FPRRD opposes disguised Charter change initiative
Former President Rodrigo R. Duterte has vehemently opposed the disguised People’s Initiative for Charter change, denouncing the cash-for-signature campaign as repugnant and a disgraceful act during a YouTube interview with Banateros Brothers on January 22, 2024. Duterte emphasized his disapproval of the initiative, urging for it to be halted, particularly criticizing the payment of individuals to sign the documents. He warned that such actions could lead to a new Constitution that might destroy the nation and open avenues for political abuses. Duterte stressed the importance of democracy in the Philippines, asserting that those seeking to remain in power should go through the electoral process. He highlighted that a well-performing and non-corrupt individual would retain power, while those with poor performance would be ousted through the electoral process. Expressing satisfaction with the current Constitution, Duterte argued that it has contributed to stability, reducing conflicts with groups like the New People's Army (NPA). He strongly advised against meddling with the Constitution, cautioning that it would only bring trouble to the country. Duterte pledged active opposition to the initiative, stating that he would campaign against it. Additionally, residents of Calinan District, Vice President Sara Duterte, and Representatives Isidro Ungab and Paolo Pulong Duterte have also voiced opposition to the People's Initiative for Charter Change. Margarita Atty. Migs Nograles, the representative of the Pwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) Partylist, alleged to have started the cha-cha signature campaign, has yet to issue an official statement on the matter as of the latest update. Related stories include the denouncement of alleged `vote buying’ in signing the petition for Cha-cha by Davao City lawmakers, Vice President Duterte's condemnation of the cash-for-signature drive, and a prayer rally against PI’s Cha-cha on Jan 28......»»
Calinan District residents protest vs disguised Cha-cha
Residents from the 19 barangays in Calinan District rallied against the disguised People's Initiative for Charter Change in a protest held on January 19, 2024. Organized by the barangay captains, around 100 individuals from each barangay gathered at Rizal Park, chanting Dabawenyos are not for sale and expressing their disapproval of the alleged cash-for-signature scheme. The protest emphasized the residents' desire for fairness and a better government approach, rejecting the notion of exchanging signatures for money. Participants, including both young and old residents, voiced their opposition to the charter change, with the youth expressing concerns about power-hungry officials. Even 75-year-old Rosminda Amarilla joined the protest to question the need for change after numerous presidents have governed without such alterations. The rally, which included a motorcade and drew approximately 300 participants, received disapproval from Congressman Paolo Pulong Z. Duterte and Congressman Isidro Ungab, who alleged that the signature campaign was orchestrated by leaders of the Pwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) Partylist. As of the latest update, PBA Representative Margarita Atty. Migs Nograles has yet to release a statement on the matter......»»

SMNI suspension urged for alleged violations
Davao City-based legislator and Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) Partylist Representative Margarita “Migs” Ignacia B. Nograles has proposed a resolution urging the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to suspend the operations of Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI). The resolution alleges that SMNI has violated the terms of its franchise and disseminated false information, failing in its responsibility to the public. This move is in response to multiple complaints filed against SMNI, including accusations of fake news peddling and baseless red-tagging of individuals, groups, and organizations. Specific incidents cited in the resolution include attacks on ACT Teachers Partylist Representative France L. Castro and false claims about House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez's foreign travel expenses. SMNI's host, Jeffrey “Ka Eric” Celiz, admitted to providing inaccurate information on air, further fueling the allegations against the network. Pending the Committee on Legislative Franchises' recommendations on SMNI's alleged violations, Nograles emphasized the urgency for the NTC to halt the deliberate dissemination of false information that may erode public trust. The 25-year franchise of SMNI was renewed in 2019, and the network has not yet issued an official statement regarding the resolution. In a related development, the House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Franchises cited Celiz and former National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-Elcac) spokesperson Lorraine Badoy-Partosa in contempt for refusing to disclose their source of erroneous information and being evasive about their income from co-producing their show. Both anchors will be detained at the House premises until the committee's report is adopted in the plenary. This story highlights the growing scrutiny on SMNI's operations and the calls for accountability amid allegations of spreading false information......»»

‘Be BIDA ambassadors’: Abalos told Asiad medalists
Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos on Friday urged the 33 Filipino medalists at the recent 19th Asian Games in China to serve as ambassadors of the government's flagship anti-illegal drugs advocacy program "Buhay Ingatan, Droga'y Ayawan" (BIDA). The call was made by Abalos to encourage and inspire more Filipino youth to focus on sports and other healthy and productive activities and turn away from the scourge of illegal drugs. Abalos appealed as he joined President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. during the "Gabi ng Parangal at Pasasalamat sa Bayaning Atletang Pilipino" ceremony held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. “Inaanyayahan namin kayo na makibahagi at tumulong sa programang BIDA bilang mga ambassador. Kayo ang magiging boses ng BIDA para himukin ang mga kabataan na maging aktibo sa sports at ayawan ang droga,” he said. Abalos said the 33 Filipino athletes who brought home medals from the recent 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China can serve as positive and effective role models for the Filipino youth, “as they have shown that engaging in sports can both be rewarding and beneficial for one’s health and well-being”. "One of the strategies of the BIDA program is to promote health and wellness activities to encourage people, especially the youth to lead healthy lives. At nakakasigurado ako na malaki ang maitutulong ng ating mga atletang Pilipino sa bagay na ito,” he said. For his part, President Marcos said that the victorious Filipino athletes made the country proud and boosted the morale of the entire nation. “To our hardworking coaches, the leaders of various sports associations, and of course, to our athletes, congratulations. On behalf of a proud and grateful nation, I salute and recognize the excellent performances that you displayed in the 19th Asian Games,” he said after conferring Presidential Citation Awards to the medalists. He also promised to increase the national government’s funding support for the athletes going forward, in pursuit of achieving better results in future international competitions.
