Rolling Stones album of new songs out next month
The Rolling Stones will release their first album of new music in 18 years next month, lead singer Mick Jagger, fellow founding bandmate Keith Richards and bass guitarist Ronnie Wood announced Wednesday in London. The album, "Hackney Diamonds", is the first since the death of drummer Charlie Watts in 2019, and the first containing original material since 2005's "A Bigger Bang". "We didn't want to make just any record and put it out," Jagger, 80, told a launch event at the Hackney Empire theatre in east London, hosted by US talk show host Jimmy Fallon and livestreamed on YouTube. "I'm not saying we're big-headed about it but we're pleased with it and we hope you all like it," the octogenarian rocker said. The Stones' 24th studio album, set for release on October 20, has 12 tracks, with the single "Angry" the first to come out. Wood, 76, confirmed during the launch that superstar Lady Gaga features on another, "Sweet Sound of Heaven", adding she "sings really sweet" on it. Two of the tracks were recorded with Watts in 2019. The others feature Steve Jordan, whom Watts recommended to replace him. "Ever since Charlie's gone it's different," said 79-year-old guitarist Keith Richards of recording the new album without one of the band's founders. "He's number four, he's missing, he's up there. Of course he's missed incredibly." Already acclaimed "Hackney diamonds" is English slang for the shards of glass left scattered on the ground after smash-and-grab robberies, and refers to the historically working class east London neighbourhood. "It's like when you get your windscreen broken on a Saturday night in Hackney," Jagger joked. Throngs of people crowded outside the event venue, including those without tickets who came out of curiosity and hoping to spot the band. "I've been following the Stones since I was four years old and I'm from round here -- it's my backyard," said musician and fan Rory McGlinchey. "It's crazy that they're here!" Wearing a Rolling Stones t-shirt, he said the new release was "great news". "Can't wait," he told AFP. Critics have already hailed the release as the band's best work in many decades. Will Hodgkinson, rock and pop critic for Britain's The Times newspaper, said it is "unquestionably the best Stones album since 1978's 'Some Girls'". "Variously poignant, irreverent, anarchic and, in one gospel-tinged moment, quite spiritual, it touches on all the aspects we love about the band, glued together by the rambunctious energy they have made their own since the early Sixties," he wrote. The Daily Telegraph's music reviewer Neil McCormick said "Angry" was "their best single in four decades". The Stones also unveiled the single's typically rock'n'roll video. It sees the band playing from Los Angeles' billboards as scantily-dressed, leather-clad "Euphoria" actress Sydney Sweeney writhes to the soundtrack in the back of a convertible red Mercedes driving through the city. Teaser The Rolling Stones' last studio album was 2016's "Blue & Lonesome", which was made up of blues covers. "We've been very lazy," said Jagger. "We've been on the road most of the time." The band teased the release of the new album through a spoof advert in the local Hackney Gazette newspaper. The cryptic ad, which also appeared in sister title the Islington Gazette, referenced several of the band's best-known songs including "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", "Gimme Shelter" and "Shattered". The ad went on: "Opening our new store on Mare Street, September 2023. Our friendly team promises you satisfaction when you say gimme shelter we'll fix your shattered windows." Clues that the ad was not for a bona fide east London glass repair business included a miniature version of the band's famed lips logo to dot the letter i. The ad -- in the same font as the "Some Girls" album -- also says the firm was established in 1962, the same year the band was formed. Last year the Stones travelled through Europe for their 60th anniversary tour which featured stops in cities including Madrid, Milan and Munich, and also a performance at British Summer Time (BST) festival in London. Asked for the secret to their decades-spanning musical marriage, Jagger quipped: "not speaking too often". "How to say shut up politely," added Richards. Slovenia celebrates UNESCO recognition for renowned Lipizzan horses
People watched in awe as the world-renowned Lipizzan horses put on a dazzling show this month in the village of Lipica in the small Alpine state of Slovenia. The home of one of the world's most distinguished horse breeds -- and seven countries in the region that once were part of the Habsburg Empire -- have reason to celebrate. Their shared tradition of Lipizzan breeding recently made UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The noble Lipizzans, also known as Lipizzaners, are descendants of long stallion lines crossing Spanish, Arabic and Berber horses and were first bred by the Habsburg court in the 16th century. They are famous for their "airs above the ground" classical dressage jumps -- a series of difficult movements requiring strength and precision, in which the horse's feet leave the ground. This rare breed -- featuring white hair but grey skin -- is also famed as a carriage horse. The name derives from tiny Lipica, nestled among Slovenia's verdant hills and lush forests. The picturesque village is home to one of the world's oldest stud farms, which dates back to 1580 and currently stables more than 400 blue-blooded horses. "This is the Lipizzan's home," said Slovenian culture minister Asta Vrecko, ahead of the UNESCO ceremony last weekend. The event was attended by the eight countries that jointly applied for recognition of their shared breeding heritage -- Austria, Bosnia, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. For a moment, time stood still as horses and riders from the eight nations performed their dressage and driving exhibition. "They are phenomenal animals. The way that they've been trained and the level of skill of the riders is incredible," said 42-year-old horse farm owner Laura Highlander, who travelled all the way from the United States to see the horses. "I was super excited to be able to come... and see them in their training," she added after visiting the Lipica stud farm. Equine ballet Dark at birth, the Lipizzan horses' coat turns white by the time they are about four years old, which is also when their demanding training starts and the most promising stallions are selected. "Lipizzans can have a strong temperament. They are usually serene, sometimes shy. They are kind and it is up to us to recognize the quality of each horse," Miro Dragic, head of the Lipica stud farm riders' team, told AFP. If health permits, these athletic equine stars, can be worth up to several hundred thousand euros (dollars) each, and can remain active well into their mid-20s. Only the best stallions will be trained in the elitist "haute ecole" of classical dressage to eventually master an equine ballet of cantering, caprioles and pirouettes. The riders, who sport tailcoats and Napoleonic bicorne hats, must also be at the top of their game to get the best from their sensitive partners. "With horses it's like with people. There are many external elements -- weather included -- that can affect them," stableman Amadej Cej told AFP while grooming one of his elegant stallions. It's stablemen like Cej who spend quality time with these beautiful creatures, attending to their every need "from birth until their end". Matteo Guidicelli livens up GMA-7’s morning show ‘Unang Hirit’
"May karibal na si Atom Araullo sa GMA Public Affairs programs sa kaguwapuhan!" That's the talk in some circles since Thursday, 11 May, when it was announced that showbiz idol Matteo Guidecelli has officially joined GMA Public Affairs, the division where Araullo, Jessica Soho, Mel Tiangco, Mike Enriquez, Cara David and Ivan Mayrina belong. [caption id="attachment_133078" align="aligncenter" width="1734"] PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF GMA-7 Matteo Guidicelli is now a Kapuso.[/caption] It's a division totally different from the network's entertainment TV, which puts up shows like the new Voltes V: The Legacy and Maria Clara at Ibarra. Guidecelli received a grand welcome during the contract-signing and media conference at Vertis Seda Hotel attended by top network executives. GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe Gozon welcomed Guidicelli through a video message. The network's Public Affairs produces the newsy morning show Unang Hirit which immediately absorbed Guidicelli as one of its hosts beginning last Monday, 15 May. The same division also produces the well-followed drama anthology Magpakailanman, hosted by Tiango. The division is all set to produce an action-drama primetime series dubbed Black Rider with Guidicelli, a champion car racer for some years before he entered showbiz, joining GMA 7-managed star Ruru Madrid as lead actor. Will the husband of superstar Sarah Geronimo have a chance to do documentaries like the ones Araullo has become famous and highly-esteemed for? Declared GMA Public Affairs' recent statement about their new asset (shared with Viva Artist Agency which still manages Guidicelli): "... And with GMA Public Affairs being the home of world-class and award-winning Filipino documentaries, Matteo will be part of a documentary special about nature." Added the GMA statement: "Viewers should also watch out for Matteo’s upcoming shows in GMA, including exciting projects with GMA Regional TV and Synergy." First day Guidicelli is also slated to play with a team in Family Feud, the quiz show vibrantly hosted by Dingdong Dantes. It's not known yet who Guidicelli will recruit to his team. Would Viva Artists Agency allow Geronimo to join him in Family Feud? Geronimo is still a top Kapamilya star. On his first day in Unang Hirit, Guidicelli turned up in a casual get-up of light blue long-sleeves, white pants and white rubber shoes. His co-hosts welcomed him with what they called "start-up gift packs" ranging from an alarm clock and coffee flask to a motorcycle from Arnold Clavio (the brand must be one of the show's sponsors). The actor greeted the show's viewers in Filipino and in Cebuano, since he grew up in Cebu. He also greeted the love of his life who he said was watching the show even as they stayed up late Sunday night watching Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho. The new man on the house is also a well-known chef, and cooking breakfast for his co-hosts became his first task on the show. He jauntily revealed that at home he really does a lot of cooking "para lang sa asawa," whom he unfailingly greeted with “Hello, Love”. It's great and refreshing to watch a married, handsome and youthful man greeting his wife in the morning five days a week. Guidicelli is now 33, and Geronimo will be 35 in July this year. Let's wait and see how Guidicelli would turn up in the realm of documentaries. Will he just be a glamorous narrator-host or will he go out and get the stories himself? Would he be as daring and fearless as Araullo in his documentaries? Guidicelli has had military training with the Philippine Army. And he was a daring car racer, remember? New public-service program Meanwhile, GMA Public Affairs now has a multi-platform public service program on Sundays, its first to be aired both on TV and on radio, plus other Kapuso platforms. Resibo: Walang Lusot Ang May Atraso is hosted by journo Emil Sumangi, who is a co-host of Kim Atienza and Patricia Tumulak on the daily news magazine show at 5:30 pm. Resibo is Sumangil's first solo TV program after several years of being a field reporter on GMA 7. It was launched on 7 May. The public is invited to reach out to Resibo for complaints and grievances via the hotline number 0917-7RESIBO, e-mail resibo@gmanetwork.com and its Facebook page. They can also visit GMA Action Center, Kapuso Center Building, GMA Network Drive, Diliman in Quezon City. Resibo: Walang Lusot ang May Atraso airs 5 p.m. on GMA, GTV, DZBB Super Radyo and GMA Public Affairs’ Facebook, YouTube and Tiktok livestream.
