Celebrating bikes with Tour de McDo
After the success of its first Tour de McDo, McDonald’s Philippines hosts its second community bike ride in celebration of World Bicycle Day. The latest ride brought together several cycling communities and personalities simultaneously in three key areas across the country — Pampanga, Intramuros and Tagaytay. Tour de McDo is a multiple-stage bike challenge introduced under McDonald’s Green and Good campaign — the QSR giant’s initiative to do better for the environment by implementing sustainable and alternative solutions in their restaurants and operations. Through Tour de McDo, McDonald’s encourages its customers to explore a healthier lifestyle for themselves and the environment, while also highlighting various scenic cycling routes passing through McDonald’s stores equipped with bike-friendly features. Earlier this year, Tour de McDo’s first round highlighted McDonald’s fifth flagship Green and Good store — the McDonald’s Nuvali, Sta. Rosa branch. McDonald’s Nuvali, the QSR giant’s 700th store nationwide, boasts of bike-friendly features, utility-efficient solutions and green building solutions. Aside from its sustainable restaurant innovations, the strategic location of the store makes it an ideal stop for the strong cycling community in Nuvali. Three new scenic routes The sophomore ride now features three new scenic routes to cater to the different levels of cycling: Intramuros, Manila for the beginner route (20km); Clark, Pampanga for the intermediate route (34km); and Tagaytay for the advanced route (48km). Almost 100 participants joined the event and received Tour de McDo kits, which include an exclusive Tour de McDo Dri Fit shirt, Tour de McDo limited-edition stickers, and a McDonald’s breakfast meal, all for free. “For a long time, our McDonald’s stores have played an integral role in many bike rides as a stopover or pit stop. This has allowed us to find more ways to bring together the interests of our customers and care for the planet, under our Green and Good campaign. By promoting sustainable active mobility through Tour de McDo, we hope to encourage more people to get on a bike, so we can collectively do our part in lessening CO2 emissions,” shared McDonald’s Philippines president and CEO Kenneth S. Yang. McDonald’s stores featured in the various routes were McDonald’s Quirino Mabini, McDonald’s Clark CM Recto Pampanga, McDonald’s Porac Pampanga, McDonald’s Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, and McDonald’s Delos Reyes, Tagaytay all offering bike-friendly features such as a Bike & Dine facility, so that cyclists can dine in while their bikes are kept safe. The stores also opened dedicated Bike Repair Stations offering free use of tools for any basic repairs. The post Celebrating bikes with Tour de McDo appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

10 Metro Manila officials in study tour of bike-friendly Netherlands
Filipino bicycle community, rejoice: Metro Manila mayors are taking you seriously. At least enough to fly to the Netherlands to study how the nation became the most bicycle-friendly country. Top city officials represented the Metro Manila Development Authority in a study tour of the European nation that has integrated the use of bicycles into its daily life as well as in its culture. Since the 1920s, the Netherlands developed the bicycle culture and the bike has become “the patriotic means of transportation.” There, traffic rules take cyclists into consideration that they don’t have to wear helmets. Infrastructure is also planned out with bicycles in mind. The Metro Manila city officials also sought to learn things about water management, flood control, inclusive and sustainable mobility, and circular economy. The official delegation includes Mayor Joy Belmonte of Quezon City, Mayor Ruffy Biazon of Muntinlupa, and other officials from San Juan, Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Pasay City, Valenzuela, Mandaluyong, and Pateros The officials visited two modern bicycle parking facilities built under canals and rivers in Amsterdam. One is the Stationsplein Underwater Bike Parking Facility which opened on 26 January. It is the largest bicycle parking facility in the city. It can store almost 7,000 bicycles. Taking four years to build at a cost of 65 million euros or approximately P3.67 billion, the bike garage was constructed under the river in front of the Amsterdam Central Train Station. The city officials also visited another underwater parking that can accommodate 4,000 bikes along IJ Boulevard in Amsterdam. Biazon cited the design which allows easy parking and promotes cycling as “last-mile transportation” for train commuters. Belmonte said there are a lot of pointers she can apply for Quezon City which has the largest bicycle road network in the country with 93 kilometers of bike lanes. Quezon City has also installed bike ramps on 40 footbridges and underpasses, milestones already for the local bike community but still a long way to go compared to that of the Netherlands. Based on Dutch Cycling Embassy data, roughly 63 percent of Amsterdam citizens ride a bike daily on 767 km of cycle paths and bicycle lanes throughout the city. The Netherlands has more bicycles than people, with over 22 million bicycles for its 18 million residents. Bicycles saw a massive popularity rise during the pandemic, causing improvements in the infrastructure, especially along Edsa, Macapagal Ave., C5 and Ayala Ave. In 2021, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Works and Highways completed 313.12 kilometers of bike lanes passing through 12 cities in Metro Manila. In total, the country now has 497 km of bike lane network that can handle 1,250 cyclists per hour per meter of bike lane. According to the DPWH, there is a plan to build 1,778 km more bike lane projects across the entire country. Bike riders press safer roads for all
One death too many. About 88 cyclists held Saturday a “mass mobility ride” to honor hero traffic enforcer Jeffrey Antolin who died last month in a freak road accident while saving a pedestrian. Calling themselves Mobility Advocates for People-Centered Streets, the bikers rode from the Philippine Science High School at Agham Road to the Ayala Cloverleaf. Antolin died last 23 March when he got run over by a truck along A. Bonifacio Avenue in Quezon City after pushing a pedestrian away from the path of the vehicle. Citing statistics that bicycle owners in the country outnumber car owners by 4 to 1, the group expressed surprise that the government has not updated “car-centric infrastructures and regulations.” They pushed accommodating along roads both pedestrians and non-motorized road users like bikers and scooter riders. Alternative mobility through the use of bikes and scooters is an environmentally sustainable means of transportation if road safety for all users can be assured, they added. The mass ride, they said, is not just to honor Antolin but to press the need for all people to share the road, stop reckless driving and for authorities to implement road regulations. “Recklessness while driving should not be tolerated, and road use and safety policies should be reviewed and properly implemented,” they said in a statement. The cyclists belonged to the Make It Safer Movement, or MISMO, QCklista and PARA, short for Advocates for Inclusive Transport and Road Safety Awareness Campaign. Antolin, 35, was directing traffic flow when a pedestrian did not heed his hand signal not to cross. Seeing that the truck would hit the pedestrian, Antolin pushed the pedestrian out of harm’s way, but he was in turn hit by the truck. The traffic enforcer was pulled from under the truck and was rushed to the MCU Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. The truck driver, Joel Dimacali of Tondo, Manila was arrested and charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. Cyclists bike for road safety in QC
"One death is one too many." With this rallying cry, some 80 cyclists in the metropolis conducted a "mass mobility ride" Saturday afternoon in honor of Jeffrey Antolin, the traffic enforcer killed last month in a freak road accident while trying to save a pedestrian. The activity, themed "Road Safety Now! A Memorial Bike Ride for Hero Traffic Enforcer Jeffrey Antolin," saw the bikers who called themselves Mobility Advocates call for "people-centered streets." Cyclists belonging to the Make It Safer Movement, QCklista and PARA-Advocates for Inclusive Transport for Road Safety Awareness Campaign joined the bike ride that started in front of Philippine Science High School in Agham Road, Quezon City at 3 p.m. The cyclists pedaled up to the Ayala Cloverleaf where a small program was held in honor of Antolin, who was killed on 23 March 2023 while saving a pedestrian from a reckless car driver along the intersection of A. Bonifacio Avenue. The cyclists said the incident "depicts a persistent issue on road safety." "With the latest statistics showing bicycle owners in the country outnumbering car owners by 4 to 1, it is still surprising that the government has not caught up with updating its car-centric infrastructures and regulations to accommodate both pedestrians and non-motorized road users like bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters, etc," the group said in a statement. Their movement, they added, is meant to promote alternative mobility as an environmentally sustainable means of transportation and to advocate for road safety. The mass ride, the group stressed, is not just to commemorate the untimely death and heroic act of Antolin and promote the importance of road safety, "but to instill in the minds of all road users what it means to share the road, that recklessness while driving should not be tolerated and that road use and safety policies should be properly reviewed and implemented." Bong Go’s office conducts relief activity for fire victims in Pasig City
The Office of Senator Bong Go visited Barangays Sta. Lucia and Kalawaan in Pasig City on Friday, 14 April, to provide assistance to fire victims. On the same day, Go personally aided fire victims from Brgy. Pinagbuhatan in the city. In a video message, Go encouraged the beneficiaries to make use of the services provided by Malasakit Centers across the country in the event of medical emergencies or other medical-related concerns. In Pasig City, the Malasakit Center is located at Rizal Medical Center. The Malasakit Center is a one-stop shop where particularly poor and indigent patients can conveniently apply for medical assistance from the relevant agencies. Go is the principal author and sponsor of the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019. To date, the Malasakit Centers program has assisted over seven million Filipinos nationwide, according to the Department of Health. The senator's team provided grocery packs, vitamins, masks, meals, and shirts to 64 affected families at the Ismar Gym in Kalawaan. They also gave away bikes, shoes, and balls for volleyball and basketball to select individuals. Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development provided the fire victims with financial assistance to help hasten their recovery. “Importante po walang nasaktan, wala pong namatay. Ang pera po’y kikitain natin subalit ‘yung perang kikitain ay hindi po nabibili ang buhay. A lost life is a lost life forever kaya mag-ingat po kayo. Mga kababayan ko, magtulungan ho tayo. Pilipino tayo, kilala tayong nagtutulungan. At huwag ho kayong mawalan ng pag-asa... ang importante po buhay tayo,” he encouraged. Meanwhile, Go, who chairs the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, has reiterated his commitment to supporting the establishment of additional Super Health Centers throughout the Philippines. Through the collective efforts of fellow lawmakers, enough funds have been allocated for the DOH's Health Facilities Enhancement Program to build 307 Super Health Centers in 2022 and 322 in 2023. The DOH, which is the lead agency in implementing the program, identifies the strategic locations for the construction of these centers. Super Health Centers provide a range of services, including database management, outpatient care, birthing services, isolation facilities, and diagnostic services such as X-ray and ultrasound scans. They also have on-site pharmacies and ambulatory surgical units. As Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance and an advocate for quality healthcare services, Go likewise supported several initiatives for the Rizal Medical Center, such as the hospital’s improvement and rehabilitation, construction of a seven-story building inside the facility, and acquisition of medical equipment. Finally, the senator thanked all of the local officials who stepped up and exerted great efforts to help the affected families after the fire incident. “Salamat po mga kababayan ko, mga taga-Pasig, ingat po kayo. Nandito lang po ang inyong Kuya Bong Go na handang tumulong po sa inyo,” Go expressed.
