Pilot who tried to shut flying plane’s engine on magic mushrooms
The off-duty American pilot who tried to shut down the engines of a plane mid-flight on Sunday had taken magic mushrooms and had not slept for 40 hours, court documents showed Tuesday. Magic mushrooms contain hallucinogenic chemical called psilocybin according to Medical News Today. After being cuffed with wrist restraints and seated at the rear of the aircraft, Joseph Emerson also tried to open an emergency exit “because I thought I was dreaming and I just want to wake up,” he told police, according to a criminal complaint. Emerson told the investigating officer it was his first time taking mushrooms. The 44-year-old was arrested on Sunday evening after the Alaska Airlines flight he disrupted made an emergency landing in Portland, Oregon. Emerson had boarded the flight — which was operated by Horizon Air — between Everett, Washington and San Francisco, sitting in the jump seat of the cockpit, in line with airline policy for non-working staff. A short way into the journey, after chatting with the pilots “Emerson attempted to grab and pull two red fire handles that would have activated the plane’s emergency fire suppression system and cut off fuel to its engines,” the United States Department of Justice said. “After a brief physical struggle with the pilots, Emerson exited the cockpit.” Alaska Airlines said Monday that pilots had reacted quickly to reverse the handles, and the aircraft with 80 passengers had landed safely. The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon said Emerson faces a federal charge of interfering with flight crew members and attendants. He has also been charged in Oregon with 83 counts of attempted murder, 83 counts of reckless endangerment and one count of endangering an aircraft. US media reported that he pleaded not guilty to these charges during a brief court appearance in Portland on Tuesday. The 19th Asian Games have yet to start, but Gilas Pilipinas is already winning the hearts and minds of Filipinos. Gilas coach Tim Cone swept local fans off their feet when he allowed them to watch their joint training session with the Gilas Women team last Thursday at the PhilSports Arena. After their workout, San Miguel Corporation director Alfrancis Chua gave the fans five minutes to have their pictures taken with their basketball idols. But when Cone approached Chua, he suddenly changed his mind and increased the allotted time to 15 minutes. Seeing Gilas — a collection of the country’s most popular and wealthiest athletes — go out of their way to mingle with fans is truly heartwarming. And it won’t be the last time they will see their basketball heroes as Cone has invited them anew to watch their friendly match against Changwon LG Sakers on Friday. But just a few weeks ago, this beautiful bond between Gilas and their fans was unthinkable. Gilas struggled to gain public support during the country’s hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup. At the same time, their head coach, Chot Reyes, was being bashed and heckled mercilessly due to their forgettable performance. Fans questioned Reyes’s integrity as a coach, especially when he benched Kai Sotto in their first game against the Dominican Republic. He was also criticized for relying too much on National Basketball Association star Jordan Clarkson, raising speculations that he was unprepared for the world’s biggest and most prestigious basketball event. The fans inside the Smart Araneta Coliseum made their presence felt. They booed Reyes during the player introductions against Italy, prompting some of his players, like Kiefer Ravena, Rhenz Abando and Clarkson, to rush to his defense. Even Reyes’s outfit didn’t escape the eyes of the public. Social media exploded with insults, adverse reactions, and comments after Reyes flaunted an ultra-expensive Thom Browne suit during their game against Angola. The money he spent, reportedly around P200,000, wasn’t worth it as Gilas suffered a 70-80 loss to the Angolans, dealing a major blow to their chances of advancing to the knockout stages. But his manner of coaching and posh outfit were not the only reasons Reyes struggled to deodorize his public image. When Gilas was preparing for the World Cup, Reyes shut the doors of their practice facility to fans and sportswriters. Instead of making the team available, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas assigned a media liaison who disseminated information and narrated what was happening through short videos and photos regularly posted on social media. That was the practice when Gilas trained at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, as well as when they were in Estonia and Lithuania. Gilas also played friendly matches against Ivory Coast, Mexico, and Montenegro at the PhilSports Arena with no one but a very few team staffers and federation officials in attendance. With the friendly matches being inaccessible, sportswriters had to resort to checking the social media pages of Gilas’s opponents and the SBP to get information and avoid the wrath of their editors. They jokingly called it “socmed journalism.” That’s why the appointment of Cone as Gilas’ head coach is a breath of fresh air. The 65-year-old Cone may be an American, but he knows the importance of gaining public approval. In fact, he started his career as a villain in the eyes of the masses after engaging with the charismatic Robert Jaworski in numerous coaching battles. But he let his coaching do the talking as he led Alaska to a grand slam in 1996 before winning another triple crown with San Mig Coffee in 2014. At Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, the most popular professional team in the country, Cone further cemented his reputation as a well-loved, well-respected coach when he turned the likes of LA Tenorio, Japeth Aguilar, Scottie Thompson and Justin Brownlee into fan favorites. Now, Cone is at the helm of Gilas Pilipinas, armed with a mission of not only winning an Asian Games medal but also bringing the national players closer to the public. It’s a tough order. But Cone is carrying it out to perfection. The post Our team appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
BayaniPay expands North American reach
Backed by an additional funding round of $2.1 million, Filipino-owned financial technology firm BayaniPay is expanding its services in North America to better serve more Asian American immigrants. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, BayaniPay CEO Winston Damarillo said the company will leverage the large concentration of Filipinos in Canada to grow its reach. Filipino immigrants in Canada recorded a population of almost one million in 2021, while Filipino immigrants in the United States or US numbered around 2 million, comprising more than 4 percent out of over 45.3 million US immigrants. “We aim to sustain this momentum and explore new territories. Our commitment towards improving and growing our platform is driven by the desire to make the lives of Filipinos easier, wherever they may be found,” Damarillo said. BayaniPay currently serves customers in California, Hawaii, New Jersey, and Alaska by allowing them to remit funds to their loved ones and make direct payments to service providers in the Philippines. Its platform allows customers to have easy access to a digital checking account, a debit card that maximizes their spending power, zero fee remittance fees, and market-leading forex rates. According to Damarillo, the company will utilize its new funding, which brought the total seed round of BayaniPay to $6.6 million to date, for the planned expansion. BayaniPay previously raised $4.5 million in seed funding, allowing it to scale its product features and explore new territories. During the first half of the year, BayaniPay saw its average transaction value surge to over P100 million per month, a huge jump from only P30.64 million in average transactions last year. Damarillo attributed this to the strong demand for cross-border payment solutions, including remittances as well as bill payments. BayaniPay thus targets to reach P1 billion in total transaction value before the end of the year. “We are on track to meet this milestone, as we continue to acquire more customers each month. The demand for BayaniPay continues to grow as more and more Filipinos see the value and benefit of convenience while allowing them to enjoy zero fees and competitive foreign exchange rates,” Damarillo said. Early this year, BayaniPay, in partnership with BDO Remit USA, launched its Buena Mano Rate program of $1 = P60 forex rate for its first-time remitters, which exponentially increased BayaniPay’s customer acquisition. The Buena Mano Rate program is applicable for up to $500 of every first remittance or first remittance in six months. BayaniPay plans to launch its loyalty program for active users this fourth quarter, which would grant them preferential high forex rates as incentives. As of end-June, BayaniPay recorded a 36-percent growth in new users. It is also strengthening its partnerships with other institutions to further expand its portfolio of services. BayaniPay targets to increase its current 10,000 user base to 100,000 in the next two years. The post BayaniPay expands North American reach appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Biden urges ‘national unity’ 22 years after 9/11
President Joe Biden called Monday for Americans to unite despite bitter political differences as the United States marked the 22nd anniversary of Al-Qaeda's 9/11 attacks. Bells were rung and the names of nearly 3,000 people were read out in somber ceremonies in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania where the hijacked planes struck. "Let's honor September 11 by renewing our faith in one another," said Biden, speaking at a US military base in Anchorage, Alaska as he traveled back from a trip to India and Vietnam. "We must never lose our sense of national unity, so let that be the common cause of our time." Speaking in front of a huge flag, Biden added that "terrorism, including political and ideological violence, is the opposite of all we stand for as a nation." His speech comes as the United States is increasingly polarized, with tensions likely to increase as Biden, a Democrat, heads into a likely election rematch next year with Republican former president Donald Trump. Trump has been indicted four times since April, including for efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, with the 6 January 2021 Capitol attack by his supporters still fresh in the public's memory. 'Never forget' In New York, Vice President Kamala Harris and current and former mayors joined victims' families at the 9/11 memorial on the site of the World Trade Center twin towers brought down by two aircraft flown by hijackers. The names of the more than 2,600 who died in New York were read out by family members and young relatives not alive at the time of the attack. "I wish I had a chance to really know you. Everyone in the family misses you. We will never forget," said the grandson of firefighter Allan Tarasiewicz, who was killed at age 45 during rescue operations at the World Trade Center. At the Pentagon in Washington, where the attackers plunged a third aircraft into the headquarters of the US military, a sailor rang a ship's bell for each of the 184 killed there. And in western Pennsylvania, where a fourth hijacked plane apparently heading toward Washington was forced to crash, bells were rung for each of the 40 passengers and crew who died. "September 11 made America a nation at war, and hundreds of thousands stepped up to serve our country in uniform," Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said at the Pentagon ceremony. "I know that it aches to remember this milestone year after year... The men and women of the Department of Defense will always remember." Across New York City, in Congress and elsewhere, a moment of silence was held to mark the attack, plotted by Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, who was found and killed nearly a decade later by US Navy Seals in a raid on his hideout in Pakistan. Biden noted in his speech that he himself had given the order for bin Laden's successor Ayman al-Zawahiri to be sent to the "gates of hell" last year in an airstrike in Afghanistan. "The soul of America is the fortitude we found in the fear of that terrible September day," he added. "The terrorists believed they could bring us to our knees, bend our will, break our resolve. But they were wrong, they were dead wrong." The post Biden urges ‘national unity’ 22 years after 9/11 appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
How milk can make dishes taste creamier and more delicious
At the recent launch of Judy Ann Santos as the new celebrity endorser of the Alaska milk brand, the actress helped demonstrate how to make dishes taste creamier and more delicious. She was with culinary experts, such as online food content creator Hazel Cheffy. The dishes they whipped up — pumpkin soup, fried chicken with special gravy, halo-halo — were served to the media representatives and other guests at the event. Santos later on shared this tip to DAILY TRIBUNE when asked what makes her halo-halo extra special: use frozen evaporated milk. “Kasi na-realize ko, ‘Oo nga, no, bakit hindi ’yung mismong Alaska evap ang i-freeze ko instead of using ice? Para mas malasahan ko ang gatas. Di ba pag natunaw na ang yelo, nagiging matabang? E, ayoko kasi na tumatabang ang halo-halo ko.” The chef and owner of Angrydobo restaurant also pointed out, “Gusto ko, dire-diretso ang kain ko. Ayoko nang nabibitin.” She then added, laughing, “Masyadong matakaw.” Here are two recipes from Alaska to try. ‘The Special Gift’ is a special film from new filmmakers
Philippine cinema has yet to recover from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, but thankfully, there are new producers who are willing to gamble on new projects that try to reach the audience in a different way. RC Gomez Entertainment Productions, for instance, will tour its maiden film, The Special Gift, in schools after the special screening on 9 September and before the release, later on, in theaters and other platforms. The start-up’s founder, Roy C. Gomez, said during the recent press conference for The Special Gift that he’s a film enthusiast who has long been dreaming of putting up his own film production. He finally found the right time when, after establishing his real estate and mining businesses, he met and became friends with showbiz stalwart Lawrence Roxas. In March 2020, Gomez and Roxas — as producer and director, respectively — were set to film their first movie, which tackles the real-life heroism of teachers in the barrios, but had to change course because of the pandemic lockdown. When restrictions eased, they decided to push through with their plan, though with a different movie. The Special Gift tells the story of 10-year-old Liam Castrillo (Franchesco Maafi, nicknamed Choco), whose disinterest in studying infuriates his strict father Fernan (Mike Lloren) but is actually due to mild autism. With the help of his teachers Nico Ignacio (Migui Moreno) and Marga Castello (Ella Sheen), the misunderstood boy finds his true talent, which causes more conflict with his father. He then makes a decision that eventually leads to their reconciliation and the rebuilding of their family. Roxas, who’s making his feature film directorial debut, said he handpicked everybody in the cast because he had worked with them in various TV, movie and theater productions. Meanwhile, he found his lead actor through the recommendation of his assistant director on GMA 7. “Pag-present ng picture, ‘Ah, eto na! Pak!’ Kinuha na namin agad si Choco,” the director said, referring to the child actor who has appeared in several TV commercials (Alaska, Del Monte, Surf) and drama series (Beautiful Justice, Nakarehas na Puso, Hearts on Ice). Choco’s reaction: “Sobrang saya, very proud. Kasi nabigyan ako ng opportunity na ma-ano ko po ang role nang maayos” (Very happy, because I was given the opportunity to do my role well). Gomez happily reported that a follow-up project under his production company is already in the works with the help of other investors. It’s going to be another advocacy movie, he said. “Ganyan ang gusto kong gawin, mga family-oriented, pang-school. May mga moral values na talagang matututunan” (These are the kinds of movies I really want to make — family oriented, for schools, and with moral values to be learned). Judy Ann Santos on what makes her say yes (or no) to endorsing a product
Since Judy Ann Santos shot to stardom in the 1990s for starring in a string of hit drama series (Mara Clara, Esperanza, Sa Puso Ko Iingatan Ka), the-now 45-year-old actress, wife, mom, chef and restaurateur has remained an in-demand product endorser. She has actually lost count of her endorsements, but for a good reason. “Ayaw kong bilangin kasi baka maudlot e” (I don’t like to count because it might get cut short), she told DAILY TRIBUNE at her launch as the new endorser of the Alaska milk brand. “Hindi ako nagbibiro when I say I manifest the brands that I endorse simply because I use them for the longest time, like Alaska and most of the products I endorse. Kasi hindi mahirap i-endorso ang isang produkto kung ginagamit mo naman” (It’s not hard to endorse products that you actually use). Santos went on enumerating her criteria in accepting a product endorsement deal: “If a product actually offers me to endorse their product and hindi ko pa siya nagagamit, I have to use it for at least six months. Kailangan ko siyang masubukan, kailangan naniniwala ako sa kanya, kailangan alam ko ang sasabihin ko, kailangan maganda ang epekto n’ya sa akin. Kasi kung hindi, hindi ko siya mae-endorse.” (I have to try it, I have to believe in the product, I need to make I sure I know what I would be saying, it’s important that it works for me. Otherwise, I can’t endorse it.) “And I’ve had a few products na kailangan kong mag-decline,” she added. “Hindi naman sa hindi maganda ang effect, hindi lang maganda ang experience ko. But it doesn’t mean na kapag hindi maganda ang experience ko, hindi na magiging maganda ang experience sa ’yo. Hindi ko lang siya mae-endorse kasi hindi ako naniniwala. Hindi tumawid sa akin ang produkto. “Somewhat like that, especially pagka gamot, vitamins. Kailangan either nagamit ko na siya noon pa or napagamit mo na sa akin for at least six months para makita ko talaga ’yung resulta n’ya. Para alam ko ang sasabihin ko sa kanya.” (And I’ve had a few products that I had to decline endorsing – not because the effect wasn’t good, only that I didn’t have a good experience with them. But that’s not to say it won’t be a good experience for others. I just can’t endorse the products because I don’t believe in it… Especially when it comes to medicines, vitamins. It’s either I’ve used them before or I get to try them first for six months so I can really see the results, and I would know what I’m talking about.) Enjoying family life, self-care If Santos is not busy with showbiz work (her latest is a TV series directed by Erik Matti) and restaurant duties (developing new dishes for her resto Angrydobo’s two branches, for instance), she enjoys looking after her and her husband Ryan Agoncillo’s three children: Yohan, 18; Lucho, 12; and Luna, seven. Santos said she enjoys taking good care of herself, too, when complimented for her slender figure and youthful glow. She then mentioned detoxification as one of the reasons. “Ginagawa ko siyang part ng monthly routine just to feel better,” she explained. “More on clean eating, more on proper sleep. I wake up at 5 a.m. I make the kids’ baon, prepare ko ang baon ni Ryan sa work. And I do about my day. Talagang antok na rin ako ng hapon” (I would already be sleepy in the afternoon). Sleep, she said, is very important at her age. “Ang puyat sa akin ngayon parang tatlong araw ko nang gamutin.” (It would now take me three days to recover from lack of sleep.) Thus, being healthy is more important to Santos than anything else. Now that she has lost weight, she feels lighter, more energetic. “Naramdaman ko ’yung naging positive ang mindset ko, mas positive ang energy ko, mas kalmado ako with what I’m doing. So more on fruits, juicing, organic grains.” The post Judy Ann Santos on what makes her say yes (or no) to endorsing a product appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
