FEU assistant coach regrets, apologizes to Mukaba on racial remark
An apologetic Far Eastern University men’s volleyball team assistant coach Eddieson Orcullo expressed regret about an ‘unintentional’ racial slur against a National University player during their University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85 men’s volleyball tournament match on Sunday. Orcullo was heard uttering the remark during the Tamaraws’ timeout in the third set of the match won by the still-unbeaten Bulldogs, 28-26, 25-21, 26-28, 25-23, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City. FEU called a timeout with NU ahead, 24-23, to talk things out. With the broadcast camera on head coach Rei Diaz plotting down a play and asking about his player’s blocker, Orcullo was heard in the background answering pertaining to Congolese Obed Mukaba as the one defending at the net. The clip of the huddle has since then circulated on social media, drawing flak disgust from netizens. “Right after what happened, I called (NU) coach Dante (Alinsunurin) and Coach Dong (Dela Cruz) to apologize especially to their player,” Orcullo told reporters. Mukaba, unfortunately, was not with the Bulldogs coaches when Orcullo called to apologize. “It was unintentional. My emotions got the best of me during that moment. I humbly ask for forgiveness for what I said,” the former national men’s team assistant coach said. Orcullo also vowed to reach out to the NU rookie to personally apologize. “I want to personally apologize to Obed for my lapse in judgment,” he said. The Tamaraws also released an official statement about the matter. “It is with a humble heart that Coach Edd together with the entire FEU MVT apologize to Obed Mukaba for the term used to refer to him in one of the huddles in today's game,” according to the statement posted on Twitter by team manager Obet Cruz. “Coach Edd has already personally called Coach Dante and Coach Dong of NU MVT to apologize. He will also personally reach out to Obed to apologize. He is currently finding a way to reach Obed. No excuses,it is a mistake. Please forgive all of us. We learn from this incident.” Alisunurin said that he has already talked with his middle blocker and has already accepted Orcullo and FEU’s apology. “The coaching staff of FEU reached out to us and apologized. We have also talked to Obed and he accepted their apology. He just wants to put an end to the issue,” the four-time UAAP champion coach said. “He was just hurt by what happened but for him it’s water under the bridge now.” The post FEU assistant coach regrets, apologizes to Mukaba on racial remark appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
