Bagunas, former NU teammates reunite in club league
Bryan Bagunas could be looking at a reunion with former National University teammates in the Spikers’ Turf. The 2019 Southeast Asian Games silver medalist, who re-signed with Go for Gold three weeks ago, bared that the although not yet cast in stone, the organization is looking to bring in former Bulldogs to back him up. “Bale magtatayo na ata ng sariling Go for Gold team. Kasama pa rin ang Air Force pero siyempre iilang players na lang meron sa Air Force pero di pa finalized 'yun,” Bagunas told ABS-CBN Sports. “Parang bubuuin ulit kaming NU, parang ganun.” Bagunas last played with Philippine Air Force in the 2019 Reinforced Conference where the Jet Spikers finished runners-up to Cignal. He skipped the season-ending Open Conference to play in the Japan V. League club Oita Miyoshi Weiss Adler. The Balayan, Batangas pride will only suit up for Go for Gold if his schedule permits as he is set to return to Japan for another season with the Weiss Adler. Bagunas’ former National University teammate and national team libero Ricky Marcos welcomes the possibility of playing alongside the UAAP Season 81 Most Valuable Player and other Bulldogs alumni Francis Saura, Kim Malabunga and Fauzi Ismail. “Bakit hindi, di ba? Doon na ako sa matagal ko nang nakakasama po sa loob ng court, sila kuya Bryan,” Marcos said. Marcos played for the Sta. Elena-backed NU in the Open Conference. He was named Best Libero in the same tournament where the Bulldogs finished third. The Spikers’ Turf along with the Premier Volleyball League and Philippine Superliga are awaiting the go-signal from the government to resume activities amid the health crisis. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
Bagunas gushes over men’s progress
Veteran internationalist Bryan Bagunas couldn’t help but get goosebumps at the prospect of seeing more Filipino volleyball players campaigning in club leagues overseas. Four homegrown talents have been invited to the 2023 KOVO men’s Asian Quota Draft tryouts set on 25 April for the coming Korean Volleyball League, hoping to join Bagunas on the list of Filipino spikers showcasing their wares abroad. Bagunas, who is fresh from a successful stint in Taiwan’s Top Volleyball League after leading Lien Zhuang WinStreak to the crown and winning tournament Most Valuable Player in the process, is optimistic about the chances of the likes of Marck Espejo, Jau Umandal, JP Bugaoan and Manuel Sumanguid III getting selected. ‘I’m having goosebumps now.’ The four national team standouts are scheduled to fly to Jeju Island in Korea for the face-to-face tryout where seven slots will be at stake. “I’m having goosebumps now. I’m really proud that slowly the Philippines men’s volleyball is getting recognition from other countries,” Bagunas said in an interview over the weekend. “It’s overwhelming for me to see that other countries are now eyeing Filipinos as imports,” Bagunas, who is currently busy preparing for his wedding in June, added. Just last Friday, Fil-American middle blocker MJ Phillips was picked 5th overall by the Gwangju AI Peppers during the 2023 KOVO Women’s Asian Quota Draft held online. “We really have the skills to compete internationally,” Bagunas, who will return to Taiwan for the next Top League season in October. “Being one of the few Filipinos playing international (volleyball) I’m really proud that we’re getting the recognition we deserve. Hopefully, there will be more of us playing abroad.” The post Bagunas gushes over men’s progress appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Bagunas begins building dream house for parents
Bryan Bagunas is planning something big for his hard-earned money. While his peers are occupied with their business ventures with the resumption of volleyball events still up in the air because of the health crisis, the national team stalwart is busy with his own project. “As of now wala pa akong binabalak na negosyo kasi magpapatayo ako ng bahay ng parents ko,” Bagunas told ABS-CBN Sports. The former UAAP Most Valuable Player saved some of his earnings as an import for Oita Miyoshi Weiss Adler in the Japan V. Premier League to buy a lot and eventually build a house for his parents in Batangas. “Kakabili ko lang ng lot dun then papatatyuan ko naman sila ng bahay. Yun muna ang unahin ko as of now,” said the 2019 Southeast Asian Games silver medalist and two-time UAAP champion. The pride of Balayan, Batangas bought a 430 sq. meter property where he plans to construct his parents’ house. As of now his parents are still planning on the design and size of the house. “Depende pa sa kanila kung anong gusto nilang design. Sila na mamili para naman sa kanila ‘yun. Ireregalo ko sa kanila,” said Bagunas. He added that once the house design is settled, they can then proceed with the construction. “Hindi pa nasisimulan bale pinag-aaralan pa lang ng tatay ko. Kasi ang tatay ko marunong ding gumawa ng bahay,” said Bagunas. Bagunas is set to fly back to Japan in September to resume training with the Weiss Adler. On Wednesday, Bagunas signed with Spikers’ Turf club team Go for Gold. He cleared that the there’s no conflict of schedule with his league commitments here and in Japan. .....»»
Majoy Baron in FIVB website feature article: Enjoying both volleyball and fashion worlds
Filipino volleyball stars continue to make headlines in the FIVB website. Majoy Baron’s humble volleyball journey to her slaying it on the catwalk and her incredible story of striving to be at her best in both worlds is the latest Filipino volleyball feature article on the site. The F2 Logistics middle blocker shared the news on her Instagram post on Sunday. View this post on Instagram Thank you FIVB for the feature. I am humbled to be able to share my journey not only as a volleyball player but also as a model. I hope to inspire others to go beyond their limitations. Pursue your passions and don’t be afraid to do the things you love. You are limitless ?? Click full article on my bio! A post shared by Majoy Baron (@majoybaron) on Jun 6, 2020 at 6:20pm PDT “Thank you FIVB for the feature,” she posted. “I am humbled to be able to share my journey not only as a volleyball player but also as a model. I hope to inspire others to go beyond their limitations. Pursue your passions and don’t be afraid to do the things you love. You are limitless.” Baron, who is a mainstay in the national team since 2018, told the website that she fell in love with beauty pageants growing up. It was her first love. “Before I became a volleyball player, I used to enjoy joining beauty pageants,” the 5-foot-10 stunner on and off the court told the website. “In the Philippines, beauty pageants are very popular. Miss Universe is our Super Bowl and is one of the major events the Filipinos look forward to every year. Growing up with that energy and enthusiasm, pageants and modelling easily became my first love.” Baron added that walking on the ramp puts her on a different high. “There was a rush every time I would put on a beautiful designer garment and walk down an elevated ramp in front of an audience,” she said. “What I enjoyed the most was transforming into a different person that was totally removed from my real self even just for a few minutes.” Her modelling career had to take a backseat when the Concepcion, Tarlac native was recruited to play for the Ramil De Jesus-mentored De La Salle University Lady Spikers in the UAAP. “My skills in high school weren't sufficient to make me stand out, I was tall and that was it. After a national tournament, only two schools scouted me for college. I was very grateful to even receive an offer from two schools with well-known and established volleyball programmes,” she said. “Going to DLSU for college turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made,” Baron continued. “It still gives me goose bumps remembering the time I was playing for the them. Those championships, trophies and individual awards we got were the fruits of our unending hard work and dedication to the sport.” Her first two years with the green and white were disappointing with DLSU losing to archrival Ateneo de Manila University in Season 76 and 77. Baron became a UAAP champion in 2016 in her third year and in her fourth year with the squad, she bagged Season 79 Most Valuable Player award as well as leading the Lady Spikers to a back-to-back. She left a winning legacy after closing her collegiate career as a three-peat champion. Baron also enjoyed a flourishing career in the commercial league, helping the Cargo Movers collect titles in the Philippine Superliga. Her talents and skills also landed her a spot in the national team. Baron saw action in the 2018 Asian Games and the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and was named Best Middle Blocker twice in the two-leg 2019 ASEAN Grand Prix. She returned to modelling after college, squeezing in photo shoots for magazines, product endorsements and fashion shows, in between her commitments with her club and national squad. “It was not hard juggling volleyball and modelling duties, but the determination and discipline that I honed while playing volleyball took over. Know your priorities, pursue excellence, and push to be better than before,” said Baron, who was the fourth Filipino featured in the website after Jaja Santiago, Sisi Rondina and Bryan Bagunas. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
