Family, folklore define pioneering hotel design
With craft, community and a deeply held intrinsic value for the cultural mores and history of the island, South Palms Resort Panglao Bohol–MGallery is shaping up to be anything but a cookie-cutter hotel. Six world-class innovation and sustainability leaders in architecture, interior design and green development have gathered to create a hotel like no other — weaving the folklore of the destination into the fabric of the project and into the hearts of the community of artisans proudly crafting a living history for guests when the hotel opens as part of the Panglao Shores masterplan in fourth quarter of 2024. Take Patrick Keane, founder of Enter Projects, an artist and master of “native material” design who is working with Boholano craftsmen to create spaces of celebration: “Here is a community deeply entrenched in generations of arts and crafts. We are using local materials such as recycled woods, weaving basketry and weaving fabrics, plus traditional techniques passed down through generations and incorporating performance-based materials, such as solar and sustainably engineered materials. Hazel Wu of White Jacket has been at the forefront of the reuse of materials from former ancestral homes to ensure materials are utilized and cherished. “A piece of Bohol will be featured in every room, including wooden walls that previously formed part of village dwellings and natural materials that tell the story of local artists and artisans. This is a tale of culture and folk tales. Stories that will be told throughout the hotel,” said Wu. A mother from Cainta, Rizal is selling mugs and t-shirts to earn extra money for the therapy of her child with autism. Jessica Halago, a resident of Vista Verde Executive Village in Barangay San Isidro, however, said that the venture was not just for the therapy of her five-year-old son, but also to raise public awareness for autism. Mrs. Halago said she was inspired to make “Au-some” have mugs so people can understand the feelings of parents of children with autism. “The money I earn from this will supplement my son’s therapy,” Mrs. Halago told this reporter. “I also want other people to understand the hardships of parents who have a child with autism.” “I want them to be aware of what we feel and what the children with special needs feel,” she added, recalling her son was diagnosed with the condition when he was two years old. She said other parents fully support her autism awareness drive. “Actually, before I started it, I asked them first if it was okay to launch an awareness campaign like this,” she said. Mrs. Halago, however, stressed that more than just awareness, it is also important for autistic children to feel accepted. “There are parents who are still in denial. So, I conducted a survey at the therapy center if it was okay to do this for other people’s awareness as well,” she said. “It’s so hard, we need to be brave. Sometimes we cry if someone says our child isn’t talking yet. It really hurts,” she said. She also thanked the local government of Cainta, Rizal for having a program for children with special needs. Despite talk of growing superhero fatigue among moviegoers, Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" opened to a solid $114 million in ticket sales in North American theaters, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday. The "Guardians" finally unseated Universal's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" from the top spot in its fifth week out. The video game-based film, which has earned more than a billion dollars globally, took in $18.6 million for the Friday-through-Sunday period. Warner Bros.' blood-soaked horror film "Evil Dead Rise" dropped one spot to third, taking in $5.7 million. It has two sisters (Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland) battling the demonic Deadites crew. In fourth place, also down one spot, was Lionsgate comedy-drama "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret," at $3.4 million. Abby Ryder Fortson plays sixth-grader Margaret Simon as she navigates the challenges of that awkward age. And in the fifth spot was the new Sony rom-com "Love Again," at $2.4 million. Elreen Ando targets SEAG gold
Settling for silver medal the last time in Hanoi, Elreen Ando feels she will get the gold when she competes in next months’ 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh. Saying she already feels comfortable in the 59-kilogram event, Ando swears she has “adjusted” and “adapted in her new weight class after her stint in the 64-kg division in Vietnam. With Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz skipping this year’s SEA Games for the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships that will run from May 3 to 13 in South Korea, Ando will banner the nine-man team to Cambodia. “I hope I can get the gold medal this time in Cambodia and improve my lifts. It was a big help for me playing in the Olympics because I saw things that I didn’t back then. After the Olympics, I became more inspired to play and I hope I can play there again.” Also joining Ando in Phnom Penh are SEA Games gold medalist Vanessa Sarno (women's 71kg), Kristel Macrohon (women's +71kg), Angeline Colonia (women's 45kg), Lovely Inan (women's 49kg), Rosalinda Faustino (women's 55kg), John Febuar Ceniza (men's 61kg), Dave Lloyd Pacaldo (men's 67kg) and John Dexter Tabique (men's 89kg). Fantagio issues official statement on Moon Bin’s death
South Korean entertainment company Fantagio released today, 20 April, an official statement regarding Moon Bin's death. "Although we cannot compare our sorrow to the grief that the bereaved families are feeling, losing a beloved son and brother, the ASTRO members, fellow Fantagio artists, company executives, and employees are mourning the deceased in great sadness and shock," the statement read in Korean. "It is even more heartbreaking to deliver this news so suddenly to the fans who have supported Moonbin and sent him their love. We are heartbroken because we know the feelings of the deceased, who always loved and thought of his fans more than anyone else," it added. Fantagio also asked the public to "refrain from speculative and malicious reports" so that the bereaved families can honor the deceased. Moon Bin, a member of the boy band ASTRO, died on Wednesday at age 25. The cause of death is currently unknown.
