Hagedorn’s zest for change remembered
Palawan Rep. Edward Hagedorn passed away Tuesday morning, his chief of staff confirmed to the Daily Tribune. He was 76. Hagedorn’s official Facebook page said the lawmaker “died peacefully” but did not reveal the cause of his demise. However, he had previously disclosed his battle with pancreatic cancer. “Cong. Ed’s life speaks volumes, particularly his role as a champion for the environment, tourism, agriculture, and peace and order,” the post read. “His efforts created inclusive spaces for the community and inspired a collective desire for change... Above all, Cong. Ed’s life journey has always been fueled by hope and was void of fear.” Hagedorn’s family had yet to share details of his wake and funeral at press time. Before his stint in Congress, Hagedorn was the long-time mayor of Puerto Princesa City, serving from 1992 to 2013. He took a brief hiatus in 2001 due to term limits. In 2013, he ran for the Senate but lost. In 2022, he ran for congressman of Palawan’s third district and won. The House leadership is “deeply saddened” by the loss of Hagedorn, describing him as a “guiding light and inspiration” to many House members. “As we remember Cong. Ed, let us not only grieve his passing but also celebrate the inspiration he provided. His legacy calls us to continue his work with the same passion and love he demonstrated every day,” Speaker Martin Romualdez said. “To have known and worked with Cong. Ed has been an honor and a privilege. His spirit and legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire us all,” he added. “May we find solace in the immense legacy he leaves behind and the countless lives he touched.” Back in July, Hagedorn was found guilty of malversation of public property by the Sandiganbayan for his failure to turn over government-issued firearms when he was mayor of Puerto Princesa City. Hagedorn maintained he was innocent of the charges. During that period, he revealed that his doctor had recommended a special diet to address his elevated body mass, especially following knee surgery. DAR launches New Agrarian Emancipation consultations
The Department of Agrarian Reform on Monday announced that it held simultaneous public consultations with its stakeholders last 1 September 2023 to obtain inputs to the Implementing Rules and Regulations of the New Agrarian Emancipation Act or Republic Act 11953. The committee tasked by DAR Secretary Conrado Estrella to draft the IRR is chaired by DAR Undersecretary Napoleon Galit with DAR Undersecretaries Luis Pangulayan and Marilyn Barua-Yap, LBP EVP Alex Lorayes, Administrator Gerardo Serios and NIA Administrator Eddie Guillen as members. Representatives of agrarian reform beneficiaries from all 15 regions including the BARMM and concerned farmers groups and civil society organizations participated in the public consultations. Undersecretary for Field Operations Atty. Kazel C. Celeste led the Luzon leg which was held at the Great Eastern Hotel in Quezon City. Undersecretary for Foreign-Assisted and Special Projects Jesry T. Palmares led the Visayas leg which was held in Passi City, Iloilo while Undersecretary for Mindanao Affairs, Amihilda J. Sangcopan led the Mindanao leg which was held at the World Palace Hotel in Ecoland, Davao City. The ARBs and farmers’ groups raised clarificatory questions on the coverage of the NAEA and the process of obtaining condonation and the termination of payment of just compensation to landowners and gave inputs to the DAR officials present during the consultations. The summary of discussions will be submitted to the IRR drafting committee for inclusion in the draft IRR which will be finalized during the full committee meeting with Estrella on 7 September 2023. The journey of the NAEA — the singular bill passed by Congress from among the 22 priority bills of the administration — started barely a year ago when President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed Executive Order 4, Series of 2022, imposing a one-year moratorium on the payment of amortizations by agrarian reform beneficiaries. Cool, Chic and Comfortable Fashion
By Jocelyn Valle and Ann Jenireene Gomez Ralph Lauren is easily one of the most mispronounced designer labels around. For the record, this American icon of fashion is pronounced this way: “Ralf LO-ren,” according to Martin Elmer Santos, the manager of Ralph Lauren’s Polo brand boutique at Greenbelt 5. That’s right, not the French-sounding “Ralf Lo-Rahn.” [caption id="attachment_160185" align="aligncenter" width="853"] AUBREY Miles and Troy Montero.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_160186" align="aligncenter" width="1703"] Kieza Garra and Jeanette Ong.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_160188" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] (FROM left) SSI Group Inc. president Anton Huang, Maricel and Donny Pangilinan, Nikki Huang, Ella and Anthony Pangilinan.PHOTOGRAPHS courtesy of Polo Ralph Lauren[/caption] Santos spoke to Daily Tribune at the store’s recent opening. “We have the different collections here,” he said. Aside from its signature Polo Shirt, which has been around since 1972, Polo Ralph Lauren Men’s line presents several collections to check out in Spring/Summer 2023. There’s the timeless collection called Heritage Icons, as inspired by The Hamptons’ preppy fashion. Another one, The Curator, is a refined sportswear merged with Manhattan’s Gallery tastemakers’ sophisticated gallery look. The Summit collection reinvigorates the Active line with archival styles and technical performance, while the Key West line displays a relaxed island lifestyle. Lastly, a diverse collection of vibrant seasonal fashion is showcased in the South America range. It suits perfectly in warm weather and blends well with exotic adventure vibes. Polo Ralph Lauren Women’s line, on the other hand, has a Spring/Summer 2023 collection that covers Mediterranean, California Modern and Laurel Canyon themes of undeniably timeless and classic style. Likewise not to be missed is the Polo ID collection, which showcases handbags, footwear and other leather goods that embody elegance and comfort. Star-studded affair The opening of the Greenbelt branch (the first at Shangri-La mall and soon at Rustan’s Makati and Solaire), was attended by some of the notable celebrities in the fields of fashion, beauty pageants and show business. They looked cool, chic and comfortable in Polo Ralph Lauren fashion pieces. Actor Maricel Laxa turned up with her husband Anthony Pangilinan, a media practitioner and management consultant, along with their daughter Ella Pangilinan and, later on, with their son, matinee idol Donny Pangilinan. “I want something comfortable and easy to carry. I don’t want anything elaborate. I’m a little bit stylish now because I have kids who are more exposed to fashion.” Aubrey Miles, also an actress and entrepreneur, came at the event with her husband and fellow celebrity Troy Montero. She had this to say on dressing up: “As long as it looks good on me and it flatters my body, I go for that. I’m more stylish when I go out alone. When I’m with Troy, I’m more on the sexy side. With our kids, just a long dress with pockets or with a sling bag.” For his part, Montero said, “I just always want to be comfortable. I think my fashion sense changed over the years. I’m definitely more into comfort than anything else. Once you feel good and comfortable, you can be confident walking around. Nothing makes you more uncomfortable and less confident if it’s not fitted. I like to keep up with the trends and things like that. Like today, I’m wearing this Polo shirt, and I kinda went for the one with a little bit non-traditional.” More actors talked to us about their fashion sense. Max Collins described her fashion sense as “laidback chic.” She explained, “I always wear something that I can move in, but at the same time it’s classic and simple. I love neutral colors as well.” Sofia Andres said she goes for “classic, simple and chic at the same time,” even when she's with her three-year-old daughter. “I only wear pants, shirts, sometimes a coat, blazer, that’s it. That looks amazing.” Young star Kyline Alcantara admitted letting her moods dictate her fashion choices. “Sometimes I’m into street style. Sometimes I’m into classy, simple. It really depends on my mood. I feel that’s what fashion is. It’s art also, how you describe yourself, what makes you feel confident.” Celeste Cortesi, who was crowned Miss Universe Philippines in 2022, declared, “I like wearing anything, depends on where I go. I just want to be comfortable and chic at the same time.” Fashion model-turned-actress and host Phoemela Baranda noted that having a baby (her second in 20 years) has changed her body type and she works around that. “I try to look whatever suits my body type now and I’m comfortable with. So, I’m comfortable with long dresses. But of course a little updated naman. I update with accessories or a body.” Myrza Sison, former top model and now a speaker, host, journalist and certified executive coach had this to say about her fashion sense: “Minimal effort for maximum impact. “So I believe in style, rather than fashion, and I think the more you know yourself, the more you can have personal style. Otherwise, you’re just gonna try every trend and you won’t really present a strong image to the world.” The post Cool, Chic and Comfortable Fashion appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Coping with Trials
Despite the challenges in my life since the 15th of March 2020, I have been able to keep my life quiet and simple. Yes, there were struggles within and without but I was able to cope with those life trials. I am thankful to God that during those times of trial, particularly when we were under those series of lockdowns and community quarantines, I was part of the Civil Relations Group of the Armed Forces of the Philippines figuring out how we could extend a helping hand to those who were in need, to those who were living within the National Capital Region and the nearby provinces. Aside from the series of lockdowns, the NCR was also hit by typhoons where most of the residents of Marikina and other places were deemed helpless due to the rising floodwaters, with no electricity and a minimal food supply. We activated rescue teams composed of enlisted personnel and active reservists of the AFP to reach out to those people in the flooded areas. As the AFP launched its “Kapwa Ko, Sagot Ko!” program under the directive of then-Army Major (now Lieutenant Colonel) Celeste Frank L. Sayson, the eager group commander of the 7th Civil Relations Group (NCR), in coordination with Joint Task Force-National Capital Region. We were able to continue the Community Feeding Program with the mobilization of the AFP Mobile Kitchen where we fed 3,000 people a day and started the ”Raise to 1M Gardens” in the NCR with the vision of helping people in Metro Manila to be resilient in times of calamities, natural disasters, and other emergencies. The restrictions from 2020 to 2022 didn’t stop us from rendering services to the people and I made myself available for religious services to Christians. Lucky to come home: Growing up trans in Brazil can be deadly
Wearing a pink dress that matches the bow in her hair, eight-year-old Agatha flashes a smile that belies all she has been through as a trans child growing up in Brazil. Agatha's mother, Thamirys Nunes, says she vividly remembers the day her daughter, then almost four, asked the question that has changed both of their lives. "Mommy, can I die today and come back tomorrow as a girl?" Nunes, 33, who lives in Sao Paulo, says she knew then they both had a hard road ahead, in a country where the discrimination and dangers facing trans people run deep. Gender dysphoria among children, a sensitive subject in many places, is especially fraught in Brazil, the deadliest country in the world for trans people. There were 118 trans people murdered in Brazil last year, 29 percent of the world total, according to the National Network of Trans People of Brazil. Polarizing politics have only made things worse, in a country where far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) made attacking "gender ideology" a central issue in elections last year, and conservative parties hold a strong majority in Congress. Nunes says she worries every time Agatha leaves the house. "I'm afraid people will call her a freak, hit her or mistreat her," she says. "I feel lucky every time she comes home." Activist mom It was not easy for her to accept Agatha for who she is, admits Nunes. "It wasn't my dream to have a little trans girl. I had lots of doubts," she says. She remembers Agatha playing with dolls and wearing earrings from the time she was small. "She had always been uncomfortable with the gender she was given at birth," she says. A psychologist told Nunes she needed to "reinforce" her child's masculine side, she says. But "trying to reaffirm her masculinity just hurt her," she told AFP. So, overcoming her own prejudices and fears of what people would think, Nunes decided to let Agatha change her name and live as a girl. It has been a transformative experience for Nunes, too. Today, she is an activist for the rights of trans children and teens. Last year, she founded an organization called My Trans Child, which has nearly 600 members. 'Abandoned to their fate' Although Bolsonaro lost last October's elections, replaced by the more tolerant administration of veteran leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, activists say the situation for trans people remains alarming. Aline Melo, a member of Nunes's organization, says things have only gotten worse in recent years. Her son, 14-year-old Luiz Guilherme, is trans. "He's proud of who he is. But he knows he can't always be himself when he leaves the house," she says. Nunes says the lack of government protections to combat rapes and violence against trans youths is "absurd." "We want public policies to protect (this group) that is abandoned to their fate," she says. Forced to leave home Celeste Armbrust still remembers how she felt when she embraced her own gender identity, her eyes lighting up beneath her new pink bangs. "I felt like myself. I felt free," says the 17-year-old trans girl, who began hormone therapy at 16 -- the age authorized under a 2020 decision by Brazil's Federal Council of Medicine. She was brave enough to unveil her new identity at school. But she is afraid to leave the house alone. "She's fearful of being singled out and suffering for it," says her mother, Claudia Armbrust. Brazil, a sprawling country of 214 million people, has just five public centers to assist children and teens on gender identity issues. There is a long waiting list at Sao Paulo University Clinical Hospital, which is helping around 400 such minors. "We help them feel understood," says psychologist Larissa Todorov. But few in Brazil have access to such programs, which struggle with insufficient funding. Carolina Iara, 30, a trailblazing state legislator who is Brazil's first intersex lawmaker, says the country has made progress since her childhood. But not nearly enough, she adds. "There are still trans kids who get kicked out of the house at 13 and have to turn to prostitution," she says. Comelec told to pay partner P15.3M dues
The Commission on Elections has been demanded to pay P15.3 million worth of unpaid dues to Impact Hub Manila over its services during the lead-up to the 2022 National and Local Elections. This included the scrapped town hall debates scheduled on 30 April and 1 May last year at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila. Legal communication from Atty. Ma. Karla Denise Frias, legal counsel to Impact Hub Manila and its founder, Ma. Celeste Eden Rondario, dated 27 April gave Comelec five days to settle its due or be faced with legal action. "Please note that failure to respond or to make a payment arrangement within the next five days upon receipt of this notice will leave us with no other option but to avail of the legal remedies under the law to recover the debt and to protect the country's interest," the letter read. Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said that the poll body, through the Education and Information Department, received the letter on 8 May. In reaction to this, Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said that they will be creating an investigating panel to address the issue, adding that another panel has already submitted a report on this previously. "The panel already submitted a report several months ago. However, the En Banc returned it to the body with the instructions to clearly pinpoint the specific laws and provisions involved, the responsibilities if there be any of certain mentioned individuals, and more detailed recommendations based on the facts and the laws applicable," Garcia said. He also confirmed that the poll body has paid “not a single cent” to Impact Hub Manila prior to the legal move by the latter.
