Chop-chop murder suspect shot dead
JOLO, Sulu — An alleged member of the Abu Sayyaf Group was killed while nine police officers were wounded, including three senior police officers, during a nearly three-hour clash in Barangay Siet Higad, Panamao, Sulu. Police and military operatives were about to serve a warrant of arrest against the suspect at about 2:30 a.m. yesterday when a firefight erupted and lasted until 5 a.m., P/Col. John Francis Encinareal said. Encinareal identified the slain suspect as Muksidal A. Jumadil, a resident of Barangay Kamindus, Luuk, Sulu, and temporarily residing in Barangay Siet Higad, Panamao, Sulu. Jumadil was the primary suspect in the brutal killing of Nurdija Dammang Aminiddin, a small-town businesswoman in Barangay Kanmindus, Luuk, according to Encinareal. Jumadil killed Dammang, and her body was cut into small pieces and found scattered in different locations in the village. A case for murder was filed against Jumadil and is still pending at the office of the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office. The wounded police officers were identified as P/Capt. Nolie L. Agmaliw, P/Lt. Insurgent meets end in NegOr clash
DUMAGUETE CITY — The Philippine Army recently confirmed the death of an individual believed to be a member of the New People’s Army during an encounter in the far-flung barangay of Milagrosa in Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental last Saturday morning. In its report, the 11th Infantry Battalion disclosed that the recovered body of the slain rebel has yet to be identified. It added that seized from the clash site were one M653 rifle, one anti-personnel mine, four magazines for M653 (20 rounds cap), three magazines for M653 (30 rounds cap), 40 rounds 5.56 mm ball, an electrical tester, three lithium batteries, one bandolier, five backpacks with personal belongings, tarpaulin and food stuff. The 11IB said that the encounter came two days after a government soldier was killed at the same encounter site in Sitio Taleo as government troops were conducting strike operations against remnants of the NPA’s dismantled South East Front following information of armed men in the area. In the first encounter, troops seized two caliber .45 pistols, three magazines for Caliber .45, 11 live ammunition for Caliber .45, one hand grenade and personal belongings. Maj. Gen. Marion Sison, 3rd Infantry Division commander, vowed to continue their operations against the rebels. “This incident (death of a soldier) will not dampen our spirits but will further serve as our motivation to aggressively pursue the remaining members of the Communist Terrorist Group,” Sison said. “We will make sure that this ultimate sacrifice paid by our soldier-hero will not be in vain. We will not rest until none of them remain to continue their futile and senseless armed struggle,” he added. The post Insurgent meets end in NegOr clash appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Forked-tongue promises
Commitment to transparency is among the qualities of a corporation that investors and the public look at before making the crucial decision to either infuse some capital into it or buy its products. Power companies have the bigger responsibility for disclosures during the difficult period of rising prices, coupled with the global effort to save the earth from climate catastrophe as a result of greenhouse gases. In 2017, a movement among global big businesses for full disclosure of their projects that may impact the environment called Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, or TCFD, was launched. Since then, the country’s biggest corporations have signed up to the global transparency movement but not San Miguel Corp. Instead, SMC said in its annual report that it “developed a comprehensive, standardized data template to capture pertinent data and disclosures on our material ESG topics from our various subsidiaries,” without actually signing up for the global accord. Among companies engaged in power generation, SMC also lags in terms of its climate commitments. Think tank Center for Energy, Ecology and Development said in 2019 that First Gen of the Lopez Group announced it will “lead the transition to a decarbonized energy system in line with the United Nations target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.” SMC, which now dominates energy production through fossil fuel, also has not made any commitments to align with the 1.5°C Paris temperature goal. CEED said that unlike some of the biggest conglomerates in the country, SMC has yet to indicate unqualified support for TCFD. The body was created to develop recommendations on the types of information that should be disclosed by corporations to support investors, lenders and insurance underwriters in appropriately assessing and pricing a specific set of risks related to climate change. The Aboitiz Group, through its holding company Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc., was the first local supporter of TCFD. The global movement said on its online site that companies that express support for TCFD recommendations “join a cohort of leading companies that take action against climate change and are thoughtful to consider how climate change will impact their businesses.” “Easing transparency makes markets more efficient, and economies more stable and resilient,” Michael Bloomberg, TCFD chairperson said. According to CEED, the disclosure of climate risks in key private undertakings would guide SMC and its shareholders in making informed choices in “an increasingly carbon-constrained world.” It added that the value of climate-disclosure information and SMC’s plans for a low-carbon economy are becoming increasingly valuable for stakeholders. SMC, by the way, has major shareholders affiliated with the Catholic Church that have kept silent amid the reluctance of the Asian giant for full disclosure. Church groups, ironically, have been calling for action and accountability from financial institutions, energy and extractive companies, and government leaders to contribute to efforts to save the planet. In July 2021, SMC announced plans to move away from building new coal facilities, including those that use “clean technology,” and move towards clean energy. SMC, however, never discloses which power plant projects will be dropped except for three projects in Quezon and Cebu that have total capacities of 1,500 megawatts. CEED said data from the DoE from July 2020 showed plans for new coal-fired power plants with a total capacity of 3,628 MW until a moratorium imposed by the Department of Energy disrupted these plans. SMC also stated that it is aggressively pursuing more sustainable sources of energy which include expensive liquefied natural gas. The duplicity is very apparent since the company’s environmental commitments clash with its actual program to dominate power generation through imported fossil fuel. Sultan Kudarat clash leaves insurgent dead
ZAMBOANGA CITY — State troops in Central Mindanao have reportedly clashed with individuals believed to be members of the New People’s Army at Kalamansig municipality in Sultan Kudarat. Joint Task Force Central on Friday reported that an insurgent was confirmed dead while other NPA members were injured during the 20-minute firefight. JTF-Central commander Maj. Gen. Alex Rillera narrated that soldiers patrolling the forested areas of Barangay Limulan in Kalamansig have encountered the group at about 3 p.m. on Thursday. He added that after the dust settled, one insurgent died while an undisclosed number of rebels were reportedly injured. “Fortunately, none of the government troops were hurt but when the operating troops investigated the scene of the encounter, we found the body of a communist terrorist who was blinded and left alone by his colleagues,” Rillera said. Brig. Gen. Michael Santos, commander of the 603rd Brigade also reported that he immediately instructed the units under his command not to give the fleeing terrorists an opportunity to regroup again. “We will continue our pursuit of the remaining members of the NPA communist terrorist group. We also got their two M14 rifles, so their war equipment is gradually running out,” Santos said. Meanwhile, Rillera continues to appeal to members of the NPA to give peace a chance by surrendering to the folds of the law. “Avail of this chance to change your life and be once again with your family. Your government is here and ready to help you because no one wins by using force,” Rillera said. “We know that you were just a victim of the treacherous senior members of the terrorist group who brought your colleague to such a terrible misfortune. We are here and ready to listen to your grievances,” he added. Since January, the 6ID has neutralized 40 communist rebels. Of this number, five were arrested, 11 were killed and 24 voluntarily returned to the fold of the law. The post Sultan Kudarat clash leaves insurgent dead appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Tony Bennett, last of classic American crooners, dead at 96
Tony Bennett, the last in a generation of classic American crooners whose ceaselessly cheery spirit bridged generations to make him a hitmaker across seven decades, died Friday in New York. He was 96. Raised in an era when big bands defined US pop music, Bennett achieved an improbable second act when he started winning over young audiences in the 1990s -- not by reinventing himself but by demonstrating his sheer joy in belting out the standards. And then at age 88, Bennett, in 2014 became the oldest person ever to reach number one on the US album sales chart through a collection of duets with Lady Gaga -- who became his friend and touring companion but only one of a long list of younger stars who rushed to work with the singing great. Bennett's publicist, Sylvia Weiner, announced his death. Likened since the start of his career to Frank Sinatra, Bennett first tried to distance himself but eventually followed much of the same path as other crooners of yore -- singing in nightclubs, on television, and for movies, although his attempts to act ended quickly. His gift proved to be his stage presence. With a welcoming smile and dapper suit, he sang with gusto and a smooth vibrato in a strong, clearly enunciated voice, which he kept in shape through training from the operatic Bel Canto tradition. Starting with his recording of the film song "Because of You" in 1951, Bennett sang dozens of hits including "Rags to Riches," "Stranger in Paradise" and, in what would become his signature tune, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," which landed him two of his career's 19 Grammy Awards. But the British Invasion led by The Beatles initially took a toll on the singer, whose music suddenly sounded quaint and antiquated. He nearly died of a cocaine overdose in 1979 before sobering up and eventually reviving his career. "When rap came along, or disco, whatever the new fashion was at the moment, I didn't try to find something that would fit whatever the style was of the whole music scene," Bennett told the British culture magazine Clash. "I just stayed myself and sang sincerely and tried to just stay honest with myself -- never compromising, just doing the best songs that I could think of for the public. "And luckily it just paid off." Singing as hardscrabble youth Tony Bennett -- his stage name came after advice from showbiz A-lister Bob Hope -- was born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in the Astoria neighborhood of New York's Queens borough. His father was a struggling grocer who immigrated from southern Italy's Calabria region, to which his mother also traced her ancestry. He showed early promise as an entertainer, singing at age nine next to legendary New York mayor Fiorello LaGuardia when he ceremonially opened the city's Triborough Bridge, now known as the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge. But his father's death at age 10, at a time when the United States was still struggling to exit the Great Depression, led him to leave school and earn money through jobs including singing at Italian restaurants and caricature painting, which remained a lifelong side career. During World War II, Bennett was drafted into the 63rd Infantry Division and was sent to France and Germany. But he was demoted after cursing out an officer from the South who objected to Bennett dining with an African American friend in the then racially segregated army. As punishment, Bennett spent his tour of duty digging out bodies and shipping them. But after the Allied victory, Bennett found an unexpected break into music as he waited with fellow troops in Wiesbaden, Germany to return home. With the city's opera house still intact, a US Army band performed a weekly show to be broadcast on military radio across Germany. Taken on as the band's librarian, Bennett was quickly impressed with his voice and was made one of four vocalists. "During this period in the army, I enjoyed the most musical freedom I've ever had in my life," Bennett later wrote in his autobiography, "The Good Life." "I could sing whatever I wanted, and there was no one around to tell me any different," he wrote. Outspoken against racism and war When he returned to the United States, he took formal singing lessons through the GI Bill, which covered educational expenses for returning troops. His experiences made Bennett a lifelong liberal. He became especially enraged in the 1950s when he played in Miami with jazz pioneer Duke Ellington, who was not allowed to attend a press party due to segregation at the hotel. In a then risky move for a popular entertainer, he accepted an invitation from singer Harry Belafonte to join civil rights icon Martin Luther King in the 1965 march from Selma, Alabama in support of equal voting rights for African Americans. He later wrote in his memoir that the hostility of the white state troopers reminded him of Nazi Germany. He was also an outspoken opponent of war, at times raising controversy. "The first time I saw a dead German, that's when I became a pacifist," he told popular radio host Howard Stern days after the 11 September 2001 attacks. Late in life, still cool Bennett was married three times and had four children including Antonia Bennett, who has followed his path as a singer of pop and jazz standards. But his son Danny Bennett was most instrumental in his father's career, aggressively courting MTV and other players in the pop world as a manager for his father. By the early 1990s, Bennett -- his style and look little changed from the 1960s, except for more gray hair -- was appearing in music videos on MTV and singing warm-up at concerts by alternative rock giants such as Smashing Pumpkins and Porno for Pyros. Proof that Bennett was back came in 1993 when he presented a prize at the MTV Video Music Awards alongside the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who hailed his cool factor and playfully sang part of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." His career only kept building and a decade later, he released three successful albums of duets. On one of them, "Body and Soul," he sang with Amy Winehouse in her last recording before she died in 2011 at age 27. He marked his 90th birthday with a star-studded concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall, which was turned into a television special and album. The title was taken from a song popularized by Bennett: "The Best Is Yet to Come." Bennett toured the United States and Europe into his final decade, playing his last public performance before the coronavirus pandemic halted touring in New Jersey on 11 March 2020. Soon after, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2016. He had kept his condition quiet for years. Upon turning 95, Bennett played two more birthday concerts, again at Radio City Music Hall, with Lady Gaga -- shows billed as his farewell to New York. He then canceled the remainder of his 2021 tour dates on "doctors' orders." "And let the music play as long as there's a song to sing / And I will stay younger than spring," he crooned during the first of his farewell shows, in a rendition of his ballad "This Is All I Ask." "You've been a good audience," Bennett said prior to his encore. "I love this audience." The post Tony Bennett, last of classic American crooners, dead at 96 appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Thai football association boss resigns over SEA Games brawls
Thailand's football association president announced his resignation on Saturday, following political pressure over brawling between the kingdom's national team and Indonesia during the men's final at the Southeast Asian Games. Indonesia defeated Thailand 5-2 in extra time in the May final that saw players and coaches on both sides clash on two occasions with four red cards issued. Thailand's football association later apologized and handed out lengthy bans to two players, two officials, and a coach. In a statement on Facebook, football association boss Somyot Poompanmoung said Thai deputy prime minister Prawit Wongsuwon, who heads the country's national Olympic committee, had ordered him to stand down as president at a meeting on Friday. "As President of the Football Association of Thailand... I am ready to follow the order of General Prawit," Somyot said in the Saturday statement, adding he would notify the ASEAN Football Federation, the Asian Football Confederation, and the international governing body FIFA. Men's football at the biennial SEA Games is played between under-23 sides. The final had been billed as a chance for Indonesia to restore some pride to its football following a deadly stadium disaster and the loss of hosting the Under-20 World Cup. But the game will be remembered for the chaotic scenes which began in the 97th minute when Thailand -– who had been 2-0 down -– scored to make it 2-2 and force extra time. Thai officials celebrated by running over to the Indonesia bench, prompting the first melee, and there was more trouble when Indonesia retook the lead early in extra time. DI emir meets end
ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities here on Wednesday reported that the alleged head or emir of the Dawlah Islamiya in the Philippines died after exchanging fire with state troops serving warrants of arrest in Marawi City. Joint Task Force ZamPeLan commander Maj. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete said that the emir — identified as Fahar Pumbaya Pangalian alias Abu Zacharia — died during the firefight. Also killed in the clash was Joharie Sandab alias Morsid, the DI-Philippines sub-leader for finance and logistics. Reports disclosed that police and military forces were about to serve warrants of arrest when Abu Zacharia and his men opened fire and lobbed improvised bombs toward government forces at 1:30 a.m. According to Nafarrete, a joint law enforcement operation was conducted at the safe house of Abu Zacharia in Barangay Bangon, Marawi City as government forces backed by armored personnel carriers were approaching Abu Zacharia’s location when his group resisted, triggering a firefight. Nafarrete added that Abu Zacharia threw a 60mm mortar and two hand grenades toward the troops’ position during a 10-minute heavy exchange of gunfire. While the soldiers were conducting a clearing operation in the area, they recovered the dead body of Abu Zacharia and two M16A1 rifles with ammunition. Nafarrete also reported that a soldier was wounded during the exchange of gunfire and is currently undergoing medical treatment in one of the hospitals in Marawi City. Meantime, Morsid was killed in the firefight against soldiers of the 103rd Infantry Brigade and the Philippine National Police. Armed Forces of the Philippines-Western Mindanao Command chief Lt. Gen. Roy Galido said that the death of the emir was a significant breakthrough in the campaign against the Daulah Islamiyah. He also believes that the death of Abu Zacharia will be the downfall of the IS-inspired group in our area of operation. “This achievement is attributable to the solidarity among various sectors. May we continue to walk the path leading to internal security with utmost sincerity and dedication,” Galido said. The post DI emir meets end appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
BARMM Governors Caucus, for what?
As this column had predicted, it was bound to happen. There is no stopping the confrontation between the leadership of the Bangsamoro Regional Government, dominated by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, and the incumbent governors in the region. It’s a clash between status quo and change. The emerging Moro leaders in the region were personified by the governors advocating reforms versus the well-entrenched dynasties. Everything pointed to it happening. They can swear to high heavens that no such thing will happen, but their actions betray their intentions. This column sees them as being civil to each other only for public consumption. But below the sea of calm is a raging current with each side preparing to unleash their powers. Their body language says it all. A political showdown is imminent for what Moro political opinionist, Sultan Pangnal Datu Ramos, describes as a Battle Royale. In a move that was nothing but an alignment and consolidation of political forces, the five elected governors in the BARMM convened what they conveniently called the “BARMM Governors Caucus (BGC)” in Cagayan de Oro City on 6 June. Present were Mamintal “Bombit” Adiong Jr. (Lanao del Sur) who played host, Abdusakur Tan (Sulu), Bai Mariam Mangudadatu (Maguindanao del Sur), Ysmael Sali (Tawi-Tawi), and Malusso Mayor Hanie Bud, president of the Basilan League of Municipalities, representing Governor Hadjiman Hataman-Salliman. This was not the first time they met. In fact, after every major political development in the region that they saw as a threat to their political sway over their turf, they met and made known their position which was not always in sync with that of the BARMM leadership. In a press statement heavy with motherhood phrases meant for public consumption, they claimed that the BGC is “a platform that will advocate and promote the issues our constituents have identified as critical. The Caucus will engage in dialogue toward greater cooperation and collaboration with the national and regional governments and multisectoral groups.” If their intention is honest and true, why did they not involve the BARMM as the immediate tier in the governance set-up in addressing critical issues? Why sideline the regional government which could help them promote the interest of their public? Why was the newly appointed governor of Maguindanao del Norte not invited to the caucus? Is it because he is identified with the leadership of the BARMM having been a senior minister before his appointment by the President? If they wanted a dialogue, why didn’t they involve national and regional officials or their representatives in the forum? The manifesto likewise said that “the Caucus is committed to supporting the peace process and the BARMM. But of course, who would want unpeace? A disruption of the peace will adversely affect their decades-old dynasties. Their actions belie their claim of support for the BARMM. They look at BARMM as nothing but a threat to their political grip on their individual fiefdoms. The BGC is the sum of past dialogues and meetings of these governors with the agenda manifestly not in tandem with the interest of the BARMM leadership. When BARMM was being conceptualized and was later submitted for legislation, Gov. Tan challenged the move before the Supreme Court and when the BARMM officials lobbied for the postponement of the parliamentary election which led to the extension of their terms of office, most governors opposed it. And they likewise opposed certain provisions of the Bangsamoro Electoral Code which was passed by the regional parliament over their objection. The recent ambush of Gov. Adiong alerted these governors to a serious threat to their leadership and they decided to band closer together to protect their political interests. They raised concerns about the non-completion of the decommissioning process, which has allowed the armed MILF to continue carrying their firearms in public with impunity. How can you face and win over an enemy whose followers are allowed by the government to pack six shooters? This scenario could definitely put the MILF’s Bangsamoro Justice Party at a huge advantage. These factors and many more gave birth to the Caucus. More on this in my next column. amb_mac_lanto@yahoo.com The post BARMM Governors Caucus, for what? appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Former UP student leader killed after clash
CATBALOGAN CITY — The Armed Forces of the Philippines confirmed the death of a former student leader of the University of the Philippines-Tacloban in an encounter with the military in of Barangay Mabini, Catarman, Northern Samar last 28 May. In a statement, the AFP said Joshua Sagdullas, known in the underground movement as Ka Miyong and Ka Martin, was among the four casualties when troops from the 43rd Infantry Battalion clashed with members of the communist New People’s Army. Sagdullas was the secretary general of the militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan in Eastern Visayas up until he joined the New People’s Army in 2020. He was elected chair of the Student Council at UP Tacloban in 2016 when he was also elected as chairperson of the Katipunan ng mga Sangguniang Magaaral sa UP, the alliance of student councils in the UP system until 2017. The body of Sagdullas was identified by alias Kurati, a former rebel who operated in the area. Alias Kurati also identified Sagdullas’ companions who also died in the clash as Geraldine Teopinto alias Luz, the Finance Officer; Abigail Padula Baselga alias Moana, Medical Officer; and Vicente Termo. Sensing the arrival of the patrolling troops, the NPAs fired upon the soldiers resulting in a 15-minute exchange of gunfire and another five-minute encounter during pursuit operations. Capt. Jefferson Mariano, spokesperson of the AFP’s Joint Task Force Storm, said the death of Sagdullas in the encounter is proof of how the NPA, the Communist Party of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front has deeply infiltrated the student sector at UP Tacloban. “He is a proof of how the youth and students are being deceived into joining the armed struggle,” Mariano said. Mariano added that the death of Sagdullas is a big setback for the CPP-NPA-NDF in Eastern Visayas as he is a known personality of Bayan, which is suspected to be a legal front of the communist movement. According to the military report, the encounter happened when the soldiers responded to reports from civilians that a group of armed people were conducting extortion activities asking for food and materials from the residents in the outskirt community of said barangay. The group was found to be remnants of the of Sub-Regional Guerilla Unit, Sub-Regional Committee Emporium of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee led by a certain Mario Sevillano alias “Durok”, a notorious guerilla leader who, allegedly, had figured in numerous atrocities in the areas of Northern Samar. Sensing the arrival of the patrolling troops, the NPAs fired upon the soldiers resulting in a 15-minute exchange of gunfire and another five-minute encounter during pursuit operations. The troops seized two high-powered firearms and two low-powered firearms, several magazines with live ammunition for a 5.56mm rifle and cal.45 pistol, voluminous subversive documents, electronic gadgets and two backpacks filled with personal belongings. Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez, chair of the Regional Peace and Order Council, conveyed his sympathies and condolences to the families of the deceased especially to the Sagdullas family, who is a native of the city. Romualdez had coordinated with the 803rd Infantry Brigade, where the cadavers were brought to, for the transfer of Sagdullas’ body to his family for mourning. “I feel sad for the families, kaya kayong ibang nandiyan pa sa movement, isipin niyo ang mga naiiwanan ninyo. Feeling ninyo itong ginagawa ninyo ay talagang may ipinaglalaban kayo. Pero sa bandang huli ang mas nakakaawa dito ang mga iniiwanan ninyo. ‘Yong parents pinagpawisan para mabigyan ka ng edukasyon, maraming talent and all tapos, what happened? It is really sad, I hope this will stop, and this will end very soon,” Romualdez said. (That is why, those of you still in the movement, think about your loved ones. You may feel you have something to fight for but the truth is you will only be leaving your loved ones grieving. Your parents, who have sacrificed a lot to give you poper education are the real victims here.) The post Former UP student leader killed after clash appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Central, Western Visayas insurgents ‘leaderless’
CEBU CITY — The Visayas Command revealed on Sunday that the New People’s Army in Central and Western Visayas is now left without a head following the death of their top leader, Rogelio Posadas. To recall, Posadas died in an armed encounter with troops of the 94th and the 62nd Infantry Battalions in the boundaries of Isabela and Binalbagan in Negros Occidental on Thursday and VisCom said that the death of Posadas left the NPA, the Communist Party of the Philippines’ armed wing, and the National Democratic Front operating in Negros Island, Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor “leaderless” and will no longer have “clear operational direction on the ground.” It added that Posadas’ death will further contribute to the leadership vacuum that the organization has been suffering. “Justice is served to Mr. Posadas. The CPP-NPA-NDF can never run away from the atrocities that they have committed against our country and people. Sooner or later the long arm of the law will be able to catch up with them,” Viscom said. Posadas, who carried the alias “Putin,” is the top leader of Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor and secretary of the Unified Regional Committee for Negros island, Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor. The military has tagged him responsible for various atrocities and illegal activities in the region, including assassinations, extortions, kidnappings, arsons, and other forms of violence against innocent civilians and government personalities. The 303rd Infantry Brigade said Posadas’ body was positively identified through the help of informants and former rebels who have surrendered to 94IB. Posadas’ death came less than a year after Juanito Magbanua, the NPA regional commander in Negros island, was also killed in a clash with the 94IB in October 2022. Viscom urged the remaining members of the communist rebels in Central and Western Visayas regions to surrender and “return to the fold of the law while there is still time.” The post Central, Western Visayas insurgents ‘leaderless’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
‘Tank’ crushes Garcia
LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Unbeaten Gervonta “Tank” Davis handed Ryan Garcia the first defeat of his career on Saturday, stopping the Californian with a paralyzing body shot in the seventh round of their marquee fight in Las Vegas, Nevada. Davis, who has won five world titles in three weight classes, added another highlight reel knockout to his collection as he improved to 29-0 with 27 knockouts. Garcia was making the running in the second round when Davis drilled him with a left overhand counterpunch to send him to the canvas. The knockout blow was blindingly fast as Davis took advantage of an advancing Garcia, landing another heavy left to Garcia’s ribcage. After staggering back, Garcia steadied and attempted to square up before dropping to one knee — unable to rise before referee Thomas Taylor counted to 10. “It was a good shot,” Davis said. “I thought he was going to get up. I was looking at him, trying to tell him ‘get up.’” “And he just shook his head.” There was no title on the line, nor any battle for dominance in the 135- or 140-pound classes. But the fight at a 136-pound catchweight, which headlined a pay-per-view card and drew an enthusiastic, celebrity-studded crowd to the T-Mobile Arena, lived up to the hype generated by the clash of unbeatens. “I am the face of boxing,” said Davis, who had never headlined a pay-per-view card despite earning world titles at super-featherweight, lightweight and super-lightweight. “I just saw Rihanna perform at the Super Bowl and I was like that was going to be me one day, and here we are,” he said. “It definitely matches the dream. But the job’s never done til I retire. So I’m going to keep my head down, stay humble and continue to work.” Garcia, meanwhile, will have to go back to the drawing board after falling to 23-1 with 19 knockouts. The 24-year-old’s hand speed and punching power make him a formidable opponent, and his massive social media presence has made him a mainstream celebrity, but he has yet to earn a top-flight world title. After a testy build-up to the bout, Garcia was gracious in defeat, calling it “an honor” to be in the ring with Davis. “He just caught me with a good shot,” Garcia said. “I just couldn’t recover. Snuck under me and caught me good.” He said he didn’t want to elaborate, but when asked agreed he couldn’t breathe. “I was going to get back up, but I just couldn’t get up,” he said. Davis stops Garcia to remain unbeaten in marquee bout
Unbeaten Gervonta Davis handed Ryan Garcia the first defeat of his career on Saturday, stopping the Californian with a paralyzing body shot in the seventh round of their marquee fight in Las Vegas, Nevada. Garcia was making the running in the second round when Davis drilled him with a left overhand counterpunch to send him to the canvas. The knockout blow was blindingly fast as Davis took advantage of an advancing Garcia, landing another heavy left to Garcia's ribcage. After staggering back, Garcia steadied and attempted to square up before dropping to one knee -- unable to rise before referee Thomas Taylor counted to 10. "It was a good shot," Davis said. "I thought he was going to get up. I was looking at him, trying to tell him 'get up.' "And he just shook his head." There was no title on the line, nor any battle for dominance in the 135- or 140-pound classes. But the fight at a 136-pound catchweight, which headlined a pay-per-view card and drew an enthusiastic, celebrity-studded crowd to the T-Mobile Arena, lived up to the hype generated by the clash of unbeaten. "I am the face of boxing," said Davis, who had never headlined a pay-per-view card despite earning world titles at super-featherweight, lightweight and super-lightweight. "I just saw Rihanna perform at the Super Bowl and I was like that was going to be me one day, and here we are," he said. "It definitely matches the dream. But the job's never done til I retire. So I'm going to keep my head down, stay humble and continue to work." Garcia, meanwhile, will have to go back to the drawing board after falling to 23-1 with 19 knockouts. The 24-year-old's hand speed and punching power make him a formidable opponent, and his massive social media presence has made him a mainstream celebrity, but he has yet to earn a top-flight world title. After a testy build-up to the bout, Garcia was gracious in defeat, calling it "an honor" to be in the ring with Davis. "He just caught me with a good shot," Garcia said. "I just couldn't recover. Snuck under me and caught me good." He said he didn't want to elaborate, but when asked agreed he couldn't breathe. "I was going to get back up, but I just couldn't get up," he said. Wild win carries 76ers to 3-0 lead over Nets
The Philadelphia 76ers beat Brooklyn 102-97 on Thursday in a rugged clash that featured two ejections and a controversial kick from Joel Embiid and moved the Sixers one win away from a sweep of their NBA first-round playoff series. The 76ers, down by five with 2:15 remaining at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, surged home to take a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference series, the Nets well aware that no NBA team has come back from 3-0 down to win a series. Embiid, Philadelphia's MVP candidate, scored just 14 points but pulled down 10 rebounds and produced a crucial block with eight seconds remaining and Philadelphia up by two. Plenty of pundits will argue he should have been out of the game by then, but Embiid wasn't ejected when he aimed a kick from the floor at Nic Claxton's groin as the Nets player stepped over him in the first quarter. Sixers star James Harden was tossed late in the third quarter after piling his shoulder into Royce O'Neale's body on a drive to the basket. And Brooklyn's Claxton was ejected early in the fourth when he picked up a second technical foul for taunting Embiid. "We stayed together," Embiid said of the key to the hard-fought victory. "We kept playing through everything that was going on." Tyrese Maxey keyed the late surge, scoring 10 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter. His step-back three-pointer with 44.7 seconds left gave the Sixers a 99-96 lead. Spencer Dinwiddie cut the deficit by one with a free throw and looked headed for a game-tying layup when Embiid soared up to reject the shot and the Sixers held on. Mikal Bridges led the Nets with 26 points and Dinwiddie added 20, but Brooklyn are in danger of being swept for the second straight season. Embiid, who went to the locker room briefly in the first quarter and could be seen limping later in the game said that despite their commanding lead the Sixers need to be better in Saturday's game four. "Tonight was probably our worst night," he said. "I wasn't good at all, so I'm going to be better." In other games Thursday, the defending champion Golden State Warriors tried to claw out of a 2-0 hole when they hosted the Sacramento Kings. The Warriors were without star Draymond Green, who was suspended one game after stamping on Sacramento's Domantas Sabonis in game two. The Los Angeles Clippers were without injured Kawhi Leonard as they hosted the Phoenix Suns in game three of their Western Conference series. The teams split the first two games in Phoenix.
