Livehood kits for families in Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao
It has been over a year since typhoon “Odette” devastated provinces in the Visayas region, but its impact still remains especially among residents whose livelihoods were severely affected. For Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc.-Microfinance, Aboitiz Foundation Inc. and Pilmico Foods Corporation, recovery is the most important step for communities and families to be able to bounce back and become more resilient. On their second year of “Padayon sa Pagbusay (Paddle Unceasingly)” program, the Aboitiz business units gave egg machine livelihood kits to several families in Samar, Leyte, Negros Oriental and Misamis Oriental. In addition to the egg machines, the families will be provided technical and knowledge assistance to help them manage their businesses better. Aboitiz Foundation president and chief operating officer Maribeth Marasigan highlighted the importance of empowering recovering communities. “We in the Aboitiz Foundation try our best to help the communities where we operate. We want to see the communities rise and succeed. Our goal is to help them recover and become more resilient communities. We thank our local partners, the Aboitiz business units, who came together to extend valuable assistance,” she said. The group’s integrated agribusiness and food subsidiary said it is always ready to extend assistance across the nation. “At Pilmico, we’re not just supporting farmers, we’re aiming to elevate the agriculture industry as a whole. With the help of the Aboitiz Foundation, our commitment to empowering farmers nationwide extends beyond this project. It’s a testament to our unwavering dedication to advancing business and communities,” said Greg Canoy, CSR supervisor of Pilmico. Last year’s beneficiaries of the group’s livelihood kits were in Cebu and Samar. Each kit included an egg machine, 144 ready-to-lay hens, Pilmico feeds, a weighing scale and animal health products. “I thank Pilmico, Aboitiz Foundation and RAFI-MFI for choosing me as one of the beneficiaries for this project. This huge opportunity will be of great help to us. Thank God for this blessing,” said Marietta Cadayday, one of the beneficiaries. “Padayon sa Pagbusay” is part of RAFI-MFI’s livelihood program that aims to empower families by providing them with sustainable livelihood opportunities. “This is the start of our rebuilding, which includes rebuilding our businesses and lives, not just ours but our families and communities where we belong. These livelihood kits, which I am thankful for, would be impossible without our partners. We have our grantors who unselfishly helped us in Leyte, Negros Oriental and Misamis Oriental,” said Iris Dorado, vice president for Business Development of RAFI-MFI. JPMorgan Chase to pay $75 mn to settle Epstein-linked sex trafficking suit
JPMorgan Chase announced Tuesday that it will pay $75 million to settle a US Virgin Islands' (USVI) lawsuit that accused the bank of facilitating Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking ring. The big US bank, which previously reached a $290 million settlement with Epstein's victims, also announced an agreement with former JPMorgan executive Jes Staley for an undisclosed sum. These cases together resolve the bank's remaining litigation over its embarrassing long-running association with the late Epstein. The agreement with the USVI came a few weeks ahead of a scheduled trial in New York that likely would have bruised both sides. While the USVI accused JPMorgan of turning a "blind eye" to Epstein's conduct due to profit concerns, the bank levied essentially the same charge against USVI, saying the government helped Epstein obtain visas that allowed him to bring victims to the island. The settlement, which must be approved by a US court, includes $30 million to support USVI charitable organizations, $25 million to enhance USVI law enforcement to combat human trafficking and $20 million in attorneys' fees. JPMorgan did not admit liability as part of the settlement, but the "firm deeply regrets any association with this man, and would never have continued doing business with him if it believed he was using the bank in any way to commit his heinous crimes," the bank said in a statement. "JPMorgan believes this settlement is in the best interest of all parties," the bank said. The USVI had originally sought $190 million in damages for the bank's role in enabling Epstein's sex crimes, including in the Virgin Islands, where he had a residence. The USVI said JPMorgan "knowingly, negligently, and unlawfully provided and pulled the levers through which recruiters and victims were paid and was indispensable to the operation and concealment of the Epstein trafficking enterprise," according the original complaint. Bank hits back The bank hit back forcefully, saying in a May legal filing that the USVI government was "complicit in the crimes of Jeffrey Epstein." Under a "quid pro quo" relationship with top USVI officials, Epstein "gave them advice, influence, and favors," JPMorgan said in the filing. "In exchange, they shielded and even rewarded him... looking the other way when he walked through USVI airports accompanied by girls and young women." US Virgin Islands Attorney General Ariel Smith said Tuesday the agreement would prevent human trafficking in the future. "This settlement is an historic victory for survivors and for state enforcement, and it should sound the alarm on Wall Street about banks' responsibilities under the law to detect and prevent human trafficking," Smith said. "We are proud to have stood alongside the survivors throughout this litigation, and this settlement reflects our continued commitment to them," Smith said. The USVI press release listed a number of "substantial commitments" by JPMorgan to combat human trafficking, including informing law enforcement of perpetrators and terminating customers' accounts if there is credible evidence of wrongdoing. But a JPMorgan spokesperson said the bank has not changed or fortified its policies due to the accord. "There are no new commitments. Our controls, compliance, risk, and other functions are always improving, and we are continually investing to become even better," said JPMorgan's Trish Wexler. "We have always worked closely with law enforcement to help combat human trafficking, and we will continue to look for ways to invest in advancing this important mission." Education rises via Sara — Bongbong
Filipino students’ learning curve will bounce back from delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said in his second State of the Nation Address. Under the helm of Vice President and Department of Education, or DepEd, Secretary Sara Duterte, the President is confident that every Filipino student will get a quality education. “We have renewed hope in giving the best to our next batches of students, especially the 28.4 million learners who returned to school this year. Learning recovery will be at the forefront of our education agenda,” Marcos said. The “Matatag Agenda” for basic education, the President said, will continue to focus on the relevance of curriculum, rapid and responsive delivery, and the welfare of both learners and teachers. “We are augmenting our school workforce,” he said, noting that 90 percent of the newly created teaching positions have been filled, while additional administrative personnel have been hired to unburden the teachers. “Matatag” (Stable) involves making the curriculum relevant to produce competent and job-ready, active, and responsible citizens; taking steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education facilities and services, including plans to build more resilient schools and classrooms in 2023 and around 6,000 classrooms; taking good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment; and giving support to teachers to teach better. VP thankful The Vice President expressed her gratitude to President Marcos for fully supporting her agency’s educational reforms and for pushing the development agenda for Mindanao. “His unremitting support of the reforms introduced by the Department of Education to the education system through the MATATAG Agenda will benefit not only our learners but also the teaching and non-teaching staff of the department,” Duterte said. Duterte, a Mindanaoan, said she was pleased to hear the Marcos administration’s development agenda for Mindanao. The Vice President was a former mayor of Davao City. “It offers us hope and gives a deep sense of optimism that the efforts to stamp out terrorism and the peace-building initiatives of the past administrations are strengthened to bring about meaningful development for the region and its people,” she said. “The same hope and optimism resound across the country with the implementation of his administration’s socio-economic agenda, providing security to vulnerable sectors such as farmers and fisherfolk,” she added. According to Duterte, President Marcos’s leadership is marked by decisiveness, strength, fortitude and political will. “It is the kind of leadership that inspires us to be more aggressive in delivering what we have promised to the Filipino people,” she said. “Thank you, Apo BBM, for reminding us of our obligation to our country — an obligation contained in the contract we signed with the Filipino people in the 2022 election,” the Vice President added. ANGKAS: Driving force of the future
Millions of commuters brave the road every single day. At the same time, being on the road and picking up passengers despite unpredictable weather conditions and uncertain times has become the primary source of income for drivers — and this is how Angkas become a driving force for both commuters and drivers despite the worsening transportation crisis in the Philippines. Angkas CEO George Royeca is a beacon of hope for commuters struggling to find a ride amid bustling crowds and everyone who wants to earn money from ride-hailing. "We're looking at empowering the informal sector, particularly those that own a motorcycle. We can quickly help reinforce the motorcycle as a business concept to many Filipino brothers and sisters so they can lead a good life," Royeca said in a recent interview. Bounce back As pandemic restrictions ease and more Filipinos return to the road since last year, Angkas champions as one of the best ride-hailing companies in the Philippines, offering an affordable and reliable ride that commuters can enjoy without compromising their safety. During the pandemic's peak, back riding on motorcycles has been limited to people within the same household. With the government allowing Angkas to reopen its services to the public, it became a viable option for commuters, considering the seating capacity restrictions of trains, buses, and other public utility vehicles. With Angkas' upstanding performance in serving Filipinos in their everyday lives, Royeca is optimistic about the mobile application's future in the market. "I'm thrilled that every person that we talk to, whether they're from the government or the private sector, they believe in this industry that we have been able to establish, and I think that we have proven that it is a safe form of transportation and also an affordable option, alternative to the existing transportation public utility vehicles," he said. Royeca also mentioned expanding the mobile application to the informal sector. "Outside Manila, there's still a lot of habal-habals (motorcycles-for-hire) that are informal, and it is time to make them a part of the legitimized (system)," Royeca said, believing that all riders should experience the same opportunities as Angkas riders. With the Republic Act 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, private owners of motorcycles can be sued when they accept or transport passengers in exchange for payment. Despite good intentions to provide an alternative and ease commuter needs, habal-habal remains unregulated and illegal under Republic Act no. 4136 — and it becomes heavily discouraged by the authorities since private riders cannot offer safety or insurance when extreme circumstances arise. Fulfilling dreams Angkas bring forward a positive change towards their bikers in pushing through with their goals and life aspirations. A living testament to Angkas' strong commitment towards its bikers is Kleiy Zarus Escalona, an Angkas rider who was able to graduate with a degree in BS Criminology. In a Facebook post that garnered a positive reaction from netizens, Escalona thanked Angkas for helping him finish his studies while earning at the side. “SALAMAT ANGKAS since 2017 hanggang ngayon ANGKAS kasama kita. Laking tulong mo sa mga estudyante(ng) nakakapaghanapbuhay ka ng hindi nakaka-abala sa pag-aaral mo kaya maraming salamat sayo (Angkas) nakapagtapos ako ng pag-aaral sa kursong BS CRIMINOLOGY, (Thank you Angkas for being with me since 2017. You are a big help to working students that’s why I am thankful to Angkas because I was able to finish my studies with a degree in BS Criminology.)” the Facebook post reads. Escalona's story proves how perseverance and hard work pay off. At the same time, it is a story that shows how Angkas' business model helps its riders have a productive and meaningful life outside the ride-hailing platform. Royeca is proud of the rider for his success, adding that Angkas firmly adheres to creating more job opportunities and alleviating poverty. Royeca confirmed that 30,000 registered bikers on their platform are out of the poverty line — and they will continue to extend their services to the Filipino people. With more than seven to eight million downloads of the mobile application, Royeca is hopeful and persistent in bringing the well-loved ride-hailing service to cities outside Metro Manila in the future. "We're hopeful that we can open up and provide services to the places that needed it the most, which are the provinces, so I think there is a lot of opportunity there," Royeca said, noting that Angkas is on the process of extending their reach outside Metro Manila, including Cebu and Cagayan de Oro. Carlos Agassi released a transphobic rap song, ‘aspires’ to be Rendon
Carlos Agassi (remember him?) apparently released a transphobic rap song, and no one heard about it until Mela Habijan, beauty queen and trans activist, called him out on it. Carlos “Amir” Agassi was one of The Hunks, a loosely assembled group of ABS-CBN leading men composed of Piolo Pascual, Jericho Rosales, John Lloyd, and Diether Ocampo, where “Amir” was always considered the least popular. Agassi’s novelty "rap" called “Milk Tea” is very explicit and formulated for clickbait. Habijan and other netizens called out a particular line. “”Venti ang kanyang milk tea. Sa dami ng binibini. Nakabingwit ako ng binabai.” Habijan called out Agassi on Twitter. ”I understand that you may be trying to revive your showbiz career or at the least, be relevant, but I suggest, do it right! The ingredients to how people bounce back in life: real talent, hard work, charisma, and treating people right. Work on these!” Agassi has doubled down, and has gone the way of Rendon Labador’s schtick of trying to get a rise out of people. “Ako sumikat ikaw laos na di pa sumisikat huhu iyak yarn, hanap kakampi.” The lyrics are ironic considering rumors that Agassi is gay have followed him for all of his career. He has also tried to pass the lyrics off as a “romantic comedy”, but no one seems to be buying that argument. This uber show of machismo has always been Agassi's schtick in a field of talented and accomplished actors where he could not compete, but the crass and explicit “rap” is obviously a desperate grab for notoriety and clicks, which is already a crowded field of online personalities, riddled with many players. It’s probably why it didn’t even make a dent in the news cycle when it was released two weeks ago, and up until now only has 14,000 views. In fact, he’s so desperate for views he’s offered a P10,000 raffle prize to people who will share the video. NBA star Curry makes hole-in-one at celebrity golf event
NBA superstar Stephen Curry made a hole-in-one on Saturday in the second round of a celebrity golf tournament and ran to the green in celebration of the feat. Curry, a four-time NBA champion guard for the Golden State Warriors, is known as an avid golfer, having even played in a 2017 developmental tour event. The two-time NBA scoring champion and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player made his ace at the par-3 seventh hole at the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe South Course in Stateline, Nevada. Curry's tee shot took one bounce and went into the hole, prompting a cheer from the crowd. Curry began running to the green, taking off his cap and waving a "No. 1" right finger into the air. He raised both arms, threw the glove off his left hand to the fans, and leaped into the air as he reached the green. After that, he smacked the flagstick with his left hand, ran around the entire green, and finally fell back onto the ground under the shade of a tree with a huge smile on his face. "That was 140 yards and not 94 feet," Curry said, comparing the length of the hole to that of an NBA court. "But wow. Wow. I'll be out of breath for the rest of the day -- for a good reason, though." Curry, who began golfing at age 10, had made only one prior ace. "That was my second one ever," Curry said. "I'm locked in right down, but to do it on this hole is unbelievable. Wow. Wow." The ace gave him 43 points in the three-day celebrity competition, stretching his lead over US tennis player Mardy Fish. PAGCOR strengthens controls to make Phl a significant gaming destination
Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation chairman and CEO Alejandro H. Tengco discussed the agency's plans and programs to make the Philippines a leading gaming destination in the ASEAN region. Chairman Tengco was invited to deliver the keynote address on the third day of the G2E Asian IR Summit in Macau on 13 July 2023. In his speech, the PAGCOR chief expressed optimism that with the gaming regulatory reforms which the agency is undertaking, the Philippine gaming industry will be more responsive to the needs of the changing times while addressing the social ills that come with gaming operations. The Philippine gaming industry started to bounce back as it gradually transitioned into the new normal. Following its mandate to regulate and uphold the integrity of gaming operations in the Philippines, PAGCOR generated P58.96 billion in 2022, an impressive 66.16 percent year-on-year increase from its P35.48 billion total income in 2021. Net income last year reached P4.45 billion, a 2,000% leap from P203.57 million recorded in 2021. This achievement enabled the agency to fulfill its other role as the government's partner in generating revenues for socio-civic programs by increasing its contributions to nation-building from P22.91 billion in 2021 to P34.67 billion in 2022. Given PAGCOR's dual role as operator and regulator, its operations have been scrutinized by crucial decision-makers and major gaming industry players. Thus, since its assumption a year ago, the new PAGCOR Board of Directors has started strengthening the agency's regulatory function and has promoted the privatization of PAGCOR-run Casino Filipino facilities. Such a move will allow the corporation to grow and compete in both domestic and international markets by infusing new capital and advanced technologies, which can facilitate expansions, upgrades, and innovations. "By focusing on its regulatory functions, PAGCOR will be able to avoid the complexities of running two different shows. It can also streamline its processes and create more revenues to fund more high-impact government projects," Tengco said. However, before PAGCOR gaming venues are privatized, they will be upgraded to add value to the properties. Programs include the modernization of Information and Communication Technology and Cybersecurity infrastructure, including its Casino Management System and introduction of the Casino Filipino Online; upgrading of more than 3,000 electronic gaming machines (EGMs); and updating PAGCOR Technical Standards for EGMs. To combat the proliferation of illegal gambling in the country, PAGCOR coordinates with various law enforcement agencies. It has instituted reforms to address the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations, recently associated with crime, money laundering, and corruption. It has canceled the contract entered by the previous Board with the third-party auditor for offshore gaming operations, introduced new fees, and imposed heavy fines and penalties on licensees and service providers engaged in criminal activities. Furthermore, accreditations were suspended and canceled, and licensees were held responsible for the conduct of their service providers. Despite these, online gaming operations' gross revenue is projected to reach P24 billion by the end of this year, more than double last year's P11 billion. Tengco stated, "We shall undertake this painstaking process to weed out the unscrupulous companies and individuals using the PAGCOR license for illegal activities, tainting the name of the whole industry, especially the Philippines." PAGCOR has likewise accredited Gaming System Service Providers for Traditional Bingo, Electronic Bingo, Electronic (eCasino) Games, Sports Betting, and E-Billiards. Its licensed casinos were recently allowed to use remote gaming platforms for live casino games catering to their registered casino players. PAGCOR is studying the possibility of regulating other facets of overseas gaming operations or regulating a particular class of business process outsourcing. Through closed borders during the COVID-19 pandemic, PAGCOR has evolved and continues to adapt to the changing times by licensing new gaming options within its jurisdiction and adequately regulating them. "I know much still needs to be done, but I believe that we are on the right track towards making the Philippines a prime gaming destination in the ASEAN region," Tengco concluded.
