BSP issues first-ever colored coin set
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday said that establishing a formal currency by any country is part of the definition of being a sovereign nation. The Chief Executive said this in his speech as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas led the launch of the commemorative coin set for the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood held at the Ceremonial Hall of the Malacañang Palace. "We have to see it not just a very very nice souvenir, but really a commemoration of the creation of the Republic of the Philippines," Marcos said. The President mentioned that the creation of the coin set was made possible through modern technology and current best techniques being practiced in the country. The commemorative coins are a "labor of love" and that it "(shows) how far we have gone" as a nation in 125 years, he said. The country's first-ever colored coins feature the country's key historical scenes. The BSP issued the coin set with 100-Piso, 20-Piso and 5-Piso denominations in commemoration of the 1898 declaration of Philippine independence (100-Piso), the birth of the country’s first republic at the Barasoain Church (20-Piso), and the bravery of the Filipinos who fought for the country’s sovereignty in the Philippine-American War (5-Piso). The central bank used the latest digital printing technology in developing the APIN coin set, which features the first colored, non-circulation, commemorative coins produced by the BSP. "I have never seen coins like these before," Marcos said. "We have used all the best technology, and you can see different things depending on the angle you view them. I congratulate everyone who has been involved in this quite remarkable project," he added. BSP Governor Felipe Medalla, for his part, pointed out that that the central bank issued the colored non-circulation commemorative coins as part of the central bank's effort to preserve the cultural heritage and promote pride in our shared history. "We are issuing for the first time the colored, non-circulation --- which means you cannot spend this, you collect it --- coins showcasing key historical scenes," Medalla said. The Central Bank chief also highlighted the symbolic significance of the coin designs. Medalla said the coins symbolize peace (blue), courage (red) and freedom or sovereignty (yellow). The National Historical Commission of the Philippines is at the forefront of the 125th APIN celebration from 2023 to 2026, with the theme "Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan," Under Administrative Order No. 8, Marcos directed the creation of a committee that would “facilitate the planning and execution of programs and projects” for the commemoration of the 125th Philippine independence anniversary. Duterte asked to act on slow disbursement of aid for seniors
President Duterte has been urged to step in on the supposed slow disbursement of financial assistance to senior citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. Senior Citizen partylist Rep. Rodolfo “Ompong” Ordanes brought to the attention of the Chief Executive the “continuous troubles” hounding the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s implementation and disbursement of the Social Amelioration Program (SAP) , Unconditional Cash Transfer (UCT), and Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens. “To date, we continually receive reports from thousands of our senior citizens all around the Philippines on how the DSWD fails to timely disburse the monetary aid that our government promised to them,” he said in his letter to Duterte dated Oct. 21. He laments that some of the senior citizens have perished before receiving a single centavo from the monetary aid due them. “This slow implementation and disbursement of the DSWD of critical monetary aid for our senior citizens clearly runs contrary to the directive of Your Excellency for the government to do whatever it takes to protect the welfare of our almost 10 million vulnerable senior citizens,” he said. “Thus, we humbly seek the assistance of Your Excellency in requesting that the DSWD fast-track the implementation and disbursement of the monetary aid for our senior citizens,” Ordanes said. During the House of Representatives’ plenary deliberations on the proposed P171-billion budget of the DSWD for 2021 last Oct. 13, it was relayed that some 1.404 million senior citizens have benefited from the national government’s SAP. In a virtual press briefing last week, over 2.9 million indigent senior citizens have received their social pension worth about P8.7 billion. The number is almost 83 percent of the 3.5 million indigent elderly targeted to receive the government stipend. During his 58th birth anniversary last Oct. 15, DSWD Secretary Rolando Bautista led the distribution of social pension worth P2.178 million to around 726 indigent senior citizens in Dinalupihan, Bataan. Republic Act No. 9994 or the “Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010” provides that seniors qualified to receive social pension are those who are frail, sickly, or with disability; without any pension from other government agencies; and without a permanent source of income or source of financial assistance and compensation to support their basic needs. However, the DSWD said those senior citizens who are not included in the list, but are eligible, can still appeal to the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA), their local governments, and the nearest Field Office, which has jurisdiction over their areas, for assessment......»»

Globe reports steep 73.7% decline in blocked bank-related spam, scam SMS in 2023
The telecommunications company Globe has reported a significant 73.7% decrease in the number of blocked spam and scam SMS related to banks in 2023. This reduction is a result of the interception of 21.9 million bank-related fraudulent messages, a sharp decline from the 83.39 million messages blocked the previous year. Globe attributes this achievement to its proactive strategies and strong partnerships with major banks and financial institutions in the Philippines. The company has established anti-fraud alliances with the Bankers Association of the Philippines and individual players in the finance sector, enabling the sharing of data and intelligence to prevent and investigate fraud effectively. Anton Bonifacio, Chief Information Security Officer at Globe, emphasized the company's commitment to combating financial fraud and enhancing security measures for customer protection. Globe has invested approximately US$20 million to improve its spam and scam SMS detection and blocking system and operates a 24/7 Security Operations Center to filter out unwanted messages from both international and domestic sources. Progressive groups: Youths are facing ‘educational crisis’
Progressive groups have raised concerns over what they are calling an educational crisis facing the youth. They argue that this crisis is threatening the right to free and quality education. During the 160th commemoration of Andres Bonifacio's birth, Anakbayan Southern Mindanao spokesperson Beverly Gofredo highlighted the low allocation for state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the proposed budget for 2024. Gofredo stated that this has resulted in budget cuts for 36 out of 117 SUCs, including the University of the Philippines-Mindanao (UP-Min) and the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) in the Davao Region. In response to these concerns, various groups staged a protest in Davao City, calling for the government to address the issue. The groups also expressed their opposition to the mandatory Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and the attacks on academic freedom. Additionally, they called for the government to halt the implementation of the Jeepney Modernization Program and to declare an unconditional ceasefire in Palestine. The rally in Davao City was reported to have been peaceful, with no untoward incidents......»»
Turkish city centenary holds special significance
Standing at the foot of the cliff overlooking Kemaliye, the golden statue of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the father of the nation, evokes the glorious past of this small town in eastern Turkey. Ataturk rewarded the loyalty of the town, nestled between the mountains and the sources of the Euphrates, by giving it his name ahead of creating the Turkish republic out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire 100 years ago. “The whole country would have wanted to bear his name but he would never have accepted!” said retired hotelier Haci Omer Yalcinkayalar, referring to the modest nature of Ataturk, who will be celebrated on the nation’s anniversary on 29 October. General Mustafa Kemal, hero of the Dardanelles war against the Allies, in 1919 began confronting the Westerners who occupied the dismembered empire to found the independent nation he longed for. His forces found themselves nearing disaster at the gates of Ankara in 1921 when he received a telegram from Egin, a trading town at the crossroads of Anatolia and the Caucasus, with an Armenian population. The telegram read: “Dear Pasha, we have 500 horsemen ready to leave at your command,” recounted Yalcinkayalar. Situated on the caravan routes heading towards Baghdad, Iran and Georgia, the town was prosperous. This is evidenced by the persisting stone and wooden houses that were built along the steep slopes of the mountainside, which town authorities requested to be classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. The entire district had around 20,000 inhabitants including some 6,000 in Kemaliye itself in Ataturk’s time, compared with 1,500 residents today. “In the end, they didn’t have to do it,” Yalcinkayalar said of the offer to send horsemen. But Ataturk did not forget the gesture and, a year later, he wrote to the Egin municipal council to offer his name. “It was given to us as a gift,” said the 73-year-old who has devoted his retirement to his town’s history. “It honors us: With the republic, we joined the civilized world.” Kemaliye has been home to many celebrations including concerts, football tournaments and banquets on every October 29 since the birth of the republic in 1923. In Guzide Tufekci’s family, the story is passed down with enthusiasm: The 60-year-old former literature professor, an enthusiastic Kemalist, recalled what Turkish women owe to Ataturk and the republic. “He opened the way for enlightened Turkish women, intellectuals, to have access to education, to have a profession. We’re proud of him,” she said. Facing a small train station that has served Kemaliye since 1938, a modest cafe is decorated like a museum. Erdal Erdurk, 59, has hung portraits of Ataturk on all the walls — in color, in black and white, in a soldier’s uniform, in a tuxedo or wearing his Astrakhan hat — and hung a huge red flag bearing his image above the entrance. Maintain probity, Gesmundo tells magistrates
In celebration of the Judicial Integrity Board’s third founding anniversary at the Court of Appeals auditorium, the Supreme Court recognized the board’s indispensable role in the pursuit of transparent and accountable justice. Associate Justice Jose Midas P. Marquez, addressing the gathering, heralded the JIB’s pivotal function, emphasizing that the judiciary “must uphold transparency and accountability to inspire public confidence and trust.” Chief Justice Gesmundo, through Justice Marquez, conveyed the significance of the JIB’s creation as the institution responsible for ensuring that judicial officers and court employees perform their duties in strict accordance with established codes of conduct. Gesmundo underscored that “judicial accountability is vital to the preservation of the rule of law and the effectiveness of the justice system.” He stressed that justices and judges must uphold the four standards mandated by the Constitution: Integrity, competence, probity and independence. These standards, he noted, apply universally to all judiciary officials and employees, regardless of rank, salary grade, educational attainment, or gender. Suit charges crypto firms with billion-dollar fraud
New York's attorney general on Thursday filed a lawsuit accusing cryptocurrency firms Gemini and Genesis with fraud that wound up costing investors more than a billion dollars. Gemini Trust Company, created by twin brothers Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss of early Facebook fame, misled investors about the risk of putting money into a program that involved loans that at one point were concentrated in Sam Bankman-Fried’s Alameda research trading firm, according to the suit. "Investors around the country lost more than a billion dollars because they were fed blatant lies that their money would be safe and grow if they invested it in Gemini Earn," New York attorney General Letitia James said in a release. Gemini offered people the chance to lend cryptocurrencies in exchange for high returns via a Gemini Earn program, according to the suit. Those loans included some to digital currency services platform Genesis, which in turn lent cryptocurrency to other players in the industry. But the bankrupcy of Bankman-Fried's Alameda Research and its FTX platform last year triggered panic in the market. Bankman-Fried is currently on trial in New York, facing fraud charges of his own. Unable to honor massive withdrawal requests, Genesis filed for bankruptcy in January. "Gemini hid the risks of investing with Genesis and Genesis lied to the public about its losses," James said. According to documents published at that time, Gemini loans to Genesis tallied some $765 million. Gemini was founded by the Winklevoss twins, who were made famous by the film "The Social Network" about the birth of Facebook. In a post at X, formerly known as Twitter, Gemini contended that the lawsuit confirms that the exchange and its users were "victims of a massive fraud and systematically lied to" by Genesis. "Blaming a victim for being defrauded and lied to makes no sense and we look forward to defending ourselves against this inconsistent position," Gemini said in the post. James accused Gemini of deceiving more than 230,000 investors. Her lawsuit also argues that former Genesis chief executive Soichiro Moro and Genesis parent company DCG with trying to conceal the massive losses. The litigation seeks to have Gemini, Genesis and DCG banned from New York's financial investment industry and pay restitution to investors who lost money. DCG defended itself in a post at X, saying it did nothing illegal. "I am shocked by the baseless allegations in the attorney general's complaint and intend to fight these claims in court," DCG founder and chief executive Barry Silbert said in the post.
