation address the rampaging pandemic without a national budget that recognizes COVID-19 as a national disaster? We need more IT infrastructure funding as more Filipinos engage in e-commerce and as schools shift to online learning. We need more healthcare funding as Filipinos continue to get infected with this virus. We need more fiscal support for ailing businesses as thousands have gone bankrupt after the economy ground to a halt. But all of these may not happen because of what Cayetano did. He can bicker with anyone as much as he wants, but he should not sacrifice the welfare of this nation for the sake of his ambitions. Cayetano loves to quote the Bible every chance he gets, but it appears that the Bible he reads excludes all the verses that mention greed. I know for a fact that politicians want power. Running for office, after all, is inherently a quest to gain power. But power is sought not for power’s sake. Power is just a means to towards an end, and that end should be public welfare. Too bad for us earthlings, Cayetano may not share the same view of power. And even if he does, his notion of power is a warped, twisted version that serves his aspirations more than those of the Filipino people. And despite what he’s done, he has the gall to insult our intelligence by claiming that he has the nation’s best interests in mind. If there’s anything we can learn from Cayetano, that would be new and more creative ways to cringe. Alan Peter Cayetano’s latest stunt suggests that while Alan Peter Cayetano may still love this country, Alan Peter Cayetano happens to love Alan Peter Cayetano more.
