More protection for GCash users
Digital money transfers are now an integral part of daily transactions. However, scammers, fraudsters and cybercriminals have devised various strategies to take advantage of users and exploit the cashless economy. In addition to utilizing topnotch cybersecurity systems, the Philippines’ number-one finance super app, GCash, has added another layer of protection with the introduction of “Send Money Protect” on its in-app feature, GInsure. SMP provides users confidence and peace of mind when sending money digitally for as little as P30 per month. SMP provides users comprehensive protection from the most common scams such as online shopping fraud, account takeovers and social engineering, for transactions done via “Express Send” in the app. SMP, offered in partnership with Chubb, the world’s largest publicly traded property and casualty insurance company, can easily be availed once every 30 days. Studies show that 45 percent of Filipino adults have been targeted by scams, with 11 percent falling victim to such activities. This has led to uncertainties toward digital payment methods among some users, hampering milestones already achieved in financial inclusion. “We at GCash believe in building partnerships that amplify the value we provide to our users. That's why we've teamed up with Chubb, a global insurance leader and our partner in consumer protection, to bring you an added layer of protection. This collaboration ensures that you have added financial protection from the unexpected when transacting online, giving you the confidence that your hard-earned money is in safe hands,” said GCash vice president for New Businesses Winsley Bangit. Chubb Philippines’ country president Mari Rachelle Canta also emphasized that, “Our partnership with GCash further strengthens our mission to serve millions of customers by providing a safety net through embedding insurance in everyday transactions. Now, GCash users have enhanced protection from cybercrimes with ‘Send Money Protect.’” The partnership between GCash and its consumer insurance partner Chubb was solidified through a memorandum of agreement signing on 13 September 2023. Signatories from Gcash included VP for New Businesses Winsley Bangit and GInsure head Joseph Nino Young, while those from Chubb in the Philippines included country president Mari Rachelle Canta and VP and head of Consumer Lines Maurice Hilario. While the feature is currently in its beta version and available exclusively to GCash and Chubb employees for now, GCash has announced that it will be fully rolled out by 13 November 2023, promising a safer, worry-free online transaction experience for all. England, Wales grapple with growing teen knife violence
Elianne Andam was headed to school like any other teenager in London last month when she was stabbed to death, becoming the latest victim of rising knife crime in England and Wales. The 15-year-old suffered a "brutal attack" in Croydon, south London, shortly after she and her friends had stepped off a public bus on a Wednesday morning, prosecutors have said. A 17-year-old boy arrested nearby just over an hour later will stand trial for her murder next April. One of the latest tragic cases of teen-on-teen violence in the British capital, it has become an increasingly common problem nationwide over recent decades. A few days after Andam's death, 16-year-old Taye Faik died in Edmonton, north London, following another knife attack. He was the 14th teenager to be killed with a blade in the city this year. The UK government, and mayors in some of its biggest cities and regions, have repeatedly vowed to tackle the persistent scourge of youth violence, but appear to be failing. Between 2012 and 2022, the number of knife and offensive weapon offences amongst children aged 10-17 increased by 19 percent across England and Wales, according to the Ministry of Justice. That compared with an eight percent increase among adults. 'Social issue' With the sale of guns strictly controlled in Britain, teenagers intent on violence typically turn to blades, including machetes and so-called "zombie" knives. Inspired by horror films, they often have one smooth blade and one serrated edge, and feature graphics or text on the blade or handle glorifying violence. Possessing them has been illegal since 2016, but some manufacturers have managed to evade this quasi-ban by altering their design. The government unveiled plans in August to outlaw them entirely and give police more powers to seize the weapons, which it said "seem to be designed to look menacing with no practical purpose". The new legislation will also increase the maximum penalty for their "importation, manufacturing, possession and sale" from six months to two years. However, machetes and zombie-style knives can be bought with relative ease for less than £50 ($60) on social media platforms like TikTok or Snapchat, circumventing online age restrictions, according to anti-knife crime campaigners. They urge more focus on the roots of the problem. "Knife crime isn't just a law-and-order issue, it's a social issue," Patrick Green, president of the Ben Kinsella Trust, told AFP. The anti-knife crime charity is named after a London teenager murdered in 2008. "When you start to unpick knife crime, you start to look at social deprivation, poverty, the lack of social mobility, mental health probation for young people," Green said. 'Awful weapons' Youth knife violence is more prevalent in Britain than many other European countries, he noted. "It's difficult to determine why exactly," Green added. London mayor Sadiq Khan's office blamed the austerity policies of successive Tory governments in power since 2010, which it argued have "decimated youth services" in the capital and beyond. As many as 130 centers offering sports and arts activities in the city have closed over that period, its statement noted. The pandemic and the country's worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation, driven by decades-high inflation, are also seen as contributing to the problem. Following the recent knife crime deaths in the capital, the Labour mayor urged the Conservative government in a letter "to speed up the legislation so we can ban these awful weapons as soon as possible". "The proposals also need to be toughened up to close the loopholes that could still allow the sale of these weapons," Khan added. He also wrote this month to London's 500 secondary schools reiterating that wand metal detectors to screen pupils for weapons were available, as well as police officers to deliver knife crime prevention talks. His opposition Labour party -- well ahead in polls for over a year -- has pledged to spend up to £100 million if it wins power in an election expected next year on a "Young Futures" program. It would fund new youth mentors and mental health hubs in every community, youth workers in schools set up for troubled students and hospitals, alongside wide-ranging public sector reforms. Rotaract Club Makati holds 18th induction, handover ceremonies
The induction ceremony, held at the Makati Rotary Club Foundation Building in Guadalupe, Viejo, Makati City, was a grand affair that brought together distinguished Rotarians including District Governor Nominee Reginald Alberto “Reggie” Nolido; Rotary Club of Makati president Senen “Bing” Matoto; New Generation director, James Julian Lim; Rotarian Filomeno “Boy” Arteche; Rotaractors and friends. The event began with a warm welcome by past president April Jan Sembrano who expressed his enthusiasm regarding a busy year ahead for the new set of officers, even as he highlighted particular instances of service in the community provided by the Club during his leadership. RC-Makati president Senen “Bing” Matoto” then gave the keynote address in which he emphasized the bringing of hope to the world through service. Saturday evening’s event was highlighted by the installation of the Club’s new officers who come from various backgrounds but are all driven by the common goal of making a positive impact in the community. The ceremony was officiated by Director Lim. A touching moment was when all four newly inducted members, Darlah Marcela S. Leonardo, Jazmin Faye A. Berrame, John Martin R. Revilla and Shania M. Tumbagahan took the Rotaract pledge. With their right hands raised, they vowed to uphold the principles of Rotaract, which is particularly focused on community service, professional development and fellowship. That moment symbolized the collective commitment of the club members to work together for a better Makati. As the ceremony came to a close, outgoing president John Nicole dela Cruz delivered his Valedictory Address followed by incoming president Adrian Emmanuel Manuel’s sharing of the Club’s plans and objectives set for this Rotary year. The initiatives will include community service projects, leadership development workshops, and partnerships. “The Rotaract Club of Makati is determined to be a force for positive change, and its members are all eager to roll up their sleeves and get to work,” said Manuel in his speech. Clearly, the induction ceremony held last Saturday by the Rotaract Club of Makati was an inspiring testament to the power of young adults coming together with a shared purpose. Rotaract is a service club for young people ages 18 and up who are dedicated to finding innovative solutions to the most pressing challenges in a community and beyond while developing leadership skills and making friends from around the world. The Clubs decide how to organize and run their own affairs, manage their funds, and plan and carry out activities and service projects that are important to their communities. Rotaract Clubs are members of Rotary International; mother clubs, e.g., Rotary Club of Makati, sponsoring Rotaract Clubs, offer guidance and support and work as partners in service. Daring rescue saves 8 from dangling cable car
Military helicopters plucked a child trapped inside a broken cable car while commandos zipped on the steel lines to rescue seven others one by one in a remote valley of Pakistan on Tuesday. The cable car passengers, including six schoolboys, were trapped for hours in the gondola when it broke down at around 7 a.m. midway through its journey above the lush green Allai Valley. Residents used mosque loudspeakers to alert neighborhood officials of the emergency, and hundreds of people gathered on both sides of the ravine — hours away from any sizeable town — to watch the dramatic rescue. After 12 hours of preparation, the rescue began. A video of the first rescue showed a teenager in a harness hanging at the bottom of a swinging rope under a helicopter as crowds cheered with relief. “After tireless efforts by highly skilled pilots and SSG personnel, a child was rescued but the mission had to be canceled due to bad weather,” the military’s media wing said in a statement. By nightfall, commandos from Pakistan’s Special Service Group — known as the Maroon Berets — used the cable keeping the gondola from plunging into the valley as a zipline to rescue the rest of those stranded. Bilal Faizi, an official with Pakistan’s emergency service, said the two adults were the last to be brought to safety. “Great teamwork by the military, rescue departments, district administration as well as the local people,” Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Earlier Tuesday, as the rescue operation unfolded, headmaster Ali Asghar Khan told Agence France-Presse by phone that the children were all teenage boys and students at his government high school Battangi Pashto. “The school is located in a mountainous area and there are no safe crossings, so it’s common to use the chairlift,” Khan said. Children trapped in cable car dangling over Pakistan ravine
Six children are among the eight people who have been trapped all day Tuesday in a cable car dangling over a deep valley in Pakistan, with military helicopters hovering nearby ahead of a possible rescue attempt. The children were using the chairlift to get to school when a cable broke at a height of around 1,200 feet (about 365 meters) midway through its journey in a remote, mountainous part of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. "The evening is coming nearer. Tell us why the helicopters are going back?" Gul Faraz, one of the adults stuck in the cable car, said to AFP by phone. "For God's sake help us," he earlier told local media. Several military helicopters flew reconnaissance sorties and an airman was lowered by harness to deliver food, water and medicine, Tanveer Ur Rehman, a local government official, told AFP. "This is a delicate operation that demands meticulous accuracy. The helicopter can not approach the chairlift closely, as its downwash (air pressure) might snap the sole chain supporting it," he said. Anxious crowds gathered on both sides of the ravine, which is several hours from any sizeable town. "Every time the helicopter lowered the rescuer closer to the chairlift, the wind from the helicopter would shake and disbalance the chairlift making the children scream in fear," Ghulamullah, chairman of the Allai valley area, told Geo News. 'What can they do?' The gondola broke down at around 7:00 am local time, with residents using mosque loudspeakers to alert neighborhood officials across the Allai valley. Headmaster Ali Asghar Khan told AFP by phone that the children were teenage boys and students at his government high school Battangi Pashto. "The school is located in a mountainous area and there are no safe crossings, so it's common to use the chairlift," Khan said. "The parents are gathered at the site of the chairlift. What can they do? They are waiting for the rescue officials to get their children out. We are all worried." Abid Ur Rehman, a teacher from another school in the area, said around 500 people had gathered to watch the rescue mission. "Parents and women are crying for the safety of their children," he told AFP. Syed Hammad Haider, a senior Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial official, said the gondola was hanging about 1,000 to 1,200 feet above the ground. Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar issued a directive for all chairlifts in mountainous areas to be inspected and for those that are not "safety compliant" to be immediately closed. Cable cars that carry passengers and sometimes cars are common across the northern areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and Gilgit-Baltistan, and are vital in connecting villages and towns in areas where roads cannot be built. In 2017, 10 people were killed when a chairlift cable broke, sending passengers plunging into a ravine in a mountain hamlet near capital Islamabad. I’m a Barbie Girl… in the Barbie world, life in plastic, it’s fantastic… I bet you sang that part, right? All I know is that one day I opened my social media account and almost everyone was wearing pink, from celebrities to influencers, even politicians were jumping into the Barbie era. Almost all of my online friends were uploading photos of themselves in a Barbie box frame posing like real-life dolls. Even while I was doing my groceries and inside shopping malls, I encountered people dressed as Barbies and Kens, and sometimes I would ask myself, am I being different for not diving into the Barbie madness? Little did I know the Barbie effect was working on me subconsciously. I wore pink and white for an online interview and the interviewer told me I was being a Barbie on cam. At that moment I realized I was indeed living in a Barbie world now, and that the Barbie effect was unknowingly consuming me, too. I am now one of those people who have dived into this Barbie madness. The Barbie effect is superb! Maybe this could help too with government projects where we can get people involved in so many creative and positive ways, especially if it relates to them. But since it’s Thirstday, I bet you’re looking for thirst-quenching facts about Barbie. Did you know that the first Barbie was based on a postwar German cartoon? Barbie has been the subject of debates for supposedly creating the stigma of a perfect body for kids and young adults. If Barbie was, in fact, a real person, her measurements according to researchers would be 32-17-28, nearly impossible for a real woman. In fact, research conducted in the 1990s concluded that not only are Barbie’s weight and body proportions not attainable but they are also unhealthy. In the movie, Barbies lead a matriarchal society. We Barbies lead the world and our Kens are just beach dudes! In a sudden twist of fate, the Kens realized they were second-class citizens, so they mounted a coup and established a patriarchal society just like what we actually have right now in the real world. Oh, so sad. But unlike in the former matriarchal setup, the Barbies let the Kens and the outcast share power, leadership, and the most important thing, responsibility! Wow! Way to go, Barbies! We can draw important lessons from the movie where real-world Barbies like us can be part of making a positive change in society. We must embrace our inner strengths as we accept that we are not perfect. We must, and we can show the world that, yes, we can lead. In the Philippine context, the situation of women is not ideal but is constantly improving steadily. Some of the socio-economic and political affairs to which we can channel our natural feminine touch and strength include foreign affairs and diplomacy, conflict resolution, food security, social welfare, information industry, tourism and shipping, and much more! Let us take a closer look at food security and tourism. Why? Well, Barbies love food and love to travel! There are what we call Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas or GIDAs — these possess the most abundant natural resources suitable for food production and are home to splendid picturesque spots of nature so suited for tourism! But we need roads leading to those places and we need robust transport systems to make it work. Most of the GIDAs can be reached only through unreliable trails using “habal-habal.” Barbies with our Kens can be rallying figures in those aspects where we can best help those in need. The movie told us to embrace our femininity but I say let us embrace the wholeness of society whether you are a Ken or a Barbie. Women cannot exist alone and so with men. That Barbie effect? I hope we can draw a positive impact from that one and set ideal, yet realistic, goals and standards to cater to the needs of the public. Remember when Barbie released their dolls with Down syndrome this year? In recent years they also created dolls with prosthetic limbs, and curvy and black Barbies to cater to the clamor of groups that said Barbies did not represent real women. You see? We can always meet halfway, especially when it comes to providing solutions to the common problems of people, whether in a local or national government setup. We listen and modify, and we get feedback if projects are effective or not. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter whether a Barbie or a Ken leads and steers. All that matters is that we need to act together, be together, and move together to arrive at our intended destination because... Barbies and Kens, we are in the same boat. Common urinary health issues among adults: Risks, prevention, solution
A healthy bladder, which is a hollow organ much like a balloon, can hold up to 16 ounces of urine for two to five hours. But as you age, your urinary functions change. The elastic bladder tissue may toughen, become less flexible, and therefore diminish in its capacity to store urine. A whole lot of other kidney and bladder changes may occur, thus causing urinary health problems......»»

Phosphorus and your kidneys
The mineral phosphorus is an essential mineral in the body. It makes up part of our bones and teeth and even our DNA. It also helps the body function properly and helps how the body uses energy. It is naturally present in many foods, and a phosphorus deficiency is rare if you have a balanced diet with no need to take supplements. The recommended nutrient intake of phosphorus for adult Filipinos is 700 mg per day, 1,250 mg for adolescents and teenagers, when bones are growing the most. The average daily consumption of adults is about 1,200-1,500 mg/day and the upper tolerable level is about 3,000-4,000 mg/day, but high phosphorus intakes rarely produce adverse effects in healthy people. The kidneys, intestines and bones regulate phosphorus levels in the body. When the kidneys stop working properly, as in chronic kidney failure, the body cannot get rid of phosphate properly and phosphorus levels go up. Too much phosphorus in the body makes calcium come out of the bones, making them weak and prone to fracture. This misplacement of calcium can also affect blood vessels, cause blood pressure and heart disease. It is thus very important for patients with kidney disease to watch their phosphorus intake, limiting it to about 800 mg per day. Many different types of foods contain phosphorus — meats and poultry, organ meats (liver), fish, dairy products, eggs, nuts, beans, vegetables and grains, including bread and rice. On average, an ounce of meat has about 65 mg of phosphorus. A cup of milk or yogurt about 220 mg. A cup of white rice has about 70 mg of phosphorus. A cup of long-grain brown rice has about 200 mg. While whole grain bread can be a healthy source of fiber, one slice has about 40 mg of phosphorus compared to white bread with 25 mg. [caption id="attachment_139743" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/morgane perraud | EGGS are high in phosphorus.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_139742" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/louise lyshoj | ASIDE from carbohydrates, breads are rich in phosphorus as well.[/caption] Patients with CKD are usually advised to limit their phosphorous by limiting their protein intake and to replace animal proteins with plant-based protein sources. Care should also be taken when eating processed and frozen foods which can contain phosphate additives which are used to preserve or stabilize these foods. About 70 percent of phosphorus from natural food sources is absorbed by the body, and 100 percent of phosphorus is absorbed from processed foods. One way to limit phosphorus intake is to check the ingredient list of processed foods for the letters “phos” for additives, such as phosphoric acid, disodium phosphate, sodium pyrophosphate and sodium polyphosphate. These additives can add almost 70 mg of phosphorus to your diet. Also look out for phosphorus in drinks like colas (they contain phosphoric acid), flavored waters, iced teas, bottled juices and bottled coffee. [caption id="attachment_139740" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/ alireza nikzad | PHOSPHORUS is naturally found in meat.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_139741" align="aligncenter" width="525"] photograph courtesy of unsplash/ faris mohammed | RICE contains a lot of phosphorus.[/caption] It can be difficult for patients with CKD to manage their diets and many ask, “What can I eat?” Here are some examples and ways to prepare them that are lower in phosphorus: Chicken thigh, skinless, three ounces = 190 mg Old-fashioned rolled oats (instead of instant), ½ cup cooked = 120 mg Shrimp, three ounces = 120 mg Almond milk, ½ cup = 50 mg Potato, without skin, medium size (two inches diameter), double-boiled = 50 mg Spaghetti noodles, ½ cup = 42 mg Apple, medium size = 10 mg Egg white, from one egg = 5 mg (1 whole egg with the yolk has 95 mg of phosphorus) Patients with CKD should opt for whole foods rather than processed or fast food. Check labels for ingredients for hidden sources of phosphorous. Many online sources list the amount of phosphorous per serving for many common foods. Portion control can also help limit the amount of phosphorus per meal. And remember that eating too much of a low-phosphorus food makes it a high phosphorus food. No brushing aside hypertension — experts
Health experts have reminded Filipinos of the importance of monitoring their blood pressure ahead of National Hypertension Awareness Month in May. In a public briefing, Philippine Society of Hypertension president Dr. Dolores Bonzon and PSH vice president Dr. Alejandro Diaz warned of rising hypertension-related deaths. “In 2019, 10.8 million people (around the world) died due to hypertension and its complications, including stroke and heart attack, which are also among the top 10 leading causes of mortality in our country,” Bonzon said. Diaz added that the prevalence of hypertension has been rising in the Philippines, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. “Many people have not had the chance to have their blood pressure measured or receive treatment, which has contributed to the increase in hypertension cases,” he said. He encouraged all Filipinos aged 18 and above to participate in the May Measurement Month survey by scanning the QR code provided and inputting their blood pressure and pulse rate readings. “Hypertension awareness through blood pressure screening during May Measurement Month has increased to over 30 percent, which shows the program’s effectiveness,” he said. Aside from consuming salty foods, stress is also a contributing factor to hypertension, the experts warned. Dr. Diaz advised the public to adopt healthy lifestyle habits, such as reducing salt intake, exercising regularly, and managing stress. “Preventable deaths due to hypertension can be avoided through medication and lifestyle changes,” he said. Meanwhile, the Department of Science and Technology–Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) said the prevalence of hypertension among Filipino adults aged 20 years old and above has significantly declined from 2018 to 2019. This is despite the increase in the prevalence of hypertension among Filipino adults of the same age from 2013 to 2015. DOST-FNRI noted that controlled hypertension is more common among females, who have a higher level of attention to healthcare and adherence to prescribed medications. Additionally, adults with higher educational attainment tend to have a higher rate of controlled hypertension than those with lower educational status, as they have better access to anti-hypertensive medications.
