Netflix sends out last DVD
Streaming powerhouse Netflix mailed out its last DVD on Friday, ending service after 25 years that helped the company grow into an entertainment behemoth. Founder Reed Hastings has often said that he started the company in a pique of frustration with the Blockbuster rental store that charged him $40 for returning the movie Apollo 13 six weeks late. Out of that eventually came the idea for a subscription-based DVD-by-mail service that let the customer hold onto the title as long as they wanted. Once viewed, the DVD was slipped into a prepaid envelope and sent back to the company, with the subscriber's next choice sent on its way in exchange. "In 1998, we delivered our first DVD. This morning, we shipped our last," the company said on its website on Friday. "For 25 years, we redefined how people watched films and series at home and shared the excitement as they opened their mailboxes to our iconic red envelopes," the statement added. In April, when the decision to stop DVD rentals was announced, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said those "iconic" mailings "changed the way people watched shows and movies at home -- and they paved the way for the shift to streaming." On its site, the company said the mail service accumulated 40 million unique subscribers throughout its run, mainly in the United States. The streaming platform currently has 238 million subscribers worldwide. Netflix said that the first movie mailed out was the comedy Beetlejuice and that more than 5.2 billion DVDs have been sent out since then. The most-rented DVD was the US sports drama "The Blind Side" starring Sandra Bullock. That feel-good movie, about a white family that takes in a Black homeless child, was released in 2009 when the DVD service was at the height of its popularity. That movie has since proved controversial after the former NFL star and subject of the film Michael Oher said the portrayal was exaggerated and filled with inaccuracies. Paul Reubens aka Pee-wee Herman dies of cancer at 70
Actor and comedian Paul Reubens, known for his portrayal of children’s TV star Pee-wee Herman, lost his life to cancer on 30 July at the age of 70. According to a statement posted on his Facebook account, Reubens “bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit.” “A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit,” it added. The statement included a personal apology from Reubens on why he had kept his cancer diagnosis private. “Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans, and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you,” he said. Reubens started his career in 1970 as part of the Los Angeles live comedy troupe Groundlings. He launched The Pee-wee Herman Show in 1980. The beloved children’s character was known for his white chunky loafers, red bow tie and the catchphrase “I know you are but what am I.” In 1991, Reubens was arrested for indecent exposure at an adult movie theater in Sarasota, Florida, a controversy that dealt a major blow to his career. He reprised the iconic children’s role on Broadway in 2010. Enrique Gil makes comeback in ‘sexy comedy’ film
After a three-year hiatus, ABS-CBN star Enrique Gil is making his movie comeback with a sexy comedy. The 31-year-old actor announced on Wednesday through a media launch that he is set to join a comedy film that will air this year under the direction of Victor Villanueva and writers Joma Labayen and Lilit Santos. The movie, titled I Am Not Big Bird, is co-produced by ABS-CBN Films, ANIMA Studios, and Black Sheep Films. Gil’s last movie outing was the hit Alone/Together, co-starring his long-time onscreen partner, Liza Soberano. [caption id="attachment_158091" align="aligncenter" width="953"] AFTER a three-year hiatus, ABS-CBN star Enrique Gil (left most) is making his movie comeback with a sexy comedy.PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY IG/ NIKKO NATIVIDAD[/caption] Riotous comedy In I Am Not Big Bird, he will play the role of Luis Carpio, a Filipino tourist who, as the actor put it, “reconnects with his barkada, goes to Thailand for this crazy adventure and, pagdating doon, kamukha niya si Big Bird”. In the story, Big Bird is a Thai porn actor. Writer Lilit Santos said the film’s story was inspired by a real incident that took place during a foreign trip they had in the 2000s. “Dinudumog kami, ‘di dahil sa amin, sa kasama ko. We found out that my friend looks exactly like a Japanese porn actor,” Santos recalled. So “it’s a nice riotous comedy — male barkada na magtatravel ng barko pero ‘di alam ng bida natin na may kamukha siyang porn actor sa Thailand,” Santos added. Joining Gil in the movie are Pepe Herrera, Nikko Natividad, and Red Ollero. Director Villanueva was behind the 2016 film Patay na si Hesus, which won the Jury’s Choice Award during the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino held that year. ‘Back to zero’ Gil said that, having come from a long hiatus, “parang back to zero na rin ako. It’s going to feel new again.” The new film, he stressed, means he’s open to doing other genres now aside from the rom-com that he had previously starred in. For this venture, Gil also created his own production company to co-produce the film. “I want to leave a legacy somewhat, so I created this production company to focus on creating projects that can break through internationally,” Gil said in an interview. I Am Not Big Bird is expected to be shown this year in the country, with an international screening being eyed early next year. US actor David Corenswet cast as next Superman
Rising US star David Corenswet will become the latest actor to don Superman's famous red cape, director James Gunn confirmed Tuesday. The 29-year-old, best known as the lead of recent Netflix series "Hollywood," will take on the iconic role for "Superman: Legacy," due in 2025 from Warner Bros. The news was first reported by various Hollywood trade publications, which also revealed that Rachel Brosnahan, star of multiple Emmy-winning comedy "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," is set to play Lois Lane. "Accurate! (They are not only both incredible actors, but also wonderful people)," wrote Gunn, retweeting the Hollywood Reporter's article. Given Superman's status in pop culture, the role is considered one of the most high-profile, and highly scrutinized, going in Hollywood. Superman has previously been played on the big screen by Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh and, most recently, Henry Cavill. British actor Cavill, star of Superman films such as 2013's "Man of Steel," briefly returned to the role for the post-credits scene of last year's "Black Adam." But last year, Warner -- itself under new leadership after merging with Discovery -- placed "Guardians of the Galaxy" director Gunn in charge of all movies tied to DC Comics superheroes, alongside "Aquaman" producer Peter Safran. The duo were charged with revitalizing the DC films, which have lagged at the box office in comparison to the rival, record-grossing Marvel superhero films, and have endured a series of recent duds including "The Flash." They quickly signaled a new direction for the franchise, and have been busy recasting the role of Superman since. ‘Spider-Man’ swings back to top of the box office
Jostling for the top three spots in North American theaters this weekend was the same films from last week, with "The Flash" overtaken by the latest "Spider-Man" iteration. The debut of the raunchy comedy "No Hard Feelings," as well as that of "Asteroid City," the latest offering from cult director Wes Anderson, failed to get past last weekend's top-earning films, although analysts said they performed well for their respective genres. Sony's "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" took in $19.3 million over the weekend, according to Sunday estimates from Exhibitor Relations, bringing its domestic total to more than $317 million, with showings in international theaters pushing the cumulative global earnings to $560 million. The film, a sequel to 2018's "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and the latest spin on the Marvel Comics superhero, picks up the story of half-Black, half-Latino Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore. Pixar's animated immigrant fable "Elemental," which also held last week's No. 2 spot, earned $18.4 million, bringing its total to $65 million. Warner Bro.'s "The Flash" took the third spot, earning $15.2 million a week after it opened at number one, bringing its box-office war chest to $87.6 million so far. "No Hard Feelings," Sony's R-rated offering starring Jennifer Lawrence, debuted this weekend in fourth place. The movie's $15.1 million haul is "a good opening for an original romantic/sex comedy, at above-average levels for the genre," said analyst David A. Gross, writing for industry newsletter FranchiseRe. "After a long decline between 2015 and 2022, romantic/sex comedies are growing again," Gross said, with "Joy Ride" and "Barbie" coming out next month. Amid the spin-offs and sequels dominating the box office this weekend, Paramount's "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" brought in $11.6 million, for fifth place. Next in line, following a limited release last week, was Focus Features' "Asteroid City," from off-beat director Anderson, for $9 million. While that's a far cry from the $120 million netted by "Spider-Man" its opening weekend, it represents "a very good opening for a specialty independent comedy," Gross said. Rounding out the top 10 were "The Little Mermaid" ($8.6 million), "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" ($3.5 million), "The Blackening" ($3 million), and "The Boogeyman" ($2.5 million). Pride screenings showcase a rainbow of stories
Cinema is one of the most engaging artforms and creative expressions through which the LGBTQ+ community documents their lived experiences, conveys their desires and struggles, celebrates their identities and advocates for reforms and deeper understanding. Thus, film screenings are popular activities during LGBTQ+ Pride Month. This year, several institutions, streaming service companies and film groups are mounting screenings, giving these works more opportunities to reach more audiences. Here is a rundown: FDCP’s Pelikulaya LGBTQIA+ Film Festival The Film Development Council of the Philippines brings back the Pelikulaya LGBTQIA+ Film Festival this year with the theme “Mga Kuwentong Mapagpalaya” (Liberating Stories), and the aim is training the spotlight “on underrepresented members of the LGBTQIA+ community to promote a better understanding of inclusivity, diversity and equality.” According to Tirso Cruz III, FDCP chairman and chief executive officer, Pelikulaya “aims to raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ issues. We believe that by using the power of film, we can do our part in showcasing films that celebrate LGBTQIA+ stories. Hoping to create understanding of the lives, perspectives and advocacies shown in each film.” “With that, the FDCP sends our love and gratitude to you all for being with us, and we hope you’ll have a memorable experience in all of our Cinematheque Centres across the Philippines,” he added. To be held from 23 to 30 June, Pelikulaya will screen titles at the Cinematheque Centres in Manila, Davao, Iloilo, Nabunturan and Bacolod, and several theaters in Metro Manila including Cinema ‘76 and UP Film Institute’s Cine Adarna/Videotheque. Some of the titles will also be available for streaming on JuanFlix (www.juanflix.com.ph) starting 30 June with a subscription fee.
