Proposal on shared lanes for bikes, motorcycles to be shelved
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) yesterday floated the idea of shelving its proposal to have a shared lane for bicycles and motorcycles along EDSA. This came after a meeting between motorcycle riders and cyclists' groups failed to reach a consensus, prompting the MMDA to study other possible options. MMDA chair Romando Artes said nobody agreed with the proposal thus they have to study other available options. Artes said a lot of motorcycles enter exclusive bike lanes and if the agency becomes strict on them, they get criticized. The possible alternative MMDA plans to pursue is the prospect of an elevated walkway or bike lane, which also aims to ease traffic congestion on EDSA. Artes said some 160,000 motorcycles ply EDSA daily, with a significant number of them using bike lanes. Some 1,500 erring motorists were recently apprehended by the MMDA on bike lanes. Skating out of stress, to feel free
Since the first patent for a roller skate was awarded in 1819 to a certain M. Petibled of Paris, roller skating has gone through a lot of development before evolving into what we know it now as a recreational and competitive sport. While sports such as speed skating, hockey and figure skating have been institutionalized, recreational roller skating has had its time in the spotlight over the years. Then Covid-19 happened in early 2020, and roller skating became popular again as a solo activity. Its resurgence continues post-pandemic for fitness and just for fun. [caption id="attachment_175690" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Skating is good for fitness. | Photographs Courtesy of Chai Timbungco[/caption] Skating to destress Sesilya Rosario Timbungco, nicknamed Chai, started skating using inline skates (meaning the wheels are in a straight line) with her older cousins when she was around seven years old. Then she studied figure skating for two years, starting at age nine, before moving on to other things. In 2020, she picked up inlines again because “ironically, it was safer to be out on the streets because there were almost zero cars” at the height of community lockdowns and social restrictions. “What I like about skating is that it makes me feel good about myself,” she tells DAILY TRIBUNE in an online interview. “It’s also an outlet for me because it allows me to physically destress. From a technical standpoint, I like skating because of the diverse disciplines under its umbrella -- ice skating, dance skating, derby, quad hockey, speed, park, vert, etc.” The 31-year-old skater, who works as an insights community manager at a software company adds, “Skating is good for fitness because it involves the coordination of your entire body, even if it doesn’t seem like it. It’s all about balance, especially when learning your edges! Once you nail the basics, you pretty much won’t forget how to do it — just like riding a bike.” “It’s a good fitness option, but like with all other sports, make sure it is safe for you,” she points out. “Generally, skating is for everyone. But if you have balance issues, are pregnant or have bad hip mobility, it’s best to consult your doctor.” Chai makes it clear that skating is a sport, even if you do it recreationally or as a hobby. “So there will be maintenance expenses,” she says. “If you don’t get any upgrades and sticks with a decent pair, maintenance won’t be that expensive. A good entry-level pair costs around P5,000 to P8,000. There are many other factors to consider, but that’s the base price for entry-level skates.” These days, she usually skates at the basketball court at their home, though she really misses skating outdoors. She considers Bonifacio Global City as one of the friendlier spaces for skating. If she has to go to the rink, she says she only goes to Rolyo Sk8house at the Circuit Makati. Chai is also a co-founder of the Everywhere We Skate PH community on Facebook, whose goal is to “help raise awareness about local roller skating and make skating accessible in all ways, little ways, that we can,” while “bringing in roller skating brands into the local scene.” Chai’s tips in buying your first pair of skates: Measure your feet. Measure in inches and in centimeters. Never ever correlate shoe size with skate size. Skates have to be snug, but not tight. If you’re in between sizes, always choose the bigger size. There will be workarounds to a slightly loose boot, but it’s impossible for you to use skates that are too small Buy good brands, even if it means buying them second hand. That doesn’t mean branded is always good, nope. Make sure you research before buying anything! There are reputable brands that make nice skates that are good enough as second-hands. If that isn’t an option, make sure you buy skates that are within your current skill level. For example, buying an advanced boot is not the best for a beginner who doesn’t have proper foundation yet. Try them out at the rink first (if you can) before deciding on a big purchase like our own skates. Make sure you learn how to read wheel hardness (it’s not hard), as well as the other components of your skates. Other than looking up what to buy, also learn about maintenance and how to make normal adjustments to your skate. When skating for the first time, Chai recommends doing these steps: Bend your knees. “I can’t stress this enough, but bend your knees,” she says emphatically. “It’ll save you from potential nasty falls!” Wear gear. Avoid slopes. “It’s a common misconception that slopes are good for beginners because they’ll help you roll faster. That’s true, but that’s why it’s dangerous for someone who doesn’t know how to stop yet.” Feeling of freedom Roller skating was likewise a childhood hobby for Raqs Regalado, a 39-year-old event manager and costume designer. “But it was during the pandemic that I fell back into it,” she says in another online interview, “Because I found my old pair of skates (that I got at a Japanese thrift shop back in college) while we were trying to Marie Kondo our place during the first few weeks of the lockdown.” Post-pandemic, Raqs can usually be found skating at the Bike Playground or at other indoor rinks around the Metro, and for outdoor skating, at BGC. “What I like about it most is the feeling of freedom it gives me and the friends I’ve made in this hobby,” she points out. “It’s good for fitness because it activates muscles you never even knew existed. Like it’s a whole different muscle group working when you skate.” “There are cheap, generic ones but cheap skates also mean cheaper materials were used,” she adds. “Skates manufactured by bigger, skate-focused brands will always be more expensive than the generic ones, but I think of it as investing on the quality of skates you’re getting. Your safety depends on it.” Raqs truly believes that everybody can skate. “But I wouldn’t force it on someone who does not want to. You have to at least be interested to try it and eventually find happiness in it. Once you find joy in skating, that’s when you start wanting to learn more.” She has found her kindred spirits on Everywhere We Skate PH when it was founded in 2020: “Chai reached out to me and told me about the online skating community they’ve build. Of course, I instantly joined. There were only about 50 members that time. A few months in, and they asked me to be one of the group admins. Now, we have over 10,000 members. We welcome skaters of all levels and skate enthusiasts. Our main goal is to have a safe space for healthy exchanges of skate-related information.” Raqs’ tips in buying your first pair of skates: Assuming that you’ve already tried rental skates at the public rink, and you really liked it and want to get into skating, then start doing your research on the particular skates that have aesthetically caught your attention. Check for materials used, reviews and after-sales services. If you can also determine what type of skating you want to immerse yourself in (such as outdoor cruising, aggressive skating, artistic skating, etc.), that would also be very helpful in choosing your first pair of skates. If you’re skating for the first time, Raqs has these suggestions for you to do: Get safety gear. Watch video tutorials on how to fall safely because knowing how to do so can save you from serious injuries. Remember: You may fall a lot specially as a beginner, but don’t worry, it happens to all of us. The post Skating out of stress, to feel free appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Four dead after latest New York e-bike fire
Four people have died after lithium batteries for e-bikes sparked a fire in a New York building, officials said Tuesday, sounding the alarm over the skyrocketing number of such incidents. The fire broke out overnight in a maintenance shop for electric bicycles and scooters, on the ground floor of a building in Chinatown. A large pile of blackened two-wheelers was seen strewn outside the charred facility on Tuesday, in a photo posted by New York Fire Department on their official Twitter account. During a press briefing at the scene, the city's fire commissioner, Laura Kavanagh, said four people had died and two were seriously injured. "It is very clear that this was caused by lithium ion batteries and e-bikes," she said, adding that the store had previously been cited for safety violations. It is the 108th such fire so far this year in New York, with a total toll of 66 injured and 13 dead, including Tuesday's victims, according to the fire department. In April, a 19-year-old woman and her seven-year-old brother were killed in a similar fire in the borough of Queens. Fires related to e-bikes and scooters in New York have grown exponentially in recent years, from 44 in 2020 to 220 last year, as residents buy more of the electric devices -- especially for the city's highly popular meal delivery services. Batteries are more likely to combust if they are of poor quality or older age, or if they are packed together during charging. When they ignite, "there is so much fire created that it can often be too late as soon as the fire has begun," Kavanaugh said. After the success of its first Tour de McDo, McDonald’s Philippines hosts its second community bike ride in celebration of World Bicycle Day. The latest ride brought together several cycling communities and personalities simultaneously in three key areas across the country — Pampanga, Intramuros and Tagaytay. Tour de McDo is a multiple-stage bike challenge introduced under McDonald’s Green and Good campaign — the QSR giant’s initiative to do better for the environment by implementing sustainable and alternative solutions in their restaurants and operations. Through Tour de McDo, McDonald’s encourages its customers to explore a healthier lifestyle for themselves and the environment, while also highlighting various scenic cycling routes passing through McDonald’s stores equipped with bike-friendly features. Aside from its sustainable restaurant innovations, the strategic location of the store makes it an ideal stop for the strong cycling community in Nuvali. Three new scenic routes The sophomore ride now features three new scenic routes to cater to the different levels of cycling: Intramuros, Manila for the beginner route (20km); Clark, Pampanga for the intermediate route (34km); and Tagaytay for the advanced route (48km). Almost 100 participants joined the event and received Tour de McDo kits, which include an exclusive Tour de McDo Dri Fit shirt, Tour de McDo limited-edition stickers, and a McDonald’s breakfast meal, all for free. “For a long time, our McDonald’s stores have played an integral role in many bike rides as a stopover or pit stop. 10 Metro Manila officials in study tour of bike-friendly Netherlands
Filipino bicycle community, rejoice: Metro Manila mayors are taking you seriously. At least enough to fly to the Netherlands to study how the nation became the most bicycle-friendly country. Top city officials represented the Metro Manila Development Authority in a study tour of the European nation that has integrated the use of bicycles into its daily life as well as in its culture. Since the 1920s, the Netherlands developed the bicycle culture and the bike has become “the patriotic means of transportation.” There, traffic rules take cyclists into consideration that they don’t have to wear helmets. Infrastructure is also planned out with bicycles in mind. The Metro Manila city officials also sought to learn things about water management, flood control, inclusive and sustainable mobility, and circular economy. The official delegation includes Mayor Joy Belmonte of Quezon City, Mayor Ruffy Biazon of Muntinlupa, and other officials from San Juan, Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Pasay City, Valenzuela, Mandaluyong, and Pateros The officials visited two modern bicycle parking facilities built under canals and rivers in Amsterdam. One is the Stationsplein Underwater Bike Parking Facility which opened on 26 January. It is the largest bicycle parking facility in the city. It can store almost 7,000 bicycles. Taking four years to build at a cost of 65 million euros or approximately P3.67 billion, the bike garage was constructed under the river in front of the Amsterdam Central Train Station. The city officials also visited another underwater parking that can accommodate 4,000 bikes along IJ Boulevard in Amsterdam. Biazon cited the design which allows easy parking and promotes cycling as “last-mile transportation” for train commuters. Belmonte said there are a lot of pointers she can apply for Quezon City which has the largest bicycle road network in the country with 93 kilometers of bike lanes. Quezon City has also installed bike ramps on 40 footbridges and underpasses, milestones already for the local bike community but still a long way to go compared to that of the Netherlands. Based on Dutch Cycling Embassy data, roughly 63 percent of Amsterdam citizens ride a bike daily on 767 km of cycle paths and bicycle lanes throughout the city. The Netherlands has more bicycles than people, with over 22 million bicycles for its 18 million residents. Bicycles saw a massive popularity rise during the pandemic, causing improvements in the infrastructure, especially along Edsa, Macapagal Ave., C5 and Ayala Ave. In 2021, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Works and Highways completed 313.12 kilometers of bike lanes passing through 12 cities in Metro Manila. In total, the country now has 497 km of bike lane network that can handle 1,250 cyclists per hour per meter of bike lane. According to the DPWH, there is a plan to build 1,778 km more bike lane projects across the entire country. Bike riders press safer roads for all
One death too many. About 88 cyclists held Saturday a “mass mobility ride” to honor hero traffic enforcer Jeffrey Antolin who died last month in a freak road accident while saving a pedestrian. Calling themselves Mobility Advocates for People-Centered Streets, the bikers rode from the Philippine Science High School at Agham Road to the Ayala Cloverleaf. Antolin died last 23 March when he got run over by a truck along A. Bonifacio Avenue in Quezon City after pushing a pedestrian away from the path of the vehicle. Citing statistics that bicycle owners in the country outnumber car owners by 4 to 1, the group expressed surprise that the government has not updated “car-centric infrastructures and regulations.” They pushed accommodating along roads both pedestrians and non-motorized road users like bikers and scooter riders. Alternative mobility through the use of bikes and scooters is an environmentally sustainable means of transportation if road safety for all users can be assured, they added. The mass ride, they said, is not just to honor Antolin but to press the need for all people to share the road, stop reckless driving and for authorities to implement road regulations. “Recklessness while driving should not be tolerated, and road use and safety policies should be reviewed and properly implemented,” they said in a statement. The cyclists belonged to the Make It Safer Movement, or MISMO, QCklista and PARA, short for Advocates for Inclusive Transport and Road Safety Awareness Campaign. Antolin, 35, was directing traffic flow when a pedestrian did not heed his hand signal not to cross. Seeing that the truck would hit the pedestrian, Antolin pushed the pedestrian out of harm’s way, but he was in turn hit by the truck. The traffic enforcer was pulled from under the truck and was rushed to the MCU Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. The truck driver, Joel Dimacali of Tondo, Manila was arrested and charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. E-bikes For Food Delivery To Further Reduce Carbon Footprint
Quick-Service Restaurant KFC has moved to further reduce the company’s carbon footprint with the rollout of its pioneering e-bike (electric bike) fleet for food delivery in Metro Manila and nearby provinces. Several units of the eco-friendly e-bikes have been deployed last year, with 72 more set to be dispatched to service KFC stores in Metro Manila and its peripheries. “This is a trailblazing initiative for KFC and reflects our continuing pursuit for more ways to contribute to the global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and address climate change,” KFC Philippines Chief Operations Officer Jojo Marcelo shared. Electric vehicles have three times less carbon footprint than conventional vehicles in their entire lifecycle, or from production to distribution, use, and disposal, studies have shown. They do not produce direct emissions, thus, helping improve air quality in urban settings. KFC’s e-bikes, supplied by one of the world’s top makers of electric vehicles, also do not contribute to noise pollution like the ordinary motorcycles being used in food delivery today. “The e-bike fleet is part of KFC’s response to the clamor for the private sector to escalate the green movement, which gives primary consideration to the environment in all aspects of the business, from production to consumption. It is also our way of addressing the growing need for sustainable food delivery service in this New Normal when mobility is restricted and people are staying indoors even while working or studying,” Marcelo added. KFC’s e-bikes are also lighter and easier to navigate than conventional motorcycles, without compromising efficiency and on-time delivery of “finger lickin’ good chicken and gravy, well-loved fixins, tasty new pasta, and rice bowl creations”. KFC now prides itself as the first quick-service restaurant in the country to utilize e-bikes for eco-friendly delivery, which can be accessed via its website www.kfc.com.ph, the KFC Philippines mobile app, and delivery service number 02-888-7-8888. It currently has over 300 branches nationwide. KFC also recently opened the business for sub-franchising, allowing entrepreneurs throughout the country to join the fast-growing QSR chain......»»
