Veteran actress Angie Ferro dies at 86
Angie Ferro, an acclaimed veteran actress of stage, TV and film, has passed on, according to tributes by friends and industry colleagues posted online. She was 86. "Rest in eternal peace, our feisty talented driven theater colleague, our dearest Angie Ferro!," wrote Bohol-based theater director and musician Lutgardo Labad, a stalwart colleague of Ferro in the theater company Philippine Education Theater Association or PETA. "Patay na si Uray Hilway ng Amaya at Lola Igna. My teacher, a friend, ina ng aming teatro. Rest in peace, BB. Angie Ferro," said GMA head writer Suzette Severo Doctolero in her own Facebook post. Doctolero's tribute referenced two of the late-career projects that made Ferro a recognizable face and name to younger TV and movie watchers. In 2011-2023, she was in the cast of GMA7's blockbuster period TV series "Amaya". In 2019, at 82 years old, she was the lead star in the independent film "Lola Igna," for which she would win Best Actress in that year's Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino and garner as well a Best Actress Gawad Urian nomination. Born in Baleno, Masbate, Philippines, Ferro was in landmark films across various decades such as Celso Ad Castillo's "Pagputi ng Uwak... Pag-itim ng Tagak (1978) and Lav Diaz's "Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino" (2004). She won Best Supporting Actress at the FAMAS Awards for "Pagputi ng Uwak..." and was a supporting actress nominee in the 2005 Gawad Urian for "Ebolusyon". In October 2021, she received the Nora Aunor Ulirang Artista Lifetime Achievement Award at the 36th PMPC Star Awards for Movies. She was reported to be in critical condition in May this year, with friends and colleagues rallying for financial support because the actress had no immediate family. NCRPO putting up cybercrime desks in police stations
The National Capital Region Police Office on Wednesday said it is establishing anti-cybercrime desks in all police stations and sub-stations to address the increasing number of cybercrime cases in Metro Manila. NCRPO Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division chief P/Col. Celso Rodriguez said around 233 police officers who have undergone the basic investigation training for cybercrime will be deployed as desk officers at the cybercrime desks to be established in all police stations and sub-stations in the metropolis. “We are going to establish cybercrime desks to cater to all the complainants in all police stations in Metro Manila,” Rodriguez said in an interview during the launching of Police Station Anti-Cybercrime Desks at the Hinirang Hall in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City. The establishment of the anti-cybercrime desks will help speed up response to problems pertaining to cybercrime, Rodriguez added. Rodriguez said that the establishment of the anti-cybercrime desks is in reference to or in connection with the Revised Penal Code wherein local police stations were also authorized to handle this. According to him, the incidents of cybercrime in Metro Manila in the first quarter of 2023 have reached more than 4,000. Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center Executive Director Mary Rose Magsaysay lauded the NCRPO for establishing anti-cybercrime desks in all its police stations. “It should be appreciated by everyone, not only in the government but also the people, because at the end of the day, it’s really the people that we’re trying to secure cyber security in this case,” Magsaysay said. “Whether technology proliferates in the negative or in the positive way, at least the communities had someone to ask what to do–a hand to hold on to, and open heart to reach out to. And that is for the public what is most important,” she added. Nationally, cybercrime cases increased by 300 percent during the pandemic period, Magsaysay said. “And it’s because of the anonymity that it offers,” she added. NBL heads into fourth season as professional entity
The National Basketball League has gone pro. The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) on Wednesday officially announced that it has approved the application of the grassroots league to turn professional. "Gaya ng pinangako namin sa inyo nung nagsimula tayo, ito na ang simula ng ating pagpitas ng bunga," league chairman Celso "Soy" Mercado said. "Ako ay naniniwala na ang ating paglipat going to professional ay napakalaking bagay para sa mga ating mga manlalaro na hanggang ngayon ay hindi pa nabibigyan ng pagkakataon sa mga sulok-sulok ng ating bansa." The NBL, and its counterpart for women, applied for professional status months ago and had no problem whatsoever getting approved. The Paranaque Aces and the Taguig Generals were the first two champions of the grassroots league. At present, there is a pause on play in the third season, which has the likes of De La Salle University standouts Justine Baltazar and Encho Serrano up front and center, due to the continuing COVID-19 crisis. Whenever the fourth season comes along, the NBL would stand as the first pro league to feature Filipino homegrown talents from the provinces, cities, and municipalities they hail from. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
