SpaceX’s Starship to remain grounded after explosion probe
SpaceX's Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, must remain grounded while Elon Musk's company completes dozens of corrective actions to prevent a repeat of the spectacular explosion that marred its first orbital test flight, regulators said Friday. The 63 steps include "redesigns of vehicle hardware to prevent leaks and fires, redesign of the launch pad to increase its robustness," additional testing of safety systems, and more, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement after completing a months-long review. SpaceX blew up the uncrewed rocket four minutes after it blasted off from the company's Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, on 20 April. Starship experienced multiple engine failures and its first-stage booster did not separate from the spacecraft above it. The rocket disintegrated into a ball of fire that crashed into the Gulf of Mexico, while a cloud of dust floated over a small town several miles (kilometers) away. Musk immediately congratulated his SpaceX team on an "exciting" test launch and declared it a success because the company would gain valuable insights into what went wrong. The FAA however quickly launched an investigation, while conservation groups announced they would sue the regulator for not doing enough to protect the environment given the proximity of a vital habitat for protected species. Though the probe has now been completed, "the closure of the mishap investigation does not signal an immediate resumption of Starship launches at Boca Chica," said the agency. "SpaceX must implement all corrective actions that impact public safety and apply for and receive a license modification from the FAA that addresses all safety, environmental, and other applicable regulatory requirements prior to the next Starship launch" it added. A new Starship currently stands ready at the launchpad, according to publicity material posted by SpaceX on X, formerly known as Twitter. In a statement, the company reiterated its position that the first test "was a critical step in advancing the capabilities of the most powerful launch system ever developed" and "provided numerous lessons learned that are directly contributing to several upgrades being made" to the vehicle and ground structures. Starship, which stands 394 feet (120 meters) tall, produces 16.7 million pounds (74.3 Meganewtons) of thrust, more than double that of the Saturn V rockets used to send Apollo astronauts to the Moon. SpaceX foresees it as a next-generation, fully reusable spaceship that will eventually carry both crew and cargo to Mars. NASA has contracted a version of Starship to function as a lander craft for its Artemis program to return astronauts to the Moon by the middle of this decade. WHO warns of ‘concerning’ Covid trends ahead of winter
The World Health Organization on Wednesday warned of "concerning trends" for Covid-19 ahead of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, calling for increased vaccinations and surveillance. While data is limited because many countries have stopped reporting Covid data, the UN health agency estimated that hundreds of thousands of people around the world are currently hospitalized with the virus. "We continue to see concerning trends for Covid-19 ahead of the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told an online press conference. "Deaths are increasing in some parts of the Middle East and Asia, intensive care unit admissions are increasing in Europe and hospitalizations are increasing in several regions," he said. But only 43 countries -- less than a quarter of the 194 WHO member states --- are reporting Covid deaths to the agency, and only 20 provide information about hospitalizations, he added. "We estimate that there are hundreds of thousands of people in hospital now for Covid," said Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO's technical lead on Covid-19. "That is a worry given that when we get to colder months, in some countries, people tend to spend more time indoors together, and viruses that transmit through the air like Covid will take advantage of that," she added. With influenza and RSV also circulating, Van Kerkhove emphasized the importance of testing, as well as vaccination. Tedros said while there is not currently a single dominant Covid variant worldwide, the EG.5 Omicron subvariant is on the rise. Small numbers of the highly mutated BA.2.86 subvariant have also now been detected in 11 countries, Tedros said. The WHO is "monitoring this variant closely to assess its transmissibility and potential impact," he added. Preliminary data suggests that existing vaccines will give protection against BA.2.86, Van Kerkhove said. One of WHO's biggest concerns was how few at-risk people had recently received a Covid jab, Tedros said, calling for the vulnerable not to wait to get a booster dose. "The increase in hospitalisations and deaths shows that Covid-19 is here to stay, and that we will continue to need tools to fight it," Tedros said. Last week, the WHO announced that a global knowledge-sharing platform about Covid called C-TAP had secured three new licensing agreements to transfer vaccine technologies. Leyte inmates, personnel get jabbed
The Bureau of Corrections announced on Friday that the Leyte Regional Prison inmates totaling 148 persons and seven personnel of the Leyte Regional Prison had their bivalent Covid-19 booster vaccinations. It disclosed that the vaccinations were administered by doctors and medical personnel of the Department of Health Region VIII which sponsored the event. On the instruction of BuCor director general Gregorio Catapang Jr., the agency has been partnering with other agencies — specifically the DoH — to provide adequate services to guarantee the persons deprived of liberty’s “health and safety which are their rights as human beings.” Last May, at least 105 PDLs at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City had been infected with Covid-19. According to CT/SSupt. Ma. Cecilia Villanueva, BuCor officer-in-charge director general for reformation and director of the bureau’s Directorate for Health Services, the Covid-19 infections were most likely caused by visitors of PDLs.
