SMC power unit investors warned
“Thread cautiously” on San Miguel Power Global Holdings Corp., or SMPGH, an international think tank advised investors after assessing the prospects of the energy unit of the Asian conglomerate. The Detroit-based Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, or IEEFA, issued the call for caution due to SMPGH’s piling debts in contrast to its earnings. In a review of the dominant power producer, IEEFA said the company’s elevated net debt-to-earnings and potential difficulties meeting financial obligations “create additional risk of devaluation, particularly in the long term.” Likewise, SMPGH investors were cautioned about its mounting challenges in securing favorable funding terms due to its high fossil fuel exposure and high non-call risk for its sizable US dollar-denominated perpetual securities. IEEFA said the backing of parent San Miguel Corporation, one of the most diversified Asian multinationals, offers only “some comfort.” It said SMC’s own elevated debt and “business uncertainties will be critical to monitor” when assessing financial risks to SMGPH. Thus, due to its ongoing fossil fuel expansion, the company needs more strategic options to address financial risks in the near to medium term. However, IEEFA expressed the belief that an immediate material pivot toward low-cost domestic renewable energy represents the best hedge against exposure to imported fossil fuels, prices of which remain on an upswing. A compilation of the financial performance of the SMC units last year showed that only SMGPH tallied a huge loss. By the numbers Food unit San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc. reported a P34.6 billion or 10 percent gain; beer unit San Miguel Brewery Inc., a P31.75 billion profit, up eight percent; SMC Infrastructure a P14.24 billion net income, 110 percent higher; San Miguel Foods, P9.218-billion profit, up nine percent; Petron Corp., P6.697-billion, a nine percent increase; Ginebra San Miguel, P4.547 profit, a nine percent growth; San Miguel Packaging Group, 42 percent growth at P1.648-billion, and SMGPH, P3.134 billion or an 80 percent loss. SMGPH controls 4,719 megawatts or MW of operational power capacity, making it the largest power generation company in the Philippines by installed capacity. As of April 2022, the company owned 21 percent of installed capacity nationally and 28 percent of the Luzon grid, the largest of the three Philippine grids. However, SMC announced a 2050 net-zero target at its annual general meeting in June 2023. IEEFA said, “implementation details are sparse.” SMGPH’s existing generation portfolio is dominated by fossil fuel power plants, which comprise 87 percent of its operational capacity. Hydropower accounts for 12 percent. As of August 2023, the company does not have equity interests in wind or solar assets, IEEFA pointed out. “Without a change in strategy away from dependence on volatile fossil fuels, the company may increasingly find itself locked into financial instability,” according to IEEFA’s study. Fitch Ratings research unit CreditSights issued a similar report last year, saying the rising interest and debt payments of SMGPH may affect the company’s key projects. “Given the worsening financial profile of SMC Global Power, any concerns over its hypothetical default raise fears of triggering a cross-default on SMC,” the report said. The highly leveraged operation of the Asian conglomerate was also a concern raised by Bloomberg Intelligence, which indicated that it may impair the parent’s ability to rescue its subsidiaries in a financial fix. The Advantage of Adopting the Right Digital Tools for your Business
Amid the uncertainty in customer behaviors and trends from the crisis, this much is clear: updating the business for a digital-first world, led by purpose, is now a must for almost every company. To do so, they must determine where new business value exists in the new normal, what digital business models will capture it, and which tools and behaviors will support the adaptability and resilience that these models require. On this section, we talked to the creators behind the award-winning platform made for businesses like yours. The Digital Advantage Companies need an understanding of 3rd Platform technologies to capitalize on improved decision-making and to deliver enhanced, customized experiences to stakeholders. The rapid acceleration of 3rd Platform technology adoption means that corporates need to actively be looking for ways to improve their operational efficiency and customer service, otherwise, they will be in danger of falling too far behind digitally-native competitors to ever catch up. Efficiency Past recessions show that controlling costs by improving operational efficiency—a task for which digital solutions are perfectly suited for—is more effective in sustaining businesses through financial turbulence than traditional cost-cutting measures alone. The biggest efficiency play is automation. Streamlining operations and automating manual processes result in greater speed, less waste and more focus on revenue-generating activities. The economics of automation is simple: the same work is performed faster and with fewer mistakes, while human capital resources can be redeployed to higher-value tasks or to fill critical gaps. Convenience Company bank accounts are available in any device, the only things you need are internet connection and a few taps on the screen. This brings about an increase in customer satisfaction as they are able to constantly keep track of their account balances and manage the information on their personal profile (i.e. add new mailing address, e-mails, telephone numbers, etc.). In addition to this, there is no need to go to the bank to get checks as they can be instantly sent via email. 24/7 Reliability Online banking services are available 24/7 all year round, even on weekends. There is no need to line up and wait for the bank to open in order to conduct certain operations. This is a huge advantage that comes with digital solutions Security With all the recent news about data breaches, you might be wondering about the security of mobile and online banking. Security is top priority for banks when choosing whether or not to offer online banking. All banks use “Pentagon-grade” encryption technology and sophisticated firewalls. Mandatory security upgrades are required by bank regulators, so you can be confident that keeping your information secure is one of your bank’s utmost priorities. As digital transactions increase and productivity grow, companies must take proactive steps to protect their data privacy and security and adopt models that give them governance over their data. Today’s Platform Driven Solutions Self-service account management, bills payment and electronic fund transfers are considered the basic banking functions that each business should have. Account management allows viewing of account balances and transaction history without going to the bank. All these were made easy and accessible, by just logging into UnionBank’s The Portal app. Bills Payment, on the other hand, gives businesses access to a large list of billers. They can pay their water, electricity, telco, and other utilities online. BIR ePayment is also available, allowing users to pay taxes online. If the company is an accounting firm, they can also pay for their client’s taxes on The Portal app. Electronic fund transfers save companies time and reduce their risk exposure. Just upload the batch crediting file on the platform and it automatically disburses it to their recipients. Clients can also set up their recipients in UnionBank Business Banking so they receive email and SMS notifications every time they are credited. All these are made possible without stepping inside a branch. Batch Electronic Funds Transfer is also now made available for UnionBank Transfers and PESONet. This enables the streamlining of bulk account to account transfers to another UnionBank account or to other bank accounts. This has highlighted the ease and convenience of going digital to corporate clients versus processing transactions through the traditional way of banking over-the-counter or paying via cheques. Going beyond the basic functions of a normal digital banking tool, The Portal’s self-enrollment feature allows businesses to conveniently self-enroll their nominated accounts and users through the simple enrollment steps. Once completed, access to The Portal is granted and clients may enjoy the convenience of processing their funds transfer instructions online. In addition, there is an option to initiate the enrollment of the beneficiary accounts individually or in bulk. This can be essential for clients that need a payee maintenance feature to ensure that the initiated transactions are only credited to enrolled account. With the convenient, hassle-free and straight-through processing in The Portal, businesses can easily push fund transfers in the comfort of their own homes or offices. This pandemic serves as a widespread test case for the effectiveness of these digital solutions, many of which will be permanent fixtures and lead to long-term changes for many businesses. Organizations that embrace digital solutions have greater resiliency in the face of adversity and are way ahead of the competition, which will enable them to recover faster and pivot from playing defense to chasing growth. While many believe it is too idealistic to have a good workplace culture and excellent compensation, many jobseekers significantly consider these two factors when applying for a job, according to two studies. The 2021 Employee Experience Survey by Willis Towers Watson reported that 89 percent of respondents believe a positive employee experience is a crucial driver of engagement, while a 2023 survey from the online recruitment platform JobStreet found that 53 percent of Filipino job seekers would like to know the salary range offered while still in the recruitment process. Aside from great benefits and compensation, employees in the IT industry pointed out that a good work culture and environment, as well as training programs, are the top priorities of job seekers. Vanessa Liwanag, business development director at Yondu, acknowledged the company’s role in her growth, “Yondu has helped me develop my leadership, decision-making, and communication skills through its effective leadership training programs. The company also helped me grow personally because of its hybrid setup. This allows me to have a work-life balance. I can still care for my family and health while contributing to the organization.” Leather, who specializes in securing networks from vulnerabilities, noted that training programs are essential as trends continuously evolve. IT professionals need to keep up in order to be efficient. Steph, a software solutions engineer, echoed this, adding that since the industry is highly competitive and fast-paced, getting equipped with the right skills and knowledge is essential. Grace, a malware researcher, said that one advantage in the IT field is that since it’s a broad industry, there is always much to learn and room for improvement. Yondu, an IT solutions company wholly owned by Globe, offers all these benefits and compensation, a good working environment, and training programs to Yondudes, a nickname for its employees. Competitive pay and benefits are OK for Yondu as the company ensures this through regularly benchmarking market data and best practices. There are also tailor-fitted rewards programs according to talent segments. Yondu also ensures its employees remain competitive and well-equipped by industry standards through various training, reskilling, and upskilling programs to hone their skills in the constantly changing tech industry. Despite the fast-paced sector continuously evolving, Yondu still values work-life balance and provides programs to support Yondudes’ well-being further. “What sets Yondu apart from other organizations is its genuine focus on understanding and supporting its employees,” said Javen Babac, lead application support specialist at Yondu. “The company recognizes that employees perform their best when they feel valued and supported, and this philosophy sets Yondu apart by fostering a positive and inclusive work environment. The organization’s commitment to understanding its employees and providing the necessary resources demonstrates its dedication to employee well-being and sets a strong foundation for professional growth and job satisfaction.” The post The Advantage of Adopting the Right Digital Tools for your Business appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Painting life with data for a better tomorrow
We live in the age of data where life is very much influenced by information. Our society is powered and inspired by data sets that propel economies, explore possibilities and change lives. And all of this happens both onscreen and off-screen. Data is king, and it brings new and contemporary delights and advancements with it. Most significant of its gifts is helping bridge the knowledge of ages ago to enrich our modern lives. Literally painting life powered by data with the brushstrokes of masters past. [caption id="attachment_179677" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] ‘The Wisdom of Da Vinci: An Immersive AI Experience’ exhibit at One Bonifacio High Street. | photographs courtesy of eastwest[/caption] Art by the numbers “The Wisdom of Da Vinci: An Immersive AI Experience” is one such gift brought to life by information. The immersive art experience merges the power of data processing and the masterworks of Leonardo Da Vinci and other iconic artists into an audio-visual display. The result is an enthralling and singular experience, where the attendees become canvasses themselves as they step into the projections of data-painted art. The exhibit can be visited at One Bonifacio High Street until October. This convergence of hard data and art is what drew the attention of EastWest Ageas. The exhibit’s imagery was sourced from paintings, books, traditional CSV files and even statistics to create art that evokes the deepest of emotions and imagination. Heart and data “We decided to sponsor this exhibition because our business is about data and emotions,” shares Sjoerd Smeets, president and chief executive officer of EastWest Ageas. The business of ensuring the people’s future and assets has a bedrock built on data and information. This makes sure that all the decisions regarding the customers are founded on fact and rational thinking. “But in the end, we are here to serve our customers at difficult moments,” Sjoerd says. “Our business has a clear purpose: protect families during their most vulnerable moments and bring them comfort and security.” And this requires emotional intelligence, a feat that no data set can muster. EastWest Ageas believes that it is the union of the human capacity to empathize and the clear sightedness of data that can elevate the industry into the next level of service. Joub Miradora, EastWest Ageas’ chief customer officer succinctly summarizes this: “For true service, we want to provide a customer-centric service that gives clear solutions fueled by data and delivered with a human heart.” Data-powered and people-focused Much like how the curators behind the “Wisdom of Da Vinci” selected the AI art pieces for the exhibit, EastWest Ageas believes in the power of data to become more people focused. By leveraging data, EastWest Ageas aims to paint the lives of their customers and more Filipinos with a suite of solutions tailored for their unique needs. At the forefront of this is their customer experience strategy. “As we know that only around three percent of the Filipino population has life insurance,” Sjoerd shares. “There is still a long way to go.” With its data-powered customer experience strategy, EastWest Ageas hopes to change that number and help more Filipinos paint their tomorrows better for them and their loved ones. Lawyer places Marawi bet via Café Sindaw
As Marawi City rose from the Islamic State-led 2017 siege and the pandemic, lawyer Rohairah “Kookai” Lao saw the period as an opportunity to present fresh ideas that were missing in the capital of Lanao del Sur. With a successful career as Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao ’s regional prosecutor, she wanted to help stimulate the local economy by putting up a business. “I am at a point where I want to give back to my community. To do this, I need something which promotes tourism and is likewise an inspiration,” Lao said. An inveterate traveler, Lao thought of bringing the café culture into the laidback city. She saw potential along the scenic strip that led to Mindanao State University and Lake Lanao, the province’s prime tourism destination. Named Heaven Road, it opens to views of the forest-covered countryside and is blessed with a temperate climate. Bucking the urban legend that the place was a dumping ground for bodies after a rido or a skirmish, the entrepreneur took the risk. She pioneered in building Heaven Road’s first commercial establishment. Lao recalls that her savings were insufficient to finance the construction of the café. Fortunately, she gained access to lending companies. Her brother-in-law, who owned a hardware and construction company, provided the materials at cost. Café hands-on Although she worked with an architect, Lao was hands-on in the design which comprises two levels and a viewing deck. “I made sure that when the café was completed, people who know me can see my personal touch,” she says. Named Café Sindaw (meaning “hope” in Maranaw), the restaurant-cafe aspires to lighten up the lives of the people of Lanao del Sur. “It aims to encourage them to stand up after the fall. There is always some prospect for people who have faith,” says Lao. She invested in an Italian-made coffee machine that is operated by baristas who were trained by experts from Mindanao’s major cities — Davao and Cagayan de Oro. The head barista worked extensively in Saudi Arabia. The menu is an eclectic mix of coffee beverages, pizzas, beef rendang, sasati (spicy balls of smoked fish) and ramen, among others. During Ramadan, one of the private rooms is converted into a prayer room. It accepts orders for iftar-sponsored meals for a minimum of 30. Market turns discriminating Lao observes that the local market is becoming more discriminating as diners appreciate cosmopolitan cuisine and special brewed blends. The resto-café is frequently booked for meetings and birthday parties. The customers gained during the early days of Heaven Road have remained loyal to Café Sindaw despite the mushrooming of similar restaurant cafes. When Café Sindaw opened in February 2022, there was hardly any competition. Following Lao’s example, entrepreneurs have since built their own cafes along Heaven Road. It is now a tourist destination because of the comfort food and beverages and panoramic vistas. Lao observes that people tend to go into business when the economy starts to thrive. As in most ventures, there are challenges, “Opening a restaurant or café is not easy. It involves compliance to national and local regulations. These can sometimes be a burden such as payments of several fees and taxes to the business sector,” Lao said. Then there’s learning to increase operational competence, create a top-performing menu, train and retain staffers. Shanghai billionaire
Author’s Note. This story is inspired by true events in Manila, Philippines in the early 1950s. Mawan is a rags-to-riches guy, like a few other famous Filipino Taipans. He stowed away on a cargo ship in Shanghai bound for Manila. Upon reaching Manila, he jumped ship in the dark of night and found his freedom from great poverty to less poverty. He slept in front of a bank on Plaza Cervantes until the police shooed him away. He was forced to sleep under a nearby footbridge along the bank of the Pasig River. For six months, he survived by trading in junk, old newspapers, and empty bottles (dyaryo-bote). He was a “no-English-no-read-no-write” kid. Maning, the bank manager, who often saw Mawan loitering outside the bank and was getting annoyed, asked him in Pilipino where he was from. Mawan answered in Cantonese. It was the beginning of an instant friendship as the manager was once a Shanghai boy himself. Mawan blurted out his story of adventure. Maning adopted Mawan as his own son and gave him a job as a janitor at the bank. He slept in the garage of the manager’s Chinatown home. To cut the story short, in 10 years, Mawan graduated from janitor to clerk to supervisor at the bank. He later resigned, and in another 10 years, graduated from junk shop owner to stockbroker. He became a billionaire at the age of 33. At that time, China bought most of the global supply of coal, which was fuel for cement plants, inducing a nationwide coal shortage. Cement stocks fell to their lowest point and that was when Mawan used all his savings to purchase stocks of the largest cement plant in the country. He ignored Maning’s warnings that it was a dangerous move. When the shortage was over and coal was once again available for cement production, Mawan’s stocks soared to the stratosphere and, at their peak, he unloaded at 55 times their purchase price. He, in fact, caused the stock to take a deep dive as many investors followed his move. He married the daughter of a Chinese billionaire and had a daughter, Melissa. Mawan spoiled her, but he knew that she would not be able to survive in a cruel world with a silver spoon in her mouth. So, he yanked her out of her comfort zone and immersed her in mud, sending her to live with the laborers he had contracted to build a huge mall in Cebu City. MELISSA: Papa, thank you for letting me help your workers. I’m so bored reading books, I’m going crazy. MAWAN: Can you manage to live in a small beach shack with no maid and no car? MELISSA: I am so happy helping the workers, I can take any kind of discomfort. But I got a worker’s daughter as my maid. I’m on top of the world, Papa. Melissa grew in the spirit in her whole new world. From her pocket money, she gave small loans to the beleaguered workers and paid their hospital bills when they got sick. MAWAN: Be careful, Melissa. The workers may not pay you back. MELISSA: I don’t have a problem. They know that if they don’t pay me back, they will lose their jobs. I hired a micro-lending consultant to teach them how to save money to pay off their loans. So far, I have zero bad debts from loans of half a million pesos, Papa. Mawan was so happy that his daughter had turned out so well after he had dipped her in the mud. Then, suddenly, he developed cancer of the prostate, stage 1. He had it cured immediately, but the doctor warned that he needed to rest to strengthen his immune system. MAWAN: Melissa, I want you to drop everything and take over. I need to rest. MELISSA: Go on a world tour, you and Mama. Take a slow tour of the Yangtze River for a month. Visit the ancient Buddhist temples outside Shanghai. I will take care of business. The hardship she experienced in Cebu strengthened Melissa’s spirit. She was ready to be the youngest CEO in Chinatown. MAWAN: (Upon returning home after two months in China.) Our immersion in China was the greatest gift you gave us, Melissa. It opened my eyes. We met so many people who made us happy. Now I know. The world is not just about building corporate empires but also spiritual empires. MELISSA: My world with the workers was your greatest gift to me. Your wisdom opened my heart. It was a great exchange gift. Somehow, happiness healed Mawan’s cancer. He adopted Melissa’s style, immersing himself in the workers as the key to his healing. eastwindreplyctr@gmail.com The post Shanghai billionaire appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Maker & Made resto draws brunch crowd
As businesses are thriving again following the coronavirus plague for three long years, people as usual are coming in droves to shopping and dining establishments in the busy commercial centers of the metropolis. [caption id="attachment_171844" align="aligncenter" width="822"] Bread baked fresh daily.[/caption] [gallery size="full" ids="171842,171846,171845"] We can see customers like honeybees enjoying various food delicacies in restaurants and sipping hot or cold coffee at cafes. Maker and Made, located at the Milestone Bldg. in Bonifacio Global City, is one such coffee shop that draws folks to its menu offerings. People from various nationalities and economic status, though the place is the habitat of the powerful, famous and rich, are fond of coming to the establishment to enjoy its coffee and other food delicacies. The coffee shop is manned by 30 ex-overseas Filipino workers who worked for over 20 years in a famous coffee shop in Singapore. Though gainfully employed there, they left, only to join with this company as all of them are Filipinos except the owners. John Paul Galang, executive sous chef and sous chef in Singapore for so many decades, said the place opened on 24 May. It is owned by Communal Artisan Group whose business acumen primarily is focused in foods and beverages. Galang averred that the resto’s specialty is coffee from a local source, artisan baking and other delicious food delicacies with an Aussie style known as brunch, but it is rooted of Filipino sensibilities. The coffee shop opens at 7 a.m. and takes it last order at 5 p.m. Rue Ribon, executive chef and certified executive officer, said the owners of this coffee shop have the heart to help and bless our Filipino small farmers as coffee beans and other products are locally produced. They also work with coffee growers from Mindanao. The cafe can accommodate close to 60 people as it has communal tables, bar seats and al fresco seats and tables along with a high-tech comfort room and washing area. Food and coffee are served in locally produced ceramic earthenware. Many components in their dishes and baked threats are all made fresh in-house, and should their customers take the goodies home, their packaging is biodegradable with less impact on the environment. Next time you pass by or have a scheduled food trip at BGC, why not give it a try at Maker and Made? The post Maker & Made resto draws brunch crowd appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Coffee venture expands wings
Homegrown coffee producer Allegro Beverage Corporation, or ABC, will soon bring its brands to Palawan and Legazpi City in Albay to provide more of its imported, industry-preferred espresso machines, brewers, coffee beans, syrups, sauces, and teas. On Monday, ABC unveiled its new Mandaluyong headquarters while announcing its collaboration with UCC Japan, which owns a 65 percent share of UCC Philippines. In 2018, ABC entered a strategic alliance with UCC Japan, the 5th largest coffee company in the world, which now owns majority ABC stake. ABC chief executive officer Yasmin Vasquez said synergy with UCC sets them apart from competitors. “ABC is the only coffee distributor in the Philippines that is backed by a global brand. It is looking into expansion in terms of the types of products we carry, so we are covering it right now with traditional and fully automatic espresso machines. We have premium brewed coffee from Italy, freshly roasted by UCC for us,” she said. Vasquez said they are now selling espresso machines to those who want to have freshly brewed coffee in the comfort of their home, apart from the machines supplied to hotels and coffee shops. “We will try to bring in more home-use equipment and other products that we think meet our goal of being a holistic coffee provider in the country,” she stated. Vasquez said their products are not only seen in restaurants, coffee shops, and hotels in Metro Manila but also in provinces, including Cebu, Davao and Pampanga, while their dealers have branched out in Iloilo, Bohol, Quezon, Laguna, Cavite and in Pangasinan. Synergy with UCC UCC is an integrated family-owned coffee business from plantations, roasting facilities, and product distribution to equipment maintenance services. “UCC Japan is involved in coffee equipment manufacturing in Japan, called Lucky Coffee Machine, as well as involved in coffee manufacturing, coffee shops, and education as it has its own Coffee Academy. On the other hand, UCC Philippines is into manufacturing and creating business-to-business programs and has another company that handles the coffee shops and another company that owns an academy. UCC Philippines is basically duplicating what UCC Japan has been doing,” UCC Philippines president and chief executive officer Hubert Young said. Young said UCC has been “very picky” with franchisees and does not just entertain those franchisees that have a lot of money to spend but do not have a passion for coffee. “Because at the end of the day, it’s the branding of the UCC that I am making sure maintained,” Young maintained. He said owning a franchise costs P16 million for a 150 square meters stand-alone coffee shop, with a break-even return of investments of five years maximum. Quezon City urges establishments to have gender-inclusive CRs
A recent advisory from the Quezon City Business Permits and Licensing Department (QC-BPLD) encouraged all business establishments to designate all-gender toilet rooms and lavatories. The notice cited a provision of City Ordinance No. SP-2357, S-2014, otherwise known as the Quezon City Gender-Fair Ordinance, which states, “All government agencies, private offices, and commercial/ industrial establishments shall designate toilet rooms and lavatories for the equal and shared use of individuals of all genders.” Ma. Margarita T. Santos, Ph. D., head of the QC-BPLD, reiterated the city’s stance on equal rights, and its firm commitment to ensure the protection of those rights, regardless of gender identity. “As a city, we are always actively working towards true gender equality – protecting the rights of the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, etc) community and abolishing all forms of discrimination," she expounded. “Mandating gender-inclusive comfort rooms in government offices, and encouraging business establishments to do the same, is a small but significant step towards that goal.” With this, QC is looking to build or designate a third all-gender CR in all government and public spaces. The gender-inclusive comfort rooms can be used by individuals who do not strictly identify as cisgender males or females, and thus create a safer and more comfortable environment for them. Santos also reiterated the support of other QC departments for this gender-inclusive policy of QC Mayor Joy Belmonte, who is considered by many in the LGBTQIA+ community to be a champion and a staunch ally. “I think I speak on behalf of the other local government departments and Mayor Joy when I say that the City’s support for the queer community will never waver. We will take steps big and small to ensure that everyone, regardless of gender, will have equal rights and accessibility,” she concluded. Cool, Chic and Comfortable Fashion
By Jocelyn Valle and Ann Jenireene Gomez Ralph Lauren is easily one of the most mispronounced designer labels around. For the record, this American icon of fashion is pronounced this way: “Ralf LO-ren,” according to Martin Elmer Santos, the manager of Ralph Lauren’s Polo brand boutique at Greenbelt 5. That’s right, not the French-sounding “Ralf Lo-Rahn.” [caption id="attachment_160185" align="aligncenter" width="853"] AUBREY Miles and Troy Montero.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_160186" align="aligncenter" width="1703"] Kieza Garra and Jeanette Ong.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_160188" align="aligncenter" width="1280"] (FROM left) SSI Group Inc. president Anton Huang, Maricel and Donny Pangilinan, Nikki Huang, Ella and Anthony Pangilinan.PHOTOGRAPHS courtesy of Polo Ralph Lauren[/caption] Santos spoke to Daily Tribune at the store’s recent opening. “We have the different collections here,” he said. Aside from its signature Polo Shirt, which has been around since 1972, Polo Ralph Lauren Men’s line presents several collections to check out in Spring/Summer 2023. There’s the timeless collection called Heritage Icons, as inspired by The Hamptons’ preppy fashion. Another one, The Curator, is a refined sportswear merged with Manhattan’s Gallery tastemakers’ sophisticated gallery look. The Summit collection reinvigorates the Active line with archival styles and technical performance, while the Key West line displays a relaxed island lifestyle. Lastly, a diverse collection of vibrant seasonal fashion is showcased in the South America range. It suits perfectly in warm weather and blends well with exotic adventure vibes. Polo Ralph Lauren Women’s line, on the other hand, has a Spring/Summer 2023 collection that covers Mediterranean, California Modern and Laurel Canyon themes of undeniably timeless and classic style. Likewise not to be missed is the Polo ID collection, which showcases handbags, footwear and other leather goods that embody elegance and comfort. Star-studded affair The opening of the Greenbelt branch (the first at Shangri-La mall and soon at Rustan’s Makati and Solaire), was attended by some of the notable celebrities in the fields of fashion, beauty pageants and show business. They looked cool, chic and comfortable in Polo Ralph Lauren fashion pieces. Actor Maricel Laxa turned up with her husband Anthony Pangilinan, a media practitioner and management consultant, along with their daughter Ella Pangilinan and, later on, with their son, matinee idol Donny Pangilinan. “I want something comfortable and easy to carry. I don’t want anything elaborate. I’m a little bit stylish now because I have kids who are more exposed to fashion.” Aubrey Miles, also an actress and entrepreneur, came at the event with her husband and fellow celebrity Troy Montero. She had this to say on dressing up: “As long as it looks good on me and it flatters my body, I go for that. I’m more stylish when I go out alone. When I’m with Troy, I’m more on the sexy side. With our kids, just a long dress with pockets or with a sling bag.” For his part, Montero said, “I just always want to be comfortable. I think my fashion sense changed over the years. I’m definitely more into comfort than anything else. Once you feel good and comfortable, you can be confident walking around. Nothing makes you more uncomfortable and less confident if it’s not fitted. I like to keep up with the trends and things like that. Like today, I’m wearing this Polo shirt, and I kinda went for the one with a little bit non-traditional.” More actors talked to us about their fashion sense. Max Collins described her fashion sense as “laidback chic.” She explained, “I always wear something that I can move in, but at the same time it’s classic and simple. I love neutral colors as well.” Sofia Andres said she goes for “classic, simple and chic at the same time,” even when she's with her three-year-old daughter. “I only wear pants, shirts, sometimes a coat, blazer, that’s it. That looks amazing.” Young star Kyline Alcantara admitted letting her moods dictate her fashion choices. “Sometimes I’m into street style. Sometimes I’m into classy, simple. It really depends on my mood. I feel that’s what fashion is. It’s art also, how you describe yourself, what makes you feel confident.” Celeste Cortesi, who was crowned Miss Universe Philippines in 2022, declared, “I like wearing anything, depends on where I go. I just want to be comfortable and chic at the same time.” Fashion model-turned-actress and host Phoemela Baranda noted that having a baby (her second in 20 years) has changed her body type and she works around that. “I try to look whatever suits my body type now and I’m comfortable with. So, I’m comfortable with long dresses. But of course a little updated naman. I update with accessories or a body.” Myrza Sison, former top model and now a speaker, host, journalist and certified executive coach had this to say about her fashion sense: “Minimal effort for maximum impact. “So I believe in style, rather than fashion, and I think the more you know yourself, the more you can have personal style. Otherwise, you’re just gonna try every trend and you won’t really present a strong image to the world.” The post Cool, Chic and Comfortable Fashion appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
House vs. condo: Which is a better investment?
Buying your own home is a decision that undoubtedly ranks among the most critical choices an individual can make. Discovering the ideal space for your safety, comfort and personal preferences is paramount when considering property investment. It must be a place where you can find solace, freedom and a breath of fresh air away from the chaos of daily life. But the question that looms large for many is whether to invest in a house or a condo unit. The certainty of buying a property during a recuperating economy is a valid concern. However, according to Collier International’s latest report, both the local office and residential property sectors are expected to recover from the disruptions of the past year. The gradual reopening of the economy will support the demand in the residential sector, including pre-selling and secondary markets. Cost efficiency is subjective when it comes to owning a property. Condominiums are typically less expensive than houses due to their size, and their maintenance is usually cheaper as you are only responsible for the interior of your unit. With association fees in place, you won’t have to worry about exterior maintenance or administrative assistance. Condos have a dedicated Property Management Team consisting of professionals who are specifically trained to oversee the day-to-day operations of the property. While houses provide homeowners the freedom to customize a larger space and transform it into your ideal home, you will be responsible for all maintenance and repairs. Regardless of whether you choose a house or a condo, it is essential to have a realistic budget in mind before beginning your property search. Functional facilities Condominiums offer a plethora of state-of-the-art functional facilities such as swimming pools, fitness gyms, kids’ play areas, game rooms and lounges. Communal areas provide condo owners with an abundance of ways to relax and unwind without having to travel too far from their residences. These communal spaces also foster interaction among residents, enabling them to forge connections and establish a sense of community. On the other hand, houses may not offer as many amenities to homeowners. Depending on the type of lifestyle you want, the amenities incorporated into the spaces play a crucial role in enhancing your quality of life. Security is a top consideration when looking for a place of your own. As condos have shared spaces such as lobbies, hallways, parking and amenity areas, they often have dedicated security personnel and 24/7 surveillance systems in place. In contrast, houses have individual entrances and private spaces, which may require homeowners to implement their own security measures. Moreover, condos often have controlled access points, such as key card systems and intercoms. These help regulate who can enter the building and add an extra layer of security. Houses, on the other hand, rely on individual means of access control, such as locks, alarms, and security systems installed by homeowners. Convenience-wise, condominiums are usually strategically located in prominent business districts and mixed-use communities, offering unparalleled convenience to their owners. These prime locations give residents effortless access to a myriad of lifestyles and commercial establishments. From trendy retail outlets, cozy cafes and vibrant entertainment venues, condominium dwellers find themselves amidst a thriving urban ecosystem. MidPark Towers, located in the heart of Aseana City, is the epitome of sophisticated city living. With its world-class amenities and convenient access to transportation linkages, lifestyle centers, businesses and services, it offers a luxurious retreat from bustling city life. The property is also just a 10-minute drive from Ninoy Aquino International Airport via NAIAx and is near the Entertainment City, home to Solaire Resort and Okada Manila. Developed by Aseana Residential Holdings Corp., MidPark Towers is a four-tower residential property set for completion in the last quarter of 2023. The predominantly glass façade of the four towers exudes an elegant and sophisticated ambiance. The units are spacious and livable, ranging from studios (40 sqm +/-) to three bedrooms (120 sqm +/-), offering endless possibilities for creating a perfect home. MidPark Towers also provides a host of amenities to support growing families and inspire the imagination and creativity of children. From kid’s play areas to outdoor pools, fitness gym and private and business lounges, it offers a truly rewarding experience of luxury and comfort. The rise of biophilic concept
As a leader of a multi-brand building materials and housing company, Satoshi Konagai’s vision of an ideal home combines functionality, comfort, aesthetics and sustainability. “Looking ahead to 2023 and the next five years, there are several trends and design trajectories that will influence spaces and products. There is a growing emphasis on biophilic design principles, which focus on the connection between humans and nature,” Konagai told Daily Tribune. [caption id="attachment_150620" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF LIXIL | Oxygen Homestay in Songkhla, Thailand.[/caption] Integrating green spaces, natural materials and access to outdoor views can have a positive impact on mental and physical well-being, promoting a sense of calm and rejuvenation. Indoor air quality, natural ventilation systems and maximizing access to natural light are also key considerations to create healthier and more comfortable environments. “Sustainability continues to be a significant trend in the design industry. LIXIL is committed to incorporating sustainable practices and technologies into our products and solutions. This includes energy-efficient, water-saving technologies, and eco-friendly materials. Designers are increasingly considering renewable energy sources and utilizing recycled or upcycled materials to minimize environmental impact,” Konagai said. Spaces and products that offer flexibility and adaptability are gaining prominence, too. The changing needs of users require designs that can easily transform to accommodate different functions and activities. Modular and flexible furniture, versatile room configurations, and adaptable building systems, potentially accelerated by artificial intelligence, are examples of design approaches that cater to evolving user requirements. [caption id="attachment_150623" align="aligncenter" width="525"] INAX’S S600 line bathroom[/caption] “Inclusion and accessibility are important considerations in design. Spaces and products should be designed to be usable by people of diverse abilities and needs. Universal design principles, such as barrier-free access, intuitive wayfinding, and adjustable features, are being integrated into designs to create inclusive environments,” he said. Design and sustainability are deeply embedded in the company’s values and practices. It is committed to a more sustainable future, guided by its Environmental Vision 2050 which addresses climate change mitigation and adaptation, water sustainability, and the realization of a circular economy. “One aspect of our sustainability efforts is waste reduction. We have set a global target to recycle 90 percent of waste from operations by FYE2026. Throughout our value chain, we are actively working to reduce the use of single-use plastics for packaging. Our GROHE brand has made significant progress in this area, having eliminated over 37 million pieces of plastics packaging. This achievement is a result of rethinking conventional processes to minimize waste and promote reuse or recycling,” Konagai said. Water sustainability is another key focus area. [caption id="attachment_150621" align="aligncenter" width="525"] De Vielle by Amornchai.[/caption] “We recognize the importance of water as a precious resource and design our products to help consumers use water more efficiently. Our toilets feature innovative flushing technologies, such as the American Standard Double Vortex flushing design, rimless toilets, and highly water-efficient systems. These advancements significantly reduce water consumption and the need for cleaning agents for toilet maintenance. Additionally, our faucets and showers are equipped with advanced designs that maintain a steady water flow, minimizing water usage without compromising the consumer experience.” Beyond LIXIL, Konagai believes in the power of partnerships and collaborations to address industry-wide challenges. He said, “We actively engage with government organizations, manufacturers, and civil society partners such as the World Health Organization and the International Water Association. Together, we co-founded ‘A Global Pledge to Protect Drinking Water from Lead at the UN 2023 Water Conference. Through this movement, we collaborate to protect public health and safety, reduce lead exposure from drinking water, and achieve lead-free drinking water by 2040.” “For over a century, our brands have focused on its mission to enable everyone to create a home to love every day. We have always understood that it all begins with each person who aspires for a better life, from houses to hotels, master bath to kitchen sink, and college to stadium, consumers trust and continue to choose solutions to create inviting, intuitive and comfortable spaces,” he added. Konagai has over two decades of consulting and management experience and has held senior positions at Boston Consulting Group and UBS Securities Japan. He holds a master’s and bachelor’s degree from IMD Business School and Keio University respectively. The post The rise of biophilic concept appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
