Galaxies’ bubble dwarfs Milky Way
Astronomers have discovered the first “bubble of galaxies,” a nearly unimaginably massive cosmic structure thought to be a fossilized remnant from just after the Big Bang sitting in our galaxy’s backyard. The bubble is a billion light years across, which makes it 10,000 times wider than the Milky Way galaxy. However, this massive bubble, which cannot be seen with the naked eye, is only 820 million light years away from our home galaxy, in what astronomers refer to as the nearby universe. According to Daniel Pomarede, an astrophysicist at France’s Atomic Energy Commission, the bubble can be thought of as “a spherical shell with a heart.” Inside that heart is the Bootes supercluster of galaxies, which is surrounded by a vast void sometimes called “the Great Nothing.” The shell contains several other galaxy superclusters already known to science, including the massive structure known as the Sloan Great Wall. Pomarede said the discovery of the bubble, which is described in research he co-authored that was published in The Astrophysical Journal this week, was “part of a very long scientific process.” It confirms a phenomenon first described in 1970 by US cosmologist — and future physics Nobel winner — Jim Peebles. He theorized that in the primordial universe — then a stew of hot plasma — the churning of gravity and radiation created sound waves called baryon acoustic oscillations.’ Frozen bubbles As the sound waves rippled through the plasma, they created bubbles. Around 380,000 years after the Big Bang the process stopped as the universe cooled down, freezing the shape of the bubbles. The bubbles then grew larger as the universe expanded, similar to other fossilized remnants from the time after the Big Bang. Astronomers previously detected signals of BAOs in 2005 when looking at data from nearby galaxies. But the newly discovered bubble is the first known single baryon acoustic oscillation, according to the researchers. The astronomers called their bubble Ho’oleilana — “sent murmurs of awakening” — taking the name from a Hawaiian creation chant. The name came from the study’s lead author Brent Tully, an astronomer at the University of Hawaii. The bubble was discovered by chance, as part of Tully’s work searching through new catalogs of galaxies. “It was something unexpected,” Pomarede said. 3D view Tully said in a statement that the bubble is “so huge that it spills to the edges of the sector of the sky that we were analyzing.” The pair enlisted the help of Australian cosmologist and BAO expert Cullan Howlett, who “mathematically determined the spherical structure which best corresponded to the data provided,” Pomarede said. This allowed the trio to visualize the three-dimensional shape of Ho’oleilana — and the position of the archipelagos of galaxies inside it. It may be the first, but more bubbles could soon be spotted across the universe. Europe’s Euclid space telescope, which launched into July, takes in a wide view of the universe, potentially enabling it to snare some more bubbles. Massive radio telescopes called the Square Kilometre Array, being built in South Africa and Australia, could also offer a new image of galaxies from the viewpoint of the Southern Hemisphere, Pomarede said. Billion-light-year-wide ‘bubble of galaxies’ discovered

The bubble spans a billion light years, making it 10,000 times wider than the Milky Way galaxy. Inside that heart is the Bootes supercluster of galaxies, which is surrounded by a vast void sometimes called "the Great Nothing". Stop the reclaiming
Instead of falling for their heavily advertised utopian urban fantasies, it’s best for us to stand firm against the brazen cynicism of the greedy profiteers salivating over the land reclamation on Manila Bay. The brazen cynicism is in the form all of us are easily taken in by — arguments that it’s only by expanding Metro Manila’s urban sprawl through reclamation that we can save the metropolis from itself. That’s a big fat total lie. The incontestable truth is this: We all certainly know that the only way to save the sprawling nightmare that is frenzied by Metro Manila from unmitigated horrors is to decongest it. A decongestion that will only work when people are taken out of the metropolis by spurring economic development away from imperial Metro Manila’s porous borders. That much is a given. Yet, these profit-mad scoundrels arrogantly gaslight each one of us, even managing to hoodwink otherwise sound development policymakers. So much so that they have been able to convince policymakers that the outright banning of reclamation projects on Manila Bay isn’t in our best interest. Recently, for instance, senators were calling ONLY for the suspension of reclamation projects in Manila Bay, citing their adverse impact on the environment and, bizarrely enough, complaints that reclamation will spoil our view of the famed Manila Bay sunset. Secretary Ma. Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources or DENR announced last week the formation of a team to review all ongoing reclamation projects for their impact on the environment. Why a review only now? So many scientific studies have time and again warned that reclamation endangers the delicate environmental balance of the bay. Hadn’t they heard of that? Similarly, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla is pushing for a review of all the contracts for the reclamation projects in Manila Bay, saying the awarding of reclamation contracts by the Philippine Reclamation Authority or PRA was “rushed” and that no public hearings were held. Again, there’s that nasty word “review.” Something is deeply unsettling about mere suspensions and reviews. It conclusively betrays the government’s lack of decisiveness and political will against a portentously disastrous issue! Without ifs, ands, or buts, the government must put out a policy banning outright reclamation on Manila Bay. An explicit and unambiguous policy that will stop all proposals and activities related to reclamation must be put in place at the soonest possible time. There really is a need to get all worked up against reclamation. As things now stand, Metro Manila can hardly cope with its environment. Earlier, I spoke of unmitigated horrors plaguing the metropolis. The metropolis perpetually endures floods, monstrous traffic jams, people crammed into sardine-can living spaces, and whatever else, testifying to the fact the world’s fourth-largest urban area is in depraved chaos. Yet, despite these horrors already causing societal and environmental collapse, our reclamation scoundrels glibly argue that reclamation projects are redemptive. Their arguments are fundamentally wrong. Primarily because reclamation tends to attract and increase further the 24-million population of the metropolis. Also, those planned gleaming urban villages in those reclaimed areas are idiotic come-ons. More likely than not, those villages will be unaffordable to most Metro Manila residents. So much so that employees of businesses in reclaimed areas will likely locate to nearby already densely populated areas. As such, there will be no palpable decrease in Metro Manila’s bursting population density. In addition, our joke of a public transport system will force even more people to take to cars to get themselves to the reclaimed areas. Throw out then any imagined metropolis free of unbearable traffic and pollution. Flooding, too, won’t be finally solved. It will get even worse. As early as 2019, scientists had raised the alarm that the planned reclamations on Manila Bay would not only worsen flooding in Manila, but also submerge coastal villages in the provinces of Bulacan, Pampanga and Cavite. Recent monsoon rains had turned Bulacan and Pampanga into insuperable water worlds. This even without reclamation projects in place. So, you still want those damn reclamations? Good times with people I call family
There are just some people in life whom you can never say no to whenever they call you to celebrate their birthdays or milestones — and even during times they need you when they are down. They are also the same people you go way back with and have been really good friends for ages. Then life happens to keep you busy with other things and takes you on different paths. You end up not seeing each other anymore for long periods of time, but no time nor distance is enough to change your relationship. [caption id="attachment_140634" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Photographs courtesy of Robby David | Bubbles Bermudez, the author and daughter Thea David and Bermudez's son, Liam Aguilar.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_140638" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Bubbles Bermudez with DJ Bombi Balquiedra.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_140636" align="aligncenter" width="525"] The author with Shiela Romero.[/caption] When you see each other again, it’s just like no time has passed. This is exactly the kind of friendship I have with birthday celebrator, Bubbles Bermudez. We came from the same grade school and we both know all the members of our families. On top of that, our firstborns are also good friends of the same batch and they went to the same school we did. So, on a Saturday night (27 May), Bubbles celebrated her birthday at Bar 55 in Poblacion, Makati City. I was excited to attend with my daughter, Thea. The night felt so right as we immediately saw my brother, Rob David, and Liam, Bubbles’ son and good friend of Thea. The place was just the right size for friends and family. I was overjoyed to see more of my best friends from DLSZ, friends I’ve gained from the good old days and the family of Bubbles. Her parents were there with her siblings who are all also very dear to me. It was nice seeing everyone once again. I felt nostalgic and excited to make the night a memorable one. True enough, once Bombi Balquiedra went on deck to play his music, I was just carried away. There was no stopping me from dancing! My daughter and I were convinced that getting a bottle of tequila was the best idea — and it was! Steamed Egg with Clams
For nights when you want to indulge and opt for a quick seafood dish, you can’t go wrong with this silky smooth and rich Steamed Egg with Clams. “It’s really simple to make with just a handful of ingredients that most people already have in their pantries,” says Bea Atienza, foodie, baker and owner of Bellefleur by Beatrix bakeshop. “But when you taste it, it feels like it took a lot more time to complete all the steps.” Clams can be substituted with any seafood of your choice, such as shrimps, mussels or crabs. It’s also best to carefully strain the egg mixture for a smoother finish. Atienza suggests to whisk the egg mixture lightly so as to prevent too many unnecessary bubbles from forming. “This is more of an aesthetic issue but if you skip it, it’s totally fine since you will cover it with the sauce anyway,” she adds. Atienza has been serving this egg-clam dish to her family for three years now. It was a result of constant experimenting in the kitchen during the pandemic. “I was bored at home and couldn’t go out. This was one of the very first things I taught myself to cook during the pandemic because almost everything is available at home. I would just order the clams on MetroMart and have them delivered the day I plan on making the dish,” says Atienza. Steamed Egg with Clams Ingredients: 2 large eggs 1 c warm water 1/2 tsp iodized salt 4-8 clams with shell (raw) 4 thin slices of ginger Toppings: 1/2 tbsp light soy sauce 1/2 tbsp sesame oil chopped scallions and cilantro for garnish Procedure: Bring a small pot of water to a boil. Cook clams with ginger until the clams open. Strain. Beat eggs lightly with water and salt. Strain the egg mixture directly into your preferred dish to keep the custard silky smooth. Add clams and cover tightly with foil. Steam the dish on medium low heat for at least eight minutes, checking if the custard has set with a thin knife. If the knife comes out clean, the dish is ready. Add toppings to your liking, and you’re ready to serve. The post Steamed Egg with Clams appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Guess who brought the fun back
It was early March and I just returned from a quick trip to celebrate my wedding anniversary with my hubby. I wasn’t as sad as I usually am when returning to Manila, because I had my dear friend’s birthday party marked in my calendar. At the time, despite the pandemic still looming over our lives, I was pretty convinced that Covid-19 no longer existed. In fact, I wasn’t the only one who thought so. Almost everyone I know was so ready to party like rock stars after taking a long cumbersome break. So last 10 March, Nicole Whisenhunt — our very own "hostess of the mostest," and one of Manila’s most sought-after jewelry designers, gathered all her friends to do just that. She celebrated at Leon Gallery with the simplest goal of making everyone happy, and WOW! She sure did bring the fun back from the good old pandemic-free days when friends would come together to celebrate and enjoy life, worry-free. It was no doubt a night to remember! [caption id="attachment_132227" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Photographs Courtesy of Dara Roa | (from left) Sheila Romero, the columnist and Bubbles Bermudez.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_132222" align="aligncenter" width="525"] with the birthday celebrator Nicole Whisenhunt.[/caption] The party invite said eight o’clock but getting ready on time is something I need to re-master. But I sure am glad I arrived at 10 p.m. It was the perfect time to get to the party. The band was playing while everyone was in a state of love and happiness. Entering the party was a high in itself as my date (the hubby — Daniel) and I were showered with hugs, merry greetings, and lingering handshakes from friends we haven’t seen in a while. In the middle of this heartwarming entrance, I saw Nicole barefoot and beaming in bliss! I immediately gave her a hug and greeted her, “Happy Birthday.” What a sight! My first instinct from that experience was to head to the bar, while Daniel (my hubby) went straight to the buffet. I must say, we were such a great tandem as there was no time to waste. We had to catch up! The first person I saw after grabbing our drinks was Loralee Soong, and we never separated since then. Daniel and I naturally gravitated towards the lounge set up on the right side of the band. We settled on that spot with our group of friends who have claimed that space before everyone else had. Daniel enjoyed the food and drinks while he chatted with friends. I, on the other hand, barely even sat. The band made it impossible for me to do so. They played '90s music that we all sang along with and danced to. The dance floor became my home. [caption id="attachment_132226" align="aligncenter" width="525"] with Camille Ongpauco.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_132225" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Vania Romoff and Jerika Ejercito.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_132224" align="aligncenter" width="525"] with Loralee Soong.[/caption] Everyone was filled with euphoric energy that brought about loads of laughter, chatter, singing, dancing, and togetherness. The atmosphere didn’t have an ounce of negativity in it. It was that kind of night. To top it all off, our bellies were spoiled by the delicious dishes of Happy Ongpauco. If only we all had bottomless pits as our tummies, we could’ve eaten more. But there was no feeling guilty over what we ate since we definitely worked on our calories dancing the night away to the tunes of the Yellow Lane band. The party ended, but all the guests talked about it for about a week. We laughed at all the stories that popped up from our conversations with most of them extremely funny. I will always remember this birthday party to be a time when I truly felt like we were finally enjoying ourselves without worry. Just like the good old days. It left me hopeful for the future and more confident that only good things will come our way. The post Guess who brought the fun back appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

The atmosphere didn’t have an ounce of negativity in it. It was that kind of night. To top it all off, our bellies were spoiled by the delicious dishes of Happy Ongpauco.
