A place for good cocktails, great conversations
What could be better than to end a long and busy day or week with a great cocktail surrounded by people you vibe with? Panjee and Mike Singleton, the successful owners behind Banter and Jive, shared how operating a cocktail bar business can still be an enjoyable learning experience while navigating life together. “We like to drink together. That’s how we connect,” Panjee said, looking back on why they thought of setting up a cocktail bar business in the vibrant and buoyant streets of Poblacion. “We just wanted a place where we can sit down, talk to a bartender, have pretty good drinks and just hang out with each other.” Panjee decided to leave her corporate job to go full time into the business, while Mike still keeps his day job as a financial analyst. While they are relatively new to the business, it is not their first time to open a bar. In 2020, the couple ventured into the business, not knowing that the pandemic would go full-blown months later. However, it did not stop the Singletons from taking such risks: “We’ll try a second round. If it doesn’t work, then [we] will never get back to it,” Mike said, adding that they constantly reassured themselves whenever they felt bouts of hesitancy at the thought of trying again. Indeed, the second time’s the charm. As soon as the couple opened Banter & Jive, the dream was realized. [caption id="attachment_192197" align="aligncenter" width="875"] BANTER and Jive signature cocktail drinks.[/caption] Current bar scene With so many bars, pubs and nightclubs in Poblacion, one might say that the competition is fierce — but it’s the complete opposite. In retrospect, the couple agreed that the bar industry in Poblacion has been laidback despite the rise of established bars around the area.“The bar community is very strong. We’re very collaborative with each other, especially the cocktails. We don’t really treat each other as competition… It’s more of uplift[ing] the community together,” Mike said. “We all have a shared goal of increasing cocktail awareness,” he added. There is also a noticeably growing cocktail appreciation in the area. While there is nothing wrong with the classic shot of hard liquor — the oddly satisfying sensation of the burning aftertaste it delivers — new and old customers alike are becoming more adventurous and experimental with their drinks. “We keep on revamping our menu in such a way that people would really accept or like,” Panjee said, adding how they would cater to what their customers like in their menu, giving them a more profound and appreciative drinking experience. Undeniably, the country’s nightlife has always been one for the books — where a spontaneous trip to a bar with the people you cherish ends up being one of the most unforgettable moments in your life. Adding Filipinos’ innate hospitality and natural charm, the Poblacion nightlife perfectly captures the vision of being yourself while connecting with others. “As much work as we have to put into drinks, we also put in a lot of effort in making people feel welcome, especially in an intimate bar like ours. You could remember a really great drink but you will never forget the places where you really felt welcome, [where it] felt like a second home,” Panjee said. Taking a leap of faith Despite the lack of experience in operating a bar, it did not stop the couple from turning their passions into something bigger than themselves. With Banter & Jive opening early this year, the couple is onto something great as they are soft-opening a new bar next month in Poblacion. “Take the leap… It’s very scary. It’s still scary now, but take that risk. I think it’s also important for you to have a good support system when you do that — take the leap,” Panjee said, continuing that being surrounded by like-minded people who support you definitely takes the fear and hesitancy away. For aspiring entrepreneurs who want to operate their bar business, the couple agreed that now is the best time to materialize your dreams. “Not having experience isn’t a good enough reason for you not to do something. The only way to have experience is to actually experience it. There is no better time than now,” Panjee said. AboitizPower utilities score tech win for A.I. use
An artificial intelligence-enabled software developed by Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower) distribution utilities Davao Light and Power Co. Inc. (Davao Light) and Visayan Electric Company Inc. (Visayan Electric) with Aboitiz Data Innovation Pte. Ltd. gained recognition for helping advance technology and digital transformation in the utilities industry. ADI was awarded the Philippines Technology Excellence Award for A.I. — Utilities in the Asian Technology Excellence Awards 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand for Project A.I. CU (“I see you”), a homegrown idea that began in Davao Light. The project utilizes A.I. to optically scan images of electrical installation components — like those mounted on electrical poles — and check if these align with the records of a distribution utility. After a series of pilot tests in Davao Light, the software was able to identify and tag the asset by its individual and unique compatible unit number which was manually assigned to it beforehand. Each CU represents a grouping of electrical items that a certain electrical asset is composed of. Grouping materials and categorizing assets makes it easier for distribution utilities to identify its infrastructure. Overall, verifying the accuracy of records ensures regulatory compliance, better asset management, operational efficiency, and the continued trust that a distribution utility can deliver justified and cost-effective electricity prices in its franchise area. Reduce manpower The use of A.I. to recognize CUs can also significantly reduce the need for manpower and rendered work hours, allowing team members to dedicate time and effort in other activities. Typically, trained engineers are sent to each electrical installation and visually identify each item installed. “The inspiration for Project A.I. CU goes beyond streamlining asset verification. This initiative serves as a window into how we are leveraging artificial intelligence to transform our operations, making them more efficient and smarter,” said Davao Light Meter Shop Supervisor Mark Anthony Catalan, adding that the idea for Project A.I. CU began in 2019 and was proposed to Davao Light in 2020. Catalan was joined by fellow Davao Light innovators Eric Camerino, Jeffrey Lingatong, Raquel Caro, Russel Bolivar, and Prince Yamyamin in developing Project A.I. CU in its early stages and rejuvenating the search for other possible A.I. applications in the operations of Davao Light, particularly in the aspects of safety, audit and maintenance. Proof of concept The group was able to complete an A.I. model for Project A.I. CU as a proof of concept before turning it over to ADI, the data science and A.I. arm of the Aboitiz Group. In the near future, ADI aspires to refine and scale the project for its full implementation in Visayan Electric and Davao Light. These AboitizPower subsidiaries are the second and third largest distribution utilities in the Philippines, respectively. Once fully implemented, Project A.I. CU is estimated to save both companies millions of pesos in annual operating costs. As such, ADI will also assess its potential use in other AboitizPower distribution utilities. “This award demonstrates the data-driven innovations being applied in AboitizPower and highlights the growing synergies within the Aboitiz techglomerate, which in this case is between our distribution utilities and ADI,” said AboitizPower President and CEO Emmanuel Rubio. “It also reaffirms AboitizPower’s mission of ‘Transforming Energy for a Better World’ as it continues its digitalization and innovation initiative to ensure quality service.” The post AboitizPower utilities score tech win for A.I. use appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

BP chief Bernard Looney resigns ‘with immediate effect’
British energy giant BP said Tuesday that its chief executive Bernard Looney has resigned "with immediate effect", after admitting that he had not been "fully transparent" about historical relationships with colleagues. "Bernard Looney has notified the company that he has resigned as chief executive officer with immediate effect," the company said in a statement, adding that finance chief Murray Auchincloss would act as interim CEO. Looney, 53, is leaving the energy firm after less than four years in the role. BP said that in May last year, its board received and reviewed allegations from an anonymous source relating to Looney's conduct "in respect of personal relationships with company colleagues". Looney disclosed "a small number of historical relationships with colleagues prior to becoming CEO" during the review, it added while noting that no breach of the company's code of conduct was found. However, the board was given his assurances over his disclosures of past personal relationships, as well as his future behavior, according to BP. "Further allegations of a similar nature were received recently, and the company immediately began investigating with the support of external legal counsel," it said, adding that the process was continuing. "Mr Looney has today informed the company that he now accepts that he was not fully transparent in his previous disclosures," BP added. "He did not provide details of all relationships and accepts he was obligated to make more complete disclosure." BP said the board expects all staff to behave in accordance with the company's values. "All leaders in particular are expected to act as role models and to exercise good judgment in a way that earns the trust of others," the company said. Looney has been at BP since joining the British energy behemoth in 1991 and was appointed chief executive in 2020. The company said no decisions had yet been made regarding any remuneration payments. Looney had vowed to reposition BP as a leader in clean energy technologies, and gradually cut oil and gas production to reduce carbon emissions, but environmentalists have criticized the firm for inaction in that regard during his tenure. Like many of its rivals, BP earlier this year unveiled record annual profits for 2022, thanks to soaring oil and gas prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. However, earnings have fallen somewhat from those heights so far this year, as energy prices retreated for much of 2023. Nonetheless, BP said in August it was hiking its dividend and returning $1.5 billion to shareholders by repurchasing stock. Semiconductor industry having a renaissance — player
Even if unharmed by the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic three years ago, the semiconductor industry is fast regaining momentum, and even experiencing a renaissance as proven by a top executive of CIRTEK Electronics Corporation, an independent complete solution provider for subcontract manufacturing of semiconductor devices. In his guest appearance on the DAILY TRIBUNE’s digital show Business Sense, Brian Liu, managing director and CEO of Cirtek Electronics Corp., said the company’s full-year 2022 performance has breached its all-time high performance in 2019. “We reached an all-time high prior to the pandemic in 2019. But because of the effects of Covid-19, world economies closed. Supply chain problems occurred. So, we took a bit of a slowdown during that time frame; 2020 to 2021 was a bit of a slowdown for us,” he said. Renaissance “We do believe that the semiconductor industry is in a renaissance right now where a lot of the supply pool is shifting away from Greater Asia and making its way to Southeast Asia so this should serve as a good tailwind for the semiconductor industry,” he added. According to tradingeconomics.com, semiconductor exports from the Philippines climbed 0.8 percent year-on-year to a seven-month high of $6.70 billion in June 2023, following an upwardly revised 2.4 percent gain in the prior month. Sales grew for electronic products (12.0 percent), other manufactured goods (2.8 percent), ignition wiring sets and other wiring sets used in vehicles, aircraft, and ships (14.6 percent), machinery and transport equipment (11.2 percent), and cathodes and sections of cathodes of refined copper (38.5 percent). By destination, sales increased to China (15.0 percent), Hong Kong (15.9 percent), the US (6.9 percent), the Netherlands (59.4 percent), South Korea (4.4 percent), Malaysia (3.1 percent), and the European Union (23.0 percent). Benefiting from WFH Further, he said the work-from-home arrangements during the pandemic have even generated pent-up demand for chips that they manufacture. “So basically, it is a mix, we keep our portfolio as diversified as possible. But back in the height of the pandemic, radiofrequency and communication chip sets comprised a large volume of our production because of the demand for work-from-home hybrid spaces. This prompted a lot of demand for higher bandwidth and connectivity,” he said. “Some of these chipsets go to the laptops that we work on so as you know demand for laptops also surged during work-from-home setups, and right now we’re seeing an industrial revolution where a lot of traditionally mechanical devices are being electrified,” he added. AI’s help As contentions about artificial intelligence or AI grow in various parts of the world, Liu said AI is beneficial to his industry in terms of improving their production. “Now we are seeing a new need for a new sub-segment such as artificial intelligence to power new automation and new devices through this automated way of machines learning and doing things on their own. This has created new device families as well, especially in the processing space and the hybrid system and packages. We are talking about multi-function chip sets being consolidated into one system. Hence a new product family is being derived,” he explained. Liu maintained that the semiconductor industry will remain a very crucial part of everybody’s lives, seeing that semiconductors comprise the very impetus of technology itself. “So, any gadget, any device, or any equipment would not be able to function without the aid of semiconductors, and because of the continuous evolution of technology and new innovations being created, this catalyzes new semiconductor device families to be continuously created, and that’s why I do believe that semiconductors play a crucial role as the building block of technology itself,” according to Liu. The Cirtek Group harnesses more than 29 years of expertise in the assembly and testing segment of the semiconductor industry and has been accredited and certified by several international quality institutions for the latest quality system standards. Beginning with just three customers in 1984, the company through its subsidiaries has significantly grown its customer base to 42 at present. “We are an independent Filipino semiconductor company, located at the Heart of Laguna Techno Park. Basically, we maintain a very highly diversified portfolio, so we do semiconductors for RF and communications, industrials, aerospace, consumer, system, and packages, and automotive as well,” Liu stated. Bill gives ERC more teeth
The Senate has proposed a bill to establish an Energy Regulatory Commission, or ERC, charter to equip the power sector to become a regulator with more fangs in addressing industry problems. Senate Bill 487 or An Act Enhancing The Governance Structures Of The Energy Regulatory Commission, if enacted into law, gives more power to the ERC in fulfilling its mandate to regulate the energy sector. The birth of ERC came about because of EPIRA or the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001. “But if you read EPIRA, there is much room for improvement especially given the recent developments in the industry, so I am going to push for the creation of the ERC charter,” a senator said. Regulator function enhanced “ERC is one of the most important actors in the energy sector, so we have to make sure that it has enough power to penalize,” he added. The senator noted that both Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla and ERC chairperson Monalisa Dimalanta agreed that there is a need to revisit the powers of the ERC. Likewise, the creation of the ERC Charter also bodes well with another proposed legislation to rightsize the government bureaucracy. The ERC charter, for instance, would help the regulator properly address completion delays in projects such as transmission projects of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines. He earlier urged the ERC to penalize NGCP for its failure to complete transmission projects on time, leading to disruption in the flow of electricity. According to the ERC, the completion of about 66 transmission projects is currently delayed, excluding six projects of national significance. One is the Mindanao-Visayas interconnection project which was due for completion in 2019. The project will link together all three major Philippine islands to create one grid. “That’s one of the most critical infrastructure projects because we have surplus power in Mindanao of about 200 to 400 megawatts that can be delivered to the Visayas region,” legislator noted. The NGCP was authorized by the ERC to start building the project way back in 2017. It was initially scheduled to be completed in 2020 but it was delayed due to the pandemic. The NGCP holds a 25-year franchise to solely operate the power transmission assets of the government and secure power reserves for contingency. Converge building 3 new data centers for $60M
Fiber internet service provider Converge ICT Solutions, Inc. is investing $60 million to simultaneously build three new data centers in the country to serve the surge in data requirements. In an interview last week, Converge CEO and Co-Founder Dennis Anthony Uy said each site, which will likely be complete in the next two years, will have a maximum capacity of 1,000 racks. “We will build three data centers this year. We now have a site in Angeles, Pampanga, and Quezon City. Usually, they will have 600 racks per site and expandable to 1,000 and it will be within 18 to 24 months,” Uy said. Converge is currently building a P1-billion data center in Cebu with around 300 racks, which is scheduled to be complete by the third quarter of 2024. Data centers are facilities centralizing an organization's shared information technology operations and equipment to store, process, and disseminate data and applications. Since they house critical assets, data centers are important in sustaining the daily operations of a company. Despite the hefty investment needed for the new facilities, Uy said Converge is not yet planning to hold any fundraising activities. “We don’t have any new fund-raising activity, especially now interest rates are so high. We were just lucky to have secured financial support earlier,” he said. Based on the 2023 First Quarter market report by S&P Global Market Intelligence, the Philippines is poised to book a 13 percent compounded annual growth rate in data center operational space between 2020 to 2025. The positive projection was driven by the recent expansion of hyperscalers and significant interests of global enterprises in the country — placing the Philippines on a competitive footing with Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. DoubleDragon opens 45th mall, 7 more by 2024
DoubleDragon Corp. opened its 45th mall property in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte on Friday — cementing its position as a leading community mall developer in the country. In a stock report, DoubleDragon said the recent expansion enabled the company to become the fourth largest mall developer and landlord based on the number of operational malls. The newly opened CityMall-Surigao has 8,608 square meters of gross floor area sitting on a 1.05-hectare of prime commercial land. It is part of the 1.29 million square meters of fully built and completed gross full area in DoubleDragon's diversified portfolio, which already exceeded its one million square meter total GFA target in 2020. “Within the first three years of DoubleDragon’s IPO in the Philippine Stock Exchange last April 2014, we purposely and rapidly acquired the majority of the Company’s landbank for CityMall when land prices in city centers of prime provincial cities were still low,” DoubleDragon chairman Edgar “Injap” Sia II said. Hundreds of prime assets “Today, we have seen exponential value appreciation across the string of prime commercial properties which our DD team is thankful to have acquired a string of hundreds of prime assets across the country early on,” he added. In sustaining its growth momentum, DoubleDragon said it will - complete three more CityMalls, that is, one each in Laguna, Leyte, and Antique within the year. By next year, the company aims to open four more CityMalls - one each in Cavite, Zamboanga, Ormoc, and Ozamiz. Altogether, these are seen to increase the company’s operational mall portfolio to 52 by the end of 2024. DoubleDragon's current 45-mall network began with its first CityMall built in 2015; in all, it took only eight years — two of those covering the Covid-19 pandemic — for the company to put up its 45th mall. Gov’t eyes MILF decommissioning completion ahead of 2025 BARMM parliament election
The government is targeting to complete the decommissioning of the remaining 1,301 Moro Islamic Liberation Front combatants ahead of the first-ever Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao parliament election in 2025, with the third phase of the decommissioning process slated to begin on 3 August. This was announced by Presidential Adviser on Reconciliation, Peace, and Unity, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., during the 2023 post-State of the Nation Address or SoNA forum held in Pasay City on Wednesday late afternoon. “Actually it’s a way earlier because we are targeting to finish the decommissioning before the BARMM election 2025 along with parallel programs of the government for the former combatants,” Galvez told reporters in an interview. The peace adviser noted around 24,600 former MILF combatants have already been decommissioned since the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Reconciliation and Unity as well as Independent Decommissioning Body, began facilitating the first and second phases of the program. A total of 19,345 MILF combatants have availed of the first phase of decommissioning in 2015 and the second phase from 2019 to 2020. At least 5,500 MILF combatants underwent decommissioning until end-December of 2022. Galvez said the decommissioning program comes with the provision of emergency employment, social entrepreneurship projects, and skills development training to the former combatants. “It’s very critical that we build on the peace gains and ensure continuing progress in the BARMM,” he added. Under the decommissioning program, qualified family beneficiaries were also given a Bangsamoro Transitory Family Support Package amounting to P80,000 and P20,000 worth of Livelihood Settlement Grants. This program is part of the normalization track under the Bangsamoro Organic Law—which is designed for the peaceful reintegration of former combatants into their communities with several support packages provided by the concerned national agencies and local government units. CoA flags Barili town over inaccurate records
The Commission on Audit on Wednesday revealed that it has found some discrepancies on the financial statements of the municipality of Barili in Cebu province, citing its “inaccurate” computation of real property taxes and special education tax receivables, resulting into income loss to the government. State auditors said that the submitted 2022 Financial Statements for its Property, Plant and Equipment of the Barili LGU was doubtful and allegedly had unreliable records on road networks. It added that the town failed to conduct an inventory of its infrastructure assets, raising doubts on the existence, accuracy and completeness of items recorded in its PPE account. To recall, the Barili LGU has indicated that it had P343.52 million in PPE representing 70 percent of its declared assets of P489.01 million for 2022. PPE are government assets including land, land improvements, buildings, and other structures, machinery and equipment; transportation equipment; furniture, fixtures and books; leasehold improvements; and other PPE including specialist military equipment, infrastructure assets, and heritage assets. The CoA found deficiencies in the inventory process, including the non-updating of property and PPE ledger cards, and the non-issuance/renewal of acknowledgement receipts for equipment. CoA Circular 2020-006 mandates every local government unit to properly account for all PPE items by conducting physical count, as the PPE usually comprises the largest bulk of the municipality’s assets. The municipality claimed that it conducted a physical count of infrastructure but the inventory was unable to complete the inventory, but state auditors said that Barili’s road network amounting to P148.24 million was unreliable as it failed to separate the cost components of the road network, the non-computation of separate depreciation for each road component, and the error in providing a residual value since no residual value should have been provided. State auditors cited that the road lot component was not recognized and no inventory report was prepared, the local road network property card was not maintained and the LRN system was not disclosed in the Notes to Financial Statements. The CoA said that the Barili LGU violated CoA Circular 2015-008 and International Public Sector Accounting Standards 1 which affected the accuracy of the financial statements. Marcos hits NGCP over delayed transmission projects
President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. has reprimanded the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, the country’s lone transmission system operator, for the delay of numerous projects that could have further improved the power services in the country. “The one grid, one market will enable more efficient transfers and more competitive pricing of electricity throughout the country. However, 68 grid connections are much delayed according to the ERC's (Energy Regulatory Commission) count. We are conducting a performance review of our private concessionaire the NGCP,” Marcos said at his second State on the Nation Address on Monday, 24 July. Thus, the President vowed to look into the NGCP to ensure that “all of its deliverables” starting with the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project or MVIP and the Cebu-Negros-Panay interconnection will be delivered. NGCP is undertaking the P52-billion MVIP, which was supposed to launch within the first half of the year. The MVIP will link together all three major Philippine islands to create one grid. The NGCP was authorized by the ERC to start building the project way back in 2017. It was initially scheduled to be completed in 2020 but it was delayed due to the pandemic. Reacting to the President’s report, the NGCP said it will “concentrate all available resources toward the completion of ongoing transmission projects while expediting others in the pipeline.” “We agree with the President’s sentiments. Even before the SONA, NGCP has already been working towards the vision that he mentioned,” NGCP President and CEO Anthony Almeda was quoted as saying in a press statement. “After hearing it straight from him -- his vision that is completely aligned with ours -- we know we are on the right track and we’re more motivated to complete all our objectives in a prompt manner,” he added. The operator said the MVIP will be “fully energized to 450MW by the third quarter of this year.” Meanwhile, ERC chairperson Monalisa Dimalanta reiterated that the NGCP’s performance review is part of the ongoing regulatory rate reset process. “We expect to complete a significant portion (for years 2016-2020) very soon. We also reported to the President, and included in his address, the efforts regarding ensuring timely implementation of transmission projects,” Dimalanta said in a text message to the Daily Tribune. “Out of the 68 delayed projects identified, ERC already issued a show cause order to NGCP issued on 4 July 2023 for 37 projects requiring explanation for the delay,” she added. The ERC recently ordered the NGCP to explain the delay of more than 30 projects supposed to enhance the country's transmission system. In a show cause order dated 14 June 2023 and issued on 4 July 2023, the ERC pointed out that the NGCP’s approved capital expenditure or capex for projects was not followed. Hence, projects have been delayed. Thus, it required the NGCP to submit a “verified explanation” within 15 days from receipt of the order “why no administrative penalty should be imposed upon it.” According to ERC, some 37 projects with many days delayed ranging from 21 to as high as 2,561 days. Among those projects with a high number of days delayed is the Tuy (Calaca)-Dasmariñas 500-kilovolt Transmission Line Project. The project was supposed to be completed on 11 July 2016, but it remains 82.48 percent complete as of date. Per ERC, the project has been delayed by 2,528 days. The Bataan-Cavite/Metro Manila Transmission Line Project (Phase 1) Feasibility Study is 2,561 days delayed, the ERC added. As mandated by the power regulator, the NGCP should submit a “detailed explanation on the cause of delay per project, as well as the actual timeline of implementation per project.” The NGCP holds a 25-year franchise to solely operate the power transmission assets of the government and secure power reserves for contingency. Vingegaard wins second successive Tour de France
Jonas Vingegaard won his second successive Tour de France on Sunday after Jordi Meeus claimed the final stage honors on the Champs-Elysees in Paris. Denmark's Vingegaard of the Jumbo-Visma team crossed the finish line after the 21-day race 7min 29sec ahead of Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar, the champion in 2020 and 2021. Pogacar's UAE teammate Adam Yates of Great Britain rounded out the top three podium. Vingegaard's winning margin was the largest since 2014 when Italian Vincenzo Nibali took the fabled champion's yellow jersey by 7min 39sec. "I enjoyed fighting for this win with 'Pogi' and Yates, but now I'm just looking forward to having a nice dinner here in Paris with my family," said the champion. "It was a long, hard race and one day ran into another but there's a feeling of being proud and happy. "Winning for the second time is amazing with all the Danish people here. I hope to come back to take a third win, at least try it." Despite finishing runner-up, Pogacar was happy to focus on the positives. "Considering everything it's been a great Tour, I have to be happy with that," Pogacar said after picking up his best young rider jersey for the fourth time. "We have two guys on the podium, and I won two stages and the white jersey. I love cycling," he said. The final stage was won by outsider Meeus of the Bora team, with Jasper Philipsen denied a fifth stage win on this Tour right at the line in a photo finish. "What a wonderful finish, it's been such a high level Tour," said the surprise stage winner. - Cracked - The world's greatest bike race provided tense drama with spectacular backdrops as Vingegaard and Pogacar remained separated by seconds until the Dane edged ahead with a sensational individual time trial last Tuesday. The following day, on a 28km climb to the ski resort of Courchevel, Pogacar cracked, shouting "I'm gone, I'm dead" before Vingegaard killed off the race with a sensational final climb. The event had been billed as a showdown between the defending champion Vingegaard and Pogacar, who has won the Tour twice and now come second twice. Tour director Christian Prudhomme used boxing terms to describe the struggle. "They went 15 rounds and then there was a punch in the gut, a knee on the floor and a knock out punch," he said Sunday. All time great Eddy Merckx told AFP the pair had delivered a thrilling show. "Pogacar is a more complete rider, but in the high mountains at least, Vingegaard remains the stronger," he said. "I don't know what happened to me. I took on too much this year and after two weeks I started to look as white as this shirt," said runner-up Pogacar, pointing to his best under-25 rider's white jersey. Pogacar started well enough, taking minor advantages in the Basque hills until Vingegaard attacked on the first mountain stage in the Pyrenees to take the overall leader's yellow jersey. And while Pogacar clawed back a few seconds here and there, the defending champion never relinquished the lead all the way to Paris. Runner-up in 2021, the softly-spoken Vingegaard was the only rider to challenge the Slovenian prodigy in the high mountains. In 2022, he went one step higher and won the title at altitude, and it proved to be the case again in 2023, but with a Tour of such poise and dominance his claim to be targeting a third straight title must be taken seriously. "The Tour de France is the greatest race in the world," beamed the 26-year-old. "There's something so special about it and I can tell you I'll be back again next year to try and win it again." dmc/dj © Agence France-Presse The post Vingegaard wins second successive Tour de France appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Kudos to Dr. Eric Olivarez
Doctor of Education and registered nurse Eric Olivarez, the mayor of Parañaque City, focusing solely on rendering good public service, transformed his department heads, led by City Administrator Voltaire de la Cruz, into a spectacular performance management machine increasing in the process the city’s assets and equity by 63.5 percent — from P16.63 billion in 2021 to P26.88 billion in 2022 — an increase of a whopping P10.25 billion after only 12 months as mayor. Dr. Eric, upon the advice of the resident auditor and assisted by the city’s chief accountant, began transferring land titles in the name of the city, under Section 148 of CoA Circular 92-386 dated 20 October 1992, which provides that, “Every local executive shall be immediately responsible for the proper and effective use and management of real estate that all real properties under his responsibility be registered under the Torrens Title System and safeguarded from squatters, unlawful occupants, or the like.” A total of P11,779,238.44 representing capital gains tax of P9,360,380.44 and documentary stamp taxes of P2,418,258.03 was utilized for the transfers of title, charged against an appropriation of P45,000,000, leaving an unexpended balance of P33,220,761.56. Transferring land titles in the name of the city is a tedious, delicate and serious matter oftentimes hindered by legal constraints. Chief accountants are reluctant to go into this process without the able guidance of a competent and experienced auditor whose expertise and knowledge based on law and jurisprudence is necessary. The Office of the Auditor recommended and management agreed that the general service office should complete the process of transferring the land titles in the name of the city, maintain properly and regularly the inventory of land titles, and ensure the safeguarding of the same. To clinch the whopping increase in assets and equity of the city, the City Accounting Office immediately effected adjustments to numerous entries to correct the over/understatement of accounts due to the implementation of CoA Circular 2020-008, or the One-Time Cleansing of PPEs, misclassification of accounts, and other errors in the recording of transactions. But Dr. Eric’s first love is taking care of the children of Parañaque City. The Commission on Audit gave Dr. Eric high marks for the Local Council for Protection of Children for which the city’s project/program/activities had a total budget of P21,442,822.92. Of the total budget, 79.24 percent of this budget was utilized resulting in the successful implementation of the program, affirming Dr. Eric’s natural skill as a registered nurse. In addition to repeating last year’s unmodified opinion on the fairness of the presentation of the financial statements of the City of Parañaque for this calendar year ended 31 December 2022, CoA also accorded the city government this recognition, a reason for the elation of the people of Parañaque City: “We acknowledged and commended the positive response of the management on our current year’s audit observation memorandum. The audit areas of these recommendations are part of the audit thrusts for CY 2022 which were already undertaken,” CoA stated. An unmodified opinion accorded by the auditor on the fairness of the presentation of the financial statements of the city for the calendar year ended 31 December 2022 means that the financial statements were prepared by the city management in all material respects in accordance with the applicable financial reporting framework. In the next episode, read more about Dr. Eric’s success, and the recognition-worthy performance of the city accountant and the resident auditor, as instruments of good local governance. Garland denies Hunter Biden probe being interfered with
US Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday denied allegations that the Justice Department interfered with an investigation of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter. Prosecutors announced earlier this week that Hunter Biden had reached a plea deal on minor tax and gun charges with the US Attorney in his home state of Delaware. Hunter Biden is due to appear in court on 26 July after agreeing to plead guilty to two federal tax charges and admitting to illegally possessing a gun despite having a history of drug use. A whistleblower from the Internal Revenue Service alleged in testimony before the Republican-led House Ways and Means Committee released this week that the Justice Department headed by Garland had slowed the probe into Hunter Biden. Garland, in remarks to reporters on Friday, noted that the US Attorney in Delaware, David Weiss, had been appointed by former President Donald Trump, a Republican. Garland said he personally had given Weiss the authority to continue his investigation into Hunter Biden and “prosecute any way in which he wanted to.” Joe Biden’s son is also facing one count of illegal possession of a firearm. “I don’t know how it would be possible for anybody to block him from bringing a prosecution given that he has this authority,” the attorney general said. “He was given complete authority to make all decisions on his own.” Hunter Biden, 53, is the only surviving child of Joe Biden’s first marriage, which tragically ended in 1972 when his wife and baby daughter were killed in a car accident. Hunter Biden’s business dealings, especially during the time his father was vice president, have been a major target of Joe Biden’s political opponents, and continue to be probed by congressional Republicans. Hunter Biden became a regular focus of Trump’s attacks ahead of the November 2020 presidential election for his work in Ukraine and China. In his memoir, “Beautiful Things,” Hunter Biden insisted he has never done anything unethical and dismissed allegations that he displayed a lack of judgment by accepting a lucrative position on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma while his father was Barack Obama’s vice president. Under the plea agreement, Hunter Biden is unlikely to face prison time but will be sentenced to probation. According to the charges, Hunter Biden, a Yale-trained lawyer and lobbyist, failed to file his tax returns on time on earnings of more than $1.5 million for 2017 and 2018. In both years, he owed more than $100,000 in taxes on those earnings. Hunter Biden is also facing one count of “possession of a firearm by a person who is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance.” Hunter Biden has admitted having drug problems in the past and detailed his struggles with crack cocaine in his 2021 memoir, released months after his father took office. Hunter Biden and his wife attended a state dinner at the White House on Thursday for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Asked about his attendance at the event, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said “it is not uncommon for family members to attend events at the White House.” The post Garland denies Hunter Biden probe being interfered with appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Jeepney phaseout haphazard planning
In January 2018, during the Duterte period, the Department of Transportation tried to fast-track the jeepney phaseout plan, the so-called Transport Modernization Program or TMP, imposing deadlines to complete the phaseout by 2020. By November 2019, DOTr realized it was dreaming, and it finally dropped the plan. You cannot implement such a massive plan in so short a time. Not only was the time frame short, the plan was haphazardly done, with a lot of gaps. Either there was pressure from Malacañang or the DoTr was simply too gung-ho about it. At the time, there were about 300,000 jeepneys nationwide, on which a staggering 1.5 million, at an average of five persons per family, were dependent for their sustenance. Dislocating and rehabilitating such a huge number of drivers for new jobs would have been next to impossible, considering our high unemployment rate. This would have led to a social crisis inviting anarchy and unrest. We are not even talking about thousands of jeepney operators and dozens of affected downstream industries, such as jeepney manufacturers. The first to scream against the obsolescence of the jeepney and the pasaway (undisciplined) jeepney drivers were those who would benefit from the phaseout, namely, the oligarchs and powerful politicians who, in partnership, would take over the mass transport industry. Right now, they are drooling over the perceived windfall. They are planning secretly and organizing lobbies to influence PBBM and the government to implement mass transport modernization with their vested interests in mind. The pressure on PBBM will be so great and they will offer him a piece of the pie. The more he resists, the bigger the slice. The government will be forced to bear the brunt of mass transport modernization, allotting billions, so that the oligarchs and bureaucrats will spend less. Duterte’s TMP planned to replace current polluting jeepney engines with environment-friendly Euro-4 engines used in Europe. Back in 2019, one Euro-4 engine cost a staggering P1.6 million, beyond the reach of most operators. They would have drowned in debt or abandoned their businesses. Only the oligarchs-bureaucrats could afford this and so they would take over. Converting 300,000 jeepneys to Euro-4 would cost a dizzying P447 billion at 2019 prices. (Source: UPLB scientists interviewed). The Euro-4 is good for rich countries, not for poor countries with little capital. Its evolution was so rapid that Euro-1 to Euro-3 became ridiculously obsolete in so short a time. The Euro-4 is probably already obsolete today. The massive undertaking to convert 300,000 jeepneys may take 10 years, but only if the government borrows millions for the thousands of conversions nationwide. Also, imports may be available only in trickles, not considering that the Euro-4 is discontinued or rendered obsolete by newer versions. Let us assume the Euro series is replaced by better, cheaper technologies from China or even locally appropriate technologies. Present operators may need to get big loans. Only the oligarchs-bureaucrats will be ready to take over the mass transport system quickly. The fares of the modernized jeepneys and new hybrid mini-buses may easily reach four to six times the present rates. Commuters ultimately will bear the brunt of modernization. This does not even consider higher gas prices. Marginal commuters will be the ultimate victims. PBBM is in a dilemma. We are not ready for the massive changes and massive dislocations facing our mass transport system. We should have planned these expansions 10 to 20 years ago. PBBM will have to respond to the violent transport strikes brewing not with truncheons but with workable solutions that will address actual needs. He has very little time. PR and propaganda alone cannot contain the storm. The situation is not that hopeless, however. First, we must avoid quick-fix solutions in panic and come up with long-term solutions. Second, solutions should include funds to support our local inventors and manufacturers to avoid dependence on foreign technologies. Third, we must undertake intense research on alternatives to import-oriented modernizations. Removing the omnipresent jeepney completely is impossible for now. We can perhaps partly remove and partly improve the jeepney gradually. We can start by giving loans to operators to gradually replace their aging jeepneys. The key is to go slow. The age of cheap electric jeepneys may just be around the corner. We can perhaps ask Elon Musk or China to fund cheap e-jeepney engine factories here. Import the factories rather than the finished goods. We can retain local jeepney hybrid designs. That would be the perfect solution. eastwindreplyctr@gmail.com The post Jeepney phaseout haphazard planning appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Influencer who stalked Premier League star Mount spared jail
A social media influencer who admitted bombarding Premier League star Mason Mount with messages in a four-month stalking campaign after he broke off their relationship was spared jail on Tuesday. Orla Melissa Sloan, 21, was instead told to pay the England midfielder £300 ($383, 350 euros) compensation after last week pleading guilty to stalking him and his former teammate Billy Gilmour. She also admitted at Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London to harassing fellow Blues star Ben Chilwell and was ordered to pay him £300, and will pay Gilmour £500. Chairwoman of the bench Alison Gowman said the Instagram influencer, who called herself "Devil Baby", had engaged in "sustained and deliberate attempts to harass and stalk" the footballers. She received a 12-week prison term, suspended for 18 months, and must complete 200 hours of unpaid work. The court heard she slept with Mount after they met at a party at his England teammate Chilwell's home in November 2020. Prosecutor Jason Seetal said they stayed in contact for around six months before Mount "decided that the relationship was not going to progress". "Upon informing Miss Sloan of this he has been subjected to a bombardment of messages," he said. "He began asking her to stop messaging him before blocking the number. "He then began to receive messages from new numbers and each time he would block those numbers there would be messages from a different number." Seetal said a total of 21 different numbers were used to contact Mount and that the 24-year-old player was "concerned she had an obsession or fixation with him and he didn't know what she was capable of". In a statement, Mount said: "Miss Sloan knows roughly where I live and where I train. I'm worried as if she is unable to contact me she might turn up at my training center." The court heard that Scotland midfielder Gilmour, who joined Brighton from Chelsea in September, had initially exchanged messages with Sloan before telling her he did not want their contact to continue and did not have a relationship with her. But she claimed to have become pregnant in allegations described in court as "completely fictitious". Sloan pleaded guilty to causing "serious alarm or distress" by stalking Gilmour and admitted stalking Mount as well as causing harassment to Chilwell. He emphasized his willingness to continue contributing to the city's progress by exploring projects that would further enhance the city's development. “Ako, kung ano ang makakatulong dito, amin bisitahin ang inyong boardwalk. Kung anong proyekto ang makakatulong sa inyong syudad, masaya rin ako na maging parte sa pag-unlad ng inyong siyudad,” he said. Expressing his joy at being a part of Baybay City’s journey towards advancement, Go also praised the ongoing projects in the city for their positive impact on the citizens. He then emphasized that it is not the people who should express gratitude to him, but rather, he who should be grateful for the opportunity to serve the people. Through the resolution, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan recognized his steadfast commitment to public service, noting that real progress and recovery have always been the outcomes of his dedicated endeavors. The resolution also highlights Go's exceptional efforts in assisting Leyte. Notably, his instrumental role in establishing a medical laboratory to handle COVID-19 cases and the establishment of Malasakit Centers at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center and the Ormoc District Hospital were emphasized. These centers serve as a one-stop shop for core agencies providing medical and financial assistance to indigent and financially incapacitated patients. Meanwhile, Go remains resolute in his commitment to improving the accessibility of healthcare services and expanding the construction of more public health facilities throughout the country. During his visit to Baybay City, he visited the ongoing construction of the highly anticipated Super Health Center in the city, which is 90% complete. Face first for OFW entrepreneur
Self-made entrepreneur Marzen Salazar remembers the many moments when she would catch her grandmother in front of the mirror, filling in her eyebrows faded by time. Humans are said to be capable of nearly 10,000 facial expressions. The slightest twitch of facial muscle, the direction of the eye, and the movement of eyebrows all mean a plethora of emotions — the non-verbal cues that make up the unspoken daily chatter. Yet as one grows old, it becomes more difficult to do so; the muscles loosen, but most significantly, the eyebrows thin along with the lashes. “My grandmother always draws about her eyebrows. She would try it but (I) would never be satisfied,” remembers Marzen. “When I was growing up in the '90s, eyebrow tattooing was a popular solution to the fading of the brow for the elderly and people with thin strokes — but even tattoos have their limits.” Today, as Marzen recalls her time growing up in Laguna with her lola, Marzen is gradually and decisively building her own business to provide a better solution for eyebrows, lashes, and other facial care woes. In 2020 during the beginning of the pandemic, Marzen boldly launched Miss Derm — a clinic specializing in eyebrows, lashes, and facial treatment services, including microblading. A relatively new technology for Filipinos, microblading uses small needles to create soft and subtle hair-like strokes and deposit pigment on the skin. It is a form of cosmetic tattooing but, unlike the traditional tattoo that embeds pigment deep into the skin, microblading only injects pigment superficially on the body and thus is only semi-permanent. At Miss Derm, microblading is only done by certified microblading artists. Artists undergo intensive training to provide the highest level of quality and care for customers. More than just a business From one clinic in Makati, Marzen expanded Miss Derm to two more locations: Las Pinas and Quezon City —one additional business address each year. Despite travel restrictions, Miss Derm’s number of patrons have grown through word of mouth, attracted by the quality of premium services to help customers with their facial care needs. “I’ve always been motivated by the fact that the services we do at Miss Derm directly affect our customers’ disposition. If eyes are the windows to the soul, eyebrows and lashes are the frames that help define what you want to express and how you want to be seen. We want to help our customers increase their confidence and wear a brighter face every day,” says Marzen, a former wedding photographer-turned communications manager in Oman. Aside from its popular Elite Brows/Lips Package, Miss Derm offers a wide range of microblading, microshading, eyeliner and blading solutions. Customers will also find a menu of no-needle procedures, including Brow Lamination, Lash Lift, Lash Extensions, and HIFU Skin Tightening for the face, neck and the body. Miss Derm’s complete facial care and skincare solutions prove to be perfect for customers who desire convenience and a highly personalized level of care. At Miss Derm, artists converse with customers about their needs and suggest ways to achieve how they want to look. This level of service and hospitality is the product of Marzen’s entrepreneurial instincts, of putting customers at the heart of the process, and ensuring that employees are taken care of. Despite Marzen’s location in Oman, she has overseen the growth and initial success of Miss Derm with flying colors remotely, flying to Manila to visit the clinics when needed, but talking directly with her clients on a daily basis. “When customers chat on our social media channels for feedback or bookings, they’re likely talking to me. “I always had a passion for talking with customers, especially women. As a wedding photographer in Laguna and Oman, I deal with women on a regular basis. One should listen and be attentive; they know what they want. When you delight them with great service and you build a positive working relationship, they will come back for more and they will treat you like family,” says Marzen. NHA awards house and lot units to Taal volcano affected families
National Housing Authority General Manager Joeben Tai reported on Friday that he led the awarding of house and lot units to 142 families who were affected by the eruption of the Taal Volcano last January 2020 in a ceremony at the Talisay Plains Residences in Talisay, Batangas. Tai said he was joined by Senator Francis Tolentino, Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development Region IV-A Director Atty. Jann Roby Otero, Batangas 3rd District Representative Maria Theresa Collantes, Talisay Mayor Nestor Natanuan, NHA-Region IV Office Regional Manager Roderick Ibañez, and other NHA and local government officials. The affected families, Tai said in a statement, have been residing in different evacuation centers since the Taal volcano erupted three years ago. Of the 142 awardees, 82 families came from the Tumaway evacuation center; 17 from Sta. Maria and 43 from Motorpool. The Regional Office relocated these families on 24 April 2023, and shall continue transferring other families until September 2023. “More than three years have passed since these families became homeless due to a natural calamity. They have been living in the evacuation centers, and it is about time we moved them to a safe and resilient place, to a new house they can call their own,” Tai said. He assured other affected families that the NHA, with the support of the local government of Talisay, Batangas, is doubling its efforts to complete the construction of remaining housing units for immediate distribution to its intended beneficiaries. To the 142 families as awardees, Tai reminded them to take care of their homes and assured them of the quality of the housing units they received. "Sa ating pong mga benepisyaryo sa araw na ito, ang akin lang pong paalala sa inyo ay pagyamanin po ninyo ang inyong mga bagong tahanan. Ito po’y inyong alagaan at ingatan dahil sa haba po ng inyong paghihintay ay may masisilungan na po kayong ligtas at hindi na mangangamba pa sa mga darating na panahon," Tai told the receipients. Meanwhile, the NHA Talisay Plains Residences shall generate 448 housing units. Each unit comprises a 40-sqm lot area with community facilities such as a school, health center, tricycle terminal, market, and livelihood center. Under the Build Better and More Housing Program, Tai said NHA shall continue to coordinate with local government units to fast-track the provision of housing needs and uplift the living conditions of their respective constituents.
