Aboitiz Group furthers ‘Great Transformation’ into 2023
The Aboitiz Group has seen exceptional performance in the first half of 2023, showcasing its "Great Transformation" into the Philippines’ first techglomerate. Leveraging innovation as well as synergies across its diverse business portfolio, the group has solidified its position as a trailblazer of industry. With a strong foundation in place, the Aboitiz Group eagerly sets its sights on forthcoming projects that promise further success and innovation. AboitizPower. The Aboitiz Group’s holdings in power generation and distribution, AboitizPower, continues to support the country’s energy transition and socioeconomic development with its diverse portfolio of thermal and renewable energy power plants, as well as internationally certified asset management capabilities from its distribution utilities. With close to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of ongoing and disclosed energy projects, it is en route to accomplishing its 10-year growth strategy of having at least 9,200 MW in its generation portfolio equally split between RE and thermal sources of energy by the next decade. This journey includes the development of the 17 MW Tiwi Binary Geothermal Power Plant, the 94 MW Cayanga-Bugallon solar facility, and the 167 MW Laoag solar facility. AboitizPower is also looking to begin the construction of its Calatrava Solar project and Olongapo Solar project within the year. These RE investments are complemented by other developments in Battery Energy Storage Systems, like the SN Aboitiz Power 24 MW Magat Battery in Isabela, which — much like the commercially operational 49 MW Maco Battery in Davao de Oro — will help provide regulating and contingency reserve power to the country’s grids. Subsidiaries. Meanwhile, subsidiaries Davao Light and Power Company, Visayan Electric Company, Cotabato Light and Power Company and Subic EnerZone Corporation were the first power DUs in the Philippines to be certified with an ISO 55001:2014 certification for Asset Management, an international standard that attests to the efficiency of how they manage the lifecycle of their assets, i.e., power lines, transformers and substations. This validates the reliability of their services and strengthens the uninterrupted provision of electricity in their respective service areas. Efficient asset management is essential for DUs to successfully manage their infrastructure and optimize maintenance and costs, thereby ensuring regulatory compliance and a reliable bridge between transmission lines and businesses, communities and homes. UnionBank. Union Bank of the Philippines continues on its trajectory of becoming a Great Retail Bank as it has consistently been recognized as one of Asia’s leading companies. Among the many recognitions for the 1st half of 2023 that UnionBank has reaped are: Best Retail Bank in Southeast Asia (Cfi.co), 4-time Best Retail Bank in the PH (The Asian Banker) and 6-time Digital Bank of the Year PH (The Asset). In line with its nation-building “Tech-UP Pilipinas” advocacy, UnionBank’s strategic partnerships have been focused on digitization as an essential element for client success. UnionBank’s determination to be an enabler of the Philippines’ bid to be a G20 country by 2050 is apparent as it continues to nurture and grow its diverse client portfolio that includes corporate, MSME, high net worth as well as local and national government entities. As a recognized trailblazer that embraces technological innovations that empower its customers, UnionBank together with its digital banking arm UnionDigital Bank (UnionDigital), fintech arm UBX and thrift arm City Savings Bank (CitySavings) showcased its expertise in artificial intelligence at the first AI Summit PH 2023 last May. The first half of the year also saw UnionBank’s commitment to offering clients amazing and exclusive experiences through partnerships with Live Nation (for world-tour concerts) and GMG productions (for the Hamilton musical). “The investments we made last year have exceeded our expectations. UnionDigital is already profitable after less than a year in operation. There is strong momentum in the acquired credit cards business from Citi. New-to-bank card customers are at a record level. We are geared up to grow our retail banking business. Our infrastructure is ready for scale. We have sufficient capital coming from the recent stock rights offering to further grow our earning asset capital base,” said UnionBank president and CEO Edwin R. Bautista. Aboitiz InfraCapital. Aboitiz InfraCapital remains on track with its purpose of enabling businesses and uplifting communities. AIC Economic Estates maintains its position as the leader in industrial-anchored mixed-use development nationwide, with the largest footprint of developed industrial estates as well as the single largest privately owned industrial estate in Lipa-Malvar, Batangas– LIMA Estate. 2023 marked LIMA Estate’s 25th anniversary, as well as the 30th year of West Cebu Estate in Cebu. These estates are undergoing industrial and commercial expansion to accommodate more locators and create approximately 90,000 employment opportunities. Water business. For AIC’s water business units, Apo Agua can now produce safe and reliable water for the Davao City Water District’s water reservoirs. Apo Agua’s laboratory has also obtained accreditation for drinking water analysis from the Department of Health. AIC's LIMA Water, on the other hand, continues to operationally benefit from its SMART Water Network, leading to reduced fuel consumption and high facility uptime. Digital infrastructure. In the digital infrastructure landscape, Unity Digital Infrastructure completed the first closing of a total of 250 sites from its acquisition of over 1,000 telecom towers from Smart-PLDT and Globe Telecom. Additionally, Unity marked a major milestone by successfully co-locating three Mobile Network Operator tenants (Globe, Smart and DITO) in one of its towers in Cebu. The three-tenant tower is the first in the Philippines and showcases the effectiveness of the shared tower model in support of the government's drive to improve digital connectivity through the common tower initiative. Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Mactan-Cebu International Airport surpassed expectations with significant growth in passenger traffic, peaking at around 5 million passengers in the first half of this year, more than double the previous year. The resumption of major international routes, such as Shanghai and Taipei, and improved aircraft availability are expected to further boost traffic in the second half of the year. MCIA's excellence in promoting the airport and in ensuring customer experience was also recognized, as it received the Routes Asia 2023 Marketing Award in the 5 million category and became the first airport in the Philippines to be accredited by the Airports Council International for its Airport Customer Experience. POUND-FOR-POUND — Good guy Gibbons gives Filipino boxers the chance to shine
If you’re a talented fighter nursing dreams of becoming a world champion, there is one guy you need to get in touch with. If you’re a promoter who has got a bevy of promising fighters but with no strong connections to the guys who matter in the world of big-time boxing, you have to meet the fellow who makes things happen. That dude is no other than Sean Gibbons, who heads MP Promotions and a sprinkling of other influential outfits in the United States that gives boxers from all over the opportunity they deserve. Having trouble with your boxer’s stagnant world rating? Call Sean Gibbons. Can’t seem to get the big breaks? Call Sean Gibbons. Being given the run-around by a scammer, give Sean Gibbons a call. You see, Gibbons is a do-it-all boxing man who is a big daddy to just about any major Filipino fighter. He has got a deep knowledge of the fight game since he used to fight during his heyday. But before you start conjuring up images of Gibbons battling it out with boxing’s marquee names, pinch yourself first. Gibbons never achieved greatness as a boxer. He was more of a pretender than a contender, having racked up a 14-7-3 win-loss-draw record with seven knockouts before finally calling it a day in 1996. He never even fought in Las Vegas and instead showcased his wares in obscurity, hopping into one small town and city after another. After spending his first five pro bouts in Oklahoma City, Gibbons brought his act elsewhere and in places he never knew existed: Hugo, Purcell, Waubeek. A year before he retired in 1995, Gibbons, now 56, even traveled to Germany and fought and lost by knockout to local boy Ruediger May. Two more bouts on American soil — the first in Des Moines, Iowa, and the second in Miles City, Montana — paved the way for one final stop in Denmark against Peter Madsen. Gibbons would lose that by stoppage again and decided that enough was enough. Pretty soon, Gibbons got himself doing odd jobs in boxing through a relative — uncle Pat O’ Grady — father to former world lightweight champion Sean O’Grady. “I got the boxing bug from him. I would set up the ring, help sell tickets and train fighters… I started from the bottom,” Gibbons, born in Long Beach, California, said, noting that the first fighter he trained was heavyweight Wimpy Halstead. Oftentimes, Gibbons “would jump in as one of the fighters in the card and I was able to travel the world.” He also got aligned with Top Rank and credits Hall of Fame Bruce Trampler and fight coordinator Pete Susens as his mentors and takes great pride in his close association with eight-division legend Manny Pacquiao. Gibbons actually came to the Pacquiao show rather late. But his seven-year stint working for Pacquiao was the most memorable, saying it doesn’t compare with the 35 other years of involvement with boxing. “Seven years I spent with him were better than the other 35 years,” Gibbons, who graduated from Simi Valley High, said. Gibbons revealed that after Australian banger Jeff Horn elbowed and butted and wrestled his way in carving out a controversial points win in Brisbane in July 2018, “Pacquiao had pretty much been left for dead by some people.” It was right at this time when Gibbons entered the scene as Pacquiao’s go-to-guy for meaningful fights while also providing other Filipino boxers the break they need to become successful. Gibbons didn’t disappoint and was instrumental in striking a deal for fights involving Adrien Broner and Keith Thurman that resulted in a “tremendous run.” The victory over Thurman would go down as an epic as it made Pacquiao the oldest to win a world welterweight crown in July 2019 in Las Vegas. Now that Pacquiao has sailed into the sunset, Gibbons is dedicating his time and effort to the betterment of the other talents under MP Promotions, the Pacquiao-owned company that has majority of the country’s top ring talent under contract. And this is where Gibbons wields his expertise and proof of his savvy can be seen on Jerwin Ancajas, Pedro Taduran, Rene Cuarto, Mark Magsayo and current two-belt world super-bantamweight titleholder Marlon Tapales. Also under Gibbons’ care are Jonas Sultan, Vincent Astrolabio, Jade Bornea and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist and Asian Games silver medalist Eumir Marcial. Though not every one of them managed to win a world title, Gibbons draws utmost satisfaction from the helping hand that he had extended to them. “The most satisfying thing is to change lives of the fighters and take fighters who wouldn’t normally get these opportunities.” Also, Gibbons points to Pacquiao as a reason why he was able to pull it off. “I had the name Manny Pacquiao promotions and Manny Pacquiao was behind me but the biggest, biggest key was Al Haymon and he took my word for guys like Jerwin Ancajas, Mark Magsayo, Jonas Sultan and many, many others.” And there is no stopping Gibbons from doing the same thing especially when his clients’ welfare is on the line. A few months ago, Gibbons earned the ire of a state commission and got slapped with a ban. Still, Gibbons swears it is his way of showing that he always got his clients’ back. So how does he want people to remember him? “I would like to be remembered as someone who gave his all, no regrets. Just you know, when I work with someone, I put all my heart and soul into it. I got suspended for five for screaming at referees but I would like to be remembered for a guy who always had his client, fighters and boxers’ back and that when we went at it, we gave it our all.” If you end up going to war, you’d certainly want somebody like Sean Gibbons right by your side. Reliable partner through Filipinos’ financial journey For decades, Metrobank served as a reliable partner for Filipinos throughout their life journey — providing them financial services and guidance that are tailor-fit to their needs, even as they now navigate a modern and digital world. But before offering them a product or a service, every Metrobanker ensures that their clients fully and clearly understand the financial products and services they will avail of. The Bank’s mission to enable Filipinos throughout their financial journey goes beyond simply offering relevant solutions. Despite its financial success, the Bank’s priority and advocacy is to educate Filipinos first as they step into their financial journey. This is to make sure that every client makes a fully-informed financial decision and know how to protect themselves against fraud. This is made evident through Metrobank’s sustained financial education efforts — designed to equip Filipinos with reliable financial advice, fit for every life stage. In 2022, Metrobank introduced a comprehensive personal finance e-book developed to help Filipinos to become financially resilient. Meanwhile, the Bank’s Earnest app aims to simplify investing, through bite-sized lesson cards and easy-to-understand articles that cover basic investing concepts. For more advanced investors, there is Wealth Insights, an online portal that contains publicly accessible market-moving news and insights, as well as exclusive premium content that includes bespoke articles which dive deep into timely and actionable investment ideas. Meanwhile, Metrobank provides its clients with regular reminders and guidance to protect themselves against fraudulent transactions via SMS, emails, and social media posts. Today, Filipinos can easily start their financial journey by going to Metrobank’s hundreds of branches nationwide or digitally via the Earnest app. Those aiming to further grow their funds through investments can do so with Metrobank’s Online Time Deposit, which offers an interest rate of up to 4.5 percent, or through Metrobank’s wide-range of unit investment trust funds (UITF). With its commitment to give customers a safe, simple and secure experience on the NEW Metrobank app, the Bank recently introduced its interoperable QR feature, which allows on-the- go clients to enjoy more convenient fund transfers to and from other banks and e-wallets. Meanwhile, clients who are ready for a life upgrade - be it a new car or their dream home, can avail of Metrobank’s home and car loan offers with affordable rates and flexible payment terms. Growth partner for businesses Metrobank’s services transcends from customers to enterprises. When Metrobank was founded in 1962, it was primarily built to be a bank for businesses. Over six decades later, the Bank continues to stay true to its roots by offering a full suite of best-in-class financial solutions designed to serve enterprises of all sizes — from SMEs to large corporations based here and abroad. Crackdown vs text blasters up
The Department of Information and Communications Technology, or DICT, is cracking down on fraudsters who use cheap, China-made text-blasting machines to boost the electoral campaigns of their clients. DICT Undersecretary Alex Ramos said they will clamp down on the proliferation of scam and spam messages plaguing users despite the SIM Registration Act being in place. It will also be timely as the barangay and youth elections are near, he added. Ramos recalled that government authorities had previously confiscated text blast machines used to send messages en masse to multiple mobile numbers. “Those text machines were very popular during campaign periods and they are now very cheap. We [have] seized a lot of these machines,” he said. Despite having a SIM law, fraudsters are still able to find new ways to hack into phones and computers, this time using over-the-top or OTT media services such as chat apps, which are outside the scope of telco filters. The DICT official urged consumers to be more proactive and not fall for various online ruses by malevolent players capitalizing on the increasing shift by people to a digital lifestyle. Cybercriminals use the target’s full name and pretend to be messaging them about a missed connection or make various offers. They create a sense of familiarity and trust in an attempt to start a conversation. The SIM Registration Act was envisioned to address escalating cybercrime in the country, including the proliferation of smishing and other forms of scam and spam messaging. The law mandated all mobile phone and prepaid broadband users to register their SIMs by 25 July or face SIM deactivation. A deactivated SIM card can potentially affect several aspects of a person’s life. For instance, it will cut their access to online banking, e-commerce, transportation, healthcare, education, and entertainment, among other things. Pinoy’s got talent
“That’s cool, Attorney,” said Mr. Arico “Acoy” Matibay, a fictional client of mine from the Philippines. He was sitting in my office along with his long-time sweetheart, Ms. Dinah Sia Maasim, seeking legal advice about their chances of getting a green card in the US. “So, if we have special talents or skills that are way above what ordinary people have, we can apply for a green card?” interjected Ms. Maasim, who could not mask the excitement on her face. “Yes,” I replied. “But there are a number of requirements that need to be met in order to qualify for this type of visa. Number one is that exceptional talent or ability should pertain to the arts, sciences, or business. Number two is there should be an employer willing to sponsor the person.” I explained further that this type of sponsorship was relatively faster because it belonged to the EB-2 immigrant visa category with only a one-to-two-year waiting period for a green card. Also, the application could bypass the labor certification process and be filed directly with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services if accompanied with proof that the person had international acclaim or recognition in his/her field of specialty, that he/she performed or possessed the special skills within the past year, and that the exceptional ability would be put to use in the US immediately. “To prove these things,” I continued, “you can submit evidence of awards or prizes, certificates of membership in international associations, published materials about the work or talent, authorship of scientific or scholarly articles, proof of participation as a judge or panel member, etc.” “In addition,” I went on, “at least three of the following types of documentary evidence must be submitted: an academic record of diploma, award, or certificate, letters showing at least 10 years’ full-time experience in the specialty field, license or certification to practice the profession or occupation, proof of high salary commensurate with the exceptional skill, proof of membership in professional associations, or evidence of special recognition from industry peers or governmental organizations.” After I finished talking, the couple exchanged excited glances and smiled at each other, their faces beaming with satisfaction. Mr. Matibay spoke first: “Thank you for the explanation, Attorney. I think we can meet most of the requirements.” “Our special talents have made us somewhat popular in Asia,” added Ms. Maasim, smiling. “We’ve also received awards from the industry, plus we’ve been very active in performing our special skills this past year. We also intend to use our exceptional talent here in the US. In fact, there’s an employer/producer who’s very much willing to put us to work as soon as possible.” “Not only that,” continued Mr. Matibay, “we’re also members of a professional film group that sometimes act as panel judges for amateur movie contests. We’ve been doing this gig for 15 years now and we’re among the top five percent of high-earners.” “That’s quite impressive,” I said. “May I ask what is it that you guys both do?” “We’re acrobatic porn artists, Attorney,” replied Mr. Matibay proudly. “We do triple-X movies and live shows. Our most popular segments are the Torture Chamber and Banana Split. We also do Jose and the Pussycats. Last year, we did a Covid special called Strep Throat. We actually have a demo tape with us, Attorney. It’s called The Magic of Johnson and Larry’s Bird.” My head started spinning and it took me a while to find the courage to tell them that the US did not consider porn acrobatic talent as a skill of exceptional caliber for EB-2 sponsorship purposes. Sexceptional ability maybe, but exceptional ability certainly wasn’t. I advised them to try their luck in Russia instead. The post Pinoy’s got talent appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

RCBC’s card use drives P6-B H1 profit
Universal lender Rizal Commercial Banking Corp., or RCBC, recorded a net income of P6.2 billion in the first half, mostly due to increased credit card transactions. Gross income jumped by 10 percent to P23.5 billion in the first half from the same period last year, with income from credit card transactions surging by 48 percent, the bank reported to the Philippine Stock Exchange said. Bill collections grew 54 percent which RCBC attributed to “personalized and data-driven campaigns.” Loans increased by 14 percent as the bank said consumer and corporate lending “sustained their momentum toward an 18 percent growth.” Meanwhile, total deposits increased by 22 percent, reflecting the 17 percent growth in low-cost current and savings accounts. RCBC attributed the higher savings to its growing number of depositors in “retail and small and medium enterprises outside Metro Manila.” Basic banking via app Through its improved mobile app RCBC Pulz, the bank said clients can avail of its basic banking services and investing products in a more convenient process. “RCBC continues to perform better than the industry as we focus on high-growth segments and equip our people with digital and data science tools,” RCBC president Eugene Acevedo said. Total assets expanded by 17 percent to P1.2 trillion, resulting in a better-annualized return on assets ratio of 1.11 percent. Meanwhile, annualized return on equity improved to 11.1 percent. RCBC said it expects capital ratios to improve by over 300 basis points through the completion of the P27-billion capital infusion from Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. Ejercito’s son fell victim to SMS scammers
The son of Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito became one of the latest victims of scammers who prey on their innocent victims through mobile text messaging or SMS. In a virtual interview, Ejercito narrated how his son, Emilio, was scammed by an unidentified phone caller despite the imposition of the mandatory SIM card registration law last month. “It happened, I think, around last month only. We already reported it to the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) Cybercrime Division,” he told reporters on Friday. “What is worrisome here is it looks like an inside job,” he added. He noted that his son received several calls asking for his information after he received a credit card from his bank. “What puzzles us is that they knew his information; hence, I said it is an inside job. They know his background and everything about him,” he said. “So maybe, the kid, being naïve, thought it was legitimate because they knew his information his address, birthday, parents, and school. He gave the OTP,” he added. The OTP or one-time password is one of the most common authentication methods utilized by banks which they send to their clients through text messages. “To cut a long story short, the savings which I’ve been giving him for several years were cleaned up,” Ejercito said. “This kid is very frugal, he doesn’t spend a lot. Every time I gave him money during Christmas or birthdays, he really saved it up,” he added. The lawmaker said that the amount scammers took from his son ranged from P100,000 to P120,000. “That is why I am really saddened by this because he really saved it through the years,” he said. Due to the incident, Ejercito said he would support the inclusion of P300 million worth of confidential and intelligence funds in the 2024 proposed budget for the Department of Information and Communications Technology. “That is why if the DICT would really use it for anti-fraud or cyber [security] then I would support it,” he said. In a statement, Budget Assistant Secretary Mary Anne de la Vega said the additional P300 million in DICT’s CIF will cover the agency’s cyber security programs. Sumitomo pours P27B into RCBC
Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation, or RCBC, successfully sealed the deal for a fresh capital of P27 billion through its sale of 15 percent stake to Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, or SMBC. In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Monday, RCBC said the capital infusion will “reinforce the bank’s growth trajectory particularly in core businesses, corporate, small and medium enterprises and retail segments.” RCBC President Eugene Acevedo said it will open opportunities for “adopting global best practices, and customer-centric strategies, promoting disruptive banking solutions, and expediting our digital transformation.” RCBC said the parties will now proceed to accomplish post sale requirements and activities. Presence in 40 countries Founded in 2003, Japan’s SMBC serves clients in 40 countries and was the twelfth largest bank in the world in 2019, according to Bloomberg. It offers cash management, treasury management, corporate lending, structured financing, asset backed financing, export credit agency financing and loans to individuals and enterprises. On the other hand, RCBC is the fifth largest bank in the Philippines in terms of assets. In the first quarter this year, the bank’s total resources rose by 20 percent to P1.2 trillion, boosted by 46-percent growth in credit card receivables and 67-percent growth in credit card billings. RCBC grew its net income to P3.6 billion during the first three months, up by 70 percent compared to the year-ago level. Credit card issuances also ballooned by 44 percent, which the bank managers attributed mostly to data analytics. “We are reinforcing our sales network to enable wider and efficient coverage, guided by data science and analytics to further understand customer needs and serve them better,” Acevedo said. RCBC serves clients at its 462 branches nationwide and through its mobile app DiskarTech caters to the mass market, offering savings, fund transfer, insurance and microfinance to individuals and small and medium enterprises.
