SpaceX’s Starship to remain grounded after explosion probe
SpaceX's Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, must remain grounded while Elon Musk's company completes dozens of corrective actions to prevent a repeat of the spectacular explosion that marred its first orbital test flight, regulators said Friday. The 63 steps include "redesigns of vehicle hardware to prevent leaks and fires, redesign of the launch pad to increase its robustness," additional testing of safety systems, and more, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement after completing a months-long review. SpaceX blew up the uncrewed rocket four minutes after it blasted off from the company's Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, on 20 April. Starship experienced multiple engine failures and its first-stage booster did not separate from the spacecraft above it. The rocket disintegrated into a ball of fire that crashed into the Gulf of Mexico, while a cloud of dust floated over a small town several miles (kilometers) away. Musk immediately congratulated his SpaceX team on an "exciting" test launch and declared it a success because the company would gain valuable insights into what went wrong. The FAA however quickly launched an investigation, while conservation groups announced they would sue the regulator for not doing enough to protect the environment given the proximity of a vital habitat for protected species. Though the probe has now been completed, "the closure of the mishap investigation does not signal an immediate resumption of Starship launches at Boca Chica," said the agency. "SpaceX must implement all corrective actions that impact public safety and apply for and receive a license modification from the FAA that addresses all safety, environmental, and other applicable regulatory requirements prior to the next Starship launch" it added. A new Starship currently stands ready at the launchpad, according to publicity material posted by SpaceX on X, formerly known as Twitter. In a statement, the company reiterated its position that the first test "was a critical step in advancing the capabilities of the most powerful launch system ever developed" and "provided numerous lessons learned that are directly contributing to several upgrades being made" to the vehicle and ground structures. Starship, which stands 394 feet (120 meters) tall, produces 16.7 million pounds (74.3 Meganewtons) of thrust, more than double that of the Saturn V rockets used to send Apollo astronauts to the Moon. SpaceX foresees it as a next-generation, fully reusable spaceship that will eventually carry both crew and cargo to Mars. NASA has contracted a version of Starship to function as a lander craft for its Artemis program to return astronauts to the Moon by the middle of this decade. WHO warns of ‘concerning’ Covid trends ahead of winter
The World Health Organization on Wednesday warned of "concerning trends" for Covid-19 ahead of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, calling for increased vaccinations and surveillance. While data is limited because many countries have stopped reporting Covid data, the UN health agency estimated that hundreds of thousands of people around the world are currently hospitalized with the virus. "We continue to see concerning trends for Covid-19 ahead of the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told an online press conference. "Deaths are increasing in some parts of the Middle East and Asia, intensive care unit admissions are increasing in Europe and hospitalizations are increasing in several regions," he said. But only 43 countries -- less than a quarter of the 194 WHO member states --- are reporting Covid deaths to the agency, and only 20 provide information about hospitalizations, he added. "We estimate that there are hundreds of thousands of people in hospital now for Covid," said Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO's technical lead on Covid-19. "That is a worry given that when we get to colder months, in some countries, people tend to spend more time indoors together, and viruses that transmit through the air like Covid will take advantage of that," she added. With influenza and RSV also circulating, Van Kerkhove emphasized the importance of testing, as well as vaccination. Tedros said while there is not currently a single dominant Covid variant worldwide, the EG.5 Omicron subvariant is on the rise. Small numbers of the highly mutated BA.2.86 subvariant have also now been detected in 11 countries, Tedros said. The WHO is "monitoring this variant closely to assess its transmissibility and potential impact," he added. Preliminary data suggests that existing vaccines will give protection against BA.2.86, Van Kerkhove said. One of WHO's biggest concerns was how few at-risk people had recently received a Covid jab, Tedros said, calling for the vulnerable not to wait to get a booster dose. "The increase in hospitalisations and deaths shows that Covid-19 is here to stay, and that we will continue to need tools to fight it," Tedros said. Last week, the WHO announced that a global knowledge-sharing platform about Covid called C-TAP had secured three new licensing agreements to transfer vaccine technologies. Leyte inmates, personnel get jabbed
The Bureau of Corrections announced on Friday that the Leyte Regional Prison inmates totaling 148 persons and seven personnel of the Leyte Regional Prison had their bivalent Covid-19 booster vaccinations. It disclosed that the vaccinations were administered by doctors and medical personnel of the Department of Health Region VIII which sponsored the event. On the instruction of BuCor director general Gregorio Catapang Jr., the agency has been partnering with other agencies — specifically the DoH — to provide adequate services to guarantee the persons deprived of liberty’s “health and safety which are their rights as human beings.” Last May, at least 105 PDLs at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City had been infected with Covid-19. According to CT/SSupt. Ma. Cecilia Villanueva, BuCor officer-in-charge director general for reformation and director of the bureau’s Directorate for Health Services, the Covid-19 infections were most likely caused by visitors of PDLs. Lacuna rolls out jabs for seniors, health workers
The local government of Manila announced that it will now be administering bivalent vaccines designed to protect against both the original Covid-19 virus and the Omicron variant for healthcare workers and senior citizens. Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna disclosed on Sunday that the vaccines will be available starting 10 July at 44 health centers in the city. Healthcare workers and senior citizens who have completed their primary Covid-19 vaccination along with their first and second booster shots are eligible to receive the bivalent vaccines. Lacuna stressed that the city government of Manila is maintaining its “open policy,” which means that even those residing outside of Manila may avail of the shots if they belong to the eligible groups qualified as such by the national government. She also appealed to health frontliners and senior citizens of Manila to avail of the bivalent vaccine, saying it will spell extra protection for them and their families as she stressed the need for health workers to provide added protection to the patients they handle on a daily basis. The rollout of the bivalent vaccines in Manila comes as the city is experiencing a slight increase in Covid-19 cases and Lacuna said that the city government is taking steps to mitigate the spread of the virus, including increasing testing and contact tracing. Ariane 5 blasts off for last time
PARIS (AFP) — Europe’s workhorse Ariane 5 rocket blasted off for a final time on Wednesday, with its farewell flight after 27 years of launches coming at a difficult time for European space efforts. Faced with soaring global competition, the continent has unexpectedly found itself without a way to independently launch heavy missions into space due to delays to the next-generation Ariane 6 and Russia withdrawing its rockets. The 117th and final flight of the Ariane 5 rocket took place around 2200 GMT on Wednesday from Europe’s spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The launch had been postponed twice. It was originally scheduled on 16 June, but was called off because of problems with pyrotechnical lines in the rocket’s booster, which have since been replaced. Then Tuesday’s launch was delayed by bad weather. The Wednesday night flight went off without a hitch, watched by hundreds of spectators, including former French Justice Minister Christiane Taubira, and was greeted with applause. Marie-Anne Clair, the director of the Guiana Space Center, told AFP that the final flight of Ariane 5 was “charged with emotion” for the teams in Kourou, where the rocket’s launches have punctuated life for nearly three decades. The final payload on Ariane 5 is a French military communications satellite and a German communications satellite. The satellite “marks a major turning point for our armed forces: better performance and greater resistance to jamming,” French Minister of the Armed Forces Sebastien Lecornu tweeted. Davao health workers, seniors get jabs
DAVAO CITY — The local government here — through its City Health Office — has launched the third bivalent booster dose vaccination for healthcare workers and senior citizens at the People’s Park. In a statement, Monday, Dr. Paul Marvin Mañosa, the district health physician and in-charge of the People’s Park Vaccination, said they started giving the jabs on 1 July and the bivalent dose can be availed of by those who are eligible by presenting their identification cards. “The health care workers and our senior citizens are the only ones allowed to be given with this as long as they were vaccinated with the first and second doses and two booster doses,” Mañosa said. He added that they will be accommodated, regardless of the vaccine brand administered to them for their booster doses. Mañosa also said that the People’s Park Vaccination hub has more than 3,900 doses of bivalent Pfizer vaccine and they will continue with the vaccination until supplies last. “As long as they received four doses and four months from their second booster, they are already eligible for the third booster dose,” said Mañosa. “We encourage everyone to avail of this booster, those who are eligible, as it adds protection for you. As of the moment, Covid-19 cases are less serious but at least this will give added protection, especially to our senior citizens.” The post Davao health workers, seniors get jabs appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
DoH-8 rolls out bivalent jabs
PALO, Leyte — The Department of Health in Eastern Visayas kicked off the rollout for the administration of bivalent Covid-19 vaccines that will provide protection against two subvariant of the virus. DoH-8 regional information officer Jelyn Malibago said that 10 healthcare workers from the DoH Treatment and Rehabilitation Center-Dulag were the first beneficiaries of the bivalent vaccines in the initial launch last 30 June. “The bivalent vaccines generate an immune response not only to the original strain but also to two omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5,” Malibago said. She added that the bivalent Covid-19 vaccines will be offered to eligible populations who have received the 2nd booster dose. “It is given as a third booster dose for healthcare workers and senior citizens at least four to six months after their second booster dose,” Malibago said, adding that the DoH central office has yet to release the guidelines for the inoculation of the general public. Bivalent vaccine rollout starts
The Department of Health on Wednesday officially rolled out the bivalent Covid-19 vaccines at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City. Health Secretary Ted Herbosa, who led the ceremonial vaccination, was the first to receive the bivalent Covid-19 vaccine. Bivalent vaccines target both the old Wuhan strain of Covid-19, as well as its new Omicron subvariants. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who graced the event, called on Filipinos to avail themselves of the extra protection offered by the bivalent Covid-19 vaccines. “I appeal to everyone, especially those who have yet to receive their primary series of vaccinations, to get vaccinated against Covid-19. This is not for your own good alone, but also for the protection of your families and the general public,” Marcos said in his speech. More bivalent vaccines Herbosa said the country is expecting to receive more bivalent Covid-19 vaccines from the World Health Organization’s COVAX. He did not say, however, when the additional bivalent Covid-19 vaccines will arrive in the country. “We expect more doses to come. For now, as before, first in line for the added protection will be our healthcare workers, the front liners, whom we call priority A1,” he said. “And then our senior citizens. As you know the highest mortality is among senior citizens, so we prioritize them, whom we call A2,” he added. To recall, the Philippines received a total of 390,000 doses of Pfizer bivalent Covid-19 vaccines from the government of Lithuania. According to DoH guidelines, healthcare workers and senior citizens who received their second booster shots at least 4 to 6 months ago are eligible for the first phase of the bivalent vaccine rollout.
