Duterte breaks silence on ‘promised’ BRP Sierra Madre removal: ‘They’re dreaming’
“They’re dreaming,” former president Rodrigo Duterte said as he broke his silence over the claims that the Philippines, during his administration, promised to remove the Philippine Navy’s commissioned vessel BRP Sierra Madre from Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea. In a recent episode of his program 'Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa’ over the SMNI News Channel earlier this week, Duterte bluntly denied giving out “an inch of territory” to China during his term. “I did not discuss anything about territory. For one, what is there on the map is ours. We are not claiming an area over what is really legally ours. So, that Sierra Madre—is claimed by the Philippines as ours (in) that area—so let it just remain there,” he said. Duterte agreed that setting up the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin symbolizes the country’s sovereign rights over the WPS. “Maybe, as a symbolic thing, to put a notice on everybody na atin ‘yan (that it is ours), which is good. Kung ako ang tanungin mo, prangkahan ko lang either kung sino ang nakikinig dyan (If you would ask me, I will tell you frankly, to whoever is listening now)—whether its a foreign country or the government)” he said. “Kung ako magdala ako ng maraming barko sa navy na sira-sira butasan ko 'yan dun. Iwan ko. Ilayo ko pa na parang buffer zone (If I were to ask, I would bring many decommissioned and broken navy ships in there. I will leave them there. I will even scatter them as a buffer zone) so that there can be no issue about. I said I would not give an inch that is owned by my country,” Duterte stressed. Duterte emphasized that defending the country’s territory should be spared from being a good friend to China. “Iba yung mag-kaibigan tayo, iba yung teritoryo ko. Ang liit-liit na nga natin tapos kukunan pa nila. Hindi na maganda yan,” he said. Earlier, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo categorically denied that she made promises to China or any other country. "First, I never made such a promise to China or any other country. Second, I never authorized any government officials to make such a promise. Third, I only became aware of such claims recently, when the matter surfaced in public discussions," she said. China insists that Ayungin Shoal, which it calls Ren’ai Jiao, is part of its territory. But the Philippines maintains its sovereignty over the shoal as affirmed by the 2016 Arbitral ruling. Phl Navy to acquire new ships, weapons worth P58B
The Philippine Navy is slated to acquire two brand new missile corvettes between 2025 and 2026 while two offshore patrol vessels will arrive 2026 to 2028, a navy official bared Wednesday. PN ice commander Rear Adm. Caesar Bernard Valencia said the coming in of new navy vessels in the country is part of the corvette acquisition program of the Department of National Defense with the South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries awarded on 28 December 2021. "Marami po tayong parating na barko. Pagdating po ng 2025 tsaka 2026, we will be receiving two brand-new corvettes. Galing po ito sa South Korea. Bago po ito (We have a lot of naval ships coming in. In 2025 and 2026, we will be receiving two brand-new corvettes from South Korea. These ships are brand new)," Valencia said in a radio interview. The navy official said the brand corvettes are expected to reinforce the two Jose Rizal-class missile frigates that are in service—the BRP Jose Rizal and the BRP Antonio Luna. According to Valencia, these incoming corvettes, designed to be capable of conducting anti-ship, anti-submarine, and anti-air warfare missions, are worth P28 billion. On top of this, is the acquisition of brand-new offshore patrol vessels or OPVs worth P30 billion worth, which was also awarded to HHI on 28 June 2022. "At pagdating po ng 2026-2028, we expect to receive six more brand new OPVs. Ang OPV, ang pinaka main purpose po niya ay magpatrulya sa karagatan (Come 2026-2028, we expect to receive six more brand new OPVs, the main purpose of the OPV is to patrol the seas)," Valencia said. Dela Rosa on China ‘allowing’ resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal: ‘Who are they?’
The Philippines does not need China’s approval to operate within its territorial waters, particularly in the West Philippine Sea, Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa said. In a chance interview with reporters, Dela Rosa questioned China’s recent claims that the successful rotation and resupply mission of the Armed Forces of the Philippines for the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin shoal was allowed only due to the Chinese’s “humanitarian consideration.” “Sino sila? Sino sila para mag-a-approve kung anong dadalhin natin doon para sa ating outpost, para sa ating mga sundalo doon sa outpost? Bakit nila tayo pigilan kung anong gusto nating dalhin? (Who are they? Who are they to approve our operation for our outpost, whatever we want to bring to our soldiers in our outpost? Why should they stop us from what we want to bring there?).” In a television interview, National Task Force for the WPS spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela denied China’s claims that it has extended humanitarian consideration to the Philippines. “That’s not true that they have allowed the path of the supply boasts to enter Ayungin shoal. Even the supply boast that we are using to deliver the supplies was blocked and intercepted by the Chinese Coast Guard vessels. So it’s not true, they are lying when they said that they are extending humanitarian consideration,” Tarriela stressed. Tarriela described the recent RoRe mission as “not a walk in the park” as China again threatened the Philippines with its usual aggressive tactics. CCG ships and other China militia vessels attempted to obstruct the Philippine resupply boats delivering fresh provisions to the military personnel stationed on BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal last 22 August. China vessels also reactivated their water cannons during the RoRe mission. AFP chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said they are now looking into other strategies for the future resupply mission in the area. Meanwhile, Dela Rosa lamented that China’s recent blockage attempts against Philippine vessels serve as an “advancement of their own position.” “Gusto nila talaga na masira iyong barko nating Sierra Madre para ‘pag masira na ‘yan, magiba, wala na tayong matitirahan at sila na ang papalit sa atin, aagawin na nila ‘yan (They really want ship Sierra Madre to be totally destroyed so that they can positioned themselves when we will have no place to live and they will replace us, they will seize it),” he said. On the other hand, Senator Raffy Tulfo recommended to the AFP and the Department of the National Defense to allow the Philippine Coast Guard to conduct a joint military operation involving a resupply mission with the United States Navy to drive away the CCG trying to block the country’s sovereign rights over the WPS. AFP: BRP Sierra Madre to be repaired
The government plans to refurbish and repair the BRP Sierra Madre to become more habitable to the Filipino troops stationed in Ayungin Shoal, Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said Monday. “We have all the right to repair it,” Brawner said in a radio interview. Brawner explained that the commissioned ship has to stay in the shoal and can’t be replaced to secure the country's defense posture over the waters. “Actually po pag ginawa natin 'yun, it will not prevent the other claimants from doing the same. So pwedeng magsadsad rin ng barko yung Tsina dun" (Actually, if we replace that, it will not prevent the other claimants from doing the same, because China may also run aground ships in there), he said. “Hindi na po natin papalitan 'yung barko. Ang pwede lang nating gawin is to maintain 'yung structure nya" (We won't replace the ship. What we can do is to maintain its structure), he added. Brawner said the AFP will resume its rotation and resupply operations in the coming days. The Philippine Navy, he added, will implement maximum tolerance should China's Coast Guard direct water cannons at Philippine vessels again. “Tayo, sumusunod tayo sa rules of engagement and international laws at nakalagay dun na hindi po tayo pwedeng lumaban, so even if wina-water cannon na tayo, meron rin naman po tayong water cannons pero hindi natin gagamitin sa ganong paraan. We only use our water cannons to save lives, kung may sunog ‘yung isang barko, 'yun po ‘yung pangpatay natin ng sunog,” (We follow the rules of engagement and international laws that say we cannot initiate fighting, so even if we are being water-cannoned, we can't use our own water cannons in the same way. We only use our water cannons to save lives -- if there is fire in a ship), the AFP chief said. “Iiwas po tayo, iiwas, iiwas na lang... para hindi tayo magkabangaan” (We will avoid any confrontation), he added. Gibo not aware of Phl ‘promise’ to remove BRP Sierra Madre
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro said the Philippines did not commit to China any “promise” about the removal of the BRP Sierra Madre in the Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea. “Wala akong alam na supposed agreement na yan. Wala akong alam na agreement sa Ayungin na aalisin ang barkoMaglalagay ka ng barko diyan na Philippine vessel. ‘Di mo nga dini-deregister, pagkatapos aalisin mo?,” Teodoro said in a chance interview with reporters during his recent visit in Gamu, Isabela. Teodoro, who held the same post in the Department of National Defense during the term of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, insisted the Philippines did not seal an agreement on the matter. However, Teodoro said the agreement is considered null if it was made in the past. “Si Presidente na ang nagsabi, kung meron mang agreement na hindi namin alam (The President said himself—‘If there is an agreement that we don’t know, that’s rescinded,” he stressed. Enrique Gil makes comeback in ‘sexy comedy’ film
After a three-year hiatus, ABS-CBN star Enrique Gil is making his movie comeback with a sexy comedy. The 31-year-old actor announced on Wednesday through a media launch that he is set to join a comedy film that will air this year under the direction of Victor Villanueva and writers Joma Labayen and Lilit Santos. The movie, titled I Am Not Big Bird, is co-produced by ABS-CBN Films, ANIMA Studios, and Black Sheep Films. Gil’s last movie outing was the hit Alone/Together, co-starring his long-time onscreen partner, Liza Soberano. [caption id="attachment_158091" align="aligncenter" width="953"] AFTER a three-year hiatus, ABS-CBN star Enrique Gil (left most) is making his movie comeback with a sexy comedy.PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY IG/ NIKKO NATIVIDAD[/caption] Riotous comedy In I Am Not Big Bird, he will play the role of Luis Carpio, a Filipino tourist who, as the actor put it, “reconnects with his barkada, goes to Thailand for this crazy adventure and, pagdating doon, kamukha niya si Big Bird”. In the story, Big Bird is a Thai porn actor. Writer Lilit Santos said the film’s story was inspired by a real incident that took place during a foreign trip they had in the 2000s. “Dinudumog kami, ‘di dahil sa amin, sa kasama ko. We found out that my friend looks exactly like a Japanese porn actor,” Santos recalled. So “it’s a nice riotous comedy — male barkada na magtatravel ng barko pero ‘di alam ng bida natin na may kamukha siyang porn actor sa Thailand,” Santos added. Joining Gil in the movie are Pepe Herrera, Nikko Natividad, and Red Ollero. Director Villanueva was behind the 2016 film Patay na si Hesus, which won the Jury’s Choice Award during the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino held that year. ‘Back to zero’ Gil said that, having come from a long hiatus, “parang back to zero na rin ako. It’s going to feel new again.” The new film, he stressed, means he’s open to doing other genres now aside from the rom-com that he had previously starred in. For this venture, Gil also created his own production company to co-produce the film. “I want to leave a legacy somewhat, so I created this production company to focus on creating projects that can break through internationally,” Gil said in an interview. I Am Not Big Bird is expected to be shown this year in the country, with an international screening being eyed early next year.
