Reports: Carmelo Anthony clears waivers, set to join Rockets

NBA.com staff report Carmelo Anthony is one step closer to joining the Houston Rockets, according to reports from Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports and Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Sources: Carmelo Anthony has cleared waivers, setting up the 10-time All-Star to sign free-agent deal with the Houston Rockets. — Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) August 1, 2018 Carmelo Anthony passes through waivers at 5 PM ET, clearing way for him to inform Houston that he will sign a one-year, $2.4M deal with Rockets. — Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) August 1, 2018 Anthony was waived by the Atlanta Hawks on Monday (Tuesday, PHL time) after being traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder on July 19 (July 20, PHL time). Per various reports, the veteran forward is expected to join Chris Paul, James Harden and the Rockets now that he has officially entered the free-agent player pool. According to Wojnarowski, the contract is expected to be a one-year deal worth $2.4 million. Anthony’s lone season in Oklahoma City was largely a bust. He averaged 16.2 points and struggled at times in his new role alongside Russell Westbrook and Paul George. The 10-time All-Star posted career lows in scoring average and field goal percentage, and the Thunder were ousted in the first round of the playoffs by Utah. The 34-year-old Anthony had been the headliner his entire career — he’s 19th in NBA history with 25,417 points — but he was more of a catch-and-shoot scorer last season instead of the isolation specialist he had always been. His playing time dwindled in the playoffs. In Game 6 of the first-round series against Utah that ended Oklahoma City’s season, he played fewer minutes than reserve Jerami Grant. After the season, he said he prefers to play with the ball in his hands more and said coming off the bench is “out of the question.” Anthony opted in earlier this summer to accept the $28 million he was due next season. The Thunder re-signed Grant, then it was reported that Anthony and the Thunder would eventually part ways, though it was unclear how it would happen. Anthony would help the Rockets fill their void at forward after the team lost Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute during free agency. Reports: Mavericks reach deal with Ferrell, close with Dirk

NBA.com staff report The Dallas Mavericks are making sure one of their young, talented players stays in the fold and are working to keep their franchise icon from going anywhere, too. According to ESPN's Tim MacMahon and Yahoo Sports' Shams Charania, the Mavs have an agreement in place with guard Yogi Ferrell on a two-year contract. In addition, Mavs all-time leading scorer Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavs are making plans to finalize a one-year deal with the former Finals MVP, Charania writes. Last week, the Mavs rescinded Ferrell's qualifying offer, which made him an unrestricted free agent. However, that move was just a formality, MacMahon writes, as the sides were in the final stages of working out the new deal (which costs Dallas slightly less in annual salary). Here's more from Charania on the deal Ferrell and the Mavs reached: Free agent guard Yogi Ferrell has agreed to a two-year, $5.3 million deal to return to the Dallas Mavericks, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Ferrell returned to the Mavericks with the promise of being the backup shooting guard next season, league sources said. The second season of his deal includes a trigger date on July 7, league sources said. Ferrell, 25, earns a two-year contract after spending his first two NBA seasons with the Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets. He joined the Mavericks on a 10-day contract in January 2017, one month after the Nets waived him. Ferrell was an instant success, and had a performance of 32 points and nine 3-pointers against the Portland Trail Blazers on Feb. 3, 2017, leading to a two-year deal. Last season, Ferrell averaged 10.2 points, three assists and 2.5 rebounds per game as he started 21 of 82 games played for Dallas. Per both ESPN and Yahoo Sports, the Mavs are expected to use the remaining salary cap room they have to give Nowitzki a contract. Here's more from Charania on that deal: In what could be Dirk Nowitzki’s final NBA season, the future Hall of Famer and the Dallas Mavericks plan to finalize a one-year, $5 million deal, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Nowitzki and the Mavericks are not in a rush to sign the contract, but Nowitzki remains a Maverick for life. The Mavericks and guard Yogi Ferrell agreed to a two-year, $5.3 million deal on Thursday, leaving the team with $5 million in salary cap space to re-sign Nowitzki. In late June, Nowitzki and the Mavs mutually opted out of his contract for next season to give Dallas more room to make moves in free agency. The Mavs made a sizable splash in free agency this summer as they added former All-Star center DeAndre Jordan. Nowitzki, who has played his entire NBA career with Dallas, became the first international member of the NBA's 30,000-point club in 2017. He is the team's all-time leader in points scored, games played, rebounds, blocks, field goals made and attempted, free throws made and attempted and 3-pointers made and attempted. The Mavericks haven't won a playoff series since taking the title almost seven years ago, cycling through dozens of roster moves to try to give Nowitzki another shot at a title. According to Yahoo Sports' Shams Charania, Smart and the Celtics have agreed to a four-year deal worth $52 million. Restricted free agent Marcus Smart has agreed to a four-year, $52M deal to return to the Boston Celtics, league sources tell Yahoo Sports. — Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) July 19, 2018 The 24-year-old guard averaged 10.2 points, 4.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals for the Celtics in 54 games last season. AP source: forward Channing Frye returning to Cavaliers

CLEVELAND (AP) — Channing Frye was a dependable player, locker-room presence and fan favorite for parts of three seasons with the Cavaliers. He can be again. Frye has agreed to re-sign for next season with Cleveland, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Saturday, adding that the 35-year-old will get the $2.4 million veteran’s minimum contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been signed. Yahoo Sports first reported the move. Frye won a championship in his first season with Cleveland, but the club traded him in February to the Los Angeles Lakers as part of a massive roster overhaul that helped the Cavs get back to the Finals. Frye posted a photo of himself on his Instagram account wearing a Cavs uniform with the caption: “Well I guess this is hello again.” Frye is the Cavs’ first offseason signing since superstar LeBron James left as a free agent for the Lakers. But Cleveland may make some other moves as the four-time defending Eastern Conference champions begin to rebuild without James. The 13-year veteran has averaged 9.0 points and 4.6 rebounds in a career that began with the New York Knicks in 2005......»»

iOS bug crashes messaging apps on iPhones after typing ‘Taiwan’

A recently discovered iOS bug caused iPhones to crash after the word "Taiwan" was typed in. The bug also kicked in when the Taiwanese flag emoji was used. The bug generally caused a "denial of service" issue in iPhone 5 and later models. It affected remote messaging apps like iMessage, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and other similar applications, according to a statement by security researcher Patrick Wardle, whom Apple credited for the discovery. When triggered, the bug would crash any app where the Taiwanese flag emoji or the word "Taiwan" had been typed in for iPhones where the region had not been properly set. Fortunately for iPhone users, Apple already patched the bu...Keep on reading: iOS bug crashes messaging apps on iPhones after typing ‘Taiwan’.....»»

Report: Gregg Popovich meets with Kawhi Leonard

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich met with Kawhi Leonard in San Diego on Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time) in the hopes of repairing the franchise's fractured relationship with their disgruntled star, Yahoo! Sports reported. NBA.com's David Aldridge confirmed the report. Source confirms reports that Gregg Popovich met in San Diego tonight with Kawhi Leonard. First direct communication between the two since Leonard’s trade demand Friday. — David Aldridge (@daldridgetnt) June 20, 2018 ESPN initially reported that Popovich was flying to California to meet with Leonard before Thursday's (Friday, PHL time) Draft before amending its report to indicate the meeting had taken place on Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time). Leonard played just nine games in a bizarre season in which he fell out with the Spurs. Despite being cleared to return by the Spurs -- notoriously cautious with injuries -- Leonard continued to rehab and seek outside opinions. The saga reached its apex last week as multiple outlets reported that Leonard had indicated to the Spurs that he prefers to be traded rather than continue playing for the team that traded for him during the 2011 draft and hoped to build around him in the wake of Tim Duncan's retirement in 2016. Leonard is reportedly angry with the Spurs for mishandling the injury. In particular, ESPN reported that Leonard is "irate" over public comments from Popovich and teammate Tony Parker as his absence wore on. Leonard, a two-time All-Star and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, averaged 16.2 points in those nine appearances as the Spurs failed to win 50 or more games for the first time since the abbreviated 1998-99 season. It was a disappointing follow-up to his career season in 2016-17, in which he averaged 25.5 points to establish himself as arguably the best two-way player in the NBA. Leonard is under contract for two more seasons but can exercise a player option to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. According to ESPN, Leonard will let teams interested in trading for him that he intends to play in Los Angeles, preferably for the Lakers, when he becomes a free agent......»»

Per Yahoo Sports' Shams Charania, guard Jamal Crawford has declined his player option with the Minnesota Timberwolves and will thus become a free agent this offseason. Minnesota's Jamal Crawford has declined his $4.5M player option for 2018-19 season, league sources tell Yahoo. Crawford averaged 10.3 points in 20.7 minutes for T'Wolves last season. — Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 18, 2018 Crawford played in 80 regular season games for the Timberwolves, all coming off the bench, and averaged 10.3 points (41.5 FG%, 33.1 3FG%), 1.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. In the team's five playoff games against the Houston Rockets, he normed 11.8 points (44.7 FG%, 41.2 3FG%), 2.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.0 steals. Crawford is a three-time Sixth Man of the Year, having won the award once with the Atlanta Hawks, and twice with the LA Clippers. The 38-year-old was drafted eighth overall in 2000 by the Cleveland Cavaliers, but was traded on draft night to the Chicago Bulls. Last offseason, Crawford was targeted by both the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors, but explained in an interview that "Sometimes it's more gratifying to help teams go from one point to another point," something he achieved when he helped the Timberwolves reach the postseason for the first time since the 2003-04 season. .....»»
