Celebrated Syrian author Khaled Khalifa dead at 59
Syrian writer and veteran government critic Khaled Khalifa has died of cardiac arrest at the age of 59 at his home in Damascus, a close friend told AFP. Khalifa, who hailed from Maryamin in northwestern Aleppo province, was celebrated for his novels, television screenplays, and newspaper columns, and honored with several of the Arab world's top literary awards. He "died in his home alone in Damascus" on Saturday, said journalist Yaroub Aleesa, who had spent time with the author during his final days. "We called him repeatedly and he didn't respond. When we went to his home, we found him dead on the sofa." Doctors at the Abbassiyyin Hospital in Damascus said the cause of death was a heart attack. Khalifa gained fame as a writer of several popular Syrian TV series in the early 1990s. He was known as a staunch opponent of the ruling Baath party and his columns criticizing the authorities. But despite his well-known stance, he chose to remain in the country after the 2011 civil war broke out with the repression of protests against the government. "I am staying because this is my country," he said in a 2019 interview. "I was born here, I live here and I want to die here!" His 2006 novel "In Praise of Hatred" was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arab Fiction -- often dubbed the Arab Booker Prize -- and was translated into six languages. The novel recounts the story of a young Syrian woman from Aleppo who escapes her sequestered life by joining a jihadist organization. In 2013, his novel "No Knives in the Kitchens of this City" won the Naguib Mahfouz Literature Prize, Egypt's top accolade for writers. It focuses on the lives of Syrians under the rule of the Baath party headed by President Bashar al-Assad. The writer's death sparked a wave of condolences on social media from fellow writers and members of Syria's exiled opposition. "Goodbye, you kind man," wrote Syrian writer and academic Salam Kawakibi. Khalifa was expected to be buried later on Sunday in Damascus, though details of the funeral had yet to be disclosed. Bystanders less likely to give women CPR — research
Bystanders are less likely to give life-saving CPR to women having a cardiac arrest in public than men, leading to more women dying from the common health emergency, researchers said Monday. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) combines mouth-to-mouth breathing and chest compressions to pump blood to the brain of people whose hearts have stopped beating, potentially staving off death until medical help arrives. In research to be presented at a medical conference in Spain this week, but which has not yet been peer-reviewed, a team of Canadian doctors sought to understand how bystanders administer the procedure differently to men and women. They looked at records of cardiac arrests that took place outside of hospitals in the United States and Canada between 2005 and 2015, which included nearly 40,000 patients. Overall, 54 percent of the patients received CPR from a bystander, the research said. For cardiac arrests in a public place, such as in the street, 61 percent of women were given CPR by a bystander -- compared to 68 percent of men. Alexis Cournoyer, an emergency physician at the Hopital du Sacre-Coeur de Montreal who conducted the research, told AFP that this gap "increases women's mortality following a cardiac arrest -- that's for sure". Cardiac arrests are a leading cause of death, with more than 350,000 occurring in the US alone every year, according to the American Heart Association. Only around 10 percent of people who have a sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital survive, research has shown. 'Barrier of recognition' The researchers sought to find a reason for the gender gap. One theory was that bystanders in public could be uncomfortable touching a woman's breast without consent, Cournoyer said. The researchers looked into whether age could play a role, he added. But it did not -- women were less likely to receive CPR than men from a bystander regardless of their age, the data showed. Cournoyer said another possibility was a "barrier of recognition" for women having a cardiac arrest, which is often represented as something that happens only to men. Before a cardiac arrest, men are more likely to have chest pain -- a commonly depicted symptom in media -- while women are more likely to experience shortness of breath, according to a study published last month in Lancet Digital Health. Cournoyer said further research was required to shed light on the gap between men and women, in particular involving data on the gender of those performing CPR. The research, which the team plans to publish in a peer-reviewed journal, will be presented at the European Emergency Medicine Congress 2023 in Barcelona. Bronny James’s cardiac arrest likely caused by heart defect say family
LeBron James's teenage son Bronny's cardiac arrest last month was likely caused by a congenital heart defect, the family said in a statement on Friday. Bronny James, 18, collapsed on the court while training with his University of Southern California basketball teammates in Los Angeles. He was rushed to hospital but was discharged a few days later. "After a comprehensive initial evaluation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center... the probable cause of Mr. James' sudden cardiac arrest has been identified. "It is an anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect which can and will be treated," said the statement. "We are very confident in Bronny’s full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future. We will continue to provide updates to media and respectfully reiterate the family’s request for privacy," the statement concluded. Bronny James committed to playing for the USC Trojans in May after becoming one of the top prospects in US high school basketball. He crowned an outstanding senior year campaign at the exclusive Sierra Canyon school in Los Angeles with 15 points in an all-star game of top college candidates, sinking five 3-pointers. His famous father -- the NBA's all-time leading scorer as well as a four-time NBA champion and four-time NBA Most Valuable Player -- has long spoken of his desire to extend his career in order to play in the league with his son. The statement comes days after LeBron and Bronny James accompanied rapper Drake to the stage during a concert at the Crypto.com Arena -- the same venue where the Lakers play -- then watched the show from VIP seats. Hamlin returns to NFL play seven months after cardiac arrest
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin returned to NFL competition in a pre-season game on Saturday, seven months after suffering a cardiac arrest after being hit during a game. The 25-year-old defensive back took part in his first on-field game action since being carted off the field in an ambulance in January, playing in the first quarter at home against Indianapolis. Hamlin helped make a tackle on a fourth down in a short-yardage situation. It was the completion of a comeback from an incident that took place last 2 January at Cincinnati when Hamlin tackled Bengals receiver Tee Higgins and seconds later collapsed on the field. Emergency medical workers restored his heartbeat on the field and he was taken to a nearby hospital, the game halted and never completed. Hamlin eventually recovered and was diagnosed as having been struck in the chest between heartbeats in a rare incident that stopped his heart. In April, the Bills announced that medical officials had given their approval for Hamlin to return to the NFL, something Hamlin said was his goal. He returned to the team for pre-season workouts and took part in Buffalo's first preseason contest against the Colts in hopes of making the team again for the upcoming campaign. Passenger dies in Romblon sea mishap
A female passenger of a pump boat died after suffering cardiac arrest while being rescued from a submerged vessel off Tabas Strait in Corcuera, Romblon on Saturday afternoon. Based on the initial report of the Philippine Coast Guard Substation Romblon, the distressed pump boat King Sto. Nino 7 submerged in the vicinity waters off Corcuera, Romblon at around 12:30 a.m. after leaving the Port of Calatrava for the Port of Corcuera. According to PCG Southern Tagalog District Commander Geronimo Tuvilla, 95 passengers including five crew members of the MB King Sto. Niño have been rescued. Most of the passengers of the ill-fated boat came from the Summer Youth Camp of the Four Square Gospel Church, according to Corcuera Mayor Elmer Fruelda. The fatality is reportedly a barangay treasurer. “Personnel of COP Corcuera and Coast Guard Sub-Station Calatrava immediately proceeded to the said location to conduct a search and rescue operation,” the PCG initial report said. In an interview with dzBB, Ret. Col. Roseller Muros, the head of Romblon PDRRMO, said MB King Sto. Niño 7 encountered a hole that caused it to capsize. “Medyo mataas ang alon lalo na sa kalagitnaan ng open sea at malakas din ang habagat, wala ding gale warning.” Muros added. The PCG ruled out overloading as the manifest shows 95 passengers out of the allowable 96 passengers. A thorough investigation is being conducted by the PCG. The Romblon mishap is the third maritime incident in the country after the Binangonan tragedy last 27 July that claimed 27 lives. LeBron James says family ‘safe, healthy’ after son suffers cardiac arrest
NBA superstar LeBron James said on Thursday his family was "together, safe and healthy" four days after his eldest son suffered cardiac arrest during practice with his college basketball team. "I want to thank the countless people sending my family love and prayers," the four-time NBA champion said in a social media post, his first since 18-year-old Bronny James collapsed on court while training with his University of Southern California teammates on Monday in Los Angeles. "We feel you and I’m so grateful," James wrote. "Everyone doing great. We have our family together, safe and healthy, and we feel your love. Will have more to say when we’re ready but I wanted to tell everyone how much your support has meant to all of us!" James's comments marked the first statement from the family since Tuesday, when they confirmed that Bronny James had been treated by medical staff on scene, hospitalized and moved from the Intensive Care Unit in "stable" condition. No new details emerged Wednesday, although LeBron James was spotted by photographers entering Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The TMZ.com celebrity news website reported that James was unconscious before being rushed to hospital following the cardiac incident. According to the American Heart Association, only about 1 in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, which occurs when the heart stops abruptly with little or no warning. James' cardiac arrest came just over a year after another USC basketball player, Vince Iwuchukwu, suffered heart failure and collapsed during an informal practice. Iwuchukwu subsequently made a full recovery. Bronny James committed to playing for the USC Trojans in May after becoming one of the top prospects in US high school basketball. He capped a stellar senior year campaign at the exclusive Sierra Canyon school in Los Angeles with 15 points in an all-star game of top college candidates, sinking five 3-pointers. Heat wave in US turns Texas prisons into ‘ovens’
On the afternoon of 4 July, as Americans were celebrating the country's independence with elaborate fireworks displays, a prisoner named Joseph Martire passed out in his cell in Texas, amid the excessive heat that has been swamping much of the southern United States in recent days. In concrete, brick, and metal penitentiaries, industrial fans churn warm vapor without really cooling the air. And with no air conditioning in most prisons, when outside temperatures exceed 40ºC (104 Fahrenheit), it can feel even hotter inside the cells. Some prisoners sabotage the toilets in their cells to make the water overflow and wet the floor, which they then sleep on. Others wet their clothes to try to stay cool, according to convicts, ex-convicts and family members who spoke to AFP. In recent weeks, 35-year-old Martire had four heat-related health episodes at Estelle Prison in Huntsville, where he has served 16 years. "I just passed out, the medical (staff) refused to see me and I don't know what to do," he told his family by phone. They called the prison administration to seek help. When other inmates sense that someone has passed out in a nearby cell, they yell to attract a guard's attention, but staff shortages often mean delays, Martire said. The stricken inmate is then taken to an administrative area of the jail that does have air conditioning for so-called "respite." Prisoners try to linger as long as possible. "I've already had too many issues with my health before from the heat," Martire said. Asked what the heat in the cells is like, Amite Dominick of the NGO Advocates for Texas Community Prisons replied: "The fastest way I can explain that is, go sit in your car on a triple-digit day. Bring a blow dryer with you. Crack your window a little bit." Brick oven The Texas Tribune news site reported that at least nine people had died in state prisons in June from heart attacks or other possibly heat-related causes. But Amanda Hernandez, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), which is in charge of prisons, said the last heat death occurred in 2012. In June, the department treated seven cases of people affected "beyond first aid," but there were no fatalities, she said. The department, which oversees 126,000 prisoners, said that 32 people died in June, from a variety of causes. Dominick took issue with that breakdown. "The coroner will usually report something like 'cardiac arrest' because heat stroke is highly correlated with cardiac arrest," she said. "We're seeing the same reports. We're seeing medical evidence for what happens to the body. "You know, during these types of temperatures, these are heat-related deaths," Dominick added. Sean Adams, 36, served time in a prison called the Clemens Unit, in the Texas city of Brazoria, but which inmates call "Burns Like Hell." "It's one of the older units that was made out of, you know, red bricks," Adams said. "And so red bricks are essentially what ovens are made out of." The prisons agency said inmates have access to ice and water and can go to air-conditioned rest areas when necessary. So inhumane Samantha, whose daughter is a 25-year-old inmate at the Lane Murray prison, said three prisoners died there in June from heat-related causes. "The way that they're treated is so inhumane," she said. "In the summer months, when you're inside, you see multiple heat-induced seizures every day," said Marci Marie Simmons, a 44-year-old ex-convict and activist. She said that in late June, a 36-year-old inmate died in the Estelle prison hours after speaking with her mother and complaining about the heat. "If we go and leave a kid or a human being or an animal in a vehicle, we're going to prison. But the state of Texas wants to cook our Texans," said Michelle Lively, whose partner Shawn McMahon, 49, is in Wynne prison. "And some of them are dying, and they have short, like, stupid drug charges and they have a death sentence because they can't handle the heat," she said. In leaks to the media, prison workers have also complained about their working conditions, including the heat. Dominick said legislative efforts to do something about the heat have fallen short, with bills demanding air conditioning in prisons withering in the conservative-majority Texas Senate. Meanwhile, the state recently spent over $750,000 to purchase several air-cooled units for a large swine breeding operation run partly by inmates, Dominick said. "And they don't have it for human beings." The post Heat wave in US turns Texas prisons into ‘ovens’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Do you need to take magnesium?
In my practice as a transplant nephrologist, many of my kidney transplant patients can have a deficiency in magnesium, due to medications that prevent their bodies from rejecting their new kidney. Magnesium is an important mineral in the body, helping with muscle, nerve and heart function, and in the production of energy. Magnesium also helps keep your bones strong and healthy. Having low levels of magnesium over a long period of time can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis. [caption id="attachment_134198" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of pexels/ polina tankilevitch | SOY milk is a good source of magnesium.[/caption] Low levels usually don’t cause any symptoms, but if this persists, early signs of magnesium deficiency include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and weakness. As magnesium deficiency worsens, numbness, tingling, cramps, seizures and abnormal heart rhythms can occur. Severe magnesium deficiency can lead to other mineral and electrolyte imbalances, such as low calcium and potassium levels. There some conditions that can also make patients prone to low magnesium levels. These include those with chronic diarrhea, prolonged use of proton pump inhibitors for heartburn (typically more than a year), heavy alcohol intake and diuretic use. Intake of certain medications for infections and cancer treatments can also cause magnesium levels to drop. [caption id="attachment_134196" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/chris vanhove | PUMPKIN seeds, which are high in magnesium, help lower blood pressure.[/caption] Before you reach for a magnesium supplement, you should know that if you have a balanced diet and are in generally good health, you likely do not have a deficiency in magnesium. You just have to take a few servings of magnesium-rich foods per day to get the amount you need. The Philippine recommended intake of magnesium for most adults is around 210 to milligrams per day. Good food sources are whole grains such as brown rice, whole wheat pasta and oats. For vegetables, green leafy ones such as kale, spinach, okra and chard are some examples, providing around 80 milligrams of magnesium per half a cup serving. Fruits include bananas, grapefruit, and avocados. Other magnesium rich foods include chickpeas, white beans, kidney beans, lentils, mixed nuts and sesame seeds, about 35 milligrams for half a cup. Eating a medium-sized potato with the skin can provide around 40 milligrams of magnesium. [caption id="attachment_134197" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/leigh skomal | SPINACH is rich in magnesium.[/caption] In healthy persons it is difficult to get too much magnesium from food because the kidneys eliminate the excess in the urine. However, high doses of magnesium from dietary supplements can result in diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps. Diarrhea is commonly reported with these forms of magnesium: magnesium carbonate, chloride, gluconate, and oxide. Magnesium supplements can also interact with other medications. If you take magnesium supplements take them at least two hours apart from other medications. Be careful when taking magnesium-containing laxatives and antacids. Very large doses of more than 5,000 milligrams/day of magnesium can cause magnesium toxicity and even death. Symptoms of magnesium toxicity can include nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, muscle weakness, difficulty breathing and an irregular heartbeat, and cardiac arrest. Patients with kidney problems or kidney failure are at high risk for this toxicity because their kidneys have lost the ability to get rid of the excess. When taken properly, supplements can help you stay healthy. But supplements taken unnecessarily or incorrectly can do more harm than good. If you suspect that you could have a low magnesium level, consult your doctor first. A simple lab test can check your levels, and your doctor can prescribe the amount that is right for you. Elvis Presley’s widow settles over late daughter’s will
Elvis Presley's widow Priscilla Presley has reached a settlement over their late daughter's fortune, her lawyer said Tuesday, after she had disputed an amendment removing her from the will. Lisa Marie Presley died suddenly in Los Angeles in January from cardiac arrest at the age of 54. Lisa Marie had initially named her mother Priscilla as a co-trustee of her estate, but an amendment in 2016 would have instead made her eldest daughter Riley Keough the beneficiary of her estate. Priscilla Presley filed a petition in January arguing the amendment was invalid because she was only presented with it after her daughter died, and it contained several technical errors, including lack of notarization. Her lawyer on Tuesday told a Los Angeles judge that a settlement had been reached. No details were disclosed, and the settlement is expected to remain sealed. "The families are happy," her attorney Ronson Shamoun said outside the courtroom, adding that all are "unified, together, and excited for the future." Keough's lawyer Justin Gold said his client was also happy with the resolution. Priscilla Presley, now 77, divorced Elvis in 1973 after six years of marriage. Lisa Marie was the only child of the rock and roll icon and retained control of her father's Graceland estate until her death. Riley Keough, 33, is an actor who has appeared in "Mad Max: Fury Road." Lisa Marie was also survived by teenage twin daughters Harper and Finley. The post Elvis Presley’s widow settles over late daughter’s will appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
K-pop star Moonbin dead at 25: music label
K-pop star Moonbin, a member of the boy band Astro, has died at the age of 25, his music label Fantagio announced Thursday. Local media, citing the police, reported that Moonbin had been found unresponsive on Wednesday evening in his apartment in the upscale Gangnam neighborhood of Seoul. "On April 19, Astro member Moon Bin unexpectedly left our world and became a star in the sky," said a statement posted in Korean early Thursday on Fantagio's official Twitter page. It did not provide any suspected cause of death. The statement asked that everyone "refrain from speculative and malicious reports" so that his family can pay their respects and honor him in peace. Moon Bin -- who performed as Moonbin -- was a member of the group Astro and also performed with a sub-group called Moonbin & Sanha. He joined the Fantagio label's trainee program at an early age and was an actor and model before debuting with Astro in February 2016. The group was originally six performers, but one member left in February 2023. Moonbin's sister Moon Sua is also a K-pop singer, performing as part of the girl group Billlie. "So sorry for the loss of one of the most beautiful souls I've meet through music! Prayers to his family and friends and employers and fans!" one user responded on Twitter to Fantagio's post. Several other young K-pop stars have died in recent years, including Goo Hara in November 2019. She had been abused by an ex-boyfriend who, after they split, blackmailed her over their sex videos. The suspected suicide occurred a month after her close friend, K-pop star Sulli, took her own life after a long struggle with online bullying, prompting demands in South Korea of stronger punishments for cybercrimes and abusive online comments. In 2018, 33-year-old Minwoo of boy band 100% died at home, with his label only saying he had suffered cardiac arrest. Just over three months earlier, the group SHINee's lead singer Jonghyun died by a suspected suicide. He was 27. K-pop stars are picked up by agencies at a young age -- usually in their early or mid teens -- and live under tight control, with their days taken over by grueling musical and dance training. South Korea has one of the world's highest rates of suicide which, according to recent government figures, is among the top causes of death for those under 40.
