Go extends help to 1K families affected by Sta. Cruz fire
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go personally led a relief operation on Wednesday, 24 May, for the victims of a devastating fire that ravaged a densely populated area in Sta. Cruz, Manila City. The fire which broke out on 15 May left two dead and affected more than a thousand families who are now in dire need of assistance. Held at the Manuel L. Quezon University basketball court, Go and his team distributed grocery packs, vitamins, masks, and shirts to 1,201 households. He likewise gave away bicycles, cellular phones, shoes, watches, and balls for basketball and volleyball to select recipients. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Go collaborated with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, which extended financial assistance to the affected families. Through his speech, the senator recognized the efforts of Manila City officials, led by Congressman Joel Chua, Mayor Honey Lacuna, and Vice Mayor Yul Nieto. Go also thanked officials present during the operation, including Barangay 310 Chairman Roland Gacula, Kagawad Roywilhelm Lim, Kagawad Rodelito Jurilla, Kagawad Romulo Balincongan, and Kagawad Ryan Lacsina, among others. “Marami pong nagtatanong sa akin kung bakit (ang isang) senador (ay) pumupunta sa mga nasunugan? Kahit saang sulok kayo ng Pilipinas, lindolin, bagyuhin, masunugan kayo, buhawi, pagputok ng bulkan basta kaya lang po ng aking katawan at panahon pupuntahan ko po kayo,” Go said. “Nandito ako para makatulong sa abot ng aking makakaya, mapakinggan ang inyong mga hinaing, maalalayan ang mga may sakit na kailangang magpagamot, makasuporta sa mga proyekto na makakapagpaunlad ng inyong komunidad, at makapag-iwan ng kaunting ngiti sa panahon ng inyong pagdadalamhati,” Go added. He likewise expressed his gratitude to former president Rodrigo Duterte for signing the Bureau of Fire Protection Modernization Act of 2021. The senator then reassured the Filipinos that the bureau will be more equipped in addressing and preventing fire-related situations. Under Republic Act No. 11589, which Go primarily authored and co-sponsored, the BFP is mandated to undergo a 10-year modernization program that includes acquiring and upgrading fire equipment, recruiting more fire personnel, and providing specialized training, among others. “Ang gamit po (ay) nabibili ‘yan, ang pera po kikitain natin ‘yan magtrabaho lang po tayo, magsipag lang tayo. Meanwhile, Go, who chairs the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, offered to help those in need of medical attention. The senator highlighted that there are five Malasakit Centers in the city where they may avail of medical assistance programs by the government. Principally authored and sponsored by Senator Go, Republic Act No. 11463, otherwise known as the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, mandates all hospitals administered and managed by the Department of Health nationwide and the Philippine General Hospital in Manila City to open their own Malasakit Centers. Other public hospitals may also establish their own centers provided they meet a standard set of criteria and guarantee the sustainability of their operations. The program has so far assisted over seven million Filipinos since its inception in 2018, according to the DOH. The Malasakit Centers are located at Tondo Medical Center, Philippine General Hospital, Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital, Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center, and in San Lazaro Hospital. In line with his efforts to bolster the health sector, Go mentioned that DOH has identified several barangays in the city where it will establish Super Health Centers, including Valeriano Fugoso, Barrio Magsaysay, Esperanza, and Maria Clara. Through the collective efforts of fellow lawmakers, sufficient funds had been allocated for 307 Super Health Centers in 2022 and 322 in 2023. DOH, the lead implementing agency, identifies the strategic areas where they will be constructed. Super Health Centers offer database management, out-patient, birthing, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray, ultrasound), pharmacy, and ambulatory surgical unit. Other available services are eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) service; oncology centers; physical therapy and rehabilitation center; and telemedicine, where remote diagnosis and treatment of patients will be done. Lastly, as Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, Go supported several projects in the city, including road improvements, the construction of a multipurpose building, and improvements of public buildings within the Department of Justice. How CHAD KINIS found purpose and ‘unexpected family’ in BEKS BATTALION
Last 5 May, three years after Covid-19 struck the world, the World Health Organization finally ended its global emergency status. Many lives were lost during the nightmare of Covid-19, but there were still beautiful stories and turning points that happened to people. Chad Kinis (real name Richardson de la Cruz) has one such story. At the presscon for his directorial debut The Beks Days of Our Lives on 5 May — the same day of WHO’s declaration — the standup comedian and vlogger became emotional as he recalled how, during the time of the pandemic, his life dramatically changed. It was his friendship with Lassy and MC Muah, his co-members in the comedy troupe Beks Battalion, that inspired the storyline and concept of his first-ever movie, he said. “Beks Battalion is an unexpected family. Hindi po namin inasahan na magiging matatag kaming magkasama bilang pamilya. Nagkaroon ako ng mga bagong kapatid sa kanila (We didn’t expect that we’d emerge strong as a family. I found new siblings in them),” Kinis said, becoming tearful. “Sa totoo lang po kasi, I’ve been so alone for decades. Mag-isa nagta-trabaho. Papasok ako sa comedy bar, then uuwi ako mag-isa (In truth, I’ve been alone for decades. I was working alone. It was in February 2020, a month before the country was put on Covid-19 lockdown, when Kinis formed Beks Battalion (now with over two million followers on YouTube). The trio began working hard to bring comedy online through their YouTube channel. Chad, Lassy and Muah have been long-time friends and stand-up comics before the group Beks Battalion was formed. In November 2020, still at the height of the pandemic, the trio showed a new house where the three of them decided to live together as a family. “Nung pandemic, nabuo ang Beks Battalion. Parang I found a new purpose,” Chad shared, wiping away tears. “Hindi lang po ako nagkaroon ng mga kapatid, kundi ng pamilya na gumagabay sa akin. Si Kuya Lassy, kahit pinakamatanda sa’min, parang naging bunso namin. Ang saya lang po ng buhay. Nagkaroon ako ng bagong direksyon sa kanila (I didn’t just get new siblings, but a family to guide me. Kuya Lassy is the oldest among us, but he also sort of became the youngest. Life has become happy. Pero hindi pa rin namin nakakalimutan yung pinaka-core ‘namin, yung comedy. So magugulat kayo sa ending nito, na hindi talaga siya tipikal na pelikula. Talagang may pa-surprise sa ending (We’re excited about this movie because it has heart. But we haven’t forgotten our core, which is comedy. For Tito, Vic and Joey, something didn’t sound right about being “retained” as hosts in “Eat Bulaga,” a show they nurtured from obscurity 43 years ago into the Pinoy pop culture giant that it is now. So to even mention that word in reference to the fate of the show – after its new breed of producers announced changes – could be particularly grating for the legendary trio. “Alam mo masagwang pakinggan sa amin yung mare-retain kami…para bang pwede kaming sipain, eh kami nga ang Eat Bulaga eh,” said former senator Tito Sotto. Finally, TVJ broke its silence about the drama behind the long-running noontime show. And what a resounding statement it made. “There are two ways to seek. (One is) leave it as it is. It’s doing well. Leave it alone,” Sotto said in an interview with GMA Network. “The other road is…di na tayo pwedeng magsama pagka ganun. That’s the other course.” But there is another issue he raised beyond the sentimental: Money. Sotto bared in the interview the reported P400 million revenue from political ads that “vanished.” “We were informed that a little over P400M of political ads that were placed to Eat Bulaga vanished,” he said. “I think you better ask TAPE (EB producer Television and Production Exponents), hayaan mong sila sumagot nun.” He also claimed that TAPE owes his brother, “bossing” Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon at least P30 million each. UST’s Imee Hernandez imposed her will in the middle in a rock-solid performance to power her team against Ateneo de Manila University on Saturday, 16 April in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament at the PhilSports Arena. Hernandez punished the Blue Eagles with quick attacks and provided solid defense for the Golden Tigresses with her blocking. When the dust settled, Hernandez notched a career-best 24 points on 19 attacks, three blocks, and two service aces as UST stopped Ateneo, 25-22, 25-20, 27-29, 25-21. Isa ngang insidente na naiulat ay ang ginawang pag-snatch sa cellphone ng isang French national na nagpapakita sa isang taxi driver ng address na kanyang pupuntahan. Nahuli na ang nasabing taxi driver na ayon sa pulis ay nagpalit pa umano ng mga marking ng sasakyan at ng plaka nito upang hindi matunton. Ang siste kasi, nakita ng mga imbestigador sa isang CCTV footage na nilapitan ng dalawang babae ang isang taxi para sumakay. Iniabot ng isang French national ang cellphone sa driver para ipakita ang address na kanilang bababaan. Pero sa halip na magpasakay, agad humarurot palayo ang taxi driver na tangay ang cellphone.
