‘The Eras Tour’ serves up Taylor Swift, larger than life
That Taylor Swift is a great songwriter is no longer in question. What’s up for debate is whether she’s a great concert artist as well. By artist we don’t mean a gifted vocalist. The era of the pop concert as a singing showcase and a straightforward live onstage performance of recorded music ended in 1990 with Madonna’s third concert tour. Called Blond Ambition, the highly theatrical show combined music, spectacle and, most crucially, storytelling with a several-act structure based on themes or narrative arcs, deconstructed songs and elaborate sets to redefine the pop concert as performance art. It has since been the template and gold standard by which all concerts, especially those by female superstars, have been measured. Yes, even Madonna’s own subsequent tours have been assessed through the Ambition lens and, arguably, none of them has quite equaled the one that gave the world the cone bra as an icon of female sexuality and woman power. [caption id="attachment_201371" align="aligncenter" width="1987"] LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 11: Taylor Swift attends "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" Concert Movie World Premiere at AMC The Grove 14 on October 11, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. Most of it is courtesy of the massive stage consisting of a backdrop that stands several stories high, a huge main platform and a long runway that juts well into the audience floor and features its own diamond-shaped mini-stage with a “hyperactive” central hydraulic platform consisting of several mobile blocks that rise to various heights throughout the almost three-hour show. It’s not only one of the biggest stages ever built for a pop concert, but is also probably the biggest LED installation ever assembled in and outside the music world. And it’s never not in use, lighting up the cavernous 70,000-seat SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles (where the movie was filmed over three shows) with eye-popping digital images, pre-recorded videos and live footage from the concert itself. The set is so massive that it makes Swift and her troupe of dancers look like ants. But thanks to the big screens, she literally looks larger than life to the live audience at different points in the show. The film does the opposite, and is the better for it: It brings Swift into the intimate space of the cinema and, thus, closer to the audience. Eras further highlights and celebrates the main thing that has helped the 33-year-old singer-songwriter conquer the pop world, the core attribute that makes Taylor Swift Taylor Swift: relatability. [gallery columns="2" size="full" ids="201372,201370"] It’s all over her music: a repertoire of mostly slow and mid-tempo ballads that tell about the blush, excitement, joy, ecstasy, frustrations, confusion, sadness, heartbreak, anger and regrets of modern-day romantic relationships, in creative confessional journal prose that listeners of all ages, colors and persuasions find no difficulty accessing and plugging into. It’s all over her wholesome, winsome, non-threatening all-American girl-next-door public persona. This is on fuller display in her performance in Eras than even in her 2020 documentary movie, Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince, which chronicled mostly the period between her Reputation Tour in 2018 and the release in 2019 of her seventh studio album, Lover. Between the many floral, even pastoral, and fluid graphic images onscreen and the tasteful, immaculate set pieces, between the squarely schematic album-era sectioning and the billowy ball gowns and sparkly and sexy but modest bodysuits, between the Cheshire-Cat grin Swift wears through most of the show, even during moments in some heartbreak songs, and her dorky cheerleader energy, The Eras Tour plays like Little Miss Sunshine & The Hearty Princess. It’s all what anyone would expect from the reigning America’s Sweetheart. Thoroughly entertaining It’s a great Taylor Swift show, for sure — thoroughly entertaining and one that sends stans to Swift heaven. But it stops at being a Taylor Swift show with a faithful rendition of her songs when, for something called Eras, it should be giving audiences, both fans and casuals alike, more to chew on than what they already know and are familiar with — a recast, a reinterpretation, a recontextualization of her music and impact. [caption id="attachment_201373" align="aligncenter" width="2560"] US singer-songwriter Taylor Swift performs onstage on the first night of her "Eras Tour" at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on March 31, 2023. (Photo by SUZANNE CORDEIRO / AFP)[/caption] The show is content to be a pop concert about Taylor Swift. Coming almost 20 years into her career, it should’ve reached for the world outside of Taylor Swift, or even just a small part of it: What do Taylor and her songs, for instance, say about the times we are living in? The Eras Tour could have aspired to life and art, or at least something approaching it, and thereby become a truly era-defining experience. Photo exhibit shows scenes from the field by Howie Severino, Atom Araullo
I-Witness documentarists Howie Severino and Atom Araullo will share a selection of what they’ve seen in many years of coverage in a series of photo exhibits in SM malls. The first leg opened on 21 August at SM Santa Rosa in Laguna. The exhibits are being produced in partnership between I-Witness and SM Malls. Titled Unmasked, the exhibits mainly feature photos shot while Araullo and Severino were producing I-Witness stories as varied as a non-violent way to conduct the drug war and the plight of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. They’ve journeyed to numerous far-flung places, including an island that lost all its land, and documented desperate people whose stories ached to be told. [caption id="attachment_177127" align="aligncenter" width="764"] Howie Severino[/caption] In one episode, the documentarist became the story, as Severino was among the country’s first Covid-19 survivors. His documentary, Ako si Patient 2828, was one of the most watched Philippine documentaries on YouTube in recent memory, and won Best Documentary in the Gawad Tanglaw Awards in 2020. Just before he got sick, Severino was an evacuee from the Taal Volcano eruption of 2020. He lives on the shores of Taal Lake. That experience too is featured in the exhibit. Unmasked remembers a world just before the pandemic shut it down and celebrates a return to interactions where faces are visible once again. Atom will share photographs taken during his travels and documentary-making in the Philippines and abroad. Some of these include his trip to Bangladesh for his first documentary for I-Witness, Silang Kinalimutan. The documentary showed the story of Rohingya refugees who fled to neighboring Bangladesh after the Myanmar government denied them citizenship. It won a gold medal at the 2018 US International Film and Video Festival for Documentary’s Social Issues category. “This exhibit is a chance for us to share our work in the real world, away from screens, and interact with real people and not just names online,” said Severino. Five ways Metro Manila can be made a better city
Metro Manila is forecast to become a global power city, but that development is challenged by rapid urbanization. The UN Habitat sees climate change, inequality, poverty and other social problems arising from poorly managed cities. Is there a way out of Metro Manila’s problems? Architect and urban designer Chintan Raveshia and urban planner and sustainability consultant Tony Chan of Singapore-based Arup stress that urban development should also consider people’s aspirations, their changing needs and expectations, and the collective identity of the residents. Raveshia says stakeholders should first ask themselves the most fundamental question: “What’s the identity of the city and how do we make its residents proud?” As an example, “Singapore, a city high on everyone’s liveability list, is also working with citizens and grassroots organizations to inculcate a sense of ‘lovability’ for the city. This helps to strengthen societal bonds, increase equity, improve community safety, and exude pride and a feeling of ownership of the city among the residents.” Chan believes that successful sustainable urban development goes hand in hand with the capability to enhance people’s quality of life. “We must develop and harness models of development that have low-carbon targets, that are also just, secure and enhances the quality of life for all residents.” If Singapore reclaims lands for more affordable housing and Melbourne builds accessible green spaces to promote social interaction, for instance, what plans would likewise best fit Metro Manila’s sustainable and livable future while maintaining its identity? Here are five ways the country’s main political and economic hub can be made much better for its residents. Greater accessibility for all. While Metro Manila is the Philippines’ major economic driver, accounting for 32 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, it’s often challenged in sustaining accessible living conditions for residents across all social classes. The UK-based The Economist Intelligence Unit ranked Metro Manila 105th out of 139 cities in the Global Liveability Index 2022. The increasing population density in Metro Manila has resulted in traffic gridlock, scarce open spaces, high carbon footprint, unaffordable housing and unequal income opportunities. Urban planners and developers suggest mixed-use planning in the metropolis and coastal developments where residents across all walks of life are can live healthy, affordable and sustainable lifestyles, with residential, commercial and office spaces integrated within a single development. Green open spaces. Despite land scarcity, Singapore manages to be one of the greenest cities in the world with over 400 parks, more than 3,300 hectares of nature reserve and over 300 kilometers of park connector network. Studies shows that Metro Manila has only 5 square meters of green space available per person, a number well below the 9 square meters set by the World Health Organization.COVID-19 had the entire world reassess their health conditions, lifestyle practices and environmental situations. The impact was even more drastic in Metro Manila due to population density, crowded spaces and insufficient parks and open areas. Aside from improving air quality and enhancing biodiversity, green spaces also moderate temperatures during the warm season. Enhanced human health and wellbeing. Cities with sufficient healthcare facilities, access to health coverage and infrastructure that enhance well-being and promote a healthy lifestyle produce prosperous societies. The way cities are planned, designed and executed has a crucial impact on how people live. While there is evident progress in Metro Manila’s health sector, rapid urbanization continues to pose risks in communities due to overcrowded neighborhoods, vehicular emissions, heavy traffic, pollution and flood-prone areas. Resilient communities. Resilience is the capacity of individuals, communities and systems to adapt, survive and grow in the face of stress and shocks, and even transform when conditions require it. The Philippines is among the top 10 countries in the world most affected by climate change in the past 20 years, according to the Global Climate Risk Index. Well-planned and executed urban designs have the power to build safe and resilient communities against that danger. Infrastructure like proper bike lanes and walkable streets ensure residents’ safety, accessibility and comfort, while science and technology-based solutions can build flexible structures, multi-use systems and technologies that can help residents adapt and prepare for changing conditions. [caption id="attachment_122966" align="aligncenter" width="908"] Melbourne is considered one of the most liveable cities in the planet.[/caption] Competitive city. In 2022, Singapore placed 3rd in the World Competitiveness Ranking. This small country in Asia even placed first in 2019 and 2020. Metro Manila is one of Asia’s premier regions. As the country’s engine growth driver, it can further step up by following global models like Singapore, Melbourne and Hong Kong, which created integrated cities and coastal developments that ushered in a vibrant economy and better urban lifestyles. A similar endeavor for Metro Manila can increase opportunities for jobs, education, tourism, infrastructure and the overall economy. When all stakeholders are listened to and addressed, communities are energized, especially when their participation is harnessed for well-designed and master-planned and -implemented developments. This assures more inclusive growth for residents, making the urban landscape an extension of their home. When a city embraces its history, celebrates its milestones, innovates and adopts for the future and, most importantly, nurtures its residents and responds to their aspirations, it is a city working toward competitiveness and unlocking future potential. Change starts in households
PhilUSA Corp. has established itself as the partner of every Filipino home with several iconic household brands, including Rhea, Mediplast, Apollo, Cleene, Babyflo, Albatross, and Gleam, among others. As the 100-percent Filipino-owned company celebrates its 65th year, PhilUSA looks to carve new meaning in its positioning as “Katuwang ng Bawat Tahanang Pilipino.” PhilUSA releases on social media a two-part video series, highlighting the company’s partnerships with like-minded organizations that advocate for clean water access and the reduction of ocean-bound plastic waste. “Layunin ng PhilUSA na itaas ang kaalaman sa sustainable sanitation at proper hygiene practices, pati na rin sa tamang pangangalaga ng ating kalikasan,” says Neogin Evangelista, PhilUSA Corp. president and general manager. “We want to empower and encourage Filipino households in bringing about positive change and making the world a safer and cleaner home for all of us.” “Katuwang sa Kalinisan” follows PhilUSA’s efforts in promoting basic access to clean water, in partnership with Manila Water Foundation. Data reveal that 50.3 million Filipinos still do not have access to water sanitation facilities and services as of 2020. To address this pressing issue, MWF has launched “WASH: Water Access, Sanitation, and Hygiene,” a program that promotes health and sanitation in marginalized communities. PhilUSA joins MWF in its mission to improve access to clean and potable water, as well as the promotion of proper hygiene practices in communities. “Katuwang sa Kalikasan” narrates the efforts of PhilUSA in helping save the environment. According to studies, the Philippines ranks as the 3rd largest contributor of marine plastic waste. In its bid to reduce ocean-bound plastic waste, PhilUSA joined hands with the Canada-based social enterprise Plastic Bank. The organization is committed to getting rid of ocean plastic while helping improve the lives of plastic collectors. In just a year, PhilUSA and Plastic Bank collected 2.5 million plastic bottles, preventing them from entering the ocean. The post Change starts in households appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
