P51-B airport railway launched

Project to generate 38,000 jobs The country’s first airport railway express service soon starts construction after the government and proponents signed the P50.8-billion contract packages for PNR Clark Phase 2 (Malolos-Clark) segment of the P777.5-billion North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) virtually over the weekend  (August 1, 2020). The construction is expected to generate 38,000 new local jobs in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade led the virtual signing of the contracts, marking the start of civil works for the 53-km extension that will bring passengers from Makati City in Metro Manila to Clark International Airport in Pampanga in just under one  hour. The first signing was for the P32.7-billion Contract Package N-04, which covers the civil engineering and building works  6.3 kilometers of the main line and 1.6 kilometers of the depot’s access line with an underground station serving Clark International Airport. They also signed the P18.1-billion Contract Package N-05, which covers the civil engineering and building works for the Clark Railway Depot.  The depot covers an overall area of approximately 33 hectares.  The contract covers the construction of the Operations Control Center, stabling yard, workshops, training center and other ancillary buildings in Mabalacat, Pampanga. This proves that flagship projects under the government’s BUILD, BUILD, BUILD program continue despite challenges posed by the pandemic, Tugade underscored. The PNR Clark Phase 2 paves the way for the country’s first-ever airport railway express service, he reiterated. “Since the NSCR will feature the country’s first airport express train service allowing travelers to get from Makati to Clark Airport in under one hour, we can consider it as a trail-blazing project, ” the DOTr Secretary  elaborated. “To achieve this, trains will run at 160 kilometers per hour, making it one of the fastest modes of land public transportation.”  The signing of contracts is likewise timely, noted Asian Development Bank (ADB) Southeast Asia Director General Ramesh Subramaniam. “The civil works contracts will help kickstart the economic revival of the Philippines over the next 12 months as the country faces the pandemic ” he pointed out. Under the railway project, we estimate that 24,000 local construction jobs will be directly created during the next three years.  And another at least 14,000 jobs needed for operating the railway system,” according to Subramaniam. The signing of contracts is a major milestone for the Malolos-Clark Railway Project as well as for the Philippine transport sector, he added. Once partially operational by 2022, PNR Clark Phase 2 (Malolos-Clark), a 53-km rail line segment, will connect Malolos, Bulacan to Clark International Airport, will cut down travel time to 30-35 minutes, from the original 1 hour and 30 minutes. The DOTr signed contract Package N-04 was virtually signed with Acciona Construction Philippines, through Director Ruben Eugenio Garcia and Chief Financial Officer Angel Fernandez de la Pradilla, and EEI Corporation, through President and CEO Roberto Jose Castillo. Contract Package N-05 was virtually signed with POSCO Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd., through Executive Vice President Dong Ho Kim and POSCO E&C Vice President Sung Wook Chung......»»

MPBL: Cañete and Strikers shoot lights out as Bacoor stops Bicol

The Bacoor Strikers leaned on a boisterous home crowd and clutch outside shooting to defeat the Bicol Volcanoes - LCC Stores 84-80 on Wednesday night at the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Season. Triples in the last five minutes from best player of the game Mike Cañete, Oping Sumalinog, Mark Montuano and Ian Melencio powered the Strikers to the win in front of a jampacked crowd at the cozy STRIKE Gym in Bacoor. "Sumunod lang kami as sistema namin at kay coach (Chris Gavina.) At nagtiwala kami sa sarili," said Cañete, who led his team with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Bacoor was in the driver's seat at the half, 40-33 thanks in part to their hitting all nine of their free throws. An entertaining third period concluded with Bicol up 57-56 on a Jerome Garcia triple, his second of the segment. Leo Blanca, Mark Pangilinan, Don Ochea and Ronjay Buenafe also all buried threes in the period. But Bicol began the fourth with an 8-0 run, which was actually the second part of a 14-0 run that straddled the two quarters, to lead 65-56 with 7 minutes left. Bacoor's gunners exchanged three-point fire with Volcanoes Clark Derige and Jerome Garcia over the next three minutes to result in a 77-77 scoreline with just over a minute remaining. Then Melencio knocked in a three, and made a pair of free throws while Garcia and Buenafe misfired from range. RJ Ramirez also went 2-for-2 from the line to give Bacoor an 84-77 advantage that held up in the end. The Cavitenos hit 13 of 30 three-point attempts, or 43 percent, as they improve to 11-4, with the most number of wins in the South Division. Bicol loses a second close game in a row and see their slate dive to 8-7 despite a 21-point offering from Buenafe. In the second match of the day the Quezon City Capitals - WEMSAP earned a big 87-84 win over Caloocan Supremos Victory Liner in the battle for bragging rights across A. Bonifacio Avenue. Dahrrel Caranguian was the talisman for Quezon City with 22 points to lead all scorers. He was the co-best player of the game alongside fellow guard Aaron Black. The Capitals led 44-40 at the half, a deficit the Monumento Boys cut to 60-58 entering the final period. But Quezon City stormed out of the blocks with an 8-2 surge to up their lead to eight. Black and Caranguian both hit triples to keep Caloocan at bay. Caloocan nipped at the heels of the Capitals and got to within four points when Supremo AJ Mandani nailed a three-bomb with just under three minutes to go. With a minute and a half he repeated his feat to pull Caloocan to four once again, 87-83. But a Thomas Torres free throw was all the scoring we would see in the match-up as Paul Sanga, Almond Vosotros and Mandani all fired blanks in the last few minutes. QC edges closer to .500 with the win. They are now at 6-7. Meanwhile the Supremos are now level at 7-7. Vosotros topped all Caloocan scorers with 19 points. In the afternoon game, the Pasig Sta. Lucia Realtors disposed of the Cebu Sharks Casino Ethyl Alcohol 78-68. Jeric Teng led Pasig with 21 points, closely followed by Josan Nimes' 20 markers. The Sharkes were down 62-51 at the start of the fourth period but a Kraniel Viloria free throw capped a mini-run of seven points for the Cebuanos, pulling them to within four wih six minutes left, 67-63. Three minutes later five straight points from Josan Nimes would restore a 10 point lead for Pasig, 74-64, and Cebu was unable to draw much closer. Will McAloney was the top producer for the Sharks with 20 points as his team finished with a subpar 30 percent field goal shooting percentage for the day. While Cebu tumble to 4-8 in the South Division the Pasigueños are now a half-game away from Makati with a 9-3 card......»»

Iloilo City eyes more COVID-19 contact tracers

ILOILO CITY—The local government here is eyeing to hire more persons to conduct contact tracing to help in the city’s coronavirus disease (COVID-19) response efforts. Special Assistant to the Mayor Annabelle Rosario S. Blancaflor (right) and PSTMO Chief Jeck Conlu brief people hired to conduct COVID-19 contact tracing in Iloilo City. (Iloilo City PIO / MANILA BULLETIN)  “We are still lacking [personnel].  That’s why we are encouraging applicants,” said Annabelle Rosario S. Blancaflor, Special Assistant to Mayor Jerry Treñas. This is expected to bolster the manpower of the more than 120 people, who have already been trained by the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO) on contact tracing, led by Jeck Conlu. “The objective of training is to hone contact tracing skills on what information is vital. It is not enough that you know the COVID-19 patient, but you have to understand the nature of their movement,” she pointed out. This comes as the city is experiencing a sudden surge in the number of COVID-19 community transmissions.  A barangay in Mandurriao district recorded 10 cases, while another village logged more than five cases over the past week. The hiring of more contact tracers will also be in line with Treñas’ stand that contact tracing must be serious, and that the city should not rely on neighborhood rumor mongers, or the so-called “chismosas”. He dubbed the idea as “out of this world”. Meanwhile, the city government is eying to deploy COVID-19 contract tracers in each of the city’s seven districts......»»

Pro-bound Eumir Marcial could make debut by October

After signing his MP Promotions contract earlier this month, there already seems to be a number of plans in place for Eumir Felix Marcial.  While Marcial is taking steps towards his professional career, the 24-year old decorated amateur pug has maintained that his prime objective right now is to bring home a gold medal for the Philippines in the Olympics. (READ ALSO: Eumir Marcial set on going pro but maintains Olympic gold medal is top priority) Marcial secured his spot in the Tokyo Olympics before the COVID-19 pandemic forced oa postponement of the Summer games to 2021.  Keeping that in mind, MP Promotions appears to be all-in on making Marcial’s gold medal dream into a reality, and that includes gearing his professional training towards becoming the best version of himself in time for Tokyo.  “We have a lot of great things in store, getting Eumir’s career going, we’re bringing him to the US, we’ll train him here, working under some of the top trainers and good sparring, and we’re really just kind of focused on the for first year is winning that gold medal, so everything we do leading up to Tokyo, when he has a few professional fights, is gonna be with in mind that we keep everything good for Tokyo,” explained MP Promotions President Sean Gibbons on Tuesday’s PSA Forum.  With about a year before Tokyo, Gibbons hopes to have Marcial compete in around three professional bouts starting this October.  “We’d hope to possibly have about three fights, because you have about nine months, you have a year before the Olympics, almost to the day right now, but I think you have to stop about three months before, so hopefully, we’ll do something in October, and then we’ll work from there, hopefully three fights before he has to stop and go fully concentrate on the Olympics.”  Gibbons maintains that for now, all of Marcial’s moves will have his Olympics appearance in mind, meaning that his first few pro bouts will likely be 4 to 6-round contest, which is similar to what he’ll be competing in at the Summer games.  To start out, just [4 and 6-rounders] because again, we’re trying to keep in line with what he’s going to be doing in Tokyo, so everything is geared towards preparation for that, and that’s why you start off with a 4 or 6-rounder, then another 4-6 depending again, we have to talk to Eumir, talk to his coaches, talk to everybody, but the idea is to sharpen up a lot of out-of-competition, not the actual fights itself, but all the training he’ll do and, let’s say when he comes to Los Angeles, all the different types of sparring and whoever we work with, along with his coaches,”  Gibbons also gave credit to Marcial’s current coaching team with the National Team, coach Ronald Chavez and coach Don Abnett, the men who have helped transform Marcial to the decorated amateur star and prospect that he is today.  “That’s one of the things I want to say also:  he’s had very good coaches so far, they’ve done very well, so we’re going to adapt whatever Eumir wants, with his coaches, whoever the team chooses in LA to work with,” said Gibbons.  “Yung gusto ko parin kasi, yung makasama ko sa training yung coaches ko, yun parin yung gusto ko makasama dito,” explained Marcial. “Sila pa din yung gusto ko makasama dahil siyempre, Olympics parin, ito parin yung pinag-hahandaan natin, so yun yung gusto kong makasama na mga coach, kasi siyempre amateur parin yung lalaruin natin doon, and gusto ko parin ma-maintain yung style ko yung paano mag-laro sa amateur.”  The commitment to the Olympics, Gibbons says, is something that Marcial has been focused on.  “Eumir has always told me, ‘I promised my dad, I promised the country that I’m gonna win the gold medal.’, so that’s what were doing everything to start the career with, in mind to get better to beat the guy from Ukraine, to beat the Russians, to beat those guys.” As for weight class, Gibbons says that Marcial should be competing around 160-162-pounds or at middleweight in order to keep him in the same division as the one he'll be competing at in the Olympics.  "It appears that we’ll probably  be doing it at middleweight, 160-pounds right in there, 160-162-pounds because again, Eumir is fighting in the Olympics at 165-pounds, that’s 75 kilos, and again, you don’t want to take a guy too low when you’re basically just preparing everything for Tokyo. Somewhere around the weight that he’s been fighting at as an amateur."  .....»»

Volleyball Community Gives Back PH to hold SERVE AS ONE Variety Show

Volleyball Community Gives Back PH has something to serve up for those matchday personnel affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Charo Soriano, who is one of the VCGB PH leaders, is looking forward for two memorable fun days from the sport's biggest stars through the SERVE AS ONE Variety Show.  A fundraising effort for volleyball personnel presented by Volleyball Community Gives Back PH, the show is scheduled on June 5 and 6, 7:30 p.m. on the ABS-CBN Sports Website, ABS-CBN Sports Facebook Page and ABS-CBN Sports YouTube Channel. "Time and time again, the Philippine volleyball community has exemplified solidarity in the face of various adversities - from community development, natural disaster responses, relief operations and more recently,  distribution of PPEs to different provinces. Everyone helps out. And people - players, coaches, management, staff, officials, and fans - all do their part," said Soriano. Last month, the #CARINGFORALL: Down The Line, We Are One was launched to provide assistance for the paid-per-day personnel, as any help will go a long way. As of last Friday, VCGB PH was able to provide 200 care packs to volleyball personnel all over Metro Manila. The group hopes to raise funds and provide care packs to be distributed for more volleyball personnel families affected by the postponement and cancellation of volleyball leagues. Help is on the way and Kiwi Ahomiro, who recently lent her hand in delivering PPEs to the Philippine Army, is more than ready.  "We wanted to reach out and help our volleyball personnel and staff and all those who made our games possible - bouncers, ball retrievers, referees, technicians all those whose livelihoods have been threatened due to COVID-19 so we came up with the idea of putting up the SERVE AS ONE Variety Show. All proceeds will go to the care packages for their families," said Ahomiro. Aby Maraño, who was involved in distributing the second wave of care packages, saw the hardships of the matchday personnel. "Our volleyball officials and personnel felt really sad about the fact that volleyball will stop for the next month cause volleyball from most of them is the only source of income they have. I learned that they started small businesses like selling sweet Pinoy desserts, some are selling peanut butters and garlic spicy sauce only to sustain their lives amidst the pandemic situation," said Maraño. Also taking part in handing out the care packages was Amanda Villanueva, who hopes that the help will go a long way to boost the spirits of the volleyball game's unsung heroes. "In these trying times my main motivation in helping our dearest group of volleyball personnel is the vision of hope that everything will eventually come to an end. To let them know as well that we are in this together and that nobody gets left behind in life whichever direction life leads us because we are one community and we strive to help each other in whatever way we can. To stand together as one family not just on the court but also outside of the court," said Villanueva. It may still a long way to go but Alyssa Valdez believes that the volleyball community will be in the same page to keep the personnel afloat in this challenging time. "The fight is far from over, we’re like in a championship situation, like 14-14 all, fifth set. We need one another to be able to win this fight! So I’m inviting everyone...let’s go help serve and win as one," said Valdez. Donations can be sent to Ryan Sordan through BPI bank account 8069 0632 77, GCash at 0917-5003390 and PayMaya at 0917-5003390.       Meanwhile, a total of 2,081 protective personal equipments (PPEs) was distributed by the VCGB PH in the #ServeOurFrontliners: RAFFLES FOR HEROES fund drive for the medical frontliners who are doing a valiant battle against coronavirus.    VCGB PH was already able to donate 310 PPEs to Sultan Kudarat, 220 to Quezon Medical Center, 301 PPEs to Batangas, 200 to Aklan, 100 to Puerto Galera, 200 to Cebu, 250 to Northern Mindanao Medical Center, 300 to National Children’s Hospital, 100 to Army, 50 to Navy and 50 to Maysan Health Station.  Please visit Volleyball Community Give Back on Facebook and @vcgbph on Instagram and Twitter for more details......»»
