PCG dismisses oil spill fear in Calatagan vessel sinking
The Philippine Coast Guard on Tuesday dismissed fears that the sinking Anita DJ II that sunk in the vicinity waters of Calatagan last Sunday may cause an oil spill just like what happened at Naujan, Oriental Mindoro a few months ago. In a television interview, PCG District Southern Tagalog commander, Commodore Geronimo Tuvilla, maintained that the sunken vessel, reportedly carrying 70,000 liters of diesel, cannot incur hazards as the chemical can easily dissipate once exposed to sunlight. “Hindi ganon kataas ang threat nya dahil marine diesel ang karga nitong lumubog na bangka. Madali itong mag-dissipate sakaling maarawan o matangay ng alon at hindi na ito mag-cause ng any alarm sa community dahil ang viscosity nito ay madaling mawala,” Tuvilla said. Environment group Protect Verde Island Passage on Monday aired fears of another oil spill in the said waters, as the area is part of the internationally acclaimed biodiversity hotspot Verde Island Passage that still struggles to recover from the MT Princess Empress tragedy that spilled 900,000 liters of industrial oil exactly six months prior. “May nakikita na po tayong oil sheens pero compared sa industrial oil na malapot na kumalat sa Mindoro, mas madaling ma-contain at ma-combat ang diesel. We have already deployed our vessels there and they are currently combatting those sheens using water cannons. And it’s a good thing na nasagip natin ang 13 crew na sakay nito,” Tuvilla added, adding that the substance has not yet reached the shoreline near the community. The PCG added that the distressed boat with a gross tonnage of 448.83 tons and net tonnage of 273.59 tons is owned by IRMA Fishing, departed Navotas Port Sunday dawn bound for Palawan fishing grounds.
