Special twinbill: ‘Lungs’ and ‘Every Brilliant Thing’
Three years after it was abruptly halted by the Covid-19 pandemic, The Sandbox Collective returns with a twinbill show featuring Duncan Macmillan’s plays Every Brilliant Thing and Lungs. With Sandbox Festival 2023, patrons will have the opportunity to purchase a single, same-day ticket good for both shows. The shows will run one after the other, with a 20-minute interval in between. From 17 June to 15 July, the plays will run at the Zobel de Ayala Recital Hall, second floor of the Maybank Performing Arts Theater, 9th Avenue cor. 26th Street, BGC, Taguig City. The Sandbox Collective’s managing artistic director, Toff de Venecia, hopes that Sandbox Festival 2023 will give audiences a fresh perspective on how one experiences theater. Twinbills are not an entirely new concept in theater; however, spending three hours at the theater might be unfamiliar to some Manila theatergoers. “I’m very excited for the twinbill experience of Duncan Macmillan’s works, and see how these award-winning one-act plays will resonate with each other, adding to how the world has changed dramatically since we first staged them in 2018 and 2019, thereby impacting the audience’s overall experience and takeaway,” DeVenecia said. Interactive play Every Brilliant Thing is a one-act, interactive play that follows the story of a young child growing up with a parent suffering from mental illness. The show has been staged in multiple countries and has also been translated into different languages, such as Mandarin, Arabic, Spanish and Hebrew. Taking on the challenge once again in Every Brilliant Thing is actress, model and TV host Teresa Herrera, who will alternate performances with theater actress, multimedia host, entrepreneur and Gawad Buhay awardee Kakki Teodoro. For the 2019 run of Every Brilliant Thing, both Herrera and Teodoro picked up Gawad Buhay nominations for Outstanding Female Lead. Jenny Jamora, who directed all its previous runs, will once again step in as director. She, too, won Outstanding Stage Direction for a Play at the 12th Gawad Buhay Awards. Meanwhile, multimedia comedy artist and master impersonator Jon Santos will bring a Filipino-translated performance of Every Brilliant Thing to the local stage. Tasked with the play’s Filipino translation is award-winning playwright, translator, actor and director Guelan Luarca, the recipient of the 2022 Gawad Rolando Tinio Translator’s Prize by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. Changed world In March 2020, Lungs was set to be staged, and the actors and The Sandbox Collective’s creative team sought to answer the topical questions, “What world are we leaving the future generations?” and “Even if I wanted children, with everything going on around us, what kind of world would I be leaving them?” Three years down the road, the world has changed in exactly the way the play’s characters feared. On the heels of those questions comes a new one, brought on by the current state of our society: What does it mean to stage a play with characters so fearful of a far-off future in our present time, now that so many of those fears have come true in the real world? Lungs received seven Gawad Buhay nominations during its original 2018 run, including Female Lead Performance in a Play for returning cast member Sab Jose. For this festival, Jose will be joined by Gawad Buhay-nominated theater actor Reb Atadero, who was last seen in Breakups & Breakdowns and Ang Huling El Bimbo. [caption id="attachment_137900" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Sab Jose, Brian Sy, Justine Peña and Reb Atadero.[/caption] The 2023 run will also welcome theater actors Brian Sy and Justine Peña as they step into the shoes of Lungs’ anxiety-ridden characters. Peña’s performance in Uncle Jane earlier this year was lauded by critics and theatergoers alike, while Sy’s turn in Coriolano garnered him a Gawad Buhay Award for Best Male Featured Performance in 2020. Serving as the show’s assistant director in 2018 and 2020, Gawad Buhay awardee Caisa Borromeo now takes the reins as director for Lungs. Surfing haven that is Siargao
Surfing is what Siargao is all about. The water sport is a year-round activity at the island, with locals and expats trooping to Siargao to experience the water’s swells and waves. Surfing spots are easily accessible in Siargao, with Cloud 9 as its best. The famous surfing break, located in the municipality of General Luna, was dubbed by CNNGo (the travel site of CNN International) as one of the World’s Best Surfing Spots. Its prime waves happen from September to November. Herbert Bautista on graft case: ‘Not guilty, politically motivated’
Former Quezon City mayor Herbert Bautista pleaded not guilty to graft charges he and his former city administrator Aldrin Cuña are facing before the Sandiganbayan Seventh Division, at their arraignment yesterday morning. Bautista called the charges "politically motivated." “Not guilty po tayo. (This is) politically motivated. The case was filed against me by the Quezon City government,” Bautista said after the arraignment. But he refused to say who is behind the filing of the case against him. “Kayo na bahala roon (It's up to you.),” he said. The graft case was in connection with the alleged anomalous computerization project worth P32 million that the two former city officials awarded to Geodata Solutions for an Online Occupational Permitting and Tracking System, despite the absence of a specific appropriation approved by the city council. The case was filed by the Ombudsman, which accused them of exercising "partiality" in awarding the contract. Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte reiterated this point to the Daily Tribune. “Ombudsman po ang nag-file ng case sa Sandiganbayan, hindi po QC government (It was the Ombudsman that filed the case with the Sandiganbayan, not the QC government),” Belmonte said. Enrico Mira, Jr., counsel for Cuña, tried to defer the arraignment by telling the graft court that they had filed a Motion to Quash a day before, but the Sandiganbayan denied the appeal, since Cuña failed to serve the prosecution a copy of the said pleading ahead of the arraignment date in violation of the Rules of Court. Associate Justice Theresa Gomez-Estoesta, the Division chairperson, immediately ruled that "Section 13 of the Rules of Court is clear. The motion is denied outright." She ordered that the pre-trial conference should commence, with both the prosecution and defense agreeing to the existence, due execution and authenticity of documents related to the Geodata contract such as Bids and Awards Committee Resolution, Notice of Award and delivery receipts, among others. Bautista also told reporters that he had served his city well, starting from the Kabatang Barangay (now Sangguinang Kabataan or SK) and becoming an honorary council member as youth representative, then vice mayor and finally mayor until his term ended in 2019. "I devoted myself to Quezon City for 34 years, and then because of politics, we have this (case),” Bautista said. BCDA sole government agency to win Gold Quill award
Of the 395 entries worldwide, the Bases Conversion and Development Authority is the only Philippine government agency that bagged the most coveted 2023 Gold Quill Award of Excellence for its innovative annual report publications in the past three years. By pushing innovation to improve public’s access to information as well as telling stories behind financial data and technical reports to make it more appealing to its audiences, the “One Nation, One Legacy” BCDA annual report series from 2019 to 2021 met the high standards of the International Association of Business Communicators’ Seven-point Scale of Excellence, taking home the Gold Quill Award of Excellence in Publications. “This is not an ordinary feat for the Philippine government. At a time where many people and organizations were overwhelmed, this recognition demonstrates how important impactful, innovative and clear communication is to its stakeholders. We are humbled by this award that puts BCDA among the ranks of the best communicators in the world. Our vow is to continue setting the bar by reporting accurate financial and operational performances that are accessible and engaging to the public,” said BCDA president and chief executive officer Aileen R. Zosa. Deviating from traditional government reports, BCDA’s “One Nation, One Legacy” series went beyond the usual financial statements by including human interest stories and eye-catching infographics and visuals anchored on corporate governance, business development, project management, and corporate social responsibility initiatives to communicate BCDA’s role as a catalyst of national growth and provider of economic opportunities for Filipinos. “We Win As One” (2019) featured New Clark City’s world-class sports complex completed in record time for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. “We Heal As One'' (2020) focused on BCDA’s role in the whole-of-nation approach in dealing with the pandemic. And lastly, “We Build As One” (2021) highlighted how BCDA exercised political will amid a crippling health crisis to push for the completion of big-ticket infrastructure projects, such as the Clark International Airport terminal. For more than 40 years, IABC’s Gold Quill Awards have recognized and awarded excellence in strategic communication worldwide. The Gold Quill Awards honor the dedication, innovation and passion of communicators on a global scale with a focus on achieving solid business outcomes. Since 2008, more than 5,000 projects have been entered in the Gold Quill Awards. The IABC Gold Quill Awards program recognizes business communication excellence globally, and is acknowledged as one of the most prestigious awards programs in the industry. The BCDA won the award for its innovative storytelling and creative design in the highly prestigious award. The “One Nation, One Legacy” BCDA annual report series from 2019 to 2021 was awarded the Gold Stevie Award for Innovation in Annual Reports. Meanwhile, the annual report of “We Build As One” garnered the Gold Stevie Award for Innovation in Government Publications. According to BCDA president and chief executive officer Aileen R. The local government of Marikina City was awarded by the Department of the Interior and Local Government with the “Mark of Recognition” for passing the 2022 Good Financial Housekeeping assessment. The agency also awarded the city with a P100,000 check for being the third place among 17 local government units in Metro Manila in the implementation of the Manila Bay Clean-up, Rehabilitation and Preservation Program. Marikina was also commended as the “Most Improved LGU” for the year 2022, according to DILG-Marikina Director Mary Jane Nacario. Mayor Marcelino Teodoro and his wife — Marikina First District Representative Marjorie Ann Teodoro received the awards during the celebration of the city’s 393rd Foundation Anniversary on Monday, 17 April. According to Nacario, the GFH was bestowed to Marikina for its financial transparency and accountability and instituted public reporting of the budget and expenditure of the city government. The DILG-Marikina said the P100,000 reward will be utilized by the city government to maintain order and cleanliness in Marikina. ‘We are more than enough’: KaladKaren dedicates historic win to LGBTQ+ community
Comedian, television host and actress KaladKaren, whose real name is Jervi Li, was declared the winner in the Best Supporting Actress category of the first Summer Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) during the Gabi ng Parangal, held on 11 April at the New Frontier Theater in Cubao, Quezon City. She bested co-nominees Ana Abad Santos of Love You Long Time and Maris Racal of Here Comes the Groom. She made history by becoming the first transgender person to win an acting award at the MMFF for her role in Here Comes the Groom, which won Third Best Picture. She is the second trans person to win an acting award in Philippine cinema. “Alam niyo po, itong parangal na ito ay hindi lamang recognition ng aking trabaho kundi pati na rin po ng aking pagkatao (You know, this award is not just a recognition of my work but also of my identity) When I entered show business, I never thought na makakakuha po ako ng award kasi (that I would receive an award because) as transgender woman, I thought I will never be enough,” she said in her emotional acceptance speech. KaladKaren continued: “Kaya napakahalaga po nitong award na ito para sa akin (That’s why this award is very important to me), and I want to share this to all transgender people, drag artists, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, whose lives and existence are being threatened in the world right now, para sa inyong lahat po ‘to (this is for all of you). And I want to remind all of you that we are more than enough.” The actress expressed her gratitude to the Summer MMFF board of jurors, which was headed by Golden Globe- and BAFTA-nominated actress Dolly de Leon, and included filmmaker Jose Javier Reyes, saying that “it only goes to show that there is diversity, inclusion, and equity in Philippine cinema.” She also thanked the film’s writer and director Chris Martinez and Quantum Films producer Joji Alonso for “this chance and thank you for hiring a transgender actress to play a transgender character. Thank you for being truthful.” [caption id="attachment_119814" align="aligncenter" width="525"] KaladKaren wins Best Supporting Actress for ‘Here Comes the Groom’ at the first summer MMFF Awards.[/caption] In Philippine showbusiness, LGBTQ+ characters are often played by straight actors. This practice has taken away opportunities from LGBTQ+ actors, who have been relegated to sidekick roles and providing comedic reliefs. KaladKaren also thanked her co-actors including Iyah Mina, the first trans person to win an acting award, when she won Best Actress at the 2018 Cinema One Originals Film Festival for her work in Mamu; And a Mother Too. Mina was nominated at the Gawad Urian in the Best Actress category in 2019. “Thank you rin po sa mga role models ko sa (to my role models in the) industry — Ma’am Karen Davila, if not because of your support I don’t think KaladKaren would fly,” she further said. “And to Meme Vice Ganda, thank you for opening so many doors for us so we can enter. You’re one of the reasons why I’m here tonight.” KaladKaren also acknowledged her fiancé, British seafarer Luke Wrightson: “And to the love of my life, Luke, kung nasaan ka man (wherever you are), for 11 years, you have showed me and you have made me feel that I am more than enough. I love you from the bottom of my heart. He’s my husband-to-be. Ang suwerte niya, noh? (He’s so lucky, right?)” The last part of her speech addressed the children and the youth: “Lahat ng mga batang nangangarap, sa mga LGBTQIA+ na kids, mga batang beki, ‘wag kayong matakot maging kayo at ‘wag kayong matakot mangarap because one day, hindi niyo alam, kayo rin ang nandirito. At sana ‘wag po nating kalimutan ang mensahe ng aming pelikula: Hindi po ang itsura at kasarian ang mahalaga kundi ang inyong puso at kaluluwa (To the kids who are dreaming, to the LGBTQIA+ kids, do not be afraid to be yourselves and to dream because one day, who knows, you would also be the one standing here. And I hope we also remember the message of our film: What’s important is not your appearance or your gender, but your heart and soul).” The LGBTQ+ community also celebrated KaladKaren’s win. Trans activist Mela Franco Habijan wrote on her social media accounts: “Our dearest KaladKaren winning Best Supporting Actress is a beautiful exclamation point for the trans community! It is a huge win for the LGBTQIA+ community! You are power, mars! Congratulations and we are proud of you!” Trans filmmaker Rod Singh, the director of Mamu; And a Mother Too, expressed delight when KaladKaren was nominated, writing on Twitter (@iamrodafrog), “This is a feat! Regardless if Jervi wins or not, this is already a win for the community! A step to the right direction. Magiging precedent din ito (This will be a precendent) for future MMFF! Which means we also have to stand our ground.” The University of the Philippines’ College of Mass Communication also congratulated KaladKaren on its official Facebook page. The actress studied at the university and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Broadcast Communication in 2009. KaladKaren rose to prominence by impersonating broadcast journalist Karen Davila Her screen name is a portmanteau of Karen and the Filipino word “kaladkarin,” meaning “easy to get tagged along,” which can imply being “loose.” She has hosted several television shows such as Umagang Kay Ganda, I Can See Your Voice and The Voice of the Philippines. Last year, she was a regular judge in the first season of Drag Race Philippines. KaladKaren played Wilhemina in Here Comes the Groom, the sequel of the 2010 film Here Comes the Bride, with a plot of souls being “swapped” in an accident during a solar eclipse. It stars Enchong Dee, Racal, Best Supporting Actor winner Keempee de Leon, Awra Briguela, Gladys Reyes, Miles Ocampo, and Xilhouete. The Summer MMFF ran from 8 to 18 April.
