The solitary kidney
In recent news, a basketball player had to have his kidney removed after sustaining an injury during a game. While unfortunate to lose a kidney, most people with just one kidney can live healthy, normal lives. There are four main causes of this condition, known as a solitary kidney: 1. Birth defects. Some people can be born with only one kidney, or with two kidneys, but with only one that functions properly. 2. Surgical removal. A kidney may be removed due to severe trauma after an accident (as in the case of the basketball player), a tumor (whether benign or cancer), kidney stones or a severe infection. 3. Kidney donation. Persons who donate a kidney to be transplanted into a family member or friend whose kidneys have failed should have two healthy kidneys. 4. Kidney transplant recipients. Recipients of the kidney transplant have native kidneys that do not work properly and will have only one functioning kidney after the transplant. A solitary kidney may be able to compensate and increase function as well as two healthy kidneys, like having one person doing the job of two people. However, injury to a solitary kidney can cause kidney failure to happen more quickly, making treatment more urgent and needing closer monitoring. Individuals with one kidney may have a slightly increased risk of developing high blood pressure and this can damage blood vessels in the kidneys, reducing their ability to work correctly. You should have your blood pressure monitored at least twice a year and if high blood pressure is present, your blood pressure should be controlled to less than 130/80 mmHg. Having a single kidney has historically been considered a disqualifying condition for contact sports like football, basketball, martial arts, boxing and soccer. Over the years, however, it has been shown that it is reasonable to allow individuals with a single kidney to participate in contact sports, after discussion of the potential risks. Wearing protective gear such as padded vests can help protect the kidney from injury during sports. This can help lessen the risk, but remember that it won’t take away the risk. Here are some tips on how to take care of a solitary kidney. Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese can overtax the ability of one kidney to function properly. Eat a balanced diet. Have a healthy, balanced diet low in salt, sugar and processed foods. Include fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains in your diet. Stay hydrated. Drink enough water to maintain good kidney function. Proper hydration also helps prevent kidney stones. Monitor your blood pressure. You should keep your blood pressure within a healthy range because high blood pressure can put extra stress on your kidney. Limit alcohol and caffeine. Don’t smoke. [caption id="attachment_181177" align="aligncenter" width="1706"] Photograph courtesy of Pexels/Cottonbro StudioDon’t smoke.[/caption] Be careful with pain relievers. Long-term use or excessive dosage of medications like ibuprofen, mefenamic acid and etoricoxib can harm the kidneys. Take these medicines only as prescribed by your doctor. Medication awareness. Inform your healthcare provider about your solitary kidney when discussing medications, as some drugs can be hard on the kidneys. They can adjust prescriptions accordingly. Exercise. Engaging in regular physical activity to promote overall well-being is still a good idea, but take precautions to protect your kidney. Regular check-ups. See your doctor regularly to monitor your kidney function and provide guidance on managing your health. Periodic blood and urine tests can help to detect any issues early so that they can be managed right away. Treat bladder and kidney infections. If you have any signs of urinary tract infection, such as pain on urination, frequent urination and fever, seek medical help immediately to get the proper treatment. Educate yourself. Learn about your condition and follow your doctor’s advice. Being well-informed about your health can help you make better choices Yes, you can live with one kidney. Together with the guidance of your physician, regular monitoring and a healthy lifestyle, you can help ensure the optimal function of your solitary kidney. Disability Benefits
Dear Atty. Joji, My father sustained a back injury due to the heavy lifting involved in his current job. In his recent check-up, he received advice to refrain from heavy lifting to prevent further aggravation of the injury. In this situation, Atty., would he be eligible for compensation considering that his injury resulted from the nature of his job? Javier Dear Javier, Disability benefits are granted to an employee who sustains an injury or contracts a sickness resulting in temporary total, permanent total, or permanent partial, disability. For the injury and the resulting disability to be compensable, they must have necessarily resulted from an injury or accident arising out of and in the course of employment. Citing the case of Iloilo Dock & Engineering Co. v Workmen’s Compensation Commission, the Court explained the phrase “arising out of and in the course of employment” in this wise: The two components of the coverage formula — “arising out of” and “in the course of employment” — are said to be separate tests that must be independently satisfied; however, it should not be forgotten that the basic concept of compensation coverage is unitary, not dual, and is best expressed in the word, “work-connection, because an uncompromising insistence on an independent application of each of the two portions of the test can, in certain cases, exclude clearly work-connected injuries.” The words “arising out of” refer to the origin or cause of the accident, and are descriptive of its character, while the words “in the course of” refer to the time, place and circumstances under which the accident takes place. As a matter of general proposition, an injury or accident is said to arise “in the course of employment” when it takes place within the period of the employment, at a place where the employee may reasonably... be, and while he is fulfilling his duties or is engaged in doing something incidental thereto. Thus, for injury to be compensable, the standard of “work connection” must be substantially satisfied. The injury and the resulting disability sustained by reason of employment are compensable regardless of the place where the injured occurred, if it can be proven that at the time of the injury, the employee was acting within the purview of his or her employment and performing an act reasonably necessary or incidental thereto. Hope this helps. Atty. Joji Alonso The post Disability Benefits appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Tulfo wants PGC, MARINA officials probed for Binangonan boat mishap
Senator Raffy Tulfo on Monday filed a resolution seeking an investigation of officials of the Philippine Coast Guard and the Maritime Industry Authority for possible negligence that led to the deaths of 27 passengers after the motorbanca Princess Aya capsized off Binangonan, Rizal on 27 July. Tulfo's Senate Resolution No. 705 seeks to investigate “the factors contributing to the capsizing of the boat and identify lapses in safety protocols or negligence of PCG, MARINA, and other concerned individuals and agencies that may have led to this unfortunate incident.” In filing the resolution, Tulfo stressed that high-ranking officials of the PCG and MARINA who are guilty of "neglect of duty" must become accountable “in the name of command responsibility." “In most cases, a sunken ship or boat's crew members are often the ones punished and sent to jail,” Tulfo lamented. He then noted that the M/B Princess Aya tragedy would have not happened if the PCG and MARINA had properly performed "their duties and responsibilities.” “PCG and MARINA are the relevant government authorities responsible for overseeing and regulating maritime safety in the country,” he said. Citing reports on the incident, Tulfo said MARINA failed to check the “seaworthiness” of Princess Aya before allowing it to sail. Following the boat accident, MARINA suspended the safety certificate of the M/B Princess Aya Express. But Tulfo said the issuance of a “Passenger Ship Certificate” should have been strictly implemented in the first place. In the latest investigation report by the PCG Incident Command, the boat was allowed to sail with a capacity of 30 passengers based on the manifest list, but 70 individuals were actually on board the boat before the incident happened. Authorities found out that there were insufficient life vests for passengers while the boat was also facing inclement weather conditions. Tulfo said the PCG inspector, assigned to check boats at the dock site before sailing, failed to flag such issues. Citing a comment from a sea expert, Tulfo said the M/B Princess Aya’s beam “was not properly and appropriately designed to support more than 30 passengers.” “There’s a need for MARINA to properly inspect, along with a marine engineer, all boats being rented or use for public water transportation before issuing any permit to operate moving forward,” Tulfo stressed. Meanwhile, Tulfo said the results of the investigation over the incident “should be utilized to improve safety standards for marine vessels, addressing issues such as overloading, vessel stability, adherence to passenger capacity limits, emergency preparedness and crew training.” The results of the inquiry, he added, could be useful for the government in reviewing and enhancing existing legislation on maritime regulations. Tulfo is likewise eyeing to craft a bill that would further exact accountability from the PCG and MARINA officers should maritime accidents occur due to negligence. “This would assure that the PCG and MARINA officers, along with their supervisors, will face charges and jail time every time a ship or a boat capsizes due to their negligence,” he added. Toyota, Lalamove strike a deal
Toyota Motor Philippines, one of the leading mobility companies in the country, is joining forces with top-tier logistics firm Lalamove and its automotive division, Lalamove Automotive. The thrust of the collaboration is the introduction of the robust and efficient Toyota Lite Ace as a new transport partner to the commercial fleet. This initiative has been set in motion with the view to equip both aspiring and established Lalamove operators with the Lite Ace Panel Van variant, which will be available for purchase through Lalamove Automotive's Vehicle Ownership Program. The partnership underscores the commitment to bolster the ever-growing mobility demands of micro, small and medium enterprises. TMP is stepping up to the plate to address this need through a new, economically viable pricing scheme for the Lite Ace, offered via Toyota Taytay, Rizal and Toyota Financial Services Philippines. This concerted effort has resulted in an alliance with Lalamove to present this cost-effective pricing as an attractive proposition for partner operators, which can serve to enhance their transport and delivery services substantially. The strategic partnership was announced to both existing and potential operators during the TTR-Lalamove Automotive Business Roadshow in March. It shed light on the opportunity to leverage the capabilities of the Lite Ace as a logistics ally, geared towards the transport of goods and services for Lalamove's customers. The Lite Ace's Panel Van variant, in particular, offers a redesigned compact body and a highly efficient engine, ensuring a generous payload capacity for Lalamove vehicles. Clients can, therefore, trust the services booked through the Lalamove app, confident in the quality, durability, and reliability synonymous with the Toyota brand. Zellyn Lim, president of Toyota Taytay, Rizal, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration: “We are very happy and excited that Toyota Taytay, Rizal is part of this partnership with Lalamove Automotive, Toyota Financial Services and Toyota Motor Philippines. “We are privileged to assist our customers in enhancing their quality of life by expanding access through financing. By helping them acquire reliable Toyota mobility vehicles for their business, we hope to benefit more and more customers, leading to better livelihoods for more Filipinos and a stronger Philippine economy." In a drive to support the entrepreneurial aspirations of Filipinos, a series of caravans is being launched by TTR and Lalamove Automotive to connect with a larger pool of potential operators. Under the program, every Lite Ace purchase comes with comprehensive accident and repair coverage by Toyota Insure, plus a free Periodic Maintenance Service from the initial one kilometer until the 40km check-up. Plans are afoot to enhance this collaboration by potentially introducing vehicles from T-SURE, Toyota's Quality Pre-Owned Cars program, into the Lalamove operations. This move further testifies to the strength of the partnership and the mutual commitment to optimize operational capabilities. The Toyota Lite Ace, with its affordable price, easy operation and maintenance, is designed to become the go-to business partner for Filipino MSMEs. Whether it's the Panel Van, Pickup, Cargo or FX variant, the Lite Ace offers high efficiency, flexible load capacity, and low fuel consumption, enabling drivers and businesses to optimize their journeys and maximize savings. Rider killed in EDSA Shaw mishap
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Task Force Special Operations head, Col. Edison Nebrija on Wednesday confirmed the death of a motorcycle rider in a hit-and-run incident at the underpass of the MRT-Shaw Boulevard Station in Mandaluyong City. In an interview with Daily Tribune’s online morning show Gising Na!, Nebrija said the body of the victim was severely injured due to the strong impact when he was allegedly hit by a speeding vehicle in the said area. The MMDA withheld the identity of the victim as it has to yet to inform his relatives about the incident which also caused heavy traffic along EDSA-Kamuning in Quezon City on Wednesday morning because it was aggravated by a vehicular accident in Mandaluyong. The MMDA also said that the incident had no witnesses and its personnel will check on the CCTV footages in the area to determine what really happened. The agency also temporarily closed the southbound lane of EDSA Shaw for almost three hours from 5:30 a.m. due to the accident, which slowed traffic in major thoroughfares in the metro. Nebrija said the MMDA opted to close down the tunnel because of the incident while investigation was ongoing. “In any accidents, it will take time for us to clear up the area because they could not touch the victim and its surroundings until the Scene of the Crime Operatives arrive,” he added. With the conduct of the investigation, the personnel from SOCO could determine who was at fault since the rider was already dead. “In other instances — for example, the victim is injured and alive we will send it to the hospital for treatment once the ambulance arrived then the police will be the one to investigate to determine what happened, so that there are insurance claims that they need to do or to make a police report,” Nebrija said. He added that in such accidents, there are people who are merely watching and there those who are concerned to the victims and want to help and sometimes they are the cause of convergence. These 19 fresh Kapuso teens are ready to sparkle
The “betting” must be on now. Who among the 19 Sparkle Teens of Kapuso network will make it as the biggest star in, say, two to five years? Would having a foreign surname with mestiza or meztizo looks help? After all, our two Miss Universe title holders — Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray — have them. On film and TV, Anne Curtis is it. And Gerald Anderson, as well as Alden Richards. Maybe if James Reid didn’t quit Viva management, he would be “it,” too! Or if Sam Milby mastered Filipino/Tagalog and turned on a more vibrant personality. How do you relate to the Caucasian names Waynona Collings, Charlie Fleming (yes, this Charlie is a girl, like Kapamilya’s Charlie Dizon), Selina Griffin, James Graham and Josh Ford? Do check out their pics on the GMA 7 website. There’s a young man among the Sparkle Teens who go by the name of John Clifford, but it’s a coined name for the guy whose social media pics are under the name Clifford Gawchua, though he has also begun posting pics as John Clifford. The Chinese “chua” in his surname manifests in his handsome Asian looks. A girl in the stunning bundle of lookers goes by the name of Gaea Mischa. Her first name refers to the Greek goddess of Earth. Google says Mischa is a name of Russian and Hebrew origins that means “honey” and “whom God loves.” A Google search also reveals that she’s Gaea Mischa S. Salipot, a student of the International British Academy in Cavite (which also offers home schooling) who became a 2018 Champion of the World Division Winner in California, USA. Gaea Mischa was also a finalist under Team Lea of The Voice Kids PH Season 4 in 2019. She is quite morena and inarguably pretty. [caption id="attachment_122358" align="aligncenter" width="712"] GMA Network’s Sparkle Teens of 2023.[/caption] There’s a young man by the name of Lee Victor, and Internet data about him says he is “half-Welsh and half-Filipino.” And there’s a girl by the name of Naomi Park who introduced herself at the media launch at Novotel in Cubao, QC, last Tuesday afternoon, 18 April, as “ang K-pop girl ng Sparkle Teens.” With very fair complexion, Naomi does look Korean. The other members of Sparkle Teens are Zyren dela Cruz, Brice Eusebio, Aya Domingo, Liana Mae, Marco Masa, Princess Aliyah, Ashley Sarmiento, Keisha Serna, Aidan Veneracion and Antonio Vinson. Handpicked They are 10 young women and nine young men. Their number by gender should have been equal, but Andrei Sison died in a car accident a few days ago and Sparkle management decided not to replace him. There’s inside talk at the Kapuso network that Mr. M (Johnny Manahan, formerly of ABS-CBN and founder of Star Magic, the disenfranchised network’s much-admired talent discovery and management division) handpicked all 20 of them. It was Mr. M who saw to it that all 20 undergo a long stretch of training in acting, dancing, singing, public speaking and other disciplines meant to develop their personalities for public exposure. At their launch, acting was the only thing the 19 Sparkles did not showcase. They were all impressive. No one was a laggard. Some talked very engagingly during the group interviews. Three females may be said to have been given a special showcase by belting out a rousing song, joined by the others later. They were Princess Aliyah, Selina Griffin and Gaea Mischa. Princess Aliyah is dubbed “ang Biritera ng Sparkle Teens.” Gaea Mischa is billed as “ang Stunning Diva ng Sparkle Teens.” Griffin is presented as “ang ballerina at classical singer” of the group. Stardom According to GMA 7 assistant vice president Joy Marcelo, all 19 will perform regularly on the network’s weekly musical variety show All-Out Sundays. Some have also been cast in forthcoming drama shows. “They can’t be cast all at the same time,” said Marcelo, even as their original managers surely hope the casting will happen in 2023. The original managers, who are usually the discoverers of these 19, are now considered co-managers since all 19 are on a management contact with the network’s talent development and management center known as Sparkle, a name believed to have been coined by Mr. M who is acknowledged to have come up with “Star Magic” for ABS-CBN. “Executable” or “demonstratable” talent is just one element of big-time stardom. There are others, such as perseverance, a sense of professionalism, congeniality with the biggies of management, and the so-called X factor or “mystique” of stardom, which Mr. M is acknowledged to be very good at recognizing. Showbiz names may contribute to one’s X factor — being the son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter, niece or nephew of a well-loved established star. Antonio Vinzon, for instance, is character actor Roi Vinzon’s son. Some girls are taller than the others. Same is true among the boys. The degree of beauty or handsomeness depends on the looker. And so does the intensity of one’s appeal, smile or swagger. Ultimately, the multitude is the endower of big-time stardom. Sparkle members somehow have to compete among themselves since they may be asked to audition for the same roles in separate “readings” of specific scenes with the show director, or on a day assigned for “resident” stars to audition.
