Devised one-act play stages personal experiences, survival stories during storms
Unós is a one-act play that explores the multiple meanings, significance and impact of storms in both personal and collective consciousness. It will be staged from 26 to 27 October. The drama spotlights a singular performance adaptation based on notable disaster survival experiences. It weaves the stories from individual accounts, reported narratives, news clippings, and excerpts from literary works. It likewise focuses on the weather disturbance’s remarkable effects on the individual’s mental, physical, emotional, physiological and spiritual well-being. Through the actors’ interpretation and re-enactment, the production aims to highlight how natural turbulences serve as powerful symbols that reflect the complexity of the human condition, such as desires and struggles. The 45-minute production was written and will be performed by De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Theater Arts Program alumni Janji Gamboa, Kate Loreno, Alyssa Torres and graduating students Michael Hilao and Jiana Velasco. It was co-directed by industry practitioner, production designer and Benilde Theater Arts Program chairperson Tuxqs Rutaquio and performance-maker and contemporary staging company Langgam Dance Troupe director Jenny Logico-Cruz. Security Bank pays it forward
Education serves as a lasting legacy for many. Living proof is the story of Rhona Alma Bello, a customer advisor from Security Bank’s Santiago Branch, who witnessed Security Bank Foundation Inc.’s turnover of a school building to her and her daughter’s alma mater, Santiago South Central School. “Having our bank’s foundation donate classrooms to the public school where I graduated made me even prouder. It is an honor to be part of an institution that invests in the construction of much-needed classrooms for our public schools,” Bello said. With over 37 years of dedicated service to the bank, Santiago branch business manager Agnes Alcid looks at the 12 classrooms donated to Santiago as one of her most memorable legacies upon retirement. “I hope the community will always remember the bank and its endeavors for improving the quality of education,” Alcid said. Security Bank’s branch business managers coordinate with community stakeholders to help SBFI implement its classroom construction projects. Recently, SBFI turned over 12 classrooms to Santiago City, Isabela consisting of a two-story, four-classroom building for Santiago North Central School SPED Center and a two-story, eight-classroom building for Santiago South Central School, among the most populated public schools in the city. After turning over 675 classrooms and benefiting 120 schools across 69 cities and municipalities in the country, SBFI Chairman Rafael F. Simpao Jr. said he hopes “the legacy that Security Bank shall leave behind, through our Classrooms Project, is that we have been instrumental in the improvement of the learning conditions in the country’s public schools and in the academic performance of students nationwide.” Santiago City Mayor Atty. Alyssa Sheena Tan also believes that education is an important legacy to leave for the people of her city. “It is imperative to invest in our people, especially the youth, for their education so they can succeed in the 21st-century economy,” Mayor Tan said. “Security Bank Foundation has bestowed to the Department of Education an invaluable asset that will help shape the lives of generations to come,” added Dr. Flordeliza Gecobe, Department of Education Division of Santiago City Schools Division Superintendent. Sustainable national sports program sought
Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro called for a sustainable national sports program to help young Filipino athletes achieve their full potential as he kicked off the opening ceremony of the 2023 Palarong Pambansa. “We want a sustainable national sports program for the Filipino youth,” Teodoro said. “We want to provide them with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed in sports and in life.” The mayor said that heavy rains in the past few days did not dampen the spirits of the delegates to the Palaro. They even braved the downpour during the grand parade. “Despite the heavy rains in the past few days, like the tests in our country, we are still here full of hope, have strengths, for a prosperous and stable country,” Teodoro said. The Palarong Pambansa is the country’s largest youth sporting event. This year’s games are being held in Marikina City from 1 to 5 August. Along with Teodoro, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte also graced the opening at the Marikina Sports Center. The Palarong Pambansa 2023 is anchored by the theme: “Batang Malakas, Bansang Matatag.” The opening ceremony commenced with a parade of student-athletes, starting from the Marikina River Park to the Marikina Sports Center. During the parade, the delegates were accompanied by marching bands and Marikina students who performed the regional dances of each delegation. Giving additional spectacle to the festive event was the dragon boat exhibition at the Marikina River organized by the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragon boat Federation. After all delegates converged at the MSC, the program proper kicked off with the Oath of Sportsmanship led by volleyball star Alyssa Valdez followed by the Oath of Officiating Officials led by Jonathan Oscar Jimenez, boxing tournament director. Volleyball player Bea de Leon, and basketball player Mark Barroca led the lighting of the Palaro Friendship Cauldron, together with the team captains representing the 17 participating regions in this year’s national games. Some Metro Manila mayors, provincial mayors, governors, members of House Representatives, and other national government officials graced the opening to show their full support to the student-athletes and to the City of Marikina. Final pay release delay
Dear Atty. Joji, I resigned from my previous company last May, but until now, or almost three months later, I have yet to receive my final pay. Despite following up with the company, they keep telling me that it is still being prepared, even though I have completed all the necessary requirements. Can the company withhold my final pay for this long, attorney? Alyssa *** Dear Alyssa, The short answer to your question is no, the company should have released your final pay within a period not exceeding 30 days. As a general rule, employers are prohibited from withholding wages from employees. The Labor Code provides under Article 116: “Withholding of wages and kickbacks prohibited. — It shall be unlawful for any person, directly or indirectly, to withhold any amount from the wages of a worker or induce him to give up any part of his wages by force, stealth, intimidation, threat, or by any other means whatsoever without the worker’s consent.” Further, Under Labor Advisory 06-2020, the Department of Labor and Employment has ruled that an employee’s final pay must be released within 30 days from the date of separation or termination of employment unless there is a more favorable company policy, individual or collective agreement, thereto. While the advisory directs that the employee shall receive his or her final pay within 30 days from the date of separation or termination in the absence of a more favorable company policy, individual, or collective agreement for the employee relating to payment of final pay upon separation, the Supreme Court ruled in the case of Milan v. National Labor Relations Commission, G.R. 202961, [4 February 2015] that requiring clearances before the release of last payments to the employee is a standard procedure among employers, whether public or private. Clearance procedures are instituted to ensure that the properties, real or personal, belonging to the employer but in the possession of the separated employee, are returned to the employer before the employee’s departure. From the foregoing, after fulfilling all the required clearances, you have the right to request the immediate release of your final pay if the 30-day period has already lapsed. The company is obligated to provide your final pay within 30 days from your last date of employment, whether you were terminated by the employer or resigned voluntarily. This time frame, as stated by DOLE (Department of Labor and Employment), aims to strike a balance between the employer’s need to manage effectively and the employee’s right to receive timely payment. Hope this helps. Atty. Joji Alonzo The post Final pay release delay appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
