November road games vs. Korea, Thailand loom over Gilas Pilipinas

Unless FIBA actually makes an official announcement, the November games of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers should be treated as if they're actually going to take place. As it stands, Gilas Pilipinas is set for a pair of road games against Thailand and South Korea in about four months time. However, the Gilas program has been pretty much stopped since a 100-70 road win against Indonesia back in February. "May FIBA qualifier pa kasi dapat sa November, wala pa sinasabing cancellation. If you look at the schedule, nandoon pa. We're supposed to be playing," SBP director of operations Butch Antonio said during the recent Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum. "We have to keep that in mind. We have to make sure that it's in our awareness na meron dapat tayong paghandaan," he added. Aside from the possibility of playing in November, Gilas still has to address its lack of an actual head coach. TNT's Mark Dickel handled the team on an interim basis during in the Indonesia game back in February but upon arriving from Jakarta, there have been no updates from the national team, let alone practices, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "We will still have to set a meeting with Coach Tab to see how we can progress from here," Antonio said on the Gilas coaching search. "Wala right now. Kailangan pa pag-usapan ng SBP management yun," he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
