Bong Go lauds groundbreaking of the SHC in Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay
Sen. Bong Go commended the local government of Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay and the Department of Health for the successful groundbreaking of the town’s Super Health Center on Thursday, 8 June. In his video message, Go expressed his confidence that the said health facility would be able to provide accessible healthcare services to the residents of Mabuhay. “Patuloy po akong tutulong sa pagpaparami ng Super Health Centers sa bansa sa abot po ng aking makakaya. Sa mga itinayo ng Super Health Centers, nakita namin kung gaano kalaki ang naitutulong nito sa komunidad lalo na sa rural areas,” said Go. “It is a significant step towards enhanced healthcare services. Yun po ang layunin ng mga Super Health Centers, ang ilapit sa mamamayan ang serbisyong medikal ng gobyerno,” he added. Through the collective efforts of fellow lawmakers, sufficient funds had been allocated for 307 Super Health Centers in 2022 and 322 in 2023. The DOH, the lead implementing agency, identifies the strategic areas where they will be constructed. The Super Health Center is an enhanced version of the rural health unit, offering a wide range of health services such as database management, outpatient care, birthing facilities, isolation areas, diagnostic services (including laboratory tests, X-rays, and ultrasounds), pharmacy services, and ambulatory surgical units. Additionally, these centers provide services such as eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) care, oncology centers, physical therapy and rehabilitation centers, and telemedicine, which enables remote diagnosis and treatment of patients. In the province, other Super Health Centers were funded to be established each in Buug, Ipil, Kabasalan, Olutanga, and Titay. Aligned with the senator's commitment to healthcare, Go highlighted the presence of a Malasakit Center at Dr. George T. Hofer Medical Center in Ipil, which is prepared to assist the local residents. Additionally, neighboring Malasakit Centers can be found at Zamboanga City Medical Center, Mindanao Central Sanitarium, and Labuan General Hospital, all in Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur Medical Center in Pagadian City, and Margosatubig Regional Hospital, both situated in Zamboanga del Sur. The Malasakit Center is designed to provide particularly poor and indigent Filipinos with convenient access to medical assistance programs offered by the DOH, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. There are currently 158 operational centers in the country, which have assisted over seven million Filipinos, according to DOH. Go is the principal author and sponsor of the Malasakit Centers Act. In line with his commitment to accelerate the development of the province, Go, who also serves as Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, extended his support in the construction of multipurpose buildings in Alicia, Buug, Imelda, Ipil and Talusan; construction or improvement of roads in Buug, Diplahan, Imelda, Ipil, Naga and Olutanga; and the construction of street lights in Payao and Titay, among others. Funny old world: The week’s offbeat news
From Vietnam's leaders not being able to take a joke, to why Jude Law is proud that his new film stinks... Your weekly roundup of offbeat stories from around the world. Not so close, Jude British star Jude Law -- the former face of Dior Homme -- doused himself in a special fragrance to get in the mood to play Henry VIII, the English monarch who liked to chop and change wives, in the movie "Firebrand", which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Henry was getting old and moldy by the time he married his final wife, Catherine Parr. So, Law had a perfumier come up with a scent that summoned up the smell of "puss, blood, fecal matter, and sweat". Co-star Alicia Vikander, who played Parr, said she and the crew struggled not to puke from the stink on set. You can never be too old Old white men may have become a term of abuse elsewhere, but Cannes has refreshingly taken this much-maligned minority to its heart. No less than six are competing for its top prize. This year's festival is awash with pensioners, with 80-year-old Harrison Ford saddling up for one last ride as Indiana Jones and Robert De Niro and Michael Douglas also girding themselves to climb all those red-carpet steps to the premieres. Still, old guys can be a contrary lot. Take 80-year-old Martin Scorsese who premiered his "Killers of the Flower Moon" there but refused to compete for the Palme d'Or, saying, "It's time for others" -- by which he presumably meant even older men like favorite Marco Bellocchio, 83, and two-times winner Ken Loach, 86. Dead woman elected A dead woman has topped the poll in a local election in India two weeks after her sudden demise. Ashiya Bi's husband informed officials of the 30-year-old's death but they told AFP there was no way to remove her name from the ballot. "Once the electoral process begins, it cannot be halted or paused," said Bhagwan Sharan, a district officer in Uttar Pradesh. Despite being a first-time candidate, Bi took 44 percent of the vote. "Ashiya made friends easily and people didn't want to break the promise of support they gave her," said local Mohammad Zakir. Sense of humor failure A Vietnamese noodle seller has ended up behind bars for making a jokey viral video at the expense of one of the communist country's politburo members. Public security minister To Lam topped off a visit to London and Karl Marx's grave by dining at celebrity chef Salt Bae's pricey restaurant -- where a 24-carat gold leaf steak can set the average worker back more than $1,000. Street seller Peter Lam Bui posted a parody video impersonating Bae -- a.k.a. Turkish chef Nusret Gokce, who parlayed his meme stardom into a string of high-end eateries -- by sprinkling herbs on noodle soup and calling himself "Green Onion Bae". But officials did not see the funny side and had Lam convicted of spreading anti-state propaganda. The post Funny old world: The week’s offbeat news appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Ageing maestros and strong women at epic Cannes film fest
This year's Cannes Film Festival has been an epic mix of ground-breaking women's perspectives and nostalgic homages to icons of the 20th century. As it heads into awards night on Saturday, the 76th edition of the French Riviera festival has been a feast for film-lovers. Here are some of the highlights. Old masters At times, Cannes felt like a sort of dream retirement home populated by ageing male film icons. Harrison Ford, 80, showed he still had stamina in "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny", and got weepy when given an honorary Palme d'Or. Martin Scorsese, 80, and Robert De Niro, 79, brought their new film, "Killers of the Flower Moon". European auteurs Ken Loach, 86, Marco Bellocchio, 83, Wim Wenders, 77, and Victor Erice, 82, all premiered new films -- Erice with his first in 40 years. It was notable that many of the starriest attendees made their names in the 1980s and 1990s: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, Jude Law. "Over the last 10 years, we've done a really sh--ty job of creating a new generation of movie stars," one Hollywood agent moaned to Variety. Female gaze Michael Douglas, 78, who also got an honorary Palme d'Or, regaled the festival with memories of showing erotic thriller "Basic Instinct" here in 1992. "Watching those sex scenes on the biggest screen I'd ever seen... we had a very quiet dinner afterwards," he quipped. But it underlined how things have changed, with many films this year presenting more of a woman's perspective. "The entire range of human behavior should be accessible to women," said Portman, whose new film "May December" is a campy but complex look at a loving mother with a buried past as a sex offender. While Jude Law grabbed headlines as a tyrannical King Henry VIII in "Firebrand", the film's spotlight was really on Alicia Vikander as Catherine Parr, trying to escape the fate of the king's previous wives. Among many other examples were "Four Daughters" about a mother's role in the radicalisation of her children, and "How to Have Sex", a nuanced look at assault and consent among boozed-up Brits abroad. Hueller's double It was a strong competition this year and Germany's Sandra Hueller starred in two of the most stand-out films. In "The Zone of Interest" from British director Jonathan Glazer, she chillingly played the wife of a Nazi camp commandant, proud to be known as "the queen of Auschwitz". The unique film never shows the horrors of the camp, leaving them to be implied by background noises and small visual details. She also starred in "Anatomy of a Fall", another women-focused film, lauded by critics, about a wife accused of her husband's murder. Long films Audience patience was tested repeatedly, with Oscar-winner Steve McQueen presenting "Occupied City", a four-hour documentary about Amsterdam. Scorsese's Native American epic was widely praised though everyone felt the 210-minute runtime was a bit much. Ditto "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny", which stretched the action out for more than two-and-a-half hours. A documentary about Chinese workers, "Youth (Spring)" also clocked in at 210 minutes, and director Wang Bing warned he plans two more chapters that will make it over nine hours. Fashion Helen Mirren got the ball rolling in style with a blue updo on opening night -- but the red carpet was often more understated after that. The on trend "naked look" was adopted by models Julia Fox and Irina Shayk. Otherwise, vintage scored the biggest hits: Portman in a recreation of Christian Dior's famous 1949 Junon dress, and Lily-Rose Depp in a classic black sequin number from the Chanel archives. DiCaprio and Scorsese score raves at star-packed Cannes
Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese were set for a victory lap at Cannes on Sunday after their Native American crime epic, "Killers of the Flower Moon" scored rave reviews, while the festival prepared to bow down before Jude Law as King Henry VIII. Scorsese's latest opus, about a wave of murders among oil-rich Osage Indians in the 1920s, was showered in words like "searing", "triumph" and "masterpiece" by critics who scored the Cannes Film Festival's hottest ticket on Saturday night. Based on a non-fiction bestseller, the film sees DiCaprio as a weak-willed man who marries a wealthy Osage woman and is drawn into the deadly schemes of his kingpin uncle, played by Scorsese's other long-time muse, Robert De Niro. IndieWire said DiCaprio gives "his best-ever performance", while The Guardian awarded five stars for a "remarkable epic about the bloody birth of America". The stars were due to address reporters later on Sunday. But the festival was already set for another glitzy premiere later in the day, with "Firebrand" starring Jude Law as 16th-century English king Henry VIII alongside Alicia Vikander as his sixth and final wife, Catherine Parr. Drives me crazy While Scorsese's Apple-funded film had an out-of-competition slot at the festival, "Firebrand" is in the increasingly close race for its top prize Palme d'Or, to be announced on May 27. Among the entries are Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore's new film "May December" which received positive reviews after its Saturday premiere. The tale of a woman who caused a tabloid scandal by marrying a schoolboy -- and the actress who enters their lives years later to research a role -- was described as "deliciously campy" by IndieWire. Portman told AFP she liked seeing women "behave in morally ambiguous ways". "It always drives me crazy when people are like, oh if only women rule the world, it would be a kinder place. No, women are humans and come in all different complexities," she said. Arguably the current favorite for the Palme is British director Jonathan Glazer's "The Zone of Interest", a unique and horrifying look at the private life of a Nazi officer working at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Critics were near-unanimous in their praise, Variety calling it "chilling and profound". It was partly inspired by a book of the same name by British novelist Martin Amis, who died on Saturday at 73. Also well received was "Four Daughters", a heartbreaking documentary about radicalization within a Tunisian family that is both inventive and engaging. That may go down well with jury president Ruben Ostlund, last year's winner for "Triangle of Sadness", who likes his arthouse films with some lighter touches. A total of 21 films are in the main competition, with entries from past winners Wim Wenders, Ken Loach, and Nanni Moretti still to come. Aging icons The weather has been untypically wet this year, but Cannes has had no shortage of splashy moments. Law is not the only one playing a monarch -- the festival opened controversially with Johnny Depp's "comeback" film, "Jeanne du Barry", in which he takes the role of French king Louis XV. Aging Hollywood men have been a key theme of this 76th edition, with honorary Palmes for Michael Douglas and Harrison Ford, the latter at the world premiere of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny", as well as an appearance by Sean Penn for paramedics drama "Black Flies".
